The Lure of Evil: A darkly addictive dragon shifter romantasy

The truth could destroy them both… or forge something far more dangerous.

Cursed by a lack of magic, twenty-seven-year-old Aelia’s life is a constant battle for survival—one she’s not prepared to lose. When her world is altered forever by genocidal radicals, she braves the treacherous lands outside her village in search of retribution, only to find herself unable to escape the dangerous presence of an unwanted companion.

When it comes to Aelia, Keeran can’t control the darkness within him; it’s sunk its claws in deep and won’t let her go—even when he longs to. Tortured by the volatility she evokes in him, he fights against the evil lurking in the shadows of his mind as they hunt down the anti-human extremists sweeping through the land. But as their feelings for each other turn from cold resentment to fiery desire, the secrets piling up around him threaten to fracture more than just her fragile trust… the entire kingdom could erupt into chaos if he’s not careful.

If you love the morally grey heroes of Sarah J Maas and the slow-burn tension of Sarah A Parker, The Lure of Evil will keep you on edge until the final page.

Short Review: A strong romantasy book! Spice, dark brooding handsome man, mysteries to unravel, dragons/shapeshifters and many other tropes you could want! I highly recommend and cannot wait for the next instalment!

Long Review: I feel so lucky to have been an ARC reader for this book, however I almost wish I had come across this series when it was completed because I am dying to know what happens next!

At first I wasn’t sure, it felt sort of like a lot of the popular romantasy elements were being thrown in, while this may seem a negative thing to say in a say in a five star review I thought best to include it in case anyone felt the same as I want them to know they must absolutely keep reading. I’m so glad I kept reading because honestly it was such a strong story.

I loved the Aelia and Keeran, I don’t always enjoy dual pov’s in books but it worked so well here and switched between them both in a seamless manner that worked perfectly for the story telling. There’s so much to unravel in the plot which I love, it’s not obvious to see everything that’s going to happen, which makes waiting for the next book all the more difficult!

The right level of spice and slow burn romance that had me absolutely hooked, I couldn’t recommend this book enough, an absolute must read!

I was really lucky to be given this book as an ARC read from the author and I'm so please I was.
I absolutely devoured it! I couldn't put it down to the point I even burnt dinner! 🫣

The world building is beautifully written giving you a clear picture of the characters surroundings without being too over the top and complex, this makes it easy to picture without taking your focus off the story. The tree house village especially caught my imagination, I'm now hugely disappointed in live in a regular house!

The story itself was medium-fast paced, It wasn't filled with pointless events that have nothing to do with the actual plot just to bulk out the book (this bugs me when authors do this just to hit a word count but it makes no sense).
The story progressed nicely with each event making sense to the plot at the right time, everything was well thought out and didn't feel like random things happened just for some excitement.

Now... the FMC (Aelia) and MMC (keeran) Absolutely love the chemistry between these characters, the banter and the back and forth flows well without feeling forced or cringe. The little one liners and sass between them feels so natural and on point at the time, one of my favourites from Aelia..

“Or are you all bark and no bite?”
“Because so far, all you’ve done is nibble.”

I like that Keeran isn't afraid to put Aelia in her place when she is acting like a bit of a brat, I also loved Aelia when she was a brat! 😂 I love how determined and resilient she is, girl goes through a lot in this book but she doesn't give up.

There is some spice but I personally wouldn't say it was anything too heavy, which is fine, the spice isn't essential to the story.
Do check your trigger warnings if you are sensitive to anything.

Overall.
This is a romance filled with magic, shifters, adventure and a plot that had me hooked! I feel like we have so much more to see from our main character's, we're just getting to know them and there is soooo much more come in their story.
I'm exited to see Aelia grow and really come into her own, I think we will see amazing things from her. I'm also hoping to get more insight into Keeran and his past, I there's more layers to be uncovered with him and I am absolutely here for it!

I can't wait for book 2 I'll be first in line!

I went into this one not knowing a single thing about it. Other than snippets of social media posts describing it which appealed to me.

After receiving an advanced reader copy from the author and all I can say was what a pleasant surprise!

I enjoy a good fantasy book, however more often than not the prose irritates me with language that doesn't fit the plot or time period, lame made up swear words and SUCH cringey spicy scenes. Well not here! Hand on heart I couldn't put it down, it flowed well, had an element of predictability (which I like as I hate not understanding what's going on) and elements of surprise.

There's a stubborn but strong FMC and an MMC who will do anything for her, I liked the dynamic between them and the pace of the romance.

I'm genuinely looking forward to the next one and have already signed up to read the novella on the author's website.

Great work Jenny!

ARC Review - I ate this book up within 24 hours!

Dragon shifter Romantasy with touch her and die, instant connect with them both fighting against it. He falls first.

Amazing story build up with great twists, heartbreak and moments making you gasp!

FMC is headstrong, a bit of loose canon that drives the MMC mad (in the best ways 🤭).

Loads of unanswered points that I can't wait to see unravel in book 2!

This is refreshing as a shifter book with loads of different types of shifters that built a really rich world.

5 star read 🌶🌶

ARC read
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It pulled me into a realm of magic and I stayed for the plot, the yearning and the questions I need answered. The ending dropped me like the ride Olivion at Alton Towers leaving me breathy and a swirling head full of explicit bad words and astonishment.

I will 100% be NEEDING the next book as soon as possible.

Would highly recommend for those who enjoy Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, A Dawn of Onyx and On Wings of Blood

I loved this, a dark romantasy, slowburn and just the right amount of spice and plot.
I loved the more mysterious element of the book and that kept me really going, of course there is the whole typical romantasy thing going on, but that is done in a nice way. And I loved that the book also had a plot, not just spice.

That cliffhanger though, I can not wait for the second book to come out.

What did I think? ...Can I put sweary words here? I F***ING loved every bit of this book devouring me over the last couple of days. I had to force myself to go and do chores just to stretch out how long it took me read because I absolutely would have finished this in one sitting.

The world building is so descriptive and beautifully written that it was like walking through the world with the characters. I am low-key jealous that I do not live in a tree house in the forest. The story isn't all pretty and wonderful life, there are some dark elements so please read the trigger warnings first. That being said though, it was written in seamlessly and fit with the current situation rather than just having something go wrong dropped into the story at random. The story progressed at a pace that leaves room for a little anticipation but not enough that you are bored or to the other extreme and can't keep up.

Don't get me started on the main characters! 'cause I may have a girl crush on Aelia and Sir! I will do whatever you growl at me. Keeran is every bit the dark and brooding mmc we all love but what set him apart was his impatience and inability to put up with her bullshit for too long and call her out on it. The dialogue and banter between these two is bloody brilliant and I was stuck between giggling like a little girl with her first crush and being just as stubborn as Aelia. Aelia is the FMC we've been waiting for (maybe i'm a little rose tinted but damn). She's not some young girl just entering adulthood or teenage years with long suffering trauma or baggage. Don't get me wrong, she's not had an easy time but she's been working hard and has the strength to prove it, the attitude to make any woman proud and a stubborness that rivals most. She has moments of niavity in the sense that has her trusting those she really shouldnt, but this fits with her having not been out of where she's lived. See, new girl crush, forgiving stupid moves even if they did have me shouting at my kindle in the middle of the night.
Favourite quote from Aelia; "What are you waiting for? Off you fuck." simply because it reminds me of something my sister would absolutely say.

Be warned- the cliffhanger will have you almost throwing your kindle but this story really is so worth the torture of having to wait for book 2. I can't wait to be immersed in this world again.

Worldbuilding ⭐️⭐️
Caracter devemopment ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Writing ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶
Emotional damage ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think I overhyped myself when I read the thropes for this book. Dragons, dark moraly gray mmc, telephatic talking and shapeshifting. And the problem with this is that there are minimal talk, or story, with these thropes. So because of this I didnt match with the book. The mmc Keeran is a considerate, careing and understanding mmc with lots of insight to his own 'problems'. Tho his otherform claws at him from the inside he's pretty much in controll the whole time.

Aelia, fmc, is actually the broody one. Picks a fight about everything and we get so little backgroundstory she is hard to connect with. She gets stronger with all the loss and betrayals that she experiences, so that part was well written and relatable.

As for their emotional ride I felt a lack of something. And the rollercoaster between 'I hate him, now I love him, Hate him again and then love him where too fast pased, so it lost its credability. I also wished we got more of Aelias inner reactions to the betrayals she experiences and not from Keerans pov. And there were alot of his pov.
There were so much potensial with the worldbuilding in this book, unfortuneatly most of it are spent in the woods and on the road. But I have high hopes there will be more of this in book two.

I will say the plot was intruiging, and potensial is high! And the spicy scenes were very memorable. The emotional damage from Aelias losses is also heartstabbing and realy well written. So this elevates the book alot. Well done to the author. The potensial for the next book is high as a kite, so eventhough this book was not for me, I feel like the next one will be. Thank you for picking me to arc read, and good luck on the launch!

My first ever ARC read and what a book to be the first!
Dark, emotional, and addictive!
I need book two immediately

This story completely pulled me in and I absolutely devoured it in a couple of days!

We follow Aelia, a young woman who should be powerful; she’s faster, stronger, clearly other and yet she’s unable to shift into a second form. In a society where shifting defines worth and status, that makes her little better than human in the eyes of others.

The opening chapters set up her found family: her guardian Otis, her human best friend Mirra, and Fenrir, a wolf shifter who could have an easier life but chooses loyalty instead. They all help make the tragedy that follows even more devastating and sets the stage for a revenge-driven journey!

Enter the MMC Keeran; brooding, powerful, and drowning in shame over the monster he believes himself to be.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is soooo good and intense, driven by mistrust, clashing goals, and a reluctant partnership neither of them wants. The slow burn is tense, layered with restraint and undeniable chemistry, and that touch her and die energy * chefs kiss.

There is spice but nothing too crazy, and one scene in particular was sooo good! There are some trigger warnings to be mindful of. Personally, I didn’t find them overwhelming as I’ve read much darker, but I appreciate that this will vary from reader to reader.

And then there’s the ending… a full on cliffhanger that left me staring at the page and absolutely desperate for book two.

If you love dark fantasy romance with dragons, shifters, morally complex MMCs, strong FMCs, found family, and a true enemies-to-lovers slow burn, I highly recommend this book.

Let me start by prefrencing how honored I am to be given a special preview of this book <3

This book is a fantastic romantasy! It's got spice, a dark and brooding handsome guy, mysteries to solve, dragons and shapeshifters, plus all the other tropes you could ask for!

At first, I was a bit unsure, which is totally understandable since this is my first dragon shifter romance.
It did feel like a lot of the popular romantasy elements were being thrown together in a pot and mixed together. While that might sound like a negative thing, I thought it was important to mention. Regardless, you absolutely need to keep reading. I'm so glad I did because it turned out to be such a strong story.

The world-building is beautifully crafted, giving you a clear view of the characters' surroundings without being overly complicated, and let me tell you - I've seen a alot of that. This makes it easy to visualize everything without losing focus on the story.
The pacing of the story is also medium-fast, so it always keeps you interested without seeming like too much, and it doesn't have any pointless events that don't contribute to the plot just to make the book longer. Everything felt well thought out and didn’t seem random just for the sake of excitement.

I’m so grateful to be part of Jenny’s ARC team, thank you for giving me this opportunity to read this book.

The story begins by introducing our FMC, Aelia, and the village she lives in. I absolutely loved that they are living in treehouses, it's different from anything I’ve read before and it immediately helped set this world apart.
The book does start a little slower but then the event that introduces us to the MMC, Keeran, really ramps it up a knotch. From that point on, I was fully hooked.
While we don’t yet know a huge amount about the wider world, it’s clear there’s so much more beneath the surface. I’m already desperate to explore the different areas and learn more in future books.
This story brings us grief and heartache, spice and cheekiness, betrayal, twists and turns.
It ends on a cliffhanger that I’m now left with a billion questions I need answering.

Standout chapters for me:
Chapter 14 – things start heating up. The line “cold water did nothing” had me giggling so much.
Chapter 21 – ultimate spice!! Absolutely loved it and it definitely left me wanting more.
Chapter 35 – that ending… the questions...

As my first ARC read and also my first dragon read, I loved it. I’m so excited for what’s coming next.

Rating: 4 stars, purely because I wished it was longer.

A SOLID, ENJOYABLE READ WITH PROMISE 🖤

Thank you to the author for the ARC of The Lure of Evil. This was a good, engaging read, not one that completely swept me away, but still enjoyable and easy to sink into.

I really liked the setup: a FMC without magic in a dangerous world, morally grey characters, and a journey driven by survival and revenge. Aelia is resilient and grounded, and I appreciated that her strength isn’t flashy 🤔 it’s practical, earned, and rooted in endurance.

Keeran brings that classic internal conflict energy…dark impulses, restraint, and the constant tension of wanting something he feels he shouldn’t. Their dynamic shifts slowly from resentment to something warmer, and the slow burn was handled nicely without feeling rushed.

That said, for me, it didn’t quite hit the standout level. Nothing was bad by any means, the writing is solid, the world interesting, and the story flows well 🤔 it just didn’t fully grab me emotionally in the way I hoped it might. It felt familiar rather than surprising.

Still, it’s a well-constructed fantasy romance with morally grey tension, high stakes, and a strong foundation. I can absolutely see this working really well for readers who enjoy character-driven journeys and restrained slow burns.

A good, steady fantasy romance with intriguing characters and a strong premise 🤌🏻 enjoyable throughout, even if it didn’t completely steal my heart 🖤

Arc Review

This is a dark, emotional romantasy with a medium-to-fast pace that doesn’t waste time getting its claws into you. The story leans into darker elements and isn’t interested in being soft or pretty. Read the trigger warnings!

I’m usually not a third person reader, but it was done so well that I never felt distanced from the characters. The emotional connection stayed intact, which is crucial for a story this heavy.

The vibes are vibing in this. The humour and one liners land naturally, and the banter between the two MCs feels organic rather than forced. The sass is good, and not cringy, which is rare.

The plot of brutal in places, dark and there are moments that genuinely make you pause, stare at your Kindle, and whisper ’noooo’. (especially near the 75% part 👀).

The plot itself is intriguing, with plenty of threads that hint at where the series could go next. It feels like a foundation has been laid for something bigger, and that sense of possibility kept me hooked.

Overall, this is a solid dark romantasy with a strong atmosphere and sharp character dynamics. It’s absolutely worth the read if you like your romance wrapped in emotional pain.

I was lucky to read an arc of this book although I didn’t know I would have to wait for book two and cannot wait for the next book. This was a dual POV with Keeran our dark broody dragon shifter and Aelia fearless and determined. Her village fair was attacked by the Astrean guard who are cleansing the realm of humans. Her guardian was killed and her friend Fenrir was taken and she vows to get him back. Keeran is already interested in Aelia and sets about helping her to get to Llmera the previous stronghold of the dragons before they were all destroyed. Keeran starts to sense the pair bond between them but tries to stop getting close to Aelia. Slow burn with some spice these two are destined for each other and that plays out as the story continues. There was an element of predictableness but reading a lot of fantasy you will get that. The story flows nicely. The world building is descriptive and the spicy scenes were hot especially the separate room scene at the Inn. My only tiny ick was I didn’t think the name Keeran reflected a mean moody dragon shifter but that’s just my opinion. I look forward to continuing the series.

3.5/4 ✨

Advanced Reader Copy Review.

Honestly I was going to rate this a 3 before I got halfway through. Luckily I kept going and the story just kept getting better leading to the 4✨.

The world building and character intros were good but I was finding it hard to really get into it. Nothing was really making me love them.

The FMC turned out to be my favourite character. She is feisty, strong and whitty. She doesn't take any shit which I love and even though she has a hard time in the book and you feel her pain you also get to witness her strength. She doesn't have someone saving her at every turn and has no choice but to battle on alone.

I enjoyed the relationship that blossomed between the FMC and MMC. Keeran is a great character. I did end up loving him too. at first the secrets between them just killed me a little and I didn't feel like they were progressing! I guess it is worth it in the end.

All of that said, it was the last 150 pages that made me love this book and I'm intrigued to read the next one.

Lure of Evil completely consumed me. It pulls you in fast and doesn’t let go. The tension builds beautifully, layered with longing and emotional intensity that keeps you completely invested. Every interaction feels loaded, every moment crackles, and I was fully along for the ride from chapter one.

The FMC is everything I love: badass, stubborn, and unapologetic, while the MMC is fiercely protective in a way that makes your heart melt. Their dynamic is addictive, especially because nothing feels easy or handed to them. The plot kept me guessing the whole time — no predictable storyline here. Just twists and turns that genuinely surprised me and made it impossible to put down.

Now… the ending. I both loved and hated it. The cliffhanger had me absolutely gagging for the next book. I slammed my Kindle down in disbelief, immediately needing answers.

If you love high tension, morally grey vibes, strong characters, and an ending that leaves you desperate for more — this one is a must-read ✨

A highly addictive Romantasy!

An excellent first in the series full of all things I love to read about relating to Romantasy. The world building and the attention to detail was so inspiring I really felt I was there in the midst of the pages.

I loved the feistiness of Aelia. She is strong, she is fierce, she is *almost* a bit too rude at times. Her determination is quite admirable. I LOVED her encounters with a certain dark and mysterious fire performing traveller aka Keeran.

The back and forth between the pair was warming to read, with some brilliant one liners. The chemistry between them was top notch.

“Darling, if I were trying to show off, you’d be flat on your back.”

The story was so action packed, yet I feel there is so much more for Aelia to learn about herself. Can’t wait for the next one!

I was lucky enough to have received an ARC of this book from the author which I am really grateful for.

Ok i was given this as an ARC read and the book had promise i mean Dragon shifters.. whats not to like

The book was written beautifully and I really liked the premise of it, there was so much potential with the world building but unfortunately most of it was spent on the road traveling and not much really happened. Maybe this will come in book two?

I enjoyed Aelia she was funny but also strong and i enjoyed her and Keerans relationship, i just wish there was bit more action and some background information regarding Aelia as we got Keerans but again this may come in book two

The one thing i will say is this book is said to be a dark romantasy i got very much YA vibes but then it could be i have read way more caotic books so this felt tame

The story had potential, and book one is a slow start but im hoping book two kicks it all off.. and of course its been left on a cliffhanger.. Jenny we dont like those 😂 so book two when your ready (quickly) please!!

So I've steamed through this book and finished it in one day!

This book is written in third person pov and story includes themes of forced proximity, fated mates and he falls first with a dash of touch her and die...

This is a dragon shifter romantasy with a feisty FMC

I loved the bite that Aelia's character has, the fierce loyalty and need to protect others whilst seemingly having no regards to her own safety or opinions of others.

The sass levels are something I really enjoy in a story- so her cockiness had me chuckling!

I can't wait for book 2 to answer some of the questions this left me with...

The separate rooms chapter...well IYKYK Keeran found a way....

Fave quote :

'Darling, if I were trying to show off, you'd be flat on your back'....

'Well, I'm game if you are'

For those who enjoyed SJM's Acotar and RY's Forth Wing morally grey MMCs as well as their stories!

I devoured this book!
It's fast-medium paced, and that's my jam. I just had to know what happened next.
The banter between Aelia and Keeran <3

The story progresses so nicely, and the environment is beautifully described in a way that easily paints a picture in your mind. It was like watching a movie play out in this fantastical world of shifters, humans, and gods.

Tension <3

There's magic and adventure, and a romance that will have you hooked. I would say the romance takes centre stage, but there is some nice world-building going on that slowly begins to play a bigger part as the book progresses.

Be sure to read the trigger warnings, as this is a dark romantasy. There was one scene that was not my cup of tea. But I loved the book as a whole!

I think I have an idea where book 2 might be going, and I am so excited to see how the story progresses!

I was kindly accepted as an ARC reader for this book - and I just could not put it down! The world and character building is so thorough - where is Callodosis and how do I get there?!
There’s just the right amount of spice considering the two main characters have only recently met - hoping in the second book that things develop (if you know what I mean!). I can’t wait to see more of Keeran now that he can be his true self.
No part of this book was “boring” - there were no pointless story lines or side quests that made you think ‘hang on what’s going on here? That was pointless?’.
Jenny has beautifully written this book and as soon as I finished it, I was so sad that we have to wait for book 2 because THAT CLIFFHANGER, JENNY!!

Overall - beautiful, exquisite, chefs kiss x

The Lure of Evil is a dark, seductive dive into a world of dragon shifters, magic, and forbidden desire.

From the very first chapters, the tension between danger and passion pulls you in. The author does a fantastic job creating a rich, atmospheric setting that feels both enchanting and perilous.

The characters are compelling—especially Aelia, who balances strength with vulnerability in a way that makes you root for her. The chemistry between the leads is intense and addictive, and the stakes keep rising as secrets unravel.

Final Verdict:
If you love romantasy with dragon shifters, morally gray characters, and a story that blends danger with desire, this book is for you. I’m already looking forward to the next installment in The Rise of Darkness series!

Thank you to the author for this ARC
I really enjoyed this story, I was intrigued from the get go and was enjoying the journey the two characters were on. I like that it was a classic enemies to lovers this time and more just an MMC down bad for the FMC even when her feelings took a turn.

The world building was good and there was a lot of time spent creating and setting the scene for readers.
I’m not a fan of 3rd person so that was a little downside for me and the other thing is I felt like it dint hit the spot towards the end. Although I did really enjoy it I just felt like there wasn’t a hard hitting “last 100 pages” vibe to the book that most fantasy’s have however it did end on a cliff hanger and I probably will dive into book 2 when it comes out!!

Ohhh my goshhh. This book had me gripped from start to finish, what a book this was!!

Humans are treated as nothing and start getting hunted/collected by a group of savage shifters.

The main FMC was amazing!! She was feisty and held her own throughout the story, when she finally let someone help her 😑 the twists in this story had me!

After her world gets turned upside down, she goes to seek revenge and is joined by the MMC who is charmingly dangerous 🥵 the spice in this was spiceyyyy... The wall scene... IYKYK 🥵🥵🥵 I'll say no more!

Go read it!!

I had the absolute honour and pleasure to be an ARC reader for this book. Thank you Jenny!
This book and the prequel moved you into the “I read and buy whatever this author writes” category.

The lure of evil is a strong, captivating romantasy book, which I really enjoyed reading from the first page til the last. And I can wait to read the second book.
The world is different from all I have read so far and it took me a bit to get into it.
The tension between the FMC and the MMC is written beautifully and don’t get me started on the yearning…
The end left me speachless and I have so many questions… I

This book has it all!
With a captivating story that is perfectly written and with great characters (the MMC is to die for!) I just couldn't put it down.

It is a delicious slow-burn with a well paced progressing story.
It ends with a Cliffhanger that was really good, but it makes me crazy since the second book won't come out for months.

If you like Romantasy you really have to read this book.
The hot MMC who is the perfect mix of power and heart also happens to be a dragonshifter!
The FMC is strong willed, loyal and fierce.

This book was absolutely gorgeous from start to finish and I couldn’t put it down!!

I loved Aelias fiery determination to prove herself when she was born with less than the rest of her kind. And although Keeran is a monster to practically everyone on the outside, we see his softness shine and him physically restrain the monster within him when it comes to Aelia.

This book has all the tension and banter and the spice when it gets there is SO good! And the world that the author has built is absolutely phenomenal!

I need book 2 now!!!

I feel so lucky to have been chosen by Jenny to read this book as an ARC and can honestly say it had me gripped from start to finish, I loved every part and stayed up until 0400 to finish it! The characters had depth and were easy to engage with and ultimately fall in love with. Their development was beautiful and the story telling and magical elements were sublime. I found myself lost entirely to this descriptive, otherworldly and spellbinding reading experience, I didn’t want the book to end and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Thank you so much Jenny! 🥰

Ooo I LOVED it! The suspense 😫 it killed me the whole way through but Keeran and Aelia ❤️ I’ve been dying for a good dragon book and what better way to start 2026 than to read this book!
The spicy scene definitely spiced and I’m here for it.
It felt so refreshing reading a book that wasn’t all spice and no plot… this book definitely has plot and I can’t wait to read the next one.
That ending though… how could you finish it like that and leave me hanging?
