Chris lives in a run-down apartment complex, working steadily and saving what he can to escape it. When one of his neighbors is found dead in the building, the unease that follows feels temporary. That same night, a small voice rises from the vent beneath his bed. Tiny. Pleading. Unchanging.
"Hello...? Please help me, I'm stuck down here."
The voice returns night after night, rolling up through the slit of his wall from deep below. What begins as an unsettling voice soon escalates, eroding his sleep, sanity, and sense of self. Steadily, Chris's world contracts, narrowing around a single the vent, and what could be lurking inside.
The Vent is a claustrophobic horror novella exploring obsession, parasitic intimacy, bodily autonomy, and the terror of being hollowed out from the inside.
The Vent is excellent! Easily one of the most unsettling new horror stories I’ve read in a while. The concept of a voice coming from the vent is simple, but the execution is truly amazing. It isn’t just creepy, it feels invasive and personal.
What makes the story stand out is how the voice is used as both a plot device and a psychological weapon consistently. It isn’t just a gimmick, it’s a presence. The tension builds through suggestion, manipulation, and the gradual erosion of sanity. The obsession angle is especially terrifying! The horror doesn’t rely solely on shock value, it grows from paranoia, isolation, and the possibility that the voice might know Chris better than he knows himself.
The atmosphere is claustrophobic and surreal, turning an ordinary household fixture into something sinister. Every scene is purposeful, pushing Chris closer to his breaking point until the final moments land with devastating weight. The physical horror is sharp, grotesque, and intense, but it’s the psychological descent that lingers long after the story ends.
The Vent is disturbing in the best ways, it’s bold, relentless, and hauntingly original. I’m so happy to start my year off with this fantastic story. Five stars without hesitation.
As someone who's extremely claustrophobic that was enough for this book to terrify me! LOL
Super well-crafted, classic horror novella with just the level of character building, detail and scare that you'd hope for. That's something that isn't always easy with horror novellas, often being short form and feeling rushed, but The Vent somehow manages to do the complete opposite of that. I just want more already!
This was a roller coaster ride that stayed with me long after reading it. Long after. It was a layered story with twists and turns you don't see coming (or think you do) until the end. Rich in detail, rich in characters that are believable, terrifying, and really make your skin crawl. I will never look at the vents in my place the same way again. Ever.
Absolutely spine chilling! The Vent was a dreadful and downright eerie story. The voice calling up from the vent below Chris’s bed was terrifying enough, but the descriptions of the claustrophobic environments and the explosive ending took me out. Amazing work!
