The Grimm Society #4

The Grimm Reaper

Everly Hart’s shade training takes a dangerous turn when she’s sent to study at Scythemore Academy, where she’s the only human in a school full of monsters. She’s supposed to blend in, gather intel, and stay focused, which would be a lot easier if half the student body didn’t look at her like she was tomorrow’s lunch special. Not to mention her relationship with Hunter is falling apart. He’s suddenly distant, elusive, and hiding something from her.

But grimms are turning up dead, and all the clues lead straight back to Scythemore. The murders don’t match any pattern Everly recognizes, but each one points toward something a plot tied to the sealed supernatural prison holding the Grimm Reaper. Someone inside the academy wants that prison opened—and they’re getting dangerously close. And if she doesn’t uncover the truth fast, she may become the final piece in someone else’s plan.

3 STARS. Ah. Feelings. I have many.

I will be the first to tell you that I’ve been OBSESSED with this series since page one of the first book.

I love Chanda Hahn’s ability to weave a story. The way she is able to make a story come alive with her settings and characters always blows me away. Not to mention the plots that make sure you’re never quite sure where it will take you. This book is no exception to any of that.

Truly, I’m amazed at Chanda’s ability to introduce AN INSANE amount of new characters and plot lines. (LOVE Arturo)

BUT.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that one of the reasons I love this series so much (aside from the genius plots and competent fmc) is Ian Holmes. I know this isn’t a romance series, but that’s one thing I like about Chanda’s books is that she does a slow-burn subplot SO WELL.

I don’t know what else to say other than I am super SUPER disappointed in this book in that area. Not only is Ian hardly around, but when he is, it’s like he’s not all himself. He’s dating his old girlfriend, which I hate, but then he admits to still liking Everly and it just feels slightly icky. That’s someone I criticized Hunter for and I hate seeing it in Ian. Ugh. And then he’s acting confused (and kinda weak?) after joining Sythmore. Where’s the cool loner Ian we know? Seriously, what happened?

Also, there was literally no mention of Ian after he joins the final showdown. Nothing. Dang. I am just so disappointed.

Also this book is kind of jarring in its tone-shift part way through. There were so many points it almost felt like starting all over with a new cast. And I don’t really like Kieren. Ugh. I feel off balance from him I guess. I don’t care about his trauma and I don’t know if this is insta-love or what—but I hate every part of it. I’m so confused.

Also, EVERLY. What was wrong with this girl, flip flopping like a fish between all of these guys, acting like some know-it-all-special fmc? She doesn’t listen to anyone, and doesn’t really care (or even THINK ABOUT) any of her friends. She doesn’t feel about her mom being back, doesn’t feel anything about having LITERALLY DIED. Like, what? She is giving generic special ya heroine. What happened to one of my favorite heroines? She’s acting a little bit like an idiot in this book. (Especially when she’s in the Grimlock prison)

Also, there were a decent amount of typos and formatting mistakes throughout the hardcover I got. I don’t really mind, but I do wonder if things were rushed maybe. (There were even repeated chunks of texts that were clearly accidental—around Ch 30–though not in the ebook, which is good) Again, no points off for that, just wanted to mention it.

Overall, I love this series and this author’s writing—but the story itself was a bit of a letdown.

It’s my own personal taste, but I felt like it just didn’t give me a single thing I was hoping for. (I guess I kinda wanted Everly to an arc dealing with morality and mortality, and ANY kind of progress with Ian as a character from where we left him last book.) Everly herself was also more rude—I feel like—than before?

I need to stop thinking about this or it’s going to really bother me. This was my favorite new series of last year. Each book was five stars, and I genuinely couldn’t tell you my favorite between them.

*sighs*

It physically hurts to give this book 3 stars. It’s possible for the next book to make up things, but I just can’t tell the direction of where things are going at this point.

Idk what happened with this book but it was insane I fully admit to loving the previous books and was so excited for this one. But I feel like this book didnt flow very well and was sort of choppy. And it was also mention how special and one of a kind the MFC was a ton ( I do know thats part of the YA territory but it felt overdone) AND WHY... WHY did we add THIRD love interest 😭

Amazing

Hahn brings adventure and excitement with mystery and slow burn relationships with her stories of The Grimm Society. I can't wait for the next one.

Please finish book 5 ASAP because I cannot handle this kind of a cliffhanger! So many cuties for E and so much action, I LOVE IT.
In the other hand, I do feel that there is less caution with wording in this series. Words like “bastard” and “damn” caught me by surprise since I don’t remember Daughters of Eville having them…

Reader’s Notes:

*Series or Connected Books?* book 4 of a series & must be read in order (there will at least be one more book after this based off the ending)

*Point Of View:* Everly (with the prologue & epilogue from a different pov)

*Any Cursing Or Possibly Offensive Language?* there are about 2 uses of the ‘b’ word for someone born out of wedlock (but only one use is used to mean that)

-there is also one mention of a character cursing, but no words used

*Romance?* Yes! Just kisses

-in previous books Everly is interested in two guys and by the end of The Grimm Hacker it seemed like she chose which she wanted to be with; this book goes back slightly to the ‘which one’ internal fight but it isn’t as prominent & she is still with her chosen guy (though she also has the cover of dating one of them given to her by their school)

-a new guy is introduced near the end who might become a new love interest in a coming book

*Things To Know:*

–there is some fantasy violence & death

-there are some mentions of vampire bites happening

-it is mentioned that in the past a character committed mass murder (still intends to in the future as well)

Review:

This was a great addition to the series! And I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for the next book with how this one ended! 👀

I enjoyed Everly’s investigation and getting to know the grimms she was going to school with. I loved that they mostly didn’t like her and she took it in stride, but also wasn’t allowing herself to be pushed over. I also loved seeing how the grimms (or as they call themselves reapers) trained and that they had different weapons/fighting styles than Everly was used to.

I’m hoping for the romance that we see Everly get together with the new guy in the next book. With the various situations that arose in the last book and this one makes me think it’ll be the case, but who knows. 🤷‍♀️

Summary:

Everly Hart is training to be a shade but finds herself in the middle of trouble in order to complete it.

Transferring from Gravemark, Everly goes to Scythemore in order to grow her shade abilities. Only thing is, Scythemore is a school for grimms training to hunt down their own kind who prey on the humans. And none of them like grievers – their human equivalent – which is what Everly is in addition to becoming a shade. Not to mention that Everly finds herself in the middle of an investigation unheard of. Grimms are being killed in town without cause and all the evidence points back to someone at Scythemore being responsible. And it might point to a bigger plot that has to do with one of Scythemore’s secrets…

The only human in a school full of monsters?!? Yes! Sign me up! I have been patiently waiting on the audiobook and it didn’t disappoint! While I may have missed the crew dearly, I eagerly followed Everly as she traveled to Scythemore Academy. I loved the twists and turns this one took me on. I was also intrigued with the vampire bites in this one and I enjoyed following the mystery. I cannot wait to see what happens. Some bombs were revealed, and I just can’t believe how this book ended!!! I’m desperate to listen to the next book. I need to find out what happens next.

The narrator, Amy McFadden did an amazing job portraying Everly and several of the other characters. I was able to easily distinguish them as the story progressed. For me, Amy breathed life into the characters.

A very special thanks to Tantor Audio for the gifted ALC.

Loved it but unlike the ones before it was a bit anoying in the twists and the suddenly different vibe I got from it...(darker in general)
The ending drove me nuts - the first real agonizing clifhanger I've read in years in general and so NOT like the other books in this series...
So take a big breath and prepare yourself for a bit of a different journey this time...

Unexpected & Thrilling

I was not expecting the change to the storyline, which took place. However, what a compelling turn of events for each character. Can’t wait to read book 5. I do not want to give any spoilers… totally worth the read. (Curious what happens to Ian.)

This series hasn't been my favorite by Hahn but it has slowly grown on me. I think this series may have suffered from too many characters and this book cut away most of them and focused on Everly. Also I'm an absolute sucker for the new character that was introduced.

Ahhh!!

Love her writing! I thought this was the end and was getting worried as I got closer to the end of the book that it would end too abruptly. Wow! Loving the new guy Kieran. Can't wait for the next one!! Eeee!
