She’s a prim-and-proper childcare director. He’s a growly fire chief. Madeline Crossman is done with high society. Moving to a small town for a fresh start, she’s focused on keeping her twin nieces safe, not falling for a grumpy, no-nonsense fire chief. But when Chief Sebastien French storms into her life, commandeering her car, clashing with her at work, and making her heart race in all the wrong (or right?) ways, resisting him becomes impossible. She’s all elegance and organic lattes. He’s all grit and steak dinners. When Madeline’s past comes knocking, will their unlikely bond be strong enough to withstand the heat? If you love grumpy-sunshine banter, protective heroes, and forced proximity at its finest, this fiery rom-com is for you!
WHO IS ALEXANDRA? Alexandra Isobel is a Canadian interracial romance author that writes books that deliver passion, drama, and heart-pounding twists. Set in the highly romanticized everyday world, her culturally infused stories promise the reader intense alpha heroes and quirky heroines while blending forbidden love with unexpected redemption arcs.
Tropes: Workplace Romance, Enemies to Lovers, He Falls First, First Responder, Alpha MC, Suspense, Caregiver, Opposites Attract Order & Chaos: Firehouse 21 by Alexandra House is a taut enemies to lovers, opposites attract romance story set in the busy world of a firehouse. Madeline Crossman has changed the trajectory of her world, pulling up stakes and moving across country with her young nieces. She is trying to put distance between her abusive former brother-in-law. He may be currently locked away from society; however, he still presents an active danger. One could call it a meet-cute when Fire Chief Sebastien French commandeers her car to make it to the scene of a fire. Cute, perhaps, but Madeline is incensed and is even more so when she learns that Sebastien is the captain of the fire station where she is the new director of the daycare! For Sebastien it is attraction and interest at first sight. He tries to breach the walls Madeline has erected, concerned at her level of seemingly paranoia. He is determined to both help her and make her feel safe. Will Madeline allow this honorable man to infiltrate her fortress or will the scars and betrayal of the past forever keep her second guessing and looking over her shoulders? Conclusion: The main characters in this story were so cute, especially Madeline’s two nieces. It took a while for Madeleine to trust Sebastien with her secrets and those secrets were extremely disturbing! I enjoyed the camaraderie of the firehouse and the bonds of their found family. The villain was especially nasty, and, in my opinion, he received less comeuppance than he would ever deserve! Final words, I always enjoy Ms. Isobel’s books; they are generally action-packed with likable characters and interesting plots. Favorite Lines:
He searched her fingers for a ring; oddly relieved at not seeing one.
An unsettling mix of strange jealousy and frustration bubbled up inside him, which was ridiculous,
"They aren't all for you." Madeline stared as he marched out of the room. "Re-gifter—" he tossed the accusation over his shoulder.
This is the story of a brash fire chief, Sebastien, and buttoned-up childcare director Madeline. They are an unlikely pair, yet circumstances keep putting them together! Sebastien falls first, but Madeline has a lot of drama from her past to settle before she can move forward with a relationship.
I wanted to love this book. This premise was right up my alley and that first chapter was quite the hook! That said, there was something about the writing style that was just off to me. I think it felt like it would be a sweet romance, although it wasn't. It is reminiscent of the Harlequin romances I used to sneak from my mom's break room at work as a teen, but not necessarily what I read today. I could deal with it, if I actually bought their relationship. I couldn't for the life of me see how the two of them would be a couple, other than proximity. I was not feeling the love.
The book could also use a run-through with a copy/formatting editor as there were some spots with odd punctuation or spacing, missing quotation marks, that sort of thing. Also, this book was billed as an interracial romance but, other than the cover art and a couple of mentions of Madeline's hair and grandmother in Trinidad, I would have had no idea she was Black. That felt like a missed opportunity.
That said, I feel like this story has a lot of potential. It just doesn't feel done to me yet.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
ORDER & CHAOS strikes a rare balance between action, warmth, sexual tension, and a slow-burning romance. It kept me flipping the pages as I didn't want to put the book down. The banter between Madeline and Sebastian is sharp and playful, and their chemistry leaps off the pages from their first encounter (which is unique and will have you smiling and laughing).
What I enjoyed was that this isn't just a romance as the suspense elevates their budding relationship, and the suspenseful elements give the plot momentum, adding high stakes beyond a typical romantic journey.
If you enjoy authentic opposites-attract dynamics, forced proximity, a tight plot with well-written character arcs, in a small-town setting, then this book is for you.
The humour, steam level, and heartfelt scenes, along with a gripping, suspenseful storyline, will have you reading non-stop.
I didn’t know where or how this story would unfold from the beginning and the wild fire truck chase scene. I also didn’t expect the fireman we first encounter to be the main character. This romance took a long and winding road to resolve the mystery of Madeline Crossman and her twin nieces showing up in fire Captain, Christian Sebastien French’s firehouse and life.
I liked the premise of the story, but found it a bit slow. However, it wrapped up quickly and nicely with a happy ending for all involved.
Sigh. Ms. Isobel’s writing is visceral, swoony, and real. Madeleine and Sebastian’s chemistry is off the charts and in turns amusing and intense, so likable! I want to hang out with them forever! This is what romance novels are made of.
