Snowflakes & Fire Escapes

Rate this book
Cody Moran and Gracie Callaghan wanted nothing more than to escape the life they'd been born into, but it's the kind of life that doesn't like to let go. A story of love and heartache spanning the streets of Hell's Kitchen to far, far away, where it doesn't snow.

5 I want a series Stars!

Why haven’t more of my friends one clicked this one and/or actually read it yet? This was the best .99 cents I have spent and I can only hope that the author returns to these characters or gifts Holden with his own book in the future.

J.M. Darhower delivered a short story about young Grace living in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan whose father is a mobster and the boy that has stolen her heart is the son of the big man in charge. Grace’s father is very protective over her but Cody Cormac has his ways as these two fall in love on her apartment’s fire escape.

description

”He always seemed to know when I was feeling lonely, when I could use his company. I never had to tell him. He just knew.”

Cody and Grace were wonderful together and the few well written scenes were all this author needed to give a reader for me to love Cody and Grace’s young bond and connection.

"You think I'd do this with somebody else, Gracie?"

description

Circumstances land Grace in the Witness Protection Program with Brian Holden as her handler. Being in hiding has taken a toll on Grace and she goes back to Hell’s Kitchen where the story takes a crazy turn has a few twists.

”I was a different person this past year. Why would I think Cody wouldn’t be, too?”

Overall, a great short read that will have readers joining me in asking the author for more!

"I may not have seen any stars that night, but this couldn't really be Hell, I thought… not when I looked at him and swore I could see Heaven."

I kind of want to punch myself for not reading this sooner. Like anything this woman writes, this story was freaking incredible! NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE, can cause such angst and pull so much emotion from the stories she creates.

"You can break people apart, but you can't rob them of what's them. You'll never be without me, because I'll always be part of you, just like you're in me, Gracie. You're my soul, love."

This perfect little magnificent novella carried more love, more emotion, and more feelings in it than some full length novels I have read. This right here is why JM Darhower is my favorite author! Everything she writes is brilliant and this was no exception.

My only complaint? I WANTED MOREEE!!!

Snowflakes & Fire Escapes is the perfect snowy day read ❤ | http://amzn.to/2BprTg5

"It had just always been us, in a way. Just me and Cody. My best friend. My soul mate."

What a wonderful story! I really wish it was a full length novel. “Snowflakes and Fire Escapes” is a sweet and emotional story about Gracie and Cody, two teenagers who want out of the lives that they were practically being forced to live. Cody is the only son of Cormac Moran, the leader of the largest Irish gang to ever run the streets of Manhattan and Gracie is the daughter of Cormac’s right hand man. Even if Cody’s father is a mobster, Gracie knows Cody is good and has a big heart. They knows since they were kids and Cody is the only one who’s there for Gracie no matter what, who makes her smile and feel special.

”He always seemed to know when I was feeling lonely, when I could use his company. I never had to tell him. He just knew.”

Even if their fathers don’t want them to be together they find a way to see each other on Gracie’s apartment fire escape.

description

Their lives change when Gracie is 17 and she’s forced to leave their town and to live in Witness Protection.

I loved Gracie and Cody, separately and I loved them together. They are such endearing characters and I adored their beautiful relationship. I loved Cody for being there for Gracie when she needed someone and for looking out for her. Their connection is fantastic. the plot is solid for a novella, their characterization is well done despite the short length and the twist in the end intriguing.

Overall a great short story!

Loved this quick one! It was awesome!
Cody and Grace are two teenagers living in Hells Kitchen. They both want nothing more than to get out of the life they've been given.

Cody's dad rules the streets of Hells Kitchen and Grace's dad is his right hand man. Grace's dad is very over protective of her. He doesn't let her have any electronics or any friends over. They don't even own a television. No one allowed in the house unless they have a warrant.
Grace is alone all the time. But Cody is always around. He sneaks up the fire escape to be with Grace. These two were so cute together.

He was my pulse. He was the air I breathed. He was the sun that shined on this shit show of a life I'd been given.~Grace

"Nobody else. Nobody. Nobody else gets me. Nobody else can have me. I'm yours, as long as you want me, if you want me. Fuck knows, I don't know why you would, but if you do…"~Cody

When Cody is forced to walk away from Grace it broke my heart! Then Grace is forced into witness protection away from the only life she knows. She feels like she's drowning.

The only person Grace has contact with is the US Marshal that keeps tabs on her. I loved Holden!

Will Grace stay put or does she run back to the very place she wanted out of? Will her and Cody find their way back to each other? You will have to read this quickie to find out!

I felt it was a solid read for such a short book. My only complaint is that I wish it had been longer! Hope you grab this up and enjoy! Well worth .99 on Amazon:))

Why isn't this a complete novel?!?!? I really enjoyed this short story, about a girl who grows up in Hells Kitchen with mob ties and the boy who steals her heart.

5 Amor en la Cocina del Infierno STARS

description

J. M. Darhower, Nieve, Mafia Irlandesa y La cocina del infierno. YEA PLISS!!!!!!

"...the neighborhood is the worst part of Hell... the hottest part. Hell’s Kitchen."

description

"You’re fucking beautiful. When you’re laughing, when you’re crying, and every moment in between. There’s nobody more beautiful to me.

description

description

"I may not have seen any stars that night, but this couldn’t really be Hell, I thought... not when I looked at him and swore I could see Heaven."

description

It was a great short read that I wish was a full-length novel. The plot was really good and the author did a great job by telling the story in 139 pages. Normally it is really difficult for me to feel a connection with the characters in novellas but the way the story was told made it possible. Codie and Gracie were such a beautiful couple, that made the best out of their situation. My heart broke for them, and I even cried towards the end. I wanted to know more about them and see their relationship develop. Hopefully the author will decide to write a full-length novel for these awesome characters.

POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

Note: Snowflakes & Fire Escapes was part of All I Want Anthology, now available on its own! If you’re a fan of J.M. Darhower, I highly recommend this little gem. Snowflakes & Fire Escapes is a standlone novella with completely new characters. My original review for this story can be found HERE

The blurb doesn’t tell much and I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline. Gracie, a 16years old with an overprotective father was in love with Cody, an 18 year old from the wrong side of the track. Their relationship was an open secret partly due to who their fathers were.

One day, life changed drastically for Gracie when she was taken away from everything she knew and loved, where she had to learn to moved on.

I love this little story. It was short but really engaging and well developed. It was sad how situations forced them to be a certain way, but also sweet and hopeful.

My favorite scene was “The sausage is bangin’” scene. That was a cute distraction and made me adore Cody completely.

5 STAR REVIEWS FOR : SNOWFLAKES & FIRE ESCAPES by JM DARHOWER and STRANDED by BJ HARVEY

SNOWFLAKES & FIRE ESCAPES by J M DARHOWER - Reviewed by Gitte & Jenny

J.M Darhower really has the knack for grabbing us the moment we open our kindles to start one of her new stories. This time was no exception. Snowflakes & Fire Escapes had us riveted and we read it in one sitting wanting more long after reading the last page. It was spell binding; intriguing and chock a block of emotion and suspense. The characters had such depth in this flawlessly written story that really packed a punch in such a short space of time. Did we mention we wanted more? *Cough* J.M we want MORE!!!!

‘I don’t put up a fight. It doesn’t matter where I’m going. Not as long as where I’m going, I have him.’

Gracie and Cody had a hard life through no fault of their own; rather their place in it was determined by who they were born to and the roles they had to play to survive. It was heart breaking, so sad – yet so sweet at the same time. Hell’s Kitchen was indeed just that for these two and the obstacles placed in the way kept reminding them of just what they couldn’t have or be.

“Couldn’t keep my eyes off you back then, guess I loved you even when I was ten.”

The drama was quite action packed and as their story unfolded a new character came into it who we NEED to know more about, yeah we’re talking about Holder! So yeah, we loved this story and we need and want more Cody and Gracie as well as the enigma that is Holden. Pretty please!

‘This couldn’t really be Hell…not when I looked at him and swore I could see Heaven.’

Just as every snowflake is unique and magical; so is J.M Darhower. She mesmerises us every single time. A must read!

From a new-to-me-author, this amazing short story was a steal for 99-cents. Nowhere have I gained so much for so little and enjoyed an afternoon of reading so much. I’ll never see another snowflake without being drawn back to Cody and Gracie’s story.

Growing up in a place called Hell’s Kitchen with parents who were mobsters didn’t make it easy on their offspring. And theirs certainly wasn’t a love story made in heaven. But these two built a sweet love and deep devotion for one another from childhood that grew as they did. Life didn’t always go smoothly and they were tortured and tested at times for this relationship. When all else fails, wish upon a star – it might just come true one day.

The only negative remark you’ll find here is that the story was just over too quickly. I am begging loudly for more-more-more of Cody and Gracie – and definitely more of Brian Holden, a true hero!

Give yourself a special treat today and get yourself a copy of this little gem. You’ll be glad you did!

I'm a big fan of J.M. Darhower and have had this book on my list for many years. Unfortunately it's one of those times that I truly didn't enjoy a book that so many of my GR friends did. First it was very short and while I knew this it felt messy and childish. While I thought Cody and Gracie were cute together and I loved that they were both virgins overall I was really bored. Also, I don't mind books that go back and forth from past to present but at times in this one it was confusing.

What a perfect little story!! I wish it was longer because I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters but it was wonderful while it lasted.

It may be short but we get a full story with this one. Sure, I wish we could get more details but that's mainly because I'm the type of reader who needs to know EVERYTHING about a story and it's characters, right down to the color underwear they're wearing :p.

It would appear that J.M. Darhower is incapable of writing a book that I won't fall in love with. She's quickly becoming one of my top favorite authors.

A gritty story about a boy and a girl, who have grown up in Hell’s Kitchen. Cody Callaghan’s father, Cormac, runs the town, whilst, unbeknown to Grace, her father works for him.

Grace’s mother died 10 years ago, and she finds herself alone and contemplative most of the time. Her father is obsessed with keeping her safe, be it at the private convent she attends, or the constant reminder to lock doors and windows.

In true JM Darhower style, no punches are pulled as the story unfolds through leaping to past and present. Once meeting in the middle, the true extent of this Christmas timed story is revealed. Perfect <3

Interesting mafia-YA novella with a plot and a sweet romance. I'd have liked it more except the h was so wilfully, wantonly....clueless it frustrated me to be in her head!! I'd much rather have been in the H's POV, since he seems to be the main mover of events, it'd have been more interesting for sure.

Maybe I was overly emotional from having just finished rereading "Torture in Her Soul", but I jumped into this one and the next thing I know I'm bawling my eyes out.

So we have Grace Callaghan, a young girl with an overprotective father. Her dad, Connor Callaghan, is connected to the Irish underground - not a guy you want to cross. Grace is best friends since birth with Cody Moran. Cody's dad is the boss of the Irish, also not a nice man. The setting is Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan. Grace and Cody have had a special, but guarded friendship and as they hit their upper teens, their friendship blossoms into more.

I felt gut punched when I got toward the end of the book - in a good way - obviously from my 5 star rating. Darhower blew me away, once again, with a complex story and a cast of complex characters. I fell in love with Grace and Cody. Highly recommended!

TW/CW:
mafia, violence, drug use (weed).

This was short and cute. The problem that I had with reading this was that it was confusing. It jumps between a current timeline and flashbacks, but there was no way for me to know which was which, the flashbacks weren't dated or italicized. There's also one descriptive sex scene between the teenage MCs, which would've worked better if they had been adults, but they were both virgin teens. It wasn't done distastefully like a K. Webster book though, still readable but yet obvious that it was intended for the adult female gaze. This was still very good despite.

I absolutely loved this book! I loved everything about it, the story, the characters, the writing, everything! I found myself in tears several times. It was a short read (100 or so pages) but it didn't feel like it. Novellas can be hard because there's usually not enough time to make a connection but this author pulled it off. I wanted more! I WANT more! I hope there's more.....

LOVED IT!
