A school’s storied legacy cannot stop student's whispers of mysterious disappearances and a legendary monster, in this terrifying new novel that will entrance fans of Madeline Roux and Claire Legrand.
Jess has always been a runner—always looking for an escape, no matter how many detention centers or “special schools” she’s been sent to. So when she receives a scholarship to the illustrious Danvers-Cutteridge in the mountains of West Virginia, her first plan of action is to find the fastest exit.
But Jess soon learns that this new school has secrets hidden beyond the grand staircases and storied past. A student has gone missing, and Jess’s new friends suspect that they haven’t been told the truth about the disappearance.
As Jess helps search for answers (and a way out), she discovers more of Danvers-Cutteridge’s unsettling history. The abuses and mutilations inflicted on past residents. The strange authority in the headmaster’s celebrated family tree. And the fearsome legend that has haunted the valley for decades—a mysterious girl, dressed in green.
Soon, Jess’s search will take her down into the heart of the school, through the closed-off parts of its history left forgotten in the dark. But walls and iron aren’t enough to keep the hungry darkness at bay…
Laura Creedle is ADHD, dyslexic and neuro-divergent. She writes young adult novels and blogs at http://adhd-writer.com. She lives in Austin, Texas in an urban forest with her husband and son, a cat who thinks he's a dog, and a tiny dog who acts like a cat. Also, a half dozen raccoons who have burrowed into her attic. Unless she plays NPR on a radio in the attic, because as everyone knows, raccoons hate low key pleasant liberalism.
Like most people in Austin, Laura plays guitar. She also owns more than one pair of cowboy boots. Neither of these is a requirement, but they help.
When not writing, Laura volunteers with a kindergarten pre-literacy program at a local school.
Laura Creedle I need a sequel! Jess would be what some would call a "troubled" teen. She has been from special school to special school for her issues and is now working as a barista after saying she'd do online classes to finish high school. But not actually doing them. Not that you can blame her. Her moms ex boyfriend molested her and she stabbed him as a response. That makes one feel like Jess is a teen on a bad path. But her pov gives a teen girl struggling with everything. She has a conscience. When she is accepted at a prestigious prep school far away from her Texas home, her mom jumps at the chance. But when she gets there, the eeriness of the town and school (and legend of the girl in green) gets to her. I was sent an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The creepiness grows as you read and the school and towns secrets come to light. The characters are great (as is the girl in green - as far as monsters go). The scary scenes are actually scary and there are tense scenes where you are wondering what's going to happen next. The writing is perfect. Descriptive. I didn't want it to end and that ending 4.5 stars
I received a free ARC through NetGalley Title: The Girl in Green Written By Laura Creedle Star rating (out of 5): 4.5⭐️ Reading Format: ebook
Description: First note, there are darker themes, violence, and assault. Check your triggers. This YA horror follows the story of Jess, a young girl with a dark past. She has experienced more than most kids her age and has already had to stare a monster in the face.
Jess receives a scholarship to Danvers-Cutteridge school in the mountains of West Virginia where Jess uncovers that the school has many secrets hidden in its past. A student has gone missing, there is a graveyard of unmarked graves and Jess's new friends suspect that they haven't been told the truth about the disappearance and what is going on at school. The friends begin discovering more about Danvers-Cutteridge's unsettling history, past residents, and a legend about the haunted valley and the girl dressed in green.
Without any spoilers, the last part of the book had me on the edge of my seat!
Content review: I read that this was YA and didn’t expect it to be too scary. I was so surprised. The story starts off with an interesting mystery and fun developing friendships. The author does a great job of making you feel unsettled by the surroundings and side characters. It ends strong and will haunt my nightmares for a while. If you enjoy a good horror novel, you will love this. This is YA but there are some darker themes so make sure you are prepared for the content.
When Jess, a troubled teen, gets an acceptance letter to attend a prestigious school it seems too good to be true. As soon arrives on campus she realizes something isn’t right.
This book was fun, fast paced, and had a some twists I wasn’t expecting. The gothic setting of an asylum turned prep school with secret underground tunnels added to the creepiness of the story.
The characters were likable and I admired Jess’s growth throughout the story. I sped through this book and never hit a dull moment. I’ll be on the lookout for more books from Laura Creedle!

Thank you to HarperCollins Children’s Books and NetGalley for the ARC.
This was a super fun read that I raced through in the best way possible! Great crossover between a traditional ghost story/thriller with some classic West Virginia cryptozoology mixed in.
Great main character and supporting cast that you do genuinely care about. Hoping to see more from Creedle as a follow up potentially because I really really enjoyed this.
4.5 ⭐️ Keep your eyes out for this one scheduled to release September 15, 2026!
This was a “one day” read for me. I was very intrigued by what was going on with our MC. I knew there was something not right about the school she was attending, and I was impressed by the willingness of the students to work together to discover what was really going on.
I really enjoy strong female leads, and this one was no exception. Her journey through the whole novel was enjoyable to follow.
I want to thank NetGalley for an advanced copy to read and review! I hope that others will consider picking this book up and reading it!!!

I really enjoyed this read. It definitely had some twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. The author did a great job at making me feel the gut drops, chills, dread, and fear that you would expect out of a horror. Everything was easy to visualize. The characters seemed to lack a little depth, but with the length of the book, it's a bit difficult to develop that many characters and rel
3.5 stars rounded up to 4. loved the premise of this. YA horror novel about a troubled (and very angsty) teen girl who gets sent to a boarding school with more than a few mysterious disappearances and a creepy headmistress.
I am a sucker for YA and for horror, so again, I enjoyed this story but Jess' broodiness did get very old. the ending set up for a second book and I do hope that that happens.
This book was so good and so unique in many ways. It’s suspenseful, mysterious, and has bits of horror/fantasy in it. The book is so fast paced and well written! It has some great twists and turns and the character development is amazing. I loved all the characters and you really find yourself rooting for all of them! This book needs a sequel for sure! I will be reading more books by the author in the future!
I don't read a lot of horror, so I'm not the best judge of how original this was. But I found it to be properly creepy, well-written, with engaging characters and a good blend of suspense and a side of folklore.
