Kazune Kawahara (河原和音) made her manga debut at age 18 with Kare no Ichiban Sukina Hito (His Most Favorite Person). Also, while thinking of her manga, she often spaces out and brings grocery baskets home. Adores her nieces.
Takeo Goda's best friend, the possibly aro ace Makoto Sunakawa, has a stalker/secret admirer. So of course Goda -- lacking any nuance or insight into anyone -- is going to try to hook them up. Sunakawa sensitively displays the patience of a saint as he navigates this newest minefield Goda has created.
Even when he has gone astray, Goda is amusing and lovable, especially when he reveals his big genuine heart with statements like this about wanting permission to share a secret: "I'm not good at making excuses or hiding stuff . . . and I don't want to do that anyway."
Volume 7 takes a breather from the Takeo and Yamata love fest to explore why it is, every year, Sunakawa receives chocolates from a mysterious Yukika Amami. Takeo and Yamata each support the clinically shy Yukika's approaching Suna. They all go to the zoo together. We learn the distinction between liking someone and "not disliking" someone, which has implications for Yukika. Suna is so so nice to Yukika in the process; a kind of teaching model for how to say no to someone with respect and appreciation.
But there's something about Yukika, sending notes and chocolates to Suna for TEN YEARS (?!) that makes her not at all sympathetic, certainly strange, and a little bit creepy?
This volume switches to a different gear, this time dealing with an unrequited love. This series has a positive spin on rejection, it allows the person closure. Rejection is harsh, but sometimes, it is the only way to grow.
I like it that this series doesn't even try to repetitive. Every volume is always a delight.
As someone who reads Sunakawa as asexual and relates to him a lot, this volume was heartbreaking for me. To everyone I have ever disappointed: I am sorry.
I started to read other reviews of this, as I normally do, but I stopped. I don't want to hear anyone talking about how upset they are that Sunakawa doesn't have a girlfriend yet. I don't want to read anything about how he needs one, deserves one, etc. Look. He's happy. He's fine how he is. He has people he loves; isn't that good enough? Sigh.
i seriously thought suna would get his own love story. i guess not? but it was very sweet of takeo and yamato for giving that enthusiastic support! and takeo's danger radar is hilarious!
This was fun, getting to see more of Sunakawa's long-time admirer and how sweet and encouraging Takeo is to her about it! I also love how we continue to see more of Sunakawa's and Takeo's friendship--the final scene of this volume is perfect. "Suna, do you love me?" "Why do you ask?" "Yukika menitoned it." "Hmmm. Is there anyone who doesn't love you once they get to know you?" Nope, no there isn't.
Sadly I really didn't care for this volume, I thought Yukika was pretty creepy unfortunately. I did enjoy how different this volume was though, it didn't seem like the same story over again like some of the other volumes.
Still so curious about Suna. It's almost like he has feelings for Takeo but it's not clear either way. I know they love each other as best friends just wonder if it is more on his end.
This volume followed the romantic adventures of Takeo's best friend, Suna, and took on a more bittersweet quality. It was a little sadder than previous volumes, because Suna's personality is quieter and less boisterous than Takeo's. But it was great to watch Yamato and Takeo be such great friends.
I'm a little concerned that this story is outliving its concept, but the focus on Suna this volume definitely helps. I love the way it keeps playing with shoujo tropes - Yukika would be a male in most other shoujo romances, so this reversal is helping to keep things relatively fresh.
i just like sunakawa so much, you guys. so MUCH. he is my asexual prince and a truly beautiful friend and a kind person. i found his storyline with yukika this volume really sweet, actually? just a lovely gentle handling of the unrequited love plot. 3.5 stars
Nothing special, but enjoyable, and I do wonder what is up with Sunakawa -- there is an obvious answer but it seems unlikely that the mangaka would go there.
Meh. This is definitely my least favorite volume so far. On one hand, I empathize with Amami. However, it's not an excuse to stalk someone. Putting Suna on a pedestal has clearly done a number on her. Her interactions with him are just incredibly frustrating to watch.
This volume is by far my favorite in the series! I loved getting more character development and an introduction to a new character! I really enjoyed the plot in this one and the story is progressing more.
I think this is the first manga/comic/story ever where a male character explicitly tells a friend that he loves him and I really appreciate this! I’m so happy I picked up this series, I’m loving it!
This is a great, light-hearted series about love and friendship. It can be pretty intentionally goofy at times, but that really just makes it all the more charming. But what I think really wins me over in regards to this series is the way that it avoids some of the worst shoujo cliches. Sunakawa (the main character's best friend) is very much a "pretty boy", but instead of being cold and aloof as we're somewhat led to believe a little at the beginning, he's actually extremely kind, and not a heartless, stuck-up jerk at all. Yamato (the main female lead) doesn't fall for the "pretty boy"--she falls for Takeo (the main character) unhesitantly, and initially because of his personality and all-around goodness, not his looks (though we find out later that she does find him very attractive). There isn't even a hint of a real love triangle between the two best friends and the girl (once Takeo gets over his reflexive and very mistaken assumption that Yamato likes Suna, anyway), which is also refreshing.
But this volume did something that I really, really appreciated. In this volume we meet Yukika, a girl who has a long-running crush on Suna...and instead of forcing things and making him instantly fall for her just to pair him off, Suna ends up turning her down. This is AFTER Takeo and Yamato spend most of the volume doing all they can to encourage her to do her best and spend some time with Suna--and Suna handles it all very well, with grace and compassion. He gives Yukika more than a fair chance to win him over, overlooks her petrifying shyness (and honestly pretty stalkerish behaviour), and agrees to spend time with her and get to know her before giving his answer to her confession. However, in the end, while he's touched by her feelings for him, he knows that he doesn't like her the same way she likes him, and rather than hurt her by pretending he does, he tells her that he's sorry, but he can't go out with her. Yukika is understandably saddened by this, but she's still not sorry that she loves him, or that she finally confessed to him, because now at least they can be friends; although their relationship is not the romantic one she wanted, they do have a real relationship now, and she can actually talk to him instead of running away or freezing up. There's an important lesson there, too: sometimes the person you love will not love you back, but that doesn't make them a terrible person, or you in any way worthless or inadequate.
So many shoujo manga have basically EVERYONE ending up with the person they have a crush on, or else a new possible love interest arrives out of nowhere to pair up with any 'loose ends' (i.e. rejected suitors), which feels fake and forced. It was nice to see a more bittersweet, not-completely-happy ending for once, and to see it handled so well: with gentleness and delicacy amidst the typical slapstick humour of this series.

"Talking about ordinary, silly things…being listened to…being smiled at…that's definitely…when I feel happiest too."
This was such a touching and moving volume!
It was another volume that was a "breeze" to read in that I found myself unable to put it down and read it quickly. Unlike the previous volume though, this one centers very much around Sunakawa due to Takeo finding out who has been crushing on Sunakawa all this time! EEEEPPP!
I won't go into too much about all that, but it further confirms that Sunakawa is SO kind, and absolutely love his character to pieces! I'm pretty sure he's my favorite, but I know he could only be my favorite because of Takeo and their friendship. Truly, they are the best "best friends" I have seen in manga, and love it so much!
I liked the new girl and thought she was really sweet! You can see that Takeo has really matured from who he was in the beginning as he talks with her and thinks about things before he speaks. It was cool! I also LOVED how Yamato is able to befriend her! I mean, Takeo easily does too, but it was nice seeing Yamato be able to help her and talk to her in a way that a guy can't.
There were quite a few humorous parts and loved the ending quite a bit!

Ils me font rire à chaque chapitre.
In a short amount of time, I got to witness character development with not only Takeo, but Suna as well. I'm quite surprised by how the writers went about this mini-arc of the story. I'm left with bittersweet feelings, but at the same time, I feel as though this was written perfectly. For a rom-com, I got a dash of realism when it comes to romantic feelings with others. Definitely something great for all readers who know this by heart, or have yet to come across this (I know I'm being too inconspicuous, but I'm trying not to spoil anything!). While I'm starting to remember more from the anime, I'm anticipating the next manga for more fun with Takeo and his friends!
THIS SERIES IS SO ADORABLE, I CAN'T TAKE IT. BUT I MUST. :D This volume continues everything I love about the series - its cute, wholesome take on high school romance, with an unconventional romantic lead - this time shifting the some much-deserved focus to Takeo's friend Sunakawa (or rather, a girl who has a desperate crush on him, and Takeo's efforts to help her out). Yet another sweet extension of the story. :)
