Shay Roberts, a USA Today bestselling fantasy/sci-fi author, has a reputation for writing page-turning novels with captivating characters.

Shay began writing as a child, scribbling stories on the walls of the family home. In ink. As you can imagine, they were poorly received. But when the young author moved to pencil and paper, a career was born.

The medieval world is a frequent setting for the writer’s works. Passionate about Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), Shay founded the Academy of Arms, a nonprofit medieval martial arts school in Los Angeles. As an instructor, the author developed expertise in various dueling weapons, including the longsword and pollaxe, and later discovered these skills are counterproductive in office situations.

Shay is also an instrument-rated pilot with a diverse educational background, including an MA in Screenwriting, a BS in Biology, and a BA in English. This is another way of saying Shay never wanted to leave college and join the “real world.”

When not slaving over a new novel, the author plays open-world RPGs and explores the latest tech gadgets. Shay enjoys a healthy lifestyle that includes cooking, working out, fermenting vegetables, and brewing kombucha. The writer’s cherry-ginger kombucha has been particularly well-received.

The author finds Pomskies and Russian Blues to be the most adorable of all creatures and will duel anyone who says otherwise. As an animal lover, there is always a place in Shay’s books for another furry friend.

Currently, the author spends much of the year in Portugal, embracing the culture and learning the language. É muito difícil! With its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and friendly people, Portugal is the perfect place for writing spellbinding novels. Be advised, if you ever want to visit this lovely country, you are required to love futebol and swear allegiance to Ronaldo.

I like the idea of a female engineer tech raider. I'm down for her going on adventures with the raider team to recover useful equipment in a dangerous environment. However, I wasn't comfortable with Jade's objectification and the weird random striptease she does in front of a bunch of guys for no reason. The escape scene was far too easy. No-one wondered why all of these people who just got banned from leaving the enclave, are all just casually walking together in the same direction towards the exit in broad daylight? It was silly that there were random attack-bots that try to kill you if you wore a certain colour, and that the elite raider team wore those same colours anyway knowing that they might get attacked. Jade having special powers seemed to come out of nowhere, but I'm sure this will be fleshed out throughout the series.

The whole storyline was a bit disjointed and often seemed to take two steps forward, two steps back.

May-17 edit. Just finished the 4th book, Mutation. If you do read "Tech raider and aren't overly impressed, I urge you to continue with the next books. The overall experience, for me, improved dramatically.

I’ve been reading SiFi for over 70 years. Thanks to the digital age, I’ve been fortunate to be an ARC reviewer for a number of new authors. Most were adequate, some not so, and a few very good ones.

Shay Roberts is a very good one in what I’d consider a “light adventure” style. Not hard science with an abundance of pseudo-technical jargon. Just “this is what the gadget is called and what it does”. Thus the “light” term.

As an ARC I feel I should try to finish the book provided and give an honest review. When I first started reading “Tech Raider”, I almost decided to not continue reading. It would have been one of the very few times I’d done so. I stopped reading several times and intended to inform Shay I couldn’t finish.

Not that the writing was bad , it wasn’t. But I felt the style was geared more for the “Young Adult” reader. I’m glad “ I endeavored to persevere” (Easter Egg). The plot became more sophisticated and engrossing. The action plausible without being over the top and the character development expanded. It took less than 2 days to finish the 80% remaining.

Of special note is the appendix. It should be read before the book itself. One of best I’ve seen.

I can highly recommend Tech Raider.

We meet Jade when she was 2. She is almost taken to be sold but saved by her friend. Eighteen years later she's one of the best mechanics in her area.
The world had gone crazy years before she was born and things went almost primitive. One night while trying to fix her robot dog she sees a ship crash. No one believes her so she speaks to her best friend and a Dr who specializes in tech. They make a plan to escape their area. The escape is hard and blocked by supposed friends. But they make it. They want the truck in the down so but it's dangerous.
Will they find it and survive?
I usually don't read stories like this but I was riveted and got very invested in Jade and her friends and their stubbornness.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
