A quick fun read with some real LOL moments.... but without any meaning.
The only teakeaway is you are bound to reminisce over your college days.
Pretty straightforward and realistic writing, right from skectching the characters, to the kind of abusive language in conversations, to the setting of BHU hostel... not at all pretentious and I liked it for its honesty.
Cover:
The front cover design is beautiful.... except that yellow "best-seller" tag which Hind Yugm deliberately puts up on all its publications!
The back cover contains all praises from different sources, without giving away the blurb. Which is a good idea. Bcoz had I read the blurb, I would have known its neither about Banaras nor about Talkies and would never have picked it.
Be careful when you see that next "best seller" from Hind Yugm!
So my thoughts at 25% sums it up - Good velocity but no gravity.

I do not re-read books, have hardly re-read a dozen books. But, must have read Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone a dozen times atleast. And I think I have hardly read any fantasy (not even GOT) apart from Harry Potter which I picked up as a school story. Am in love with them.
This book was like a breath of fresh air. While the setting was the same as FPS, it was more original than d movie "3 idiots", dear Hiraniji & team :P
The greatest charm was the language and the unpretentious way of writing. The greatest strength was d characters and their interactions. I laughed so much on reading a book after quite some time.
But while the characters are its strength, the lack of a good central plot/story is a weakness. Maybe you wont mind it because of the other plusses.
Am starting off with Delhi Darbar by d same author. Keep writing dear Satya Vyas. May God grant u a movie deal too for this book :)
And thank u Amazon Kindle for providing us Hindi books. This is like discovering ebooks all over again.

Guess the original script is much better than this.
A short novel about three friends who just joined college at a new place away far away from their hometown, struggling to keep up with their new found independence and new relationships.
They do try their best to find short cuts about anything and everything possible but things turn out to be quite different from what they expected, of course!
It is a short, fun, easy read perfect for beginners and teenagers.
I feel the translation could have been much better. Also, I feel I am not the perfect audience for this book as it feels too young for me now.
I would have definitely enjoyed this book more if I had read it a decade ago.
One issue for me was the lack of character development and half hearted representation of the main female character.

दुनिया की है शान बनारस, अजब है मेरी जान बनारस
वैसे देखा जाए तो हर किसी को अपने गाँव या शहर से एक विशेष लगाव होता है पर हम बनारसियों में यह भावना कुछ ज्यादा ही प्रबल होती है। उस पर मेरे जैसे लोग जो रोज़ी रोटी की तलाश में भोलेनाथ की इस नगरी से सैकड़ों मील दूर हैं, उनके लिए बनारस से जुडी कोई भी वस्तु यादों और खुशियों का कितना बड़ा खज़ाना होती है इस बात का अहसास शायद एक बनारसी ही कर सकता है। और इन सब बातों से परे कशी हिन्दू विश्व विद्यालय (अंग्रेजी में बोले तो BHU ) का एक पूर्व छात्र होने के नाते जब मुझे सत्य व्यास जी की इस कृति के बारे में पता चला तो इसको ना पढ़ने का तो कोई सवाल ही नहीं था।
अच्छा ये तो हुयी sentimental बातें, अब आते हैं पुस्तक की समीक्षा पर (जो आप समझ सकते हैं कि कुछ हद तक Biased हो सकती है) - मेरे हिसाब से यह एक अच्छी, simple और lighthearted कहानी है। हो सकता है कि जो बनारस से ज्यादा परिचित न हों उन्हें कुछ ठेठ शब्दों / गालियों से आपत्ति हो पर यह सब सचमुच में बनारस के साधारण जन-जीवन का एक अभिन्न अंग हैं और उन्हें आपत्तिजनक शब्दों के तौर पर नहीं देखा जाना चाहिए। यहाँ दोस्तों के बीच प्रचलित गलियां तो प्यार ज्यादा होती हैं और मेरे हिसाब से लेखक ने जो बनारसी रस पकड़ा है वह काबिल-ए-तारीफ़ है। BHU Campus के अंदर की वो हॉस्टल लाइफ हो या हमारे मुख्य पात्रों की लंकेटिंग के समय हिंदुस्तान होटल, मॉडर्न पेन कंपनी, पिज़्ज़ेरिया या अपने BBC (बनारस बर्गर कार्नर) का ज़िक्र, सभी कुछ इतना वास्तविक था कि मैं उन ३-४ घंटों के लिए सचमुच वापस बनारस पहुंच गया था।
जैसा कि मैंने कहा यह एक बहुत ही simple और non complicated कहानी है जिसे आप अपने हॉस्टल के दिनों कि याद करके मज़े से पढ़ सकते हैं। लगभग सारे पात्र वास्तविक से प्रतीत होते हैं - चाहे वो क्रिकेट भक्त अनुराग दादा हों, फिल्म ज्ञानी नवेंदु जी हों, तिकड़म बाज और जुगाड़ू दूबे जी या हमारे कहानी के सूत्रधार कविता लेखक और गर्ल्स होस्टल्स के प्रेमी सूरज भाई साहब। मुझे लगता है आपको हर एक BHU हॉस्टल में ऐसे लोग मिल जायेंगे और सच पूछा जाये तो मैं इनके बारे में पढ़ते समय उनके चेहरों में अपने हॉस्टल के समान गुण वाले दोस्तों के चेहरे महसूस कर सकता था। इसीलिए यह कहानी मुझे वास्तविकता के इतने नज़दीक लगी लेकिन फिर भी जिस तरह से व्यास जी ने एक साधारण हॉस्टल जीवन में हास्यरस पिरोया है वह सराहनीय है। मैंने पुस्तक के लगभग आधे पन्ने एक मुस्कान के साथ पढ़े और कभी-कभी तो थोड़ी देर के लिए खुलकर हंसा भी।
शुरू में तो आपको सभी चैप्टर्स एक नयी और अलग घटना लगते हैं जिनका एक दुसरे से पात्रों के अलावा और कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं लगता परन्तु लेखक ने आखिर में जिस तरह से उन सभी चैप्टर्स कि घटनाओं को जोड़ा है वह काफी दिलचस्प है। खास बात यह है कि उन्होंने इतनी छोटी बड़ी घटनाओँ का ज़िक्र किया है कि आप यह सोच भी नहीं सकते कि इतने सारे वाकयों में से कुछ इस तरह से एक दुसरे से जुड़कर एक बड़ी घटना बना सकते हैं। इस ताने बाने को बुनने के लिए लेखक को पूरे अंक। कहानी का अंत भी काफी अच्छा है और पूरी पुस्तक में एक फील गुड फैक्टर सा है।
तो अगर सभी चीजों को सम्मिलित रूप से देखा जाये तो यह हिंदी लेखनी में एक उत्कृष्ट रचना तो नहीं परन्तु एक पढ़ने योग्य अच्छी कहानी है जो आपको हसायेगी ज़रूर, खासकर बनारसियों और BHU के छात्रों के लिए तो MUST READ.

When I wanted to read a modern Hindi novel in Hindi, and someone suggested Satya Vyas, I decided to pick up "Banaras Talkies". My father graduated from BHU, and I thought it would be nice to read a book set on the campus he knew so intimately many decades back. Little did I realise that I was signing up for a project that would take me many frustrating months to complete.
Others describe the book as a 'quick read', and I suppose it is one. The problem, for me, was not just that I lack fluency in Hindi. The problem is that when I do not immediately recognise a word, I spell it out till the letters arrange themselves into a word I recognise. This book, however, has many English words spelt in the Devnagiri script, so after coming to the end of a word, I would trash around helplessly repeating the world till I finally understood it was actually an English word. I could, and should, have abandoned the book, but I wanted to test my fortitude and I persisted.
I am glad I did, because what seemed like a set of random incidents all came together in the end, and the book revealed itself as having a plot with everything leading upto it.
Will I attempt reading a Hindi book again? I might, if only for the sense of accomplishment I feel at the end of it!

यह सत्य व्यास जी द्वारा लिखित मेरी दूसरी किताब है और मैं अब बेशक कह सकती हूँ कि उनके लेखन में एक अनोखा जादू है जो आपको किताब के आखिरी पन्ने तक बाँधे रखता है और कहीं पर भी बोर नहीं होने देता। पहले पन्ने से लेकर अंत तक मेरे चेहरे पर मुस्कान बनी रही और कम से कम 50 बार तो मैं खुद को ठहाके लगाने से रोक नहीं पाई, जो कि अक्सर नहीं होता।
चौरासी के उलट इस किताब में गालियों का भरपूर प्रयोग हुआ है (जो कि शायद लड़कों की कॉलेज लाइफ दिखाने के लिए आवश्यक था), जिसने शुरुआत में मुझे थोड़ा असहज कर दिया था, पर धीरे-धीरे इसकी आदत हो गई। इसके मुख्य किरदार चौरासी जितने जानदार न सही पर बहुत मनोरंजक हैं। लगता है मुझे खुद को समझाना कि चौरासी जैसी किताब बार-बार नहीं बनती। मैं लेखक का अगला उपन्यास पढ़ने के लिए बहुत उत्सुक हूँ।

बनारस टॉकीज ऐसे तीन दोस्तों की कहानी है जो बनारस हिन्दू यूनिवर्सिटी में लॉ पढ़ने आए है और अगले तीन सालो तक हॉस्टल ही इनका घर भी है और परिवार भी।
कहानी में कॉलेज लाइफ, हॉस्टल लाइफ और उनसे जुड़े हुए कई हास्यास्पद किस्से है जो आपको गुदगुदाते है और स्टूडेंट जीवन के एक पहलु से भी अवगत कराते है। यह वाकई में एक रोमांचक कहानी है जिससे लेखक ने बहुत ही कुशलता से लिखा है।
कहानी के केंद्र में तीन लड़के है जिनके इर्द-गिर्द कहानी गड़ी गई है। ये है सूरज, जयवर्धन और अनुराग।
कहानी मनोरंजक है और एक किताब के पहलु से देखा जाये तो एक अच्छी किताब की कही जा सकती है।

मजा आ गया। इंजीनियरिंग के 3 ईडियट्स की तर्ज पर यहाँ तीन बीएचयू के लॉ कॉलेज के स्टूडेंट्स है। वैसे यह 3 ईडियट्स से काफ़ी अलहदा है। यूपी बिहार की भाषा की गालियां और मुहावरे इसे और ही रंगीन बना देते है।

कहानी में कुछ खास नया नही है, पर कहानी कहने का अंदाज बहुत जबरदस्त है। सटीक जगह पर गाली देना अपने आप में एक आर्ट है। दिल्ली दरबार की तरह इसमे शायरी कम है, पर वो कमी मुहावरों ने पूरी कर दी।

अपना कॉलेज याद है बे?! समझो बापस उंहें चल जाना है। अइसा-अइसा क्षण एकदम कुरेद कुरेद के निकालना है कि चवनिया मुस्कान के साथ सब हंसी-ठिठोली, गप, दारु और दोस्ती के बीच आने वाला लड़की का बुरा चक्कर, माने सब एके पल में याद करना है।
भाई क्या कहानी लिखी है! और कहानी छोड़ो, क्या तरीका है कथा बांचने का। हम फ़िदा हो गये गुरु। बहुत कम पंखा बनते हैं, लेकिन ई भाईसाहब के लिये तो सौ सलामी। धन्यवाद!

It was a fast paced, quick read for me. I finished in one day.
All the characters felt so real with their own positive and negative traits.
My favorite was Anurag De, he seemed more mature than the others and I also might be a little biased because he is bengali😅.
I really enjoyed their adventures of 3 years in BHU. Halfway through the book it felt like a heartwarming story but the author put a devastating twist with a series of events in which the major incident I know was very real.
The book made me laugh out loud so many times, made me smile warmly and also made me anxious with anticipation.
Also it was a really easy read for me because not only the story is based in my city but it is based in the area I live so I knew which places, shops the author was talking about.
This book made me feel at home❤

हिंदी साहित्य के Granddad प्रेमचंदकी गबन पढ़ने के बाद, सोचा के कुछ नए साहित्यकार की किताबें पढ़ी जाये। सलाह मिली सबसे लोकप्रिय उपन्यास - सत्य व्यास की "बनारस टाल्कीस" की। पढ़ने के बाद मन निराशा से भर गया। उदीयमान लेखक ने चेतन भगत की formula को हिंदी साहित्य में उतरने की कोशिश की है, बस। वही तीन दोस्त, वही hostel life, वही college time की बदमाशियां, वही ragging, वही थोड़ी बहुत इश्क़, और अंत में थोड़ा सा twist, कुछ नयापन देने के लिए।
'वाह! क्या किताब है? पुराना time याद आ गया' - इस किताब को पढ़ने वाले का common reaction. सायद यह वह लोग हैं, जो college से अभी अभी निकले हैं और उसको बहुत ज्यादा miss कर रहे हैं, या फिर वह लोग हैं, जो अपने कॉलेज के दोस्तों के बिलकुल की touch में नहीं हैं। नहीं तो आज कल तो सरे school और college के दोस्त whatsapp में ही मिल जाते हैं। जब चाहो message करो और उन बीते दिनों में पहुँच जाओ।

'वाह! क्या किताब है? पुराना time याद आ गया' - इस किताब को पढ़ने वाले का common reaction. सायद यह वह लोग हैं, जो college से अभी अभी निकले हैं और उसको बहुत ज्यादा miss कर रहे हैं, या फिर वह लोग हैं, जो अपने कॉलेज के दोस्तों के बिलकुल की touch में नहीं हैं। नहीं तो आज कल तो सरे school और college के दोस्त whatsapp में ही मिल जाते हैं। जब चाहो message करो और उन बीते दिनों में पहुँच जाओ।

The book revolves around Bhagwandas Hostel in Banaras occupied by Law students. Suraj, the narrator and his friends- Dada, Navenduji, Jaivardhan and Dubey Ji are the main characters of the story
If you have been a hosteller, this book would be a nostalgic read for you. The ragging, canteen runs, mess food and the likes. It almost made me feel FOMO
Story & Plot:
Coming to the plot, it was light at first but then the events got pretty serious especially with the Shivdaspura episode had me stunned, and in the end, all the dots were joined to make an ending that made sense.
Translation: Translated works tend to lose some emotions and details. Like there was a poem which must have been in hindi and would have melted hearts but when translated in this edition did not have much impact. Kudos to the translator though, many dialogues were kept in Hindi to retain their meaning and give the reader the best experience. it is due to the translated works that many gems such as this can reach larger audience.
Also, the punchlines give the book a constant humor touch. I found the book little slow at first but once second half started, I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.
If you enjoy the hostel/campus setup plots and the fun/disasters happening in everyday life of students then this book is a must read

Hindi has my heart. And with each passing "nayi wali hindi" novel I realise that my love for these novels is only increasing.
i had read 84(Chaurasi) by the author earlier which is one of the best novels i have read in Hindi, so when i picked this book my expectations with this was very high and it did not disappoint.
The story is based in BHU Benaras and on a group of friends especially three friends "Suraj" "Jaywardhan" and "Anurag" this is the story of their friendship, the hostel that becomes a family, of benaras, of a bomb blast and a close Save..
The language used is very simple and it is the language that students have.. with a touch of regional languages into Hindi...
Another special quality of the novel that i will like to mention is it's humor quotient... after almost every page there were instances that will make the reader laugh really hard probably being in hindi these instances were more impactful..
I totally loved reading this book and highly recommend it to all those who can read hindi and who want to read Hindi. All of you can blindly trust this book to be a Jolly ride and it's simple language and short length makes it a really fast read..
Also credit to all these Hindi authors... Benaras as a travel destination is definitely on my list..😀😀

The ending has changed the whole book for me. I didn't expect the way the writer taken the ending.
It has perfect humour and well balanced emotions.
I will recommend to read it in original language to connect to the book more, But the translator himadri agarwal has done his job very well.

ये किताब मुझे मेरे काॅलेज के दिनों की याद दिलाती हैं. उन दिनों की शरारतें, किस्से, कहानीयाँ सब ताजा हो गये. कुछ वक्त के लिये मैं अतित में चला गया. ये कहानी तीन दोस्तोंकी है जो बनारस में वकालत सीखने आये हैं. जिसका दुसरा मतलब ये है की अगले तीन साल वो भगवादास होस्टल में बितायेंगे. यह तीन साल लेखक ने बडे ही मनोरंजक ढंग से लिखे है. एक अरसे बाद मै किताब पढते वक्त इतना लोटपोट होकर हँसा हूँ.
अगर आप हिंदी पढ सकते है तो यह किताब जरूर पढीये.

After 84 by the same author, this felt like a downgrade but irrespective, an above average read for a regular hindi reader. I wish Satya Vyas ji comes up with a long form novel with a story that has depth and colors. His skill is evident, if only these could be converted to literature for posterity.

It's one of the finest novels. It will transport you to B.D. hostel, BHU campus, Assi ghat, pizzeria restaurant, and Banaras. The plot is nothing dramatic, but one can feel connected to it as it is a simple and very relatable tale.
I read the translated version, and I must say in that also, the charm and essence of banaras is present.

I was intrigued by the title of the book. Unfortunately, the story couldn't take it further. The only likable thing was the local vernacular slangs and some descriptions of the scenic location. Quite a passable read.

'बनारस टॉकीज' सत्य व्यास का लिखा उपन्यास है जो अपने नाम के अनुसार पाठक को अपने साथ बनारस ले जाता है! कहानी BHU के लॉ के विद्यार्थियों की है जिनमें तीन प्रमुख पात्र हैं- सूरज, अनुराग और जयवर्धन. इनके अलावा और भी कई छोटे-बड़े पात्र हैं जो कहानी में अपनी अपनी भूमिकाएं निभाते हैं.
कहानी मज़े की है, लेखनी में बनारस की भाषा, और कॉलेज के लड़के लड़कियों का अल्हड़पन बिना किसी कृत्रिमता के उकेरने का अच्छा प्रयास है. अंत सुखद है और पढ़ने में कहीं बोरियत महसूस नहीं होती है.

Rib-tickling Hilarious!
I have never ever laughed hysterically while reading a book. A powerful narration by the writer, as if all the scenes are being played in my mind. All one-liners are so relatable and the soul of the narration. Story-wise nothing is new but the narration is good. Finished in one sitting, a short and fun read.

College hostel atmosphere. Enjoyed reading this book in Hindi. The language, the proverbs, the slang was all very apt. The story line keeps you engaged throughout, and the friendship between the boys, is the highlight of the book. Incidentally, they are studying law.
