EarthCent Ambassador #23

Cruise Night on Union Station

Rate this book
Ambassador Kelly McAllister sets off on a multi-stop diplomatic vacation, visiting the alien worlds that provided gate access for humanity’s first interstellar cruise ship. Back on Union Station, the Antiques Tunnelshow is in full swing under new Grenouthian management, and everyone suddenly wants to know what their family heirlooms are worth.

Mike and Fenna, from the third generation of humans on Union Station, begin a semester abroad at the Miklat’s Open University campus, juggling Engineering for Humans and an Art Management seminar taught by the professor everyone loves to avoid.

Join the adventure as humanity edges closer to the official launch of the Human Empire, and the namesake ambassador of the twenty-three-book saga nears a long-earned retirement.

I wrote Date Night on Union Station while taking a break from work on a science fiction epic I've been struggling with for years. The goal was to cheer myself up and to find out if there is still an audience for a science fiction comedy that gets its laughs from dialogue and funny situations rather than from gross-outs and shocks. As many readers have pointed out, the EarthCent series could be rated PG under the old fashioned system, no bloodshed, no graphic sex, no four letter words. And after years of imagining a galaxy for my epic in which multiple human civilizations are at war with each other, it did me a world of good to write about a galaxy where most people are just trying to make a living and find some joy in life. I received so many requests to extend the Date Night universe into a series that I put aside my epic for an extended period to write a sequel, Alien Night on Union Station. The events take place five years after the conclusion of Date Night, and the plot involves a mix of business, diplomacy, gaming and family relations. As a bonus, we finally get to meet Kelly's mother. After the positive response to Alien Night, I wrote a third book for the series, High Priest of Union Station, which is currently in the editing stage and due out in mid-October. I just started a book that extends the EarthCent galaxy with a different mission and cast of characters, though they may intersect at some point.

A much awaited extension of the EarthCent Ambassador series.

Progress toward the Human Empire takes more and more the centerstage of the themes in the stories as Ambassador McCallister moves ever closer to that day of full retirement. Within this book, there is a brief update to nearly all the members of the growing character list. And typical of these novels, there is a complication 'deal' in the works highlighted by the machinations of numerous species representatives driven often by their own self-interests but ultimately to the benefit of advancing the Human Empire along its checklist to full recognition as the replacement to EarthCent.

The writing keeps getting better.

E M Foner has created a huge universe of characters through the years and I appreciate that this book especially includes background information and referances seamlessly written into the story as it develops. With, I believe, 4 generations of of people and numerous storylines that all overlap it's easy for some of us socially challenged to get lost but this volume has the reminders build in. For those seeing this series for the first time this book would be a fun read but would be even better if you start at the 1st book and enjoy the ride.

another wonderful

Well POOP! That went by too fast. A true cliche, that time flies when you’re having fun. And now I have to wait for the next one. Thank goodness that EM Foner is so prolific. And of course, at some point i will reread the whole thing in suggested order, instead of one series at a time, as I mostly did the first time through. So now we wait to see how the Trophy unfolds, hosting the Antiques Tunnel Show. 🤓

Take me to my happy place…

I can’t imagine anyone just dropping in on this book and making heads or tails of it — but that’s just a reason to start at the beginning and read all of the EarthCent Ambassador books (and related spinoffs). I enjoy reading a story where the characters are largely competent and well meaning. Real life gives me plenty of incompetent spiteful characters…

Book 23 in the series

Kelly, Joe, and Beowulf go on a diplomatic mission (vacation) to visit several open worlds accompanied by the relevant nonhuman ambassadors. Things mostly go smoothly aboard the Rainbow liner and on Union Station. There are also other interactions with students and their instructors and nonhumans. Some interesting concepts are discussed. A great story.

Is retirement in sight for the Ambassador?

Kelly’s part time hours are always more than expected and the idea of retirement so very tempting but surely a cruise on the new liner can’t be too stressful.
Children and grandchildren are coming to terms with changes and adulthood. A perfect tale of growth regardless of your planetary species.
