Courting the Unconventional #8

A Troublesome Circumstance

Rate this book
Danger brought them together; his secret could be their undoing.

When Lady Josephine Tweedale escapes an abduction and flees into the woods, she finds refuge in a small gamekeeper’s cottage, completely unaware that the man tending the fire is actually Jude Dexter, Earl of Pendryn. Desiring to simply keep her safe for the night, Jude allows her mistake to stand. If she knew the truth, Society would force them into a marriage that neither of them wanted.

But the shared danger and the quiet hours spent together in the cottage pull them closer than either expects. Josephine begins to trust the gentle, steadfast man she believes him to be, and Jude discovers a purpose far stronger than escaping his protecting her.

When the truth finally emerges, Josephine’s humiliation cuts deep. Yet Jude refuses to lose her. He is willing to risk duty, reputation, and scandal itself—not for obligation, but for the chance to offer her his heart.

As the eighth novel in the Courting the Unconventional series by author Laura Beers, A Troublesome Circumstance continues the series. I really enjoyed this story! Lady Josephine was abducted but escapes to a cottage where she meets Jude. Jude is an Earl but he decides to not reveal who he truly is and pretends to be a groundskeeper. Jude saves Josephine from freezing, after he discovers her in the barn. I love when there is a rescue. Jude and Josephine are so cute together. But his hidden identity causes problems especially when the truth is revealed. I loved the way this was handled. There is danger involved in the story as well as Josephine’s abductor keeps coming back. This is a clean regency romance. I loved it and I recommend!

Laura Beers never disappoints!! 😍 This was such an amazing addition to the series and I absolutely devoured it! It was captivating from the very beginning and genuinely so hard to put down.

The chemistry between the MCs was positively sizzling 🤭😍 I loved watching their relationship develop, especially with the hidden identity and forced proximity thrown into the mix!

And can we talk about that SIDE ROMANCE?! 🥹😭 I was not prepared for how much I was going to adore that little storyline. It was so incredibly sweet and honestly one of my favorite parts of the book!

Between the romance, suspense, scandal, and protective MMC, this one had me completely hooked. Another Laura Beers win for me! 💖

I’m loving this Courting the Unconventional series! These couples keep bucking some of the societal rules of the time, and I am absolutely here for it.

A young lady escapes an abduction by jumping out of a moving carriage, is found by an Earl who’s hiding his identity, and ends up in a small cottage with him—tell me more because I’m sat! (Isn’t that what the young people say? 😂)

Josephine was one courageous young woman. From jumping out of a moving carriage to running into the woods while injured and standing her ground against the odious man determined to make her his, she certainly wasn’t a damsel waiting around to be rescued. She did start driving me a little crazy, though, with her reasoning for turning down Jude’s proposal. I kept shouting at her in my head, “Ask him how he feels about you!” Meanwhile, Jude needed to be a little more plainspoken and stop assuming she understood his feelings simply from his actions. Thank goodness for Lord Rupert, who had enough sense to set Jude on the right path!

I really liked that both Josephine and Jude only wanted to marry for love. No marriages of convenience for these two! I also enjoyed seeing Josephine’s brother turn out not to be quite the lout I initially thought he was. That said, I still wanted to smack him upside the head over some of his outdated ideas concerning the sister he was supposed to care about.

Of course, I loved the mystery thread running through the story. I thought I had figured out who was behind everything, but Laura Beers threw quite the twist in there—and I was wrong. Which, admittedly, happens quite often.

And how could I forget the bonus romance? That was such a fun addition and the perfect little extra!
A Troublesome Circumstance was another enjoyable addition to a series I’m having a lot of fun reading. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what unconventional couple comes next!

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Every time I write a review for latest release in Laura Beers’ Courting the Unconventional series, I think Beers can’t possible top all the previous books. And every time, I am wrong. Every time! A Troublesome Circumstance is brilliant. It has all the banter, chemistry, intrigue, danger, romance, and heart Beers is known for. I adored everything about it.

The story focuses Lady Josephine Tweedale as she escapes from an abduction and finds herself lost in the woods. When she comes across a gamekeeper’s cottage, the man living there offers her food, shelter, and a way back to her family. He is so kind and so handsome that Josephine isn’t in any hurry to be saved. When she reunites with her family and returns to London, she discovers that the man she believed to be a humble gamekeeper was actually Jude Dexter, the Earl of Pendryn. Josephine is embarrassed by Jude’s charade and wants nothing to do with him. Unfortunately, Jude can’t stop thinking of Josephine and won’t give up on protecting her. The story that follows is full of banter, wit, forgiveness, humor, deception, hope, and romance.

Things to love:
-Regency England setting
-meet cute
-hidden identify
-forced proximity
-mystery and intrigue
-she falls first, he falls harder
-fabulous side characters
-the ending!!!

Josephine was fabulous. Josephine was strong and independent but also ladylike and a perfect Regency FMC. Beers always does a beautiful job of balancing the demands of the time period with the demands of her modern readers’ sensibilities and Josephine is a perfect example of this. I loved Josephine’s inner dialogue, especially her thoughts about Jude. I was rooting for her from the start.

Jude was a perfect gentleman. He was so focused on keeping Josephine safe and protecting his own heart that he had no idea he was falling for her. I loved all the interactions between Jude and his brother and father. So much good banter and brilliant insights were found in those conversations.

I adored everything about this book. It was the perfect addition to this fabulous series. This book can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the whole series. It is phenomenal.

“When will you learn that we can weather any storm, so long as we face it together?”

Oh how I loved this story!! This book contained several of my favorite tropes, and the way the mystery and suspense unfolded was great!

I loved that both of our main characters refused to settle for anything less than true love in marriage. Even when a marriage of convenience would have been the easy path, they made choices that stayed true to who they are. From the meet-cute to the suspense, yearning, and slow-burn romance, this story completely captivated me, and I was dying to find out what was really going on. There were so many layers I didn't see coming, and the final reveal was built up brilliantly.

I have always loved the hidden identity trope in historical romance, and the execution here is adorable. It highlights Jude’s protective nature and sets the stage for the rest of the book.

While this can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the previous books in order to fully appreciate the world these characters live in. I especially enjoyed the setup for the next book which comes out November 3, 2026!

“And I am sorry for threatening you with a pitchfork.”
“In all fairness, I was pointing a rifle at you.”

Content: closed door romance, kisses only, no explicit or graphic content, mild peril-abduction, gambling, mild suspense

Lady Josephine Tweedale and Jude Dexter, Earl of Pendryn, meet in a most unusual way. Certain assumptions are made, and instead of Jude correcting Josephine, things get extremely complicated. I typically don’t like secret identity tropes, but this played well as part of the story. I loved the developing friendship that became more and Jude’s protective nature towards Josie.

There is a bit of a mystery in the story, and I really didn’t figure out who was behind the subterfuge until right before it was revealed. I am always happy when an author keeps me guessing throughout the story.

Tropes and Tidbits:
exciting beginning
forced proximity
several romances

Lord Rupert was a great sounding board for Jude, and I cannot wait to read his story, which is next in the series. He has been one of my favorite characters throughout the books. This is a standalone book in the Courting the Unconventional series, but you'd enjoy seeing the characters from the past as well. I highly recommend this for readers who love clean Regency romance.

This is the 8th book in the Courting the Unconventional series. While the books can be read as standalones, you'll get the best experience reading them in order as characters and events crossover.

Laura Beers does an amazing job of creating a series that interconnects but each story is its own and it keeps your interest from book to book.

In this book we get Jude and Josephine's story. Escaping from being abducted, Josephine stumbles upon a cottage and takes refuge in the stable. Weary from the demands that come with his title and the expectations of the Ton, Jude has sequestered himself away in the cottage on his land. When he finds Josephine in the stable, she mistakes him for the gamekeeper and he does not correct her. While at first they are both weary of each other, Jude finds himself feeling protective of her and Josephine quickly starts to feel safe.

In this story we truly get two characters who want to find love and who want to be loved for who they are - not for titles, prestige, or money. We also get a slow burn romance with the perfect amount of swoon.

And there's twists. There was a part where I wondered if a character was involved, but I dismissed it and thought, no - they haven't done anything to warrant my suspicion. And then of course I was shocked when I learned that they were involved!

This is a book and series that you do not want to miss! And I am really excited for the next book as it will feature Lord Rupert!

I received an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Quotes:
"Every soul bears burdens, no matter their station."

“Because the truth of the matter is that… I love you, Josie. Desperately. Madly.” Her breath caught. “You… do?” A soft chuckle escaped him. “I do not know why you sound so surprised. I love you with everything I am and everything I will be.”

This hidden identity story has a little family, danger, and forced proximity with lots of witty banter and a slow-burn romance. I absolutely loved the meet-cute! And oh the plot twists! I had a tiny suspicion but it was so much more than I expected. Fantastic story from start to finish!

Josephine is kind, courageous, and witty. I loved her bravery in the face of danger. I loved her quick trust of Jude and the amazing friendship they shared. I loved that she didn’t see Jude’s title she saw the man he truly was. I enjoyed her relationship with her mother and even her bickering with her brother. Jude is steady, honorable, and compassionate. I loved his instant desire to protect Josephine. I loved all the ways he tried to win back her trust and convince her how much he cared. He has some heavy feelings of being trapped by the weight of duty and expectations. Josephine and Jude have amazing chemistry and the tension is intense. One of my favorite scenes was the shooting lesson. I loved that Jude fought for Josephine and that she was able to forgive and move forward. Their path to happily ever after had some highs, lows, and twists but it was beautiful in the end.
And how fun that we got to see more Luca and Charlotte, and Rupert. I am so excited for more Rupert!

A few more quotes:
“I understand more than you might think. I wish for the same—a marriage like my parents’, built on love rather than convenience.” Her lips curved faintly. “Then we are in the minority.” “Perhaps,” he said, meeting her gaze. “But that doesn’t make us wrong.”

“You’ll find your path. Just… make sure it’s truly yours.” Jude stared into the fire, the flickering light reflecting in his glass. “My path was decided the day I was born.” “Then change it. Rewrite it. Make it something worth walking.”

“Josie… if you keep looking at me like that, I will never leave the gardens.” Her lips curved. “Then perhaps I shall continue looking at you exactly like that.” He groaned softly, a sound that sent a delightful shiver down her spine. “You are going to be the ruin of me.”

Note: This is book eight in the series. It can be read as a standalone but there will be slight spoilers for book seven, previous MCs make appearances.

"You are my hero, but it is time for me to save myself."

This series! If there is such a genre as Regency romantic thrillers, then I think Laura Beers may have cornered the market. Each story has been wrapped up in intrigue, leaving me clamoring for the ending and whatever comes next in this lengthy series. Each one can be read as a standalone, but the little details and characters that appear throughout the series are worth starting from the beginning. To enjoy this one to the fullest, I highly recommend reading Unmasking the Diamond first.

A Troublesome Circumstance starts with a kidnapping, an accident and a case of mistaken identity. It's this delicious tension that follows the characters throughout the story- a secret earl and the lady he doesn't want to admit made a big impression on him and that he just might love who is desperately trying to avoid a marriage she doesn't want. Jude and Josephine both alternate playing the hero, often to their own detriment and unhappiness. I wanted to strangle the two of them through the page at times, they both are so stubborn!

This might be some of the most work a couple has ever had to do to get to a happily ever after. Their family did not make it easy, society did not make it easy and the two of them did not make it easy. I love a hero who will fight for his lady, even if he needs a little convincing to overcome his own hurt and insecurities. I also love how Laura gives us these fierce female leads who know their own minds and stand out as unique among people who want everyone to fit in.

Julia Eve did a wonderful job narrating the audiobook, bringing out Jude's stateliness, Josephine's determination, Luca's confidence and Lord Reddon's cattiness. There are a lot of characters that add to the angst of the story that are voiced in a way that kept me captured throughout. It's a long audiobook, clocking in just over 10 hours, but I had my ear buds in, catching snippets for a few minutes at a time between longer stretches because I was so captivated! Brava!

I highly recommend this wonderful story in any form!

A Troublesome Circumstance by Laura Beers crackles with the lively charm typical of a delightful Regency romance. The dramatic opening chapter, where Josephine’s life hung in the balance, immediately captivated me. I knew this would be one I found hard to put down. The story ignites with the entrance of Jude, the reclusive earl who has retreated from the world to a small cabin in the woods.

Some of my favorite tropes, like hidden identity, a damsel in distress, close proximity, and familial betrayal, are skillfully woven into the narrative. The characters are likable, if not a bit frustrating. Josephine is headstrong and impulsive. Jude is the overburdened, brooding type. It takes them a while and quite a lot of maneuvering to figure out how good they are for one another. Attraction has to fight its way to love, and even then they are still reluctant. I commiserated with the side characters who grew annoyed with the two of them dancing around the issue. (Shout out to Rupert – my favorite side character. Then there was Jude and Josephine’s parents to consider as they almost stole the show.)

The drama pulses consistently under the romance, a constant threat from the villain creating suspense. One of my favorite scenes was the masquerade ball—no spoilers—but that chapter had me gasping and laughing. The book’s narrative flowed seamlessly, drawing me in with a surprising plot twist that escalated the tension in the final quarter to the point that I had to finish the story, sacrificing sleep. The book concluded in a most fulfilling way, making the entire reading experience worthwhile. Regency romance fans won’t be disappointed.

A TROUBLESOME CIRCUMSTANCE starts with an escape, an accident, and a handsome hero. It‘s a charming regency romance filled with twists and turns, mistaken identities, and a touch of suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s a great addition to the Courting the Unconventional series!

Josie and Jude are just two people wanting to be seen as the people they are and not just their place in society. Their meet-cute had me laughing. Their banter was delightful from the beginning. I loved how strong-willed, witty, and resilient Josie is and Jude is so protective, honorable, and compassionate. They captivated my heart from the start. It was nice that Josie stuck to her guns about marrying for love and didn’t want a marriage of convenience just because it would be the easy thing to do. I enjoyed the teasing and tender moments sprinkled throughout. I detested the villain of the story and the culprit behind it all was a surprise! Although Josie and Jude’s road to happiness was a little bumpy, I enjoyed every minute of it!

Tropes: regency romance | hidden identity | forced proximity | friends to lovers | secrets | danger & suspense

My favorite things:
The pitchfork & rabbit stew
The chemistry between Josie and Jude
Jude makes her feel safe
The shooting lesson
The Masquerade Ball
Jude fights for her
Seeing Lucas & Charlotte again
Jude’s friend, Lord Rupert
The side romance
The hunting cottage

Favorite quotes:
“And I am sorry for threatening you with a pitchfork.”
“In all fairness, I was pointing a rifle at you.”

“But I cannot imagine not seeing her every day. Her smile buoys me up when everything else feels as if it’s all falling apart.”

Happy reading!

“Something in her had steadied him, made him feel as though his restless soul had finally found a safe harbor.”

I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or otherwise.

Forced proximity, a touch of danger, heroic rescues, a hidden identity, and swoony romance – A Troublesome Circumstance is such a sweet and captivating story! Laura’s books are always well-written and enjoyable to read. And these characters – I liked them SO much! Jude is quiet and feels burdened by responsibility, but he’s honorable, protective, and kind. Josie is sweet and bookish but also strong and resilient. They are so good for each other. I liked seeing Charlotte and Lucas from the previous book and enjoyed Rupert’s involvement since his story is next. This story has some light suspense, and I didn’t see the little twist until I was right there. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and read it in a few days!

This book is part of the Courting the Unconventional series, and I think it is best enjoyed after reading the previous ones. Although, I don’t think you’d be totally lost reading this one as a stand-alone. I’ve enjoyed this series, and I’m excited to read Rupert’s story next!

There were a few times that I felt the internal back and forth of the characters/conversations to be a bit drawn out, but it didn’t take me out of the story.

Content: no-spice/kisses-only romance; mild peril; some violence (not described in detail), social drinking (borderline drunkenness)

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Title: A Troublesome Circumstance
Series: Courting the Unconventional, Book 8
Author: Laura Beers
⭐️⭐️

📝 My Thoughts: Disappointing, Dull, Dukedom
Disappointing Drop-off. After loving Luca's story, I was so hyped for Jude! I really expected a deeper backstory for his pain. Instead, this book hit every tired trope. The pacing was super rushed, leaving the romance feeling completely surface level with zero real character growth. Josephine came across as dramatic instead of sympathetic, refusing to listen to reason, while Jude felt way too whiny for a duke's heir complaining about his lot in life! On top of that, the audiobook narrator sounded like a harsh, raspy drill sergeant rather than a sweet Regency heroine, which completely sucked me out of the story!

💖 Why I Loved It:
Honestly? Not much. I kept listening on Hoopla, giving it chance after chance because I wanted it to get better, but it just fell flat for me. The only real highlight is that the overarching series concept is still fun if you enjoy light Regencies.

🔖 Favorite Quote:
"I have been in half-agony, half-hope,” he began, “that your brother’s words were true. Because the truth of the matter is that… I love you, Josie. Desperately. Madly.”

📌 Final Verdict:
A major letdown compared to the previous books in the series, most of which I rated 4/5 stars, but diehard sweet Regency fans might still find it a quick filler read.

I so enjoyed Book 8 in this Courting the Unconventional Series. Each book could be a stand alone story but the characters and stories do carryover from book to book so it is best to read them in order.

As usual there are problems that need to be overcome by the MMC and FMC before the story ends. This story takes off as Lady Josephine Tweedale has to escape from an overturned carriage. She had been kidnapped from a ball by a man trying to take her to Greta Green to force her to marry him.
Wounded with torn clothes she has to find a place of safety from the weather and the man who kidnapped her. She finds a small gamekeeper's cottage deep in the woods and she falls alseep in the small stable nearby. She has no idea the man who finds her is actually Jude Dexter, Earl of Pendryn and he lets her believe he is the gamekeeper.

When Jude Dexter, Earl of Pendryn finds the wounded woman he hides his identity because he doesn't want to be forced into a marriage with her since they are alone overnight in the small gamekeeper's cottage. Jude struggles with his responsibilities of being his father's heir and stepping into his shoes sometime in the future. Coming to the gamekeepers house on one of his family's properties help him get away from the demands he faces. He also doesn't trust women after he heard the woman he was courting reveal she didn't love him. So he will protect himself from being tricked into marriage by any woman.

Jude soon realizes that Josephine is much different than any woman he has met yet he keeps up his pretense of being the gamekeeper. When she returns to her family, he must also return to London and he feels a need to continue to protect her.

After Josephine's horrifying experience with the kidnapping and her brother not believing her story she has no idea who to trust. Her issue with trust gets worse when she discovers who Jude really is and that he lied to her. The danger from her kidnapper continues to plague her as he refuses to take no for an answer.

Will Jude be able to regain her trust as he continues to try to protect her? Will he give her the only real protection that will save her, his name in marriage?

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

I have to say, this book was incredibly disappointing. I’d been waiting for it for so long because I really enjoyed the series, but unfortunately, this has been the weakest book so far. And honestly, I’m more annoyed by how poorly written it felt than anything else.

For God’s sake, I can understand falling in love at first sight, but in this book, everything happened so ridiculously fast that the romance ended up feeling superficial rather than believable. There was no time for the relationship—or the characters—to actually develop.

And the constant emphasis on how Josefina was the only one who truly understood him, how she was so different, etc… okay, but where was the actual substance? I kept waiting for her to stand out in a meaningful way, but she ended up being one of the plainest heroines I’ve ever read. Nothing about her felt particularly outstanding or memorable.

The book had so much potential and sounded incredibly promising, which is probably why I kept talking myself out of DNFing it. I gave it chance after chance because I’d been looking forward to its release for so long.

Unfortunately, by the end, I was left feeling completely let down. “Disappointing” honestly feels like an understatement.

Laura Beers does it again.
Laura Beers has the ability to pull you in at the first page and keep you pulled in to the end. You know where the story is going and then she adds another surprise. Lady Josephine was abducted being taken to Gretna Green, when the carriage flips and she escapes. Running through the surrounding woods she is drawn to a light from a small cottage. Obviously, a gamekeeper’s home. But is it really and is the man inside the gamekeeper? Jude, the Earl of Pendryn, is startled to discover a woman injured, wet, cold, and asleep in his drafty stable. Knowing she won’t survive the night there, he takes her into the cottage. What happens now, if anyone discovers they had been alone both would be ruined. Perhaps remaining a gamekeeper has its value. When danger appears again will they be able to protect each other and their budding attraction? And where is the real danger located? A wonderful read I did not want to put down. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

This was a fun, dramatic Regency romance that is in a series but could easily work as a standalone. Josephine has been abducted by an unsavory business partner of her brother's headed for Gretna Green and manages to escape the overturned carriage into the woods, where she finds refuge in what she assumes to be the gamekeeper's cottage. It is actually the refuge of Jude, a Duke, but he keeps up the gamekeeper ruse as long as he can to protect her reputation. She is angry when she discovers his lies and refuses to marry him unless she gets the love match she's always wanted. This is a really exciting setup, and we also get a sideplot second chance parent romance as a convenient bonus. I do think aspects of the romance sometimes derivative - I didn't believe it when the MMC stole Wentworth's "half agony half hope" line directly - but that did make the narrative very accessible, and overall I had a fun time reading this. Beers is talented at creating worlds that feel full of people who care.

Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.

Delightful, charming, and oh so swoony. This story captures your heart and attention right off the bat. Josephine has been kidnapped and was on her way to Gretna Green. “The only memory she had was of the carriage tilting perilously, the thunder of hooves, and her own desperate leap into the dark.” and now she finds herself all alone, cold and hungry in the middle of nowhere running for her life. I could not put the book down after that intro and it only gets better. The lies and deceit nearly overwhelmed Josephine. Who can she trust? Her brother, her uncle, Lord Pendryn they’re all the same, aren’t they? The story will keep you on your toes until the very end. It is very engaging, has great, witty, banter, and sweet romance. I have loved all of the books in the series. Each one can be read as a standalone and is a clean, wholesome adventurous romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Josie and Jude have such a sweet story! I loved how protective Jude and Josie are of each other and how much they love each other, even when they struggled to admit it to themselves.

It was nice to watch Jude grow and realize that there are people who will care for him just because of who he is and now for what he has or can give them. It was difficult for him to come to terms with that, but Josie’s care helped greatly.

I loved Josie’s kindness and strength. She didn’t just sit back and allow the problems she was facing to swallow her happiness, she fought through them and did what she thought was best to protect those she loves.

You should check out this book if you enjoy regency romance with a dash of mystery and danger.

Thank you to Laura for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The Brief: Lady Josephine escapes to a cottage and is kept safe by the gamekeeper, who rolls with her assumptions.

The Debrief: This is such a wonderful story filled with laughter, courage, and a bit of danger. Jude was such a big softie and watching him step into his role and accept himself was satisfying. I easily rooted for Josie. The supporting cast had my heart and laughs. So much fun. And a twisty ending to keep things hopping! Another great read by @author_laura_beers

The Rhyme: Josephine wants a marriage based on love. Her hopes get shattered when they get a drastic shove.

Complimentary copy. My own thoughts. Part of a series, and I’ve read the one just before this, but I think they stand alone. Looking forward to the next book!

Laura Beers creates these beautiful stories that draw me in time after time. Two characters that feel out of place, are able to truly see each other. It is so important to be known and this story shows that wonderfully.

Josephine seeks refuge at Jude’s humble cottage and mistakes him for the game keeper. Will secrets damage the friendship that is forming?

Highlights:
Cottage confessions
The masquerade ball

Josephine knows what she wants: to read books and marry for love, and I love that. I love that she is brave and kind to everyone regardless of status.

I love Jude for being a protective gentleman. I love how he doesn’t seek praise and how he honors his father despite not always agreeing with him.

This was an ARC, all thoughts are my own.

Regency romance is my go to stress read so very thankful I received an ARC of this from the author’s team when I did!

(Some spoilers)

It took me a minute to get into it because it starts out so differently from other Regency romances - the FMC has just survived a carriage accident and is running from the man who abducted her. At first it was like why should I care and maybe I would have liked to be eased in a bit more but then things kept developing and in hindsight it was actually a nice change of pace. Things I appreciated:

-the attraction focused more on personality than physicality at first
-the relationship between the FMC and her brother wasn’t perfect but wasn’t completely antagonistic either
-there were clues of who the ultimate villain was but it wasn’t as cut and dried as you would guess starting out

Looking forward to the next book!

This series is fantastic. I love these characters. This is Jude's story.
Jude is the heir to a Duke and he feels all the pressure of that responsibility. Having been fooled once by a woman who claimed to love him, but really only wanted him for his title, he is wary of love.
Josephine is a lady. She meets Jude in a stable after she escapes from being abducted by a despicable man. She mistakes Jude for a gamekeeper. Jude doesn't do anything to dissuade her of that notion.
What they don't expect is to fall in love. Their road is filled with evil men, misunderstandings and misguided judgement. But love has a way of prevailing.

This book has it all! Forced proximity, scandal, and more than one villain. Jude and Josephine are perfect together, and I loved his protective side. Both of them have been hurt. He has learned not to trust women, as most seem to only be interested in his title. She is trying to avoid the life changing scandal that would come with society finding out she had been kidnapped by a man determined to take her to Gretna Green. Their meeting and time in the cabin are so sweet! Laura’s books are always so well written, and this one is no exception. Now I have to patiently wait for the next book in the series.

Wow. We hit the ground running in A Troublesome Circumstance, and I loved every minute.

Lady Josephine’s will to fight, her grit, and determination pulled me in immediately. Jude’s grumpy and cautious, but also kind personality made me eager to see how everything would work out as the story continued after his first meeting with Josephine.

I loved how the book flowed. The lurking danger, tender moments, humor, and connection between Josephine and Jude made the story so hard to put down.

If you’re looking for a book that will keep you flipping the pages, even though you should probably go to bed, then you’ll love A Troublesome Circumstance.

I was given a complimentary copy of A Troublesome Circumstance. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

clean and wholesome romance

The author weaves a story that grabs attention from the first page.
From kidnapping, danger and unsolved mysteries.
I was so surprised when the culprit was found!
The interaction of the two main characters is one of kindness and care. Both struggled to be accepted for themselves and not what a title or society expected.
It has been a fun series and this book has held true to form.
I recommend all the books in the series and look forward to reading the next one!

I’m not really sure the best way to say this, but initially I was enjoying this story and then it became kind of hokey and clunky. I just didn’t feel like the dialogue flowed in a believable way for the time period and the characters all seemed kind of immature and goofy. It had some potential, but I just read A Most Unfortunate Happenstance by Esther Hatch, which also had two characters meeting in a cabin late at night, caretaking and secret identify (and I loved it!) so I think comparatively, this one just didn’t do it for me.

This book was very melodramatic. It was also a clean and entertaining read! Everyone overreacted when en they had the chance, and escalated any situation to the next level. The story reminds me of the writing of Anne Radcliffe in some ways, which made it fun to keep reading. The love that both main characters found was so gratifying at the end, and I loved the justice that waited for the villains! I received an ARC copy and this is my review.
