Carter Sullivan, foster brother in the famous Campbell family, never had it easy. He was an abused kid, tortured by dealers, in and out of juvenile detention until he was sent to the Circle C Ranch to be fostered. Life got better, but when Carter was eighteen, his ex-girlfriend pushed his baby daughter into his arms and took off, never to be seen again. Carter raised his daughter, Faith, on his own, with the help of the four wild Campbell brothers and his foster mom, the first person who ever believed in him.

Grace Malory always had a crush on Carter, the dark and damaged man who never quite fit in to the close community of Riverbend. When Carter’s foster mom needs help running the domestic side of the ranch, Grace is ready to help out with all the cooking for the brothers and their new families.

Carter’s troubles rise again in the form of his ex-girlfriend who returns to try to claim custody of Faith. Carter’s greatest fear is losing his daughter, and he turns to Grace to help him in a desperate deception to keep Faith with him forever.

Carter is the third book in Riding Hard series and I probably should've read them in order to make it a more enjoyable experience.

As it was now, I couldn't really understand the depth of Grace and Carter's relationship or Lizzie and Joss' interactions with Carter. Joss being such a dangerous villain came as a surprise to me and I also had a hard time linking Carter's past to how he acts in the present.

The romance in itself was good no doubt but it would have been infinitely better if I had known the characters from the previous books.

Ok this one annoyed me a little bit and I think I'm just being a bit 'funny' about it all but I'm still going to say it.
1. What 9 year old girl is that mature? Faith is more like a teenager than a child. The conversations she has with her dad are just mind blowing. In saying that maybe she has to mature quicker than others.
2. No one seems overly bothered that Carter and Grace are suddenly engaged even when no one has ever seen them together. Random!
3. In the first 2 books both brothers seem to get on it without a condom and it was never really discussed and I think initially I didn't think much of it. But in this one Carter and Grace have sex for the first time and after it he is all like "oh well if she gets pregnant" - now no offense mate but isn't that kind of what happened the first time and you got a kid out of that. Seemed like a bit of a weird thing. (and yes I know this makes me sound like a prude - I'm not)
Apart from those items I still really enjoyed this story and can't wait to read more.

***updated 2/20/20 OMG!!! I just finished this book and jumped on here to give my 2-star rating and to my SHOCK, I read this back in 2015! And gave it 2-stars then too🤣 What's even funnier is everything I thought as I was reading this time around, I had mentioned in my old review. Too funny! Obviously this didn't stick with me the first time I read it. Original review below***

This was just "meh..." for me. I did not like that the h/H already had strong feelings for each other before the book even started. Because of this, there really wasn't much growth to witness and was therefore bored because I missed out on most of the good parts. Had a hard time understanding why the loved each other. I also thought the 9 year old's dialogue was NOT how a nine yr old speaks. It kept throwing me off because I kept thinking she was in the 13-15 age group. This wasn't badly written, just boring.

Working at the Campbell's ranch helps Grace Malory earn enough to repay loans that were stolen by her unscrupulous ex. It lets her perfect her kitchen skills and ensures she sees Carter daily. Since she's also a partial nanny to nine year old Faith it lets Grace pretend. The last person Grace expected to see was Faith's mother who had abandoned her as an infant.

One thing hasn't changed for Grace in 15 years. Grace wanted honorary Campbell, Carter Sullivan, the moment she saw him. She wanted him when he was the unknown new boy at school with a bad reputation. Grace wanted him when he was the rebellious teen with an attitude and an infant to parent and she still wants him today.

Carter deserved his bad boy reputation. He'd been used, abused, mistreated and abandoned. He'd gained street smarts the hard way. And Carter turned his life into what he wanted it to be when he was given an opportunity. It wasn't always easy being a Sullivan among Campbell's but that changed when Sullivan made room for Campbell in his life the way Campbell's made room for Sullivan in theirs.

Ugh, nothing's more annoying than precocious children and Faith, much more mature than her years, was no exception. This reader was quickly over Faith being smarter than anyone else in the room. That aside, the Campbell's supported and helped Carter with whatever help he needed including with Faith. Even though the community hadn't always welcomed Carter, he was their own.

Now that his past has reared its ugly head just as Carter's figured out how much he cares for Grace, Carter's got to reach back to that past to cement a future. For my taste, this outing was more appealing than the last.

Carter was every exciting thing I expected him to be after seeing peaks of him in the first two books in the series. Grace is sweet, funny and so loving with a backbone born from being raised with two older brothers. She is the perfect sweet to his salty. This is a great story with lots of action and adventure as well as love and family bounds that nothing can break.

Hopeful for more of this series

Just Right For Me!!!

Grace Malory has always had a crush on Carter Campbell, the sexy, brooding, bad boy of the Campbell family. When Grace lost everything thanks to her crooked ex-boyfriend, she jumped to the opportunity that was giving to her to work on the Campbell's ranch as their cook.

Sure she needed the money but she also wanted, no she NEEDED to be close to Carter. Over the years, Grace's crush turned into something more. She never told Carter how she felt. Even if the man never saw her as anything more than a friend (or did he now!?). It wouldn't waver her feeling for him.

Carter Sullivan had been abused in his childhood, got himself in lots of trouble, he was in an out of juvenile detention, until he was adopted by the Campbells. When he was eighteen, Carter's life changed when his ex-girlfriend put their daughter in his arms and never looked back.

With the help of his adoptive brothers and their mother, Olivia Campbell. Together they raised his daughter, Faith to be a happy and beautiful child. Just as Carter felt like his life couldn't get any better than it already was, his past came back to destroy everything he and his loved ones built.

Grace got hurt and all the feelings Carter had been pushing down came up on the surface. He too had falling madly in love with Grace yet he never told her. Not wanting to take any chances, Carter finally decided to tell Grace how he felt.

As he felt like his old life was sucking him back in, Carter held on to Grace and what she represented for him....A safe haven. She was his guiding light through the darkness, along with his daughter and family. Grace gave Carter, HOPE.

Grace took a major step in order to help Carter out, in doing so, she changed the course of their relationship in such way that wven though Carter wasn't pleased at first. He couldn't help but admire and admit to himself, that's what he wanted to do the first time, he saw Grace.

Faith was one intelligent girl, she asked the question the adults should have asked when Elizabeth showed up in Carter's life again....Why come looking for Faith now, when she didn't want anything to do with her, years ago?

Well Faith, Carter, Grace and the Campbells got their answers, Lizzie was forced into going after Carter. But she wanted to be a part of Faith's life which didn't sit well with her blackmailer.

When Carter found himself in terrible danger, Grace, Faith and his brothers never gave up until he was safe and sound back home with them.

CARTER is the third book in Jennifer Ashley's RIDING HARD series. Loved the strong bond between Carter and Faith, the father-daughter duo was a force to be reckoned with. The book was heartwarming, fascinating, humorous, sexy and emotional. Magnificent job by Jennifer Ashley. 5++++

Carter's and Grace's story kept you on your toes

Okay so this was soooooo good. I loved the silent, broody Carter and I loved that he melted for his daughter Faith who by the way is the life of the book. She's going to be one tough cookie no holds bar. Carter has always had a thing for Grace but little did he know she also has always had a thing for Carter. I truly though her brothers Ray and Kyle would try to stop the attraction but she stood her ground.

The disturbing part of the story was when Carter's ex came to the ranch and shot Grace, I was like OMG she didn't just do that. The story seemed to turn darker at that point. His ex wanting custody of her daughter (which would never happen) Carter going to Houston to confront his old boss I seriously thought he'd end up in jail. Holding my breath the entire time. The major twist was when Grace yelled out in the Hospital to Billy they were engaged the heads turned so fast. Carter exploded and tried to deny it. He did not want Grace involved, what he didn't understand she already was and could supply him with an alibi. The other shocking twist was with his ex OMG so honestly I seriously didn't trust anything out of her mouth but apparently Carter did. UGH men. But all worked out in the end and my heart loved that Carter actually proposed to Grace. Of course Faith was totally over the moon. Great read, now off to read Tyler's.

I have read this many years ago when I read the first two but that review is missing.
I will say I didn’t rush to read this book as I disliked book two and as I don’t remember this, it cannot have made much of an impression. No further books were available back then so I never bothered with this series after this book.
Picked these up to reread as I grabbed the book SNOWBOUND IN STARLIGHT BEND, not realising it was the next book in this series.
Pleasant enough read that passed the time and I enjoyed all the horses and stunts more than the people. But I just found a few things unbelievable.
Faith sounds and acts way too mature, more like 15 than 9 years of age.
Lizzie turning up and being a completely nasty piece of work but suddenly all repentant and grievous over Faith didn’t feel believable and I cannot see her changing her ways. Faith interacting with her at that age was just going to leave behind problems over the years. No 9-year-old child is that balanced.
Grace forgiving Lizzie after everything that she caused to happen just didn’t feel right. I would have had a shotgun out.
If Grace had died, which she nearly did, Lizzie wouldn’t have cared. So that really didn’t work for me.
Read and reviewed years ago but reviews are missing. Just doing a short review this time.
Do enjoy another couple of series by this author much more.

Valahogy mégse állnak össze a könyvek.

So far, this is my favorite of the Riding Hard series. I listened to the Audiobook of Carter. I thought the narration was good. The characters were easily distinguishable.

I was glad that Carter and Grace finally ended up together. I liked them together. I liked that Carter started to thaw out with Grace. I thought the romantic overtures were mild, but the physical parts were steamy. I wish there had been more written about their relationship growing and developing.

I enjoyed reading about Carter's past and how he had changed while living with the Campbell's. I would not have minded at all if the book had been longer to explain a few things with more detail. I also would have appreciated an epilogue to see what life was like for Carter and Grace after the HEA. I wondered what happened with Lizzie after the incident with Josh was resolved.

The end was a bit abrupt, and I was a little disappointed. I did enjoy the book, but I admit that I wanted more of Grace and Carter. I will be moving on to the next book in the series. I'm not sure if it is Tyler's, Ross', or Kyle. My guess is Ray will get a book too.

I was looking forward to Carter and Grace's story and I wasn't disappointed.
This one had lots of drama and action in it along with some violence but it was expected as Cater came from a hard childhood that then spilled over into his life now.
I must admit I wasn't really happy with how Carter's ex (and Faith's mum) was dealt with after what she did to Grace and I felt like it was swept under the rug with Grace just supposed to accept her apology and move on, didn't really sit well with me but oh well.
I loved Grace, who has had a thing for Carter for years and I found it so endearing that Carter, this big tough man go so shy and a little tongue tide around Grace.
Loved their chemistry together and so happy they both finally get a HEA.
We see all the brothers again along with Graces brothers and I look forward to reading more about them.

Similar to the rest of the series, Carter is one of the brothers who live/work/run a family owned ranch in Texas. This is his story and in true romance fashion, it's a HEA. Seriously, did we honestly expect anything less? No, I didn't which was the whole point. These are easy reads and the story moves fairly quickly. I personally love these between other things I've been reading for a nice break from all of the randomness of everything else because it's something quick you can rely on. No big surprises and no devastating drama. Definitely a romance recommend. From one book nerd to another, happy reading.

DIVINE!

I just cannot say enough about this author's writing! Although shorter than I like to read, her stories always have the right mix of romance, adventure, and hot sex! This story is no exception! The perceived bad boy, Carter, has loved Grace since he was 9 years old and she welcomed him to his new school. Grace, the town's good girl, has also loved Carter for many years. When an old nemesis threatens Carter and everyone he loves he fights the battle of his life to stop him.

Another enjoyable story in this ongoing series.

Good read

I chose this book because I've read others in this series and love cowboys and big family stories. There was danger, suspense, romance, humor and hot sex. The family interaction between brothers is fantastic. They may fight, but let no one try to come between them and they are protective to a T. Grace has loved Carter since middle school and vice versa, but each was too afraid to let the other know. Will his childhood past catch up to him? Read to see. Highly recommend.

I was looking forward to this book (I always seem to go for the "troubled" ones!) and it didn't disappoint.

I liked Carter with his troubled past, rough personality, and gooey soft centre. I love the way he was so sweet with his daughter Faith, and totally out of depth with Grace. I liked Grace too, with her sweet nature but quiet strength. Both were good characters and worked well together.

I enjoyed this story.

Carter fought for the loves of his life

Grace had moved back home and she had always liked Carter but he didn't get along well with her family. Grace goes to work for The Circle C Ranch much to Carter's dislike. One day he kissed Grace and then he is told to protect his daughter from her rich grandparents he should marry..it all starts as a way for him to protect Faith but end with a family of 3!

I didn't read the other books in this series and it didn't take away from the story. I enjoyed this even though it was a novella. The beginning was fast paced and interesting with someone being shot almost immediately. Carter and Grace had some steamy attraction that didn't seem forced.
Faith, Carter's daughter is entertaining and cute. I'd like to go back and read the other books in this series

Fantastic!

I absolutely loved Carter and Grace's story. Their story will touch your heart . Carter the total bad boy and Grace the total good girl are drawn to each other like magnets. There is so much more to Carter than meets the eye. The danger and suspense will keep you glued to the pages!

Great series

There is plenty of action and danger in Carter and Grace 's story, which shouldn't come as a surprise for fans of the series who knew about Carter's difficult childhood before being adopted by the Campbells. Old enemies reemerge and Carter has to rely on his whole family to keep his dream life together.

Wow

Loved Carters story, such a gentle giant of a man. Such a troubled upbringing and took the love of a family to turn him into a man with a heart of gold and love. Took a good woman to show him how.
Narration was awesome too.

Good read

This was so much better than the first two books in the series. It starts off with a bang and ends in surprise. In between the two, it keeps you guessing what's going to happen next. Oh, and there is another sweet surprise at the end of the book.
