The Pontifical Biblical Commission (Latin: Pontificia Commissio Biblica) is an organism established within the Roman Curia to ensure the proper interpretation and defense of Sacred Scripture.
It's interesting to see how the commission positions Roman Catholic exegesis as (ideally) taking the best of critical methodology while spitting out the bones and while also reading in line with the history of the Christian tradition and the reading practices of the Fathers. They acknowledge the fundamental tension with this, but I'm not sure they clearly chart a path forward for how to do this nor how certain nonnegotiable aspects of the tradition such as reading the OT Christologically are fundamentally opposed to the modern historical critical project. Their comments regarding "fundamentalist exegesis" were rather strange. It's not clear to me who they actually have in mind. There is no self-proclaimed school of fundamentalist exegesis the way there is for redaction criticism or feminist exegesis, for example.
The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church is essential reading for those wishing to know the Magisterium’s views on the interpretation of the Bible. However, be prepared to spend some time with the document as it contains jargon and abstract language.
A medium sized document from the Pontifical bible commission summarizing the Catholic Church's stance on the various methods of Bible interpretation.
The discussion of historical critical, canonical, narrative, structural, etc. interpretive methods I found the most helpful. The warning about the philosophical assumptions governing one's interpretive framework was also important.
Also understanding how the RCC understands the process of "actualisation" both on an authoritative level (by the NT authors with regard to the OT, or Church councils concerning some NT scriptures) which parses the meaning of a verse in a new context.
Great short easy read about methods and approaches for interpretation of the Bible! It was one of my texts required for my Fundamental Doctrine course at Creighton University.
