"When I first read the brief description on the book’s cover, I thought I was holding just another romance novel, but, as they say, never judge a book by its cover.
This is far from a clichéd love story. It is a ballad not only about the pure feelings between a woman and a man, but also about true friendship. As you read, you will encounter two exceptionally loyal characters who, for me, embody the very essence of genuine friendship.
This is a novel that brings together real historical events with the everyday lives and emotions of people: their joy, pain, hope, and disappointment. Within its pages, you will find family relationships, generational differences and conflicts, characters marked by human flaws, as well as those who stand as exemplary and dignified figures for any era.
Each episode, each event, is permeated with a sense of inevitability. As a reader, I journeyed alongside the characters, shared in their emotions, felt the pain of parting from certain heroes, and was struck by unexpected turns in the plot. Yet it is precisely this richness that leads to a deeply natural conclusion —where the soul finds the soul, the past meets the present, and a person finds another person once lost decades ago and preserved forever in memory.
The plot develops in a completely unexpected way. Just when you think the author has exhausted all surprises and the ending seems predictable — no, even there you encounter new twists. It leaves me with the impression that a continuation of the book may be on the horizon.
For me, 'Oleanders' is not an ordinary novel. First of all, because, as I mentioned, it is rich with diverse storylines that never allow the reader to relax. And also because I have known the author since childhood, and I can confidently say that through this book, I discovered her anew — as a person of remarkable depth, individuality, and thought.
It is also impossible not to mention that the novel is written in an old, literary form of English, which gives it a distinctive charm and sets it apart from contemporary works.
