This isn't your typical dystopian, because Claire Connelly is not your typical girl. She's smart, compassionate, and ... weak. But that very weakness, she's told, is her biggest strength.
Along with hundreds of other twins, Claire and Audrey are sent away to an experiment where strange things happen. The television talks to them and she has a name. The little box in the corner glows when it's time for a daily blood draw. And memories blur and disappear, distorting reality more and more each day.
As Claire struggles to discover the purpose of the experiments, she loses pieces of herself and just as she feels an urge to fight back ... she's left with a choice that will define her future in ways she doesn't want to be defined. In ways that will ruin her and everything she is.
There's no way out for Claire Connelly, but she's determined to find one.
You've Been Warned! This dystopian novella is the first part of a two book psychological ride and DOES include a cliffhanger.

The author contacted me and I received a copy of the book in exchange of a honest review.
CLOSURES & CLIFFHANGERS
Love is a strong word... ...you should be careful who you give it to.
This story has great potential and I have no doubt that the sequel will be quite interesting, but I’d like to have a choice of reading it or not. I mean, since this “first” book isn’t explained anything, there isn’t any closure, and even what you can a climax is the mother of all cliffhangers where it’s like forcing you to read the next book.
I am pretty sure that it wasn't the intention of Marilyn Grey, the author, so I am just expressing the feeling that left me after the reading of this first part.
I think authors must be really careful with cliffhangers. In a movie can work, only if there was some satisfactory closure on it. Even a TV episode can have the luxury of not explaining much and “ending” in an impacting cliffhanger if the second part will be shown the following week. As a tool to make the network to authorize a next season is a lottery since not matter cliffhanger or not, if current season’s rating were bad, the network won’t do a next season and the audience paid it not knowing how the story would end.
In a book, I think it should be managed like a movie, in the sense, that while you don’t have to explain everything, you should explain something, some stuff here and there, and definitely, giving a sense of closure to the current story, so even having a cliffhanger, you won’t feel like you have not other choice than getting the next book.
CLOWN’S LOLLIPOPS & LIFE RINGS
Every pain and joy that meant something to me.
While my reading experience with Young Adult series is limited, I starting to feel that many of them have an “ecological philosophy”, since they just recycle an established formula. It’s like if they took Ender’s Game, Harry Potter series and a cliché romantic angle (even better is it’s a triangle), and you have: a lead character (usually a female, but there are enough male ones too) who is chosen or forced recruited to some strange institution or teaching system (usually managed by a dystopian goverment), where they get some close friends (between one or two) and a romantic interest (which usually is in an upper level in the institution or even can be an instructor), and after having to do several dangerous life-risking tests, they realized that the system is evil and it must be beaten.
This one isn’t different.
In positive notes: This book is extremely well written with an elegant prose and finding many memorable phrases. The characters are interesting. And the general setting while it’s well under the range of your typical Young Adult story, what little you can get, it looks promising.
REFLEXIONS & TRASFORMATIONS
Conversations should be like a game of tennis.
Honestly, I am not sure how wise was to split this story in two books: Hold and Hide, since as I commented above, you really don’t find out any of the mysteries in the situation ( I wasn’t expecting a full exposition, but at least to begin to understand what’s really going on), and adding the fact of not having some climax, some kind of big action-packed final scene in the book, finding “the mother of all cliffhangers” as the final lines in this “first part”, is really disappointing.
I can understand that the "mood" on each part will be quite different, but still I think that publishing one single book, with clear separate "parts", "sections", whatever, to denote a strong change in how the character is reacting to the story could be a better option to fully enjoy the whole story in one single shot.
I can understand that publishing this short book, it can provoke uncertain reader to give it a shot, but giving them later a “forced required reading” of the second book, if they want to know the solution of the cliffhanger and also to understand what’s really about the story is like a unfair strategy to the readers.
However, as I commented too, the book is extremely well written, with an elegant and smart style, wonderful and inspiring phrases, etc..., so my best recommendation is that if you want to read this story (and so far, I think it will evolve into something really good), the best way is getting both books at the same time (honestly expecting that one will get a closure in the second book), so in that way, you will receive the whole reading experience at once, and I am sure that your overall opinion about the story will be highly positive.
The year is 2051. Identical twins. But how can they be identical when one is always better at everything, more loved than the other? The testing of twins, almost a thousand of them. The rumor is only one from each set will return home. Butterfly stickers, axes, and mirrors. Drones no larger than the end of your pinkie finger keep tabs on everything. An exchange of mind and body.
Love the concept, no quarrel with the writing, but I didn't end up connecting with the story. Ends with a major cliffhanger, which I understood going in. My best bud from work loaned his copy to me, I meant to like it a little better than I did. These things happen.
“Each time the door beeps the speaker next to your bed will provide directions. Meal times are not always consistent, so please do not expect a pattern. Listen to all directions closely.”
This was a very strange book.
I did like Claire as a character, and I felt really sorry for her in the way she was treated like dirt whilst her parents worshipped her twin sister. I can’t be sure that that behaviour wasn’t how they’d been ordered to behave though?? Anyway, I did feel sorry for Claire, and all the other teens forced into this crazy testing business. Really not very nice!
“Yesterday we had to stay calm in a box filled with spiders and, well, that one freaked me out a little.”
The storyline seemed straight-forward enough, until the experiments started that is. Once the experiments started it was very hard to know what was real and what wasn’t, and why the heck these people were doing what they were doing. Some of these ‘tests’ weren’t very nice either, and being forced to kill an animal, or even kill a person, was very strange.
“Each one of us needed to kill an animal with no weapons, then skin it without any knives. He told us we could pick the animal, as though it were some kind of privilege to do so.”
There was a little bit of romance in this, but not a lot. I liked that Claire had Blake though, and I think even the idea of him grounded her a bit.
“I listened to his orders, but walked as slow as possible, turning back every few seconds to see Blake.”
The ending to this was, as warned, a huge cliff-hanger. Looks like we’ll be waiting until June to find out what happens next!
“She had my heart, right there in the centre of her chest where I aimed my gun.”

Claire was an okay character, and I felt really sorry for her, as her parents treated her completely different to the way they treated her sister, and it really wasn't fair.
This was an okay read, but I felt like it went downhill. The first 40% or so was weird, yet interesting. After that, it was just weird. It was also very confusing, and at times, I hadn't got a clue what was going on.
The ending to this was a huge cliffhanger, and it defiantly got my interest back. I'll have to read the second book when it's out now to find out what happens.
"My sister would do better than me. She always did. She looked better, lived better, overall had this magnetic draw to her that made her irresistible and unapproachable all at the same time. Sometimes I even forgot we were identical twins."
W-O-W...!! I can't recommend this book enough!! It's just AWESOME!
Being yet another YA dystopian one could argue that Hold can't be entirely original, and it isn't, not 100%, but if you enjoy great stories you will probably not be wanting for 100% originality anyhow. I know, I wouldn't.. I would much rather want for an amazing story with compelling delivery.. And this one delivers..!! The setting isn't just your average heroine talking on a controlling system, neither is it that of a great romance. It is however, an AMAZING first half of a story, I doubt will disappoint.. Actually, I only read a few pages before knowing, I was hooked.
Obviously I recommend Hold to anyone! There are hundreds of twins in the story, and yet, It isn't necessarily for fans of The Boys from Brazil, though it might be. I like that one too.. It is definitely highly recommendable to readers of Divergent, The Hunger Games and other great dystopians.. Though not exactly a typical dystopian, it definitely is a perfectly dystopian take on a society I wouldn't want to be a part of. You don't have to be into dystopians though, I would also recommend this to anyone who enjoy touching, discomforting and suspenseful books. Hold has the same compelling feel to it as eg. Beautiful Malice. It also reminds me a bit of Stranger with My Face, though not for any obvious reasons..
I began reading Hold practically on top of finishing Divergent, and while I enjoyed Divergent, I actually enjoyed Hold better.. It's my first ever read by Marilyn Grey, and judgeing by this book that is an obvious mistake, though it might in part be because I mostly avoid romances, and she does seem to have written lot of those..
In my opinion Claire, the protagonist, is a very very likeable and well-developed character.. Apparently she is the lesser twin, in her family. The parents adore Claire's sister, Audrey, to an extent that Claire could be written of as either undesired or as a Cinderella doppelgänger. Being an identical twin the latter comparison doesn't hold up, though, and neither would an Ugly-Duckling label. They might be two sides of a coin, but the coin is a coin nonetheless. Or so it would seem.. Anyways, Audrey, is the pretty, popular one, where as Clair is the one who wonders, reflects, imagines and questions.. In ways Claire is the side of the coin others rarely gets to see.. She is human and imperfect, she doesn't strieve at everything, yet she is strong and kindhearted.. She is obviously pretty, being that great looks is one of her sisters virtues.. I love the fact that the protagonist isn't presented as this stunning, perfect heroine, but as a complex and interesting girl, with relatable issues. I also like the implied-ness in the twins' relationship. And I especially enjoyed Claire's narrative voice.. Consistent, interesting.. Snarky on occasion.
The cover is beautiful, love the colours. I also love the fact that there is no actual romance, no MC doubting her looks, her ability to kiss or whatever.. I especially enjoyed the assignment with all the mirrors.. Beautifully imagined.. Heartbreaking almost... And so important on several levels.. Wont spoil anything by elaborating though. The writing is stunning and imaginative, and as for the world-building, It's very solid and very creepy. Big Brother is a massive presence, providing a great deal of discomfort in this story. There are moments of cruelness.. To humans, to animals, to readers having to endure the torment of the characters, and yet this is part of what makes the story so touching..
While I did remember to think, and to appreciate the issues this story raises, I completely forgot to stop and do other stuff.. I rarely read books in just two sittings, but hadn't I been extremely tired, I wouldn't have stopped reading this at all. The premise raises a lot of questions, and I will definitely not forget about this book any time soon.
Now, I should be able to find something I would want to be different, but really.. Nothing important springs to mind. I have nothing at all to complain about, save maybe the length - I wouldn't have minded reading more - and the having to wait for the conclusion.. Obviously both are only because the book is so great!! And typos.. They are few, rare and almost non-existent.
I have a thing about highlighting all the parts I find worth remembering while reading.. After reading this my copy is now rainbow coloured.. Colouring everything up kinda defy the point of highlights, but it not like I can jus break a habit because the story is stunning.. Basically there is just SO MUCH to like.. Very well done!
Would I watch the movie? I would definitely watch the movie.. Please, make this into a movie... It has got so much potential!!!
Such an epic book hangover right now! I finished this last night and I was blown away (and missing a few fingernails I might add) this has got to be one of my favorite dystopian novels and I have read quite a few, the tension is palpable in so many scenes that it is a roller coaster of a read, it is psychologically thrilling and will make you consider important questions all while trying to figure out what is really going on in this "experiment"
The book starts off with excellent character development and you become invested in these characters rather quickly, Claire is my favorite dystopian heroine she is strong both physically but mentally as well ( most books seem to have a heroine that is either one or the other, but Claire is a excellent mix of both) yes, I said it i like her better than Katniss! I'll shout it from the rooftops and let the comments begin on this review of people telling me I'm crazy, but I dare you to read Hold and not be in awe of this character.
I love all of Marilyn's romance novels and series but this is a game changer and I believe that she has created a intense , keeps you on the edge of your seat book. It just goes to show her talent as a writer knows no bounds! There is just hints of romance in this one and the always come at a time when the action is building and you could use a little distraction. The very descriptive writing style you experience in The Unspoken Series is present and accounted for in this book and I find that it's one of the things that set it apart from some of the other dystopian novels out there, it feels like we are right there with the characters and can feel our hearts race like we are the ones being chased! I apparently kept wiggling my feet while reading (thanks to my boyfriend for point out with wierd quirk) it was that intense and I was so into the story that I had no idea I was doing it.
Now that we have gotten to the end of my long winded review I'm just going to tell you this, What are you waiting for! Get this book now!!! You will not regret it, if you are new to Marilyn's work this is a excellent place to start and I think she will find a whole new readership with this book. It's on the top of my "you gotta read this" recommendation list! I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here.
Hold is a brilliantly exciting novella that gets you hooked on a dystopian read, even if that's not normally your cup of tea! This book is totally out of left field from what Marilyn normally writes, and many may think that's a negative, but give it a shot and I trust you'll love it. Claire is an unloved, timid girl who feels more comfortable hidden in her own head, than she does out with her sister and twin Audrey who is the total opposite. Audrey's family adores her, gives her anything she so desires and treats her as a princess. Neither of the sisters are friends, and Audrey like to take hold of all situations and turn them so she looks the best way she can. Claire would be totally on her own if it wasn't for her best friend Blake. He has been a saving grace in Claire's life for as long as she can remember, but will she be able to remember for long?
I wasn't sure I would enjoy this genre... boy was I wrong...This book was amazing!! I bought this afternoon an read it all in one sitting....Marilyn Grey really did a great job on this book. I cant wait to see what happens next with Clair an the rest. I also really liked the way this was a story about a strong young woman an no love triangle going on. She kept it real. If your looking for a book that will grab you so hard you can not put it down even if you've never read the dystopian genre......this book is what your looking for.
Something completely different from what I usually read, however extremely gripping (I read it all in one afternoon)
Hundreds of twins sent away for an "experiment" that had been their destiny from birth... Claire just wants to get out without losing herself in the process!
Now I just need to know what happens... Massive cliff hanger!
Read most of this, then skimmed last 30ish pages. The story started with potential, but soon devolved into "let's see what freakish torture I can describe today." Characters were underdeveloped, and the ending read much like a middle school cliffhanger.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a really, really strange read. I usually get too disturbed by this kind of books to keep on reading, but this one just kind of put me in a trance.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD SO BEWARE.
First of all, I'm usually not for bitter characters but I loved Claire. I love that her weakness strengthens her, it felt really unique since with all dystopian novels nowadays heroines are extremely strong and independent that at some point they stop being relatable. It wasn't like that for Claire. She had many break-down moments and made wrong un-smart decisions at times, but that's what great about her, that she's human. There's also the mystery. I usually get frustrated by the mystery and feel like it's dragging too long but here it does something to serve the story and makes you actually feel how Claire is going out of her mind. I felt really bad for her, like worse than any other character I've ever read about. Her parents treated her so badly. There's only one issue and that's that at some points the book was a bit confusing, as in when talking about Brayden and Blake switching bodies and Claire and Audrey, or when Claire saw her younger self in the mirror and talked about her father bringing a boy into her room. Like, I understood that, but there was always this suspicion in my mind that I analyzed it wrong. So, to conclude, this was a very captivating and special read. I can't wait to read Hide. I finished Hold in one day and was sad when I finished it because I wanted more so badly. As soon as Hide comes out, I'm going to swallow that up.
This book, i just. wow. it's so twisted and captivating i don't even know where to begin! I wasn't sure when it said it was dystopian, as i'm not too keen on genre specific books, but am tired of the same old romance stories that i had to give this one a try! I am so glad that i did, and i am left with a hangover from this book not knowing what to think! what is going on? what is this "experiment" really for? what is their ultimate goal? what is Claire's choice going to be?
During the scene where she had to choose a reflection/memory, i found myself wondering how would she choose? how could she? did she even think about how her choice would effect her? she did, but only when it was too late. I couldn't imagine trying to choose something like that much less at the ending of the book!
Claire starts out a normal girl, but being a twin is not the experience she wanted for herself upon being sent away for some special twin experiment. She's obviously not close with her sister who is their parents favorite and all she wants is to be treated nicely it seems. It seems like she's got one best friend, and there were a few sketchy details there with their past and that came to light towards the end. sometimes that drives me crazy, as i like to know what happened to make someone the way they are, but i still enjoyed the book.
I'm so stinking excited for book 2, i HAVE to have it and find out what happened!!!
Whoa baby!! Can I just say that was totally unexpected. I honestly had no idea what I expected, or what I was even getting myself into by reading this book. I read a variety but nothing comes close to this story. Gut wrenching, twist and turns that leave you breathless and gasping for air.
I felt like I was watching an episode of the twilight zone trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Was this really happening, was it a dream, an alternative reality, a fragment of time, or a slow drawn out painful process to conform them to their will.
Then finally reaching the end was like, oh no. How could you ever choose, to be put in such a situation where as you have no idea what your choice may really do not just to others, but yourself as well.
I kept reading until the end, not wanting to put it down, hoping I'd get more pages. What a creative journey this has been it draws you in and keeps you riveted to your book afraid to look away in case you miss anything. So glad that "Hide" will be out soon enough to find my answers. Luckily I'll get some Marilyn Grey in the form of "The Best of Fools" thank goodness. I'll be going through book withdrawals. Loved it and can't wait for more!! : )
I've known many sets of twins in my life, some identical and some fraternal. As I read this book, I wondered how they would react to some of the scenarios in this story. Some I have a pretty good idea how the things in the book would affect them, and some I am clearly not able to picture.
Hold happens in the not so distant future, most of the conveniences and technologies we rely on now, are things of the past. The story begins with Claire and her twin Audrey preparing for the trip to their "destiny...the twin tests". Hold is a Dystopian type novel. You follow Claire as she experiences and goes through the tests and assignments. To be honest, I am not sure I could live during this time. Claire is strong, she defends herself and those she cares about to the point of losing pieces of herself while she is doing it. How can you go into a test as one person, and emerge less sure of who you are?
I started this book earlier today, and I couldn't put it down. I was drawn in very quickly. I felt for Claire from page one. I can't wait for Hide, book 2 in the series. There is a HUGE cliffhanger in this book, but it is so worth it.
This was an OK novella and I really do not have that much to complain about. It's simply written, it probably addresses young readers and it deals with the same old topic of kids living in a dystopian environment, where they have to learn to survive. Of all the details, I probably appreciated the mind games the most. I recommend the 1st part of Hold to anyone that would like a quick and easy read that somewhat resembles The Hunger Games. In this respect, I can even say that Marilyn Grey does a great job at describing the characters and the plot, compared to Suzanne Collins (who is incapable of doing so, in my opinion).
So why the 3-star rating, then? It's a purely subjective matter, as it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. There was a series of romantic references that I thought were seriously fatiguing and boring at the same time, and some of the characters' evolution confused me. Some elements are definitely worthy of a more thorough description. One other thing I didn't like was the ending, which is probably the main reason I won't be reading the rest of the series. I totally dislike books that end this way.
3.5 stars. Like other dystopians, this book has many of the same characteristics: it takes place in the future, there is a test or challenge of some sort, and an authoritative entity is doing what they dub is "for the greater good", "for the citizens' best interest", etc. While some stories are really out there with no comparison to today's geographical location or technology, this one has some relatable traits. The story is set in 2051, doesn't seem to be terribly off the charts (the people have food, shelter, etc.), and while things like smart phones and free-will television tuning are a thing of the past, they aren't unheard of. There is knowledge of the past through photos and the memories of the older citizens. I don't want to spoil the story itself, but I will say it was interesting and intriguing and I'm left with a ton of questions. Some weird things happen, and I'm not sure if it's real or just a mind control situation. I'm excited for Hide (book 2) to see where the story goes. I'm also happy that this is a duology and not a long drawn out series.
This is the first book I have read by Marilyn Grey and I will definitely be reading more! "Hold" was such an amazing read, it was refreshingly different then your typical dystopian books. There was so much going on and it was intense, especially towards the end. So many questions left unanswered so I cannot wait until book 2 "Hide" to be released, I am anxious to see what's in store. What choice will Claire make? Will it be her best friend Blake? Will it be her sister Audrey? Will she even have to make this choice? Will she ever get to go home? What is the purpose of the entire experiment? I can't wait to find out! If you want to read something different and a book that draws you in from page 1, one-click this and get started. You won't regret it!
This is one of the better Kindle freebies I've read. I'd really like to give it 3.5 stars. I'm not a fan of the cliffhanger ending. I feel like the book just ended in a pretty unlikely spot. Plus the end of the book says the sequel is coming summer of 2015, which has already passed. I can't find the sequel so I guess it's not out yet. I love dystopian stories so I'd definitely read the next book if it were available. The editing in this one was decent, not nearly as bad as a lot of the ones you get for free on Amazon. Overall, a quick and interesting read but definitely leaves you hanging at the end.
I am going to start off by saying that I did not expect to like this book. I haven't read past the first Hunger Games or any of the Divergent series books or any other dystopian books. As I started reading this, I immediately got pulled in. This is a very dark book from Marilyn, especially compared to all her other writings. I am very curious to where and how this book is going to play out. All of the characters mental states are troubling, but interesting, and I didn't want to put this book down!
You will never stop wanting to know what will happen next! Claire is one half of a set of twins, sent to better the future-whatever that means! She finds herself in a world no one understands and she isn't even in her own body it seems. Claire tries to make sense, to resist the games she's forced to play but she's never given the rules to go by. I read this in 24 hours... It's that awesome. I loved it, and we are left with a cliff hanger that will wow you.... What's the choice?!?!? I MUST read book 2!!!
Just wow! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this read. Hold is a captivating, psychologically thrilling dystopian that will make you second guess everything. I have so many questions about what is going on that I can't wait for book 2. This definitely will give you a major book hangover! I wasn't able to put the book down and I finished it within the same day. Be warned there is a major cliffhanger at the end but this book is total worth the torture of waiting!!!
This is a really great book! I actually love it when I don't understand what's going on in a story. It's nice when a book (especially in this genre) can still surprise you and keep you guessing all the way through. I really liked the characters and am excited to learn more about them. I can't wait for the next book!
This book has you second guessing everything. I feel like I was Claire. Is everything as it seems, is this a dream, is that real, is this person really them, is it possible to win, in winning will you truly lose? Wow, going to need some decompression time, have a feeling I'm going to being dreaming of this. Can't wait for Hide! I want to know!
What a wild crazy ride! This book will have you questioning everything. It completely messed with my mind and I'm not sure what is real and what is a dream. I felt as lost as Claire in her memories.
I loved the concept of this book. It's original and exciting and crazy all at the same time. I cannot wait to read Hide to find out what happens next. Great book I highly recommend it.
Move over Katniss, Take a seat Tris theres a new Hero in town! Claire is amazing and pushes her limits in a world where kids are being tested and treated like lab rats with horrible test of basic human nature! This book is dark and daring and in your face with no apologies and so different from what i have read from the author so far and she just keeps on surprising me! I LOVE SURPRISES!
Ack! Too short and I have to wait until March for the next one?! A minor thing, but a few times the use of the word "had" instead of "have" (I think?) made me re-read a couple times... maybe just an editing thing. But really enjoyed the story and, of course, looking forward to the next. Don't leave me hangin'!!
Not at all sure how to rate this one. Didn't love it, but I have a feeling that if I could read the next one, I just might. I went straight to download it, but it's not available. What????? Now I'm dying to have answers and to find out if I love it or hate it. Strange book, but left me wanting to know!!
Twins being treated exactly opposite by their parents; the one as a princess and the other one clearly the unloved one. Now they are separated and part of a scary experiment. I can’t wait to read the sequel as this part does not answer any of the questions – the only downside. I love books about twins. (I am not one!)
Want to hear a funny story? I accidentally bought this book. I had never heard of it so I clicked on the link to it and while it was loading I accidentally clicked the "buy" button on kindle Amazon. So the screen loaded and my clicked registered to the button. I bought this book on accident a long time ago and am just reading this now.
