Rekindled Love: Welcome to Emancipation

Rate this book
Welcome back to Emancipation, Louisiana—where Christmas isn’t just a holiday, it’s a way of life. But this year, the lights feel dimmer, and one of the town’s most anticipated traditions just might become a memory of Christmas past…

Kyleigh Grindley wants nothing to do with Christmas or the town that watched her fall apart during the holiday season. She’s built a quiet, powerful life on the hill above town—rich, controlled, and untouchable. Emancipation may see her as “Grindley the Grinch,” but she refuses to be bullied into giving up her land and her beloved pine trees for their holiday plans… not even when the man who shattered her comes asking.

After nine years away, Jabali Christopher returns home for a looming family crisis and ends up with another problem on his hands. The mayor needs a favor, the town needs a miracle, and Jabali needs the one thing he’s been avoiding since he left—permission from the woman whose heart he broke.

Secrets and small-town loyalties collide in this urban romance inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas, as Jabali and Kyleigh find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. When feelings long denied resurface, can two wary, wounded hearts save Emancipation’s holiday spirit… or will this be the year Christmas finally loses?

I really enjoyed this story. Christmas came right on time to the hill. And a little spooky Halloween to tie it all up in a bow.
Although I'm not sure I would forgive my parents so easily, I guess if she likes it, cool for her.

Giving this a 3.5! I absolutely hatedddddddd Jabali and his fuckass family for ambushing Kyleigh like they did! Like they fr pissed me off, but she held her own. Jabali was angry, rightfully so, but him strolling up there with his family like that was crazy and wrong. I can see taking 1 person but 6? Oh nah, them mfs woulda have to leave. Pick one to stay if you feel the need. Then for him to go back the next day making demands? I woulda told him to kick rocks and kiss my ass. But I liked seeing his relationship with Zizi grow! She loved him. I wanted Kyleigh to be like fuck that town and never let them light her trees😂 but Jabali reignited her love for Christmas so I guess it was okay in the end lmao. I did like how he wasnt playing about her, especially with Deon ass (hellllllll is hot, ain't no water there!!!!). Ky's parents were deadass wrong and I'm glad she and Jabali were able to figure out what really happened and move forward. It ended on a cute note!

A cute holiday read! Definitely Grinch-esque feel and navigation of Christmas time. The last few pages (literally) took a drastic and unnecessary turn tonally and this story didn’t have a lot connecting this to the overarching series (the location and a couple of background characters who were background characters in previous entries which aren’t spoilers), but otherwise this was a nice story to get me in the holiday spirit 💚

DNF Review — Rekindled Love: Welcome to Emancipation

I told myself a long time ago that life is too short to force my way through books I don’t like - especially when it’s not for school. Reading is supposed to be comfort and self-care, not an endurance test. So at page 112, I had to be real with myself and say: Kaala, you don’t have to read this. Nobody’s giving out awards. Nobody’s checking my Goodreads for completion points. Peace > page count.

***Let me be clear first: this book is not bad. The writing isn’t the issue, and the author is not problem at all. This is very much a TROPE issue for me.***

From the jump, the author’s note rubbed me the wrong way. The warnings about the FMC, Ky, her boundaries, and the preemptive “if you already have women-hating syndrome…” disclaimer immediately set a tone that made me think, Oh, so she’s going to be written as intentionally abrasive. I still gave her a chance because listen … I’m bitchy, and people don’t always give me grace either. Fair is fair.

But the moment Ky reveals she has a child by her high-school ex, Jabali, and he has no idea the child exists? Immediate turn-off. I hate this trope. Unless there is physical danger involved, I do not believe in keeping a child from their parent. That’s a hard line for me. Feelings aside, a child deserves access to both parents, and no one person should get to make a unilateral decision that impacts two other lives that deeply. That was strike two.

Strike three (and if you know baseball, that’s a wrap) was Jabali finding out about his child and then being immediately surrounded by people, one family member and one long-lost friend, basically telling him she’s the victim, tread lightly. One of them even throws out the “well, don’t forget you ran away” line, conveniently glossing over the fact that Ky blocked him everywhere and disappeared, leaving him zero access or explanation after the whole Christmas play humiliation. That level of narrative imbalance irritated me beyond recovery.

So yeah - long story short: it’s not the writing, and it’s not the author. From what I read, it’s well done. But the trope already had me irritated, and I’m not about to push through 200+ pages of something that doesn’t align with my values just to say I finished.

This one is a DNF for me, and I’m at peace with that.

secrets always come to light, you can’t stop true love.

the towns people were not only rude but they were arrogant thinking they had a right to have a tree ceremony on her land because her grandmother allowed it in the past. like it’s her property and that doesn’t ruin or stop christmas and i’m glad the mayor finally admitted that. but i do commend kyleigh for allowing the ceremony to happen for her daughter because kids deserve a beautiful christmas.

i don’t like how jabali family rolled with him and acted all in kyleighs place when he went to confront her about aziza being his, but i did like seeing them come to an agreement without going through the court process. auntie was out of lie for not heeding the warning they gave her in the store and telling aziza that jabali was her dad before they got the chance to tell her but she handled it so well.

jabali never about kyleigh he was always overprotective of her and 10 years apart didn’t change that. those years apart didn’t stop him from loving her either. jabali and kyleigh were home for each other and they deserved their happy ending because everyone was dead wrong for interfering and causing that rift between them. kyleigh parents deserve to get their ass best for keeping aziza away from jabali and making her feel like he didn’t want her when in actuality he didn’t know about her like that scene hurt my heart. in the end deon got what he deserved for hurting kyleigh, continuing to talk to bad about her

They tried Ok Frens, I is backk! I think you might like this book – "Rekindled Love: Welcome to Emancipation" by elle kayson.

The Grindley who stole Christmas for the win! I don't think i've ever read a "Grinch" retelling, and this gave everything it had to give.
Strong MMC ✔️
Hidden baby✔️
2nd Chance ❤️‍🩹✔️
❤️ Heart ✔️

They tried to give that lady hell on what to do with her own property! The audacity! If you ask me, she was more a victim standing up for herself than a villain, but for the sake of the story, I digress. Cause they just weren't going to bully their way up on my property.

🤭 Hidden baby- when they confronted her about her daughter, and she told them folks, "Bring it because my lawyers stay down!" Fist to mouth, all I heard was Outcast, lol! She wasn't playing with them!!!

“I have lawyers on retainer who bill more in an hour than your mortgage."

The ending derailed me a bit but all in all, I really enjoyed this and recommend it to anyone looking for I feel good holiday read.
❄️Be prepared to spontaneously want to sing Christmas carols.

Note: These are interconnected standalones. You can read one and not be lost if you don’t read the others".

I can't wait to see what else is going in Emancipation, LA! And it sounds like Mr Benton got a story of his own to tell!

Meh…nothing warm and fuzzy here.

I usually love Elle’s writing but this was just meh. It didn’t have soul like her stuff usually does. There was no dimension to the story. I pushed through hoping it would get better.

Kyleigh was never redeemed in my mind. It was bad enough what she did to that man (no excuse) but even the way she treated her daughter made her unlikable. Also I hate these stories when the woman is awful, the man has made a minor mistake and everyone in the book is on his ass and no one ever holds her accountable. She never really thawed, she never did anything nice for anyone out of the kindness of her heart. Jabali was a good dude, he deserved better. He made a mistake as a kid…whoopty do. Who doesn’t. Even with the role her parents played at some point you’re an adult and you should have made better decisions.

There were a few phrases that felt recycled from her last book too. Things feeling like armor, there were a few more.

Unfortunately not a fan of this one.

From Grinch to Grace

"Rekindled Love: Welcome to Emancipation" is an emotional, beautifully written story about rediscovering love while reclaiming yourself. Elle Kayson does a solid job delivering depth, healing, and passion, and the emotional journey toward freedom, both romantically and personally, is genuinely satisfying. The characters feel real, and the connection between them carries the heart of the story.

It also works well as a seasonal read. There’s a cute, Grinch-esque holiday vibe that captures the tension and tenderness that can come with navigating love during Christmas. That said, the final few pages take a pretty abrupt tonal turn that felt unnecessary, and the connection to the broader series is fairly light, mostly limited to the setting and a few background characters.

Overall, it’s a heartfelt, enjoyable read that lingers emotionally, even if the ending shift kept it from being a full five stars for me. Definitely worth the read if you enjoy stories about healing, second chances, and love finding its way back home.

Our version of the Grinch 🥰

Aziza brought Jabali and Ky back together. Her parents were so wrong. Just manipulative. Had her h@ting Christmas and her true love. Even edited tapes to have her believe their lies. Just sad. I’m hoping she cut them off. Glad Aunt Ola Kate called Jabali to come back into town to try and get the trees lit up. She rekindled their long lost love. It’s terrible he missed out on almost 10 years of his baby girls life. She is more than loved. I was hoping for them to have a lil man in this story lol. Good read!

Whew! I enjoyed this one. A Grinch retelling with a dog named Max and a hidden baby? Loved it!

Miscommunication as teenagers caused a drift in their original relationship, but a second chance during the holiday season was exactly what they needed.

I loved the storyline and all of the secondary characters from the children to the elder family members. Everyone added something special, and it really made the story shine.

Go on and read this one. A cute, heartwarming romance about second chances. Elle writes no wrong ! I'm a big fam of the Emancipation series !

Rekindled Love by Elle Kayson is a Christmas romance with depth. This isn’t about hating the holidays, its about healing from what they took from you. Ky is a grumpy FMC done right; her pain felt real and earned. And Jabali? Baby wanted to fight everybody who had something negative to say about my girl Ky. I was like sir… are you about to be tussling with the whole town? 😭 The second chance romance hit, the secret baby added emotional weight without being messy, and the redemption arc was worth the wait. If you want holiday romance that actually makes you feel something, this one is it.

loved this Grinch retelling

Kyleigh & Jabali really are a match made in heaven. Kyleigh may be a “villain” but Jabali’s the one that’s gonna cancel Christmas on your ass, ESPECIALLY over Kyleigh & ZiZi.

This was a heartwarming, Christmas romance. Definitely enjoyed reading it during the holiday season. My only gripe is that the characters seemed to be allergic to contractions…ie “you fine. you not gon lose her. you not.” wasn’t sure if that was a dialect choice or what, but it became annoying to read.

Rekindled Love: Welcome to Emancipation

This was a Very Very Good Read. This book has great characters and a touching love story. You will read about lies, deception, corruption and bullying in this book. We will also find redemption and justice in this story. Karma introduces herself in the storyline. I am truly grateful for the writers penmanship because Elle Kayson is awesome 👏🏾!!!

3.5 ⭐️s

This was a cute spin on the retelling of How the Grinch stole Christmas by incorporating a second chance romance trope. The story started off strong for me and had my attention, initially. However, I didn’t care for the way the book ended. I was very confused by the last few pages of the story and why the main male character took the action he did at the end.

It was an OK read, overall. It didn’t pull any emotions out of me or make me feel any connection to the characters.

A Perfect Holiday Read

5/5 ⭐️
Elle did it again, for real.
I loved everything about this book , the characters, the emotion, the pacing, all of it just worked.
It gave all the holiday feels with that Grinch-type energy mixed in, and I was locked in from the beginning.
Definitely one of those reads that puts you in the holiday spirit. I can’t wait to see what she drops next.

Ate this one up!!!!!!

So good!!!!

It’s amazing how love can last over years even with hurt still lingering. Jabali and Kyleigh were just teens. So many people played a part in their relationship ending. But ten years later, their love still there. Can they make it work??

A grinch Re-telling with the FMC being the grinch-like persona?!?! Absolutely. I ate this book up! Festive, well-written, chemistry, second chance romance….give me all of those things🤭❤️‍🔥 Jabali’s character was impressive in this short read. Giving don’t play with me vibes to Kyleigh and to anybody that has something bad to say about her🥴🫠 Yep yep yep!!!

Everybody was manipulative and insufferable. This lady was bullied as a child and then this man came back and bullied her some more. I’m have to take a break from this author every male character is toxic and never respects the boundaries of the female characters and its written like they’re doing what’s best for the female character. Doesn’t seem the women have autonomy for real.

I like Elle Kayson’s work but struggle with the unfinished portions. This was a good read but still left some questions unanswered about Jabali and Kyleigh’s story (what really happened to cause break, how did she handle parents, etc.). If all the loops were closed this would be a 5 star read for me.

This was a good read. Glad they could work through their problems without pettiness and regrettable actions. Glad Aziza will grow up with even more love shown to her. I liked this book more than the other two in the series.

The following are all the thoughts I had while reading this book so it may contains some spoilers:

Okay Ms Grinch

I loved this modern retelling of The Grinch. Kyleigh really tried to steal Christmas from the town, but watching her heart slowly thaw and heal was satisfying. I also loved how Jabali stayed protective, even through his own hurt. A good holiday read.

Whew, Kyleigh knew she was irking my nerves but as the truth unraveled it goes to show parents can be our biggest haters. I hate her & Jay lost so much time from the hands of others but they were able to pick up after much adult communication and all it took was the holiday spirit.
