Wow- talk about emotion! This story, told through dual timelines & multiple POVs, is a suspense that slowly unravels as the past and present start to collide. The tension builds piece by piece, and I found myself completely invested in how everything would turn out.

While reading this book I felt so. many. emotions. At its core it’s about motherhood, friendship, and love. It shows the ripple effects one decision can have on so many lives.

CiCi is one of those characters i felt like i should hate but somehow I still found myself feeling for her. The author really showed each characters’ layers, making them feel real and relatable.

The pacing kept me interested the entire time, but the ending felt pretty open, and I was left wanting a little more closure.

Overall: an emotional, suspenseful slow burn.

This book is a heart-wrenching read. It’s so hard not to feel many different emotions while reading. You worry about Isaac and whether he’s going to be okay, you’re angry at CiCi for multiple reasons, but then you’re also a little sympathetic to Cici because she thought this was a better choice. It’s hard to grapple with wanting to see her be charged and knowing that she’s a single mom – what would happen to her kids?

This book really makes one aware that situations are never just black and white. A lot of times they are very gray, and various shades of gray. Putting myself into Cici’s shoes, I can see where she was coming from. I’m a parent, and while my choices are different, I can’t exactly fault her for her choices.

This is a fast read. The writing is easy and it flows well. I will say this, I wanted more from the ending. It sort of felt like it was left hanging a little bit. As a reader, I have some unanswered questions.

So if you like an emotional read, check this book out!

Jen Craven’s latest release is a drama-filled story that is written in a way that had me thinking, yes, this could easily happen to someone I know or even me. Real-life types of drama stories tend to do that, as it makes you think, and Jen Craven delivered it. I was switching from feeling for what the son’s mother is going through, whose child is tragically hurt. And then also connecting with the mother responsible too. It was an emotional story.

The setup is deceptively ordinary: a teenage party, a trusted friendship, a mother who believes she’s making the right call. But when disaster strikes in the middle of the night, the author captures that awful, disorienting feeling of something going horribly wrong in a place that should be safe. The panic, the confusion, the guilt — it’s all written with such raw authenticity that I felt it right in my chest.

The relationship between the two families is handled beautifully. The narrator’s guilt is overwhelming, yet so believable; she’s a single mother doing her best, and one impulsive decision spirals into a nightmare she never saw coming. Beth’s heartbreak and anger are equally compelling — the kind of emotional complexity that keeps you turning the pages even when the scenes are tough to read.

What really elevates the story is the way the author unravels what actually happened that night. The slow, careful peeling back of secrets, the shifting blame, the fear of what Isaac might reveal if he wakes — it all creates a steady undercurrent of suspense beneath the emotional drama. This is very much a novel about the fragile line between trust and responsibility, and how quickly even the strongest relationships can fracture under pressure. It’s moving, tense, and meticulously observed — perfect for readers who enjoy the emotional depth of Diane Chamberlain and the moral complexity of Jodi Picoult.

Dang!!! I am not a Mommy but a very proud Auntie and you better believe I was screaming How Could You Let This Happen??!!!! Jen Craven made me want to hop in my car and drive from Buffalo to Pittsburgh to hold my niece and nephew tight and make sure they were fully aware of the lesson of this story!! How Can You Let This Happen is a clear your calendar engaging binge-read in one sitting where you totally lose track of time! This is a must read for everyone but may hit closer to home for readers who have school age children.

The beginning of the book when Cici was talking about motherhood was the perfect intro to the book and spot on for what was to come.

Jen took me on an emotional anxiety rollercoaster with this ride as I put myself into Cici’s shoes. I felt as if I was a fly on the wall and feeling all the feels that she felt.

How Can You Let This Happen would be a great addition to a book club discussion group. Reason being there are multiple deep and serious topics that are addressed that are not usually addressed in books. Jen in my opinion went above and beyond and created a very unique outside the box storyline.

How Can You Let This Happen examines friendships after tragedy strikes, consequences of lying, underage drinking at a party, and much more!

Jen Craven’s How Can You Let This Happen deserves more than 5 stars!! Her book is fast paced, addicting, gripping, emotional, engaging, and at times will have you yelling at your Kindle!!! As much as I loved Cici there were times I didn’t agree with her actions!! But seriously this is a must read!!

Parenting is never easy. Finding the balance between knowing when to set firm boundaries and when to give children room to make their own choices is a constant challenge. CiCi finds herself facing this dilemma when her teenage son wants to have friends over, and she agrees to provide alcohol - believing it’s better to supervise than to risk them bringing it anyway. But is it really? This moral decision comes with consequences she could never have fully foreseen. Or perhaps it was avoidable after all.

When something devastating happens, it raises difficult questions about parenthood, about the trust other parents place in you to care for their children, and about how quickly things can spiral when something goes wrong. The aftermath of the event is heartbreaking, and CiCi realizes she has put herself in a situation that, in hindsight, may have been prevented.
As she copes with the fallout and begins to understand what it means to lose everyone’s trust - not only for herself, but also for her children - the story asks some uncomfortable questions.

The book does not wrap everything up neatly. Instead, it leaves several issues unresolved, inviting me (as the reader) to imagine what might happen next. Despite the pain at its core, it also left me with a sense of hope: the possibility that everyone involved might learn from what happened and eventually move forward. This book promised a heartbreaking story, and it delivered exactly that.

Single mom CiCi lives on a ranch with her two teenaged sons, Miles and Wesley. Miles obtains permission from his mom to have a small get together on their property and CiCi also foolishly agrees to supplying the beer. She loves being the "cool" mom. Her dearest friend Beth's son is in attendance and CiCi is aware that Beth is against underaged drinking. What happens that night is a horrifying nightmare. One of the boys has an accident and is hospitalized, teetering on death. Desperate, CiCi calls the police chief for help. Though Luke is married to another woman, he and CiCi have a history. Trauma is also part of CiCi's past. She makes poor choices and decisions that night which spiral and inevitably impact her and her boys as well as others. The family is erased from clubs, community, and school and CiCi's flower business is jeopardized.

The multi-perspective thriller is gorgeously written and landed me right in the middle of the drama...and trauma. Though I vehemently disagree with CiCi's choices and parenting style, I know why she went the route she did. Several characters, however, took the high road and were honest which was refreshing. The tension and suspense kept my eyes glued to each word. Grief of the parents of the hospitalized boy felt real. The ending went in the direction I hoped it wouldn't. But I loved how the timelines were inextricably linked. All in all, well worth reading.

When sixteen-year-old Miles asks his mum, CiCi, if he can have a few friends over for a get together, she immediately agrees. As a single mum, she prefers to have the local kids at hers, so she knows what they are doing.

Miles and his best friend, Isaac, want to have a few beers too. CiCi refuses, but they talk her round. What harm can a few beers do? They are in her garage, she’s keeping an eye on them, it can’t do any harm. Some of the lads bring beers as well, and CeCe ends up turning a blind eye.

Waking from a sleep, Miles is ringing his mum … there’s been an accident at the pond involving Isaac.

CiCi phones her friend, Luke, the local police chief. When he arrives, she begs him to ‘make it go away’. That would mean Luke risking his job, his marriage … everything. Luke can’t say no to her as there is too much history between them.

Goodness, this was such an interesting story. We’ve all turned a blind eye to what our kids have been up to at some point or other. A moral compass story that makes you really stop and think.

CiCi and Beth are best friends and their two boys are best friends also. Can their friendship face the test of time?

My heart went out to CiCi, we can all make mistakes, but to have most of the town turn on her, people she’s known since she was a child, that made for hard reading. At the same time, my heart broke for Beth, this isn’t a situation any parent wants to be in. Having to sit by your child’s hospital bed, waiting to see if they will live or die, absolutely horrendous.

Great characters that made the book not only believable, but also relatable.

I enjoyed how the story shows how an incident can affect so many people in different ways, whether family, friends or neighbours.

Sometimes you make a decision convinced it’s the best one, but unfortunately, you don’t always have everything under control. A single moment of inattention can turn everything upside down and make you lose everything in an instant.

Every coin has two sides, and sometimes it takes a tragedy to finally face the things you’ve been ignoring for years. Once again, decisions have to be made. Do you follow your heart or your head?

People make mistakes—it’s human. Some mistakes, however, have far-reaching consequences. Misjudging a situation does not make someone a bad person, but the world around them is always quick to voice opinions and draw—sometimes wrong—conclusions, and that too brings consequences.

A beautiful book that shows how quickly someone’s life can be completely torn apart.

Oof...this one managed to bring out all kinds of emotion! Books like this always strike a chord with me as a parent. Raising kids is hard and you are constantly second guessing and wondering if you're making the right choices (and my kids are still little so I can only imagine what's in store!). Cici definitely made some bad choices that had terrible consequences, but it's something that plenty of other parents have done and gotten away with. She wasn't that lucky.

Honestly, my heart goes out to the FMC. She gave the kids a few beers and set expectations. Things went horribly sideways and her questionable decision making spiraled from there. But you can't really judge her for it either...she was panicking and guilt stricken and trying to protect her own children. Watching things just crumble was hard but the author did a fantastic job making you feel all the feels! So many layers to this one...definitely give it a read!

Cici is a single mum to two teenage boys. Trying to be the “cool mum,” she makes a split-second decision that changes her life forever. One mistake leaves someone possibly brain damaged, and in the aftermath she lies to her friends, and the police.

But how long can the truth stay hidden? And if it comes out, will anyone understand that she did it to protect her children?

I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone with this book as it’s not my usual genre, but I was pleasantly surprised by how hooked I became on the storyline. The multiple POVs for each character worked really well and added depth to the story. It’s a great example of how one reckless decision can completely change the lives of so many people.

I was a little disappointed with the ending though. It felt quite rushed and left a lot of unanswered questions.

This is one of the most emotional books I have read. One wrong decision can change lives forever. Single mom of two teenage boys, CiCi Donahue hesitates when her son and his best friend ask her to buy them some alcohol for their small get together at her house, but decides that she would rather have them drinking at home than somewhere else. But when the small gathering of a few friends turns into more, the party and drinking becomes bigger. When tragedy strikes, everyone’s life will change forever. CiCi was supposed to be the responsible one, the one all the parents trusted with their children, but now being the cool mom means nothing when lives hang in the balance and underage drinking isn’t something to be dismissed. This book had me torn. My feelings unsettled about how I wanted it to end because either way had it’s merits, but this situation is a reality on so many occasions. I love the friendships , the family ties and forgiveness. I wish this book had not ended when it did, and would love a sequel

It is a very enjoyable book, Jen has a way of capturing your attention from the first chapter, and as a mother, I can see how conflicted Cici is with the decision she has made.

The story, told from multiple points of view, is interesting, suspenseful and emotional, that you cannot help but be empathetic towards the group of friends.

Although I was happy with the amount of suspense in this book, I felt like I needed one more chapter to see how it all panned out with the group dynamics - it ended a little too quickly for me

First book by this author and at first I honestly didn’t really get into the story at all but as the story went on it started showing the heartbreak during this time for both family involved. I get why she lie and didn’t tell the truth about the party but to be honest the boys didn’t tell the truth either so both are at fault but also if the mother didn’t buy the drink they would of got somewhere else. Like I’m glad the young boy made a full recovery but I think it was everybody fault that was at the party they could have stop drinking too but they didn’t. I didn’t really see why the other couple was involved in their marriage was involved in this story I personally don’t think it need to be in this book but it also gave the reader a back story of the history between the group of friends.

It’s a dilemma that every mother goes through when they have teenagers, it was a horrible decision that was made and unfortunately CICI learned the lesson in the hard way by losing her best friend and her reputation. The situation with Luke and Angela was heartbreaking too. This book was emotional on so many different levels. CICI had such a tortured childhood. No one deserves to have grown up the way she did. I have to admit I did like the very last sentence but what kind of person does that make me?

Parenting teenagers is NOT for the faint at heart. It is one of the toughest jobs you could ever have. It's a constant struggle trying to guide your child in the right direction, but still giving them autonomy.

This book was classified as a "mystery/thriller", but I wouldn't call it either of those. It's definitely an emotional drama. It's well-written, following teo different timelines, the past and the present. The characters were likable and relatable.

The ending frustrated me, as there were so many questions left unanswered.

This was such an intoxicating book. I was sucked in from the beginning and held hostage until the end.

Holy buckets. The emotions were unreal. The stress and anxiety. This was brilliantly done. I loved how the story unfolded, the use of time, and the alternating perspectives. It made the story feel so realistic and made the characters carry more emotional weight.

This was like a gut punch. The way things happened, the wanting to be cool and normal, the no-big-deal of it all. This was an emotional roller coaster, and I enjoyed every second.

However well you think you know them, teenagers are wild cards, as one mother is reminded when the party that she allows her son and his best friend to have at her place leads to tragedy after she has failed to supervise the event properly.

Now, she is torn between the dread that the injured boy may never fully recover, and the fear that if he does, her life may change forever due to the version of events he can share. Which will not reflect well on her family...

An interesting and relatable story, this will be enjoyed by most readers. It gets 3.5 stars.

Fast Read but lacking (spoiler alert)

I know this is fiction however, it is just so far fetched, from what is reality. The main character has everything coming up roses for her very bad judgement. (Wanting to be accepted by the teens, rather than looking out for their safety.)The male threw away his marriage and career away to recapture the “road not taken.” Careers are lost, friends are betrayed and lies told and teens could been badly injured driving that night, but everyone lives happily ever after, with no lasting consequences. I might just have been watching a Hallmark movie.

This is a heartbreaking story about a single mum who made one bad decision that left her friends son in a hospital bed. As she desperately tries to keep the truth a secret and protect her son she calls on an old friend to help her. But when the truth comes out, her life and friendships are all thrown up in the air, will she lose everything? Sometimes blood is thicker than water. This is one of those books that will have you questioning what would you do? Was this an accident or did she fail as a mother? Sometimes the truth lies in the grey!

This book was an good read overall, but what really stayed with me was its emotional core. The story digs into the quiet, complicated ways we love the people closest to us, and how far we’re willing to go to protect them. Even when the pacing felt uneven at times, the author delivered moments of genuine heartfelt scenes that remind you how fragile relationships can be and how fierce we become when they’re threatened. It’s not perfect, but it carries a warmth and that makes the journey worthwhile.

A party for underage boys- moms buys a few beers- what could go wrong? She loves that the boys love to hang out at her place. The party is going great, everyone having fun till she hears her son screams. She rushes out to find her worst nightmare! What will happen to her? To the boys? To Isaac?

One mistake. One bad decision is all it takes to upend a life and to feel the reverberations.
I thought Cici deserved what she had to face. I may have yelled at her the most while reading.
I understood the history between Luke and Cici but to settle for something or cover for someone also has challenges.
There are many moral angles in this book that will leave readers pondering what they would do.
Actions always have consequences.

Very well written. Addressed a rite of passage in a small town that puts everyone on one side or the other...being the "cool" parent and being the towns teenagers (including their own) best friend and causing an almost fatal accident or being the trusted parent to do what is right. I"m hoping there will be a follow up book to see what happens. A must read for parents of teenage kids.
