My first children's novel, THE 13 TREASURES, won the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize. THE OTHER ALICE won the Calderdale Book of the Year Award. A PINCH OF MAGIC won a Dutch Bronze Pen Award. My books have been translated and sold in 25 territories worldwide.
Before becoming a full-time writer I worked in publishing as an editor, and before that, as a bookseller. Prior to that, I worked in bars, a bakery, and a second-hand record shop to make ends meet while trying to get my first book deal. I live in Essex and have a son, Jack, and two cats, Widdershins and Lucky.
My latest children's novel is A CLOCK STRIKES MURDER, a sequel to TWICE UPON A TIME. My debut novel for adults is TWO LITTLE LIARS, a thriller partially set in the 1990s. It publishes in June 2026.
I love hearing from readers. You are welcome to send me a message on here or via my website.
I am a huge fan of Michelle Harrison’s middle grade fiction. Her tales of the Widdershin sisters had me up all night and just the right amount of frightened! When she very kindly offered me a review copy of her first book for adults, a thriller, I had a whole mix of feelings. Michelle is the kind of writer I would follow most places, but her middle grade series had my nerves jangling so what would her adult fiction be like?!
This taut thriller centres on Bee and Erin As children their lies had terrible and tragic consequences which earned them the title, ‘two little liars’ as they became infamous for their lies. 6 years later they unexpectedly meet on a college trip to Blackwater Island and another tragedy befalls them. Erin subsequently becomes a successful children’s illustrator, though she remains haunted by her past. A series of accusatory emails, newspaper headlines raking up the past, and an invitation to return to Blackwater Island reunite Erin with the past she has struggled to hide.
It is a bold step to jump from children’s to adult’s writing and Michelle does this with aplomb. After reading the first page I knew I was in for an incredible ride. The writing is excellent, smooth and evocative, and I was sucked straight into Erin’s life, looking over her shoulder, hearing footsteps, haunted. This is darkly delicious, edgy, compulsive. Michelle captures the unpredictability and toxicity of youth so brilliantly. I wasn’t sure how far this would push me out of my comfort zone and it definitely pushed me to the edges! Death is never pretty and it really isn’t in the author’s hands. Expertly plotted, Michelle uses the ‘locked room’ thriller to powerful effect, adding in the suggestion of witchcraft and piling up the list of suspects so that you have no idea what is coming next and from what direction! What an incredible thriller debut! I hope that there are more on their way!
Two Little Liars is a psychological thriller that slips between past and present with the ease of a whispered rumour, pulling you into a story built on guilt, girlhood, and the kind of secrets that never stay buried as neatly as people hope.
Erin and Bee were once inseparable, bound by a friendship that felt feral and bright — until the tragedy that turned them into tabloid villains. The novel opens in the long shadow of that night, with Bee murdered on a college trip and Erin left to carry the weight of a story no one ever let her forget. Twenty years later, the past stirs again, and the survivors of that trip are drawn back together, not out of nostalgia but fear. Someone knows exactly who Erin is. Someone remembers what she did. And someone is ready to kill for it.
What I loved is how the book blends psychological suspense with a subtle thread of witchcraft — not in a flashy, supernatural way, but as an undercurrent of power, intuition, and the dangerous alchemy of teenage girls who believe they’re untouchable. It gives the story a slightly uncanny shimmer, the sense that something old and sharp is watching from the edges.
The pacing is tight, the atmosphere deliciously uneasy, and the author captures that particular cruelty of adolescence — how quickly admiration can turn to obsession, how easily loyalty can warp into something darker. The adult timeline adds a melancholy weight, showing how the past refuses to loosen its grip, no matter how many years have passed.
By the final chapters, the tension coils beautifully, and the truth — messy, human, and devastating — lands with real force. A twisty, compulsive read about the stories we tell to survive, the ones we bury to forget, and the ones that come back demanding to be heard. Perfect for readers who love their thrillers with a hint of the uncanny and a deep, lingering sense of dread.
With thanks to Michelle Harrison, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
Michelle Harrison’s adult fiction debut is a gripping, suspenseful read that hooks you from the very first page. The premise is deeply compelling: in 1990, two ten-year-old girls tell a terrible lie that results in a horrific tragedy, earning them the infamous moniker the "two little liars". This act casts a long shadow over their lives, leading to further mystery during a college trip to the remote Blackwater Island six years later. Now, two decades later, the survivors are forced to finally face the dark secrets of their past. Michelle Harrison masterfully weaves together three timelines to slowly unravel the truth. Blackwater Island acts as a claustrophobic, sinister character in its own right, cut off from the mainland twice a day by a treacherous tidal causeway. Its creepy history of 17th-century witch trials adds a fantastic layer of eerie folklore to the mystery. This is a brilliantly tense psychological thriller filled with complex characters, toxic teenage dynamics, and a past that refuses to stay buried. It's an absolute must-read!
I haven’t read many thrillers in the few years I’ve been reading and at the start of this year, I decided I wanted to branch out and try some different genres. Michelle Harrison has made this one of the best decisions I’ve made this year.
This book tackled some serious topics while also leaving you second guessing at every single turn. The book followed Erin In childhood, young adult years and her adult years. Flashing back and forth following along with her life.
Bee and Erin had different lifestyles, their paths kept crossing until the unthinkable happened. Who did it? Who was to blame? Did their past catch up with them? Was hiding the option?
I have been hooked on this book since the minute I read it and I am so thrilled I was able to get an advanced read on this because honestly, you all need to give it a try.
Wow… I genuinely think I read this whole book holding my breath 👀📚
What an absolutely gripping story from start to finish. The suspense had me completely hooked and I honestly struggled to put it down once I started.
I loved how all the characters slowly connected together throughout the story and the way the timeline moved between past and present made everything even more addictive. Every chapter ended in a way that made me need to keep reading and before I knew it, I’d finished the whole thing in one sitting.
Fast paced, tense and packed with suspense, this is one thriller I’d absolutely recommend adding to your TBR when it releases very soon ✨
This was my first book by Michelle Harrison but it definitely won’t be my last 🖤
I was very grateful to NetGalley to read an advanced copy of Michelle Harrison’s debut adult thriller. It centres on Erin who is living in the aftermath of a terrible childhood mistake that led to a ripple of tragic consequences, ruining several lives. The other person involved crosses her path on a college trip and is murdered. There are twists and turns, everyone has motive, most seem to have opportunity. I did correctly predict the who but not the why, so was still guessing up to the reveal. It’s brilliantly written and well paced, with a thread of heartbreak and lots of triggering themes. “Even liars don’t lie about everything” has to be one of the saddest lines.
Two Little Liars completely pulled me in from the very beginning — no slow start, just instant suspense and tension. I loved the past and present timelines and how every chapter revealed another piece of the mystery. Erin was such an interesting character because I never fully knew what to think of her, which made the story even more addictive. The twists genuinely surprised me and the atmosphere throughout was so tense and emotional. Michelle Harrison has written such a clever, gripping thriller that was impossible to put down. After this, I really hope she writes more thrillers.
Erin and Bee are the TWO LITTLE LIARS. Vilified. Despised. Never forgiven, forgotten, or meant to see each other again after the tragedy they caused. Until a fateful college trip brings them together, and Bee is murdered. Twenty years on, the case remains unsolved and a threat reunites the survivors of the trip. Someone knows who Erin is and what she did the night Bee died. Someone who’ll kill again. It was an ok read.
Intriguing story about how a childhood mistake can affect the rest of your life and how choices made can have lasting effects. Two 10 year olds tell a terrible lie which results in many broken lives, death and lasting trauma. Then twenty years later some of those affected must face up to the reality of what happened then and try to piece together truths. An intriguing exploration of guilt, anger, desire for revenge with flawed characters, newfound truths, and twists that keep coming!
Really enjoyed this book. Took me a while to get used to the dual timelines and enjoyed how it was split into 3 parts. The ending i did not see coming which is always good. Highly recommend. Thank you to Netgalley for an advance copy.
