The book jump-starts in the middle of a chase as our fave, fiery mercenary Mira finds a lead to her past and red-eye situation, accompanied by her trusty sidekick and my beloved smart-mouthed aibot, Cybel. The space adventure dial is turned to high, so strap yourself in. The jaw-dropping starts early as I've already gasped more than twice, and it's only page 38.
The lore evolves in this installment and there are a lot of cool stuff like the portraits and the portal, of course, and it is a testament to the author's writing that these objects, despite their awesomeness, feel like they have their natural place in this galaxy. Focused details bring descriptions to life, allowing her to successfully share the world she imagined
In the intimate POVs, the characters' sense of self envelops us, caressing the readers inate feeling to protect their own. It is as if we experience the emotional turmoil that wrenches the characters' insides for ourselves. Kalie's POV always seems to stand out more than the others in that aspect. This installment feels more internal, more psyche-coded.
Does not mean this book isn't rebellion-packed and embellished with heart-in-your-throat action. And we must not forget, dripping with delicious intrigue. The political games and intricacies of diplomacy and the court weave a twisty ball of deception, presenting so many loops, Palpatine himself would be proud. Just when you think you know where the story is going, we are bamboozled with such a turn of events you'd think the author was on death sticks (where is Obi-Wan when you need him?). I literally exclaimed WTF, loudly, many times. I am constantly in awe of what Mallory Moss comes up with, and then I realize it could not go any other way.
Must take note here that I love Zane & Kallie together — they just complement each other. Speaking of, that 'secret' in the middle of the book? We all guessed it, right? Talk about throwing a monumental monkey wrench into the works.
I personally needed the story to breathe more in certain parts. There were sections where I was lost with all that was happening at once, plus new lore and info in the mix. Some explanations needed to be a bit more comprehensive, more in-depth. Also, Mira repeatedly talking or musing about unrequited feelings for a certain someone minimizes the forcefulness of her character. It scratched at my nerves. This was not needed in the beginning chapters. Later in the story, when she is with them, it is justifiable — makes us sympathize. It is essential for me to spotlight that when the narrative harmonizes, which is mostly the case, it is heart-exploding and glorious.
As always, in the midst of a galactic war, through atrocities and loss, this book champions peace. And hope. And change for the better. Change that you need to go after, or it will never happen. It touches the subjects of equality and basic rights for all peoples. It measures the cost of sacrifice. And it emphasizes that we should not judge a book by its cover. Or better yet, a person by their scars.
This is a compelling, get-ready-to-be-tortured-and-like-it sequel. Raising the stakes while the war actually grows even larger in scale, gifting us emotional turbulence of gargantuan proportions and gliding on epicness all the way into the deepest recesses of our hearts, it imprints there, indefinitely.

I think I’m still processing this book. If I thought that the character development, world building, and political intrigue was good in The First Spark, I was absolutely blown away by how well-executed these aspects were in Legacy of Flame. I seriously cannot tell you how many times I just had to sit back and think about how perfectly a character’s arc was set up.
Speaking of characters—truly a standout in the story. In both TFS and LoF, the characters have such strong arcs that I feel like I could go on about them forever. Moss does a fantastic job setting up internal conflict and bringing it to the forefront when it is most impactful in the story. And while the characters are all so, so good and I know I’m not supposed to choose favorites…I don’t think I’ll get over Kalie. Her transformation and the choices she had to make in this book were amazing and I really couldn’t get enough of her.
The world building was also so interesting! The political intrigue in this installment was ramped up to a ten. If you like that in a story—which I do—then LoF is 100% worth your time. There were so many moments that I just had to sit in awe of Moss’s genius when it came to all the political maneuverings of her characters. There is also some new lore that we get to learn about in this book that was fascinating. I don’t know that I was smart enough to understand all of it, but I can definitely appreciate all the thought and planning put into it.
If you liked The First Spark, you will LOVE Legacy of Flame. It is a wonderful sequel that only further excites me to see what happens next in the series.
CONTENT GUIDE*
Romance: A few moments with descriptive kissing, a fade-to-black scene, a scene with strippers present (but nothing descriptive), multiple innuendoes, a same-sex relationship briefly mentioned, and an unmarried couple have a baby together.
Language: Language in semi-frequent, with 40 uses of sh*t and 9 uses of the F-bomb.
Violence: Somewhat descriptive violence is present—more than your average Star Wars film. Multiple discussions of characters being tortured, but nothing particularly descriptive. It is stated that women are taken advantage of in prisons, but it is not described more than that.

If I had to describe this book in two words, they'd be: BEAUTIFULLY BRUTAL.
I haven't been so emotionally impacted by a book since I read Heir of Fire and House of Earth and Blood (nearly three years ago). I'm genuinely in awe of Mallory's writing style, characters, and story-telling. I have so much to say, but since this book hasn't released yet, I'm going to do my best to not spoil anything and keep my review to a minimum...
Plot: Legacy of Flame is the perfect blend of light and dark moments. One thing I hate is when books romanticize war. War is dark and ugly, and I love how Mallory chose to showcase that, even if it did break my heart at times. I could see each characters' perspective clearly, and the choices they made weren't about "good vs evil" but rather "lesser evil vs worse evil". None of our main protagonists were in the right, but they weren't in the wrong either. They're all just trying to make the most out of a terrible situation and save the people they love. They're flawed, and they've all made mistakes, but that just makes me love them all the more.
Characters: First off, I'd just like to reaffirm my obsession with Mylis and Ariah. They are my number one duo in this series, and if they don't have a happily-ever-after by the time the dust settles, I'm genuinely going to riot 😭 My heart breaks for them, and for Kalie and Zane. The way the dynamic between these four characters changed absolutely gutted me, and I NEED to see how things between them progress in Book Three.
I wish I could say that Mira's quest was a nice break from the pain... but it wasn't. (Thank you Mallory for absolutely obliterating my heart). 🥲 I will say though that I greatly enjoyed the development/evolution of her character! Her whole arc reminds me so much of Aelin's in Heir of Fire, and I LOVE IT!! I can't wait to see what she does next... Hopefully it involves teaming up with a certain DIGS agent and taking down the Ultimate Boss Bitch, aka Command (iykyk).
All in all, if you love Throne of Glass and Star Wars Andor, then you NEED to read this series!! It will break you in the best possible way. The plot twists, the romance, the family secrets and betrayal, the magic and technology — all of it is a 10 out of 10! ❤️🔥

I had the honor of ARC reading this book! For the readers who wanted more of Mira after The First Spark’s ending, you’re in luck, but be careful what you wish for because WOW her story is a roller coaster. Even while balancing 3 POVs, Mallory managed to make each and every subplot super intriguing while tying it all into the central plotline of the galactic war.
Kalie’s inner conflicts as a privileged and sheltered member of royalty was pulled off so well. Her plans go sideways a lot, and she’s constantly switching sides between whether to do the tactical thing or the right thing. She’s the definition of morally gray, and Mallory doesn’t shy away from the ugly conversations that stem from her pursuit of power and what she views as justice.
I did lose track every now and then of who was who when we got introduced to Mira’s backstory, but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the rich world building and insane plot twists that came with Mira’s journey! I’m also SO excited to get more of Mylis and Ri’s journey in the future. Their rage felt just as real as their will to live despite everything they endured. Ri is a force of nature and I already know she’ll change the world (or multiple!). I was always rooting for her!
The ending absolutely tore me apart. I won’t spoil it but I will say that Zane’s got a lot of hardships ahead of him. As someone who’s had on and off problems with my hands, Zane’s struggles, fears, and frustrations were so relatable and you can tell how much care Mallory put into researching his experience. Overall she put so much love and care into creating a raw and original story—there are tough conversations, messy moments, and tropes that get turned upside down.
Anyway I rarely yap but the fact that I’m rambling so much about this book shows that you need to read it ASAP!! Congrats to Mallory on another fantastic book and I cannot wait for more of this epic world! :)

What a way to write a sequel. This book starts with action and ends with action while also giving you a perfect mix of downtime to fully process what’s going on. You jump right in with Mira’s pov as she tries to unravel the secrets of her past. The book is filled with satisfying twists that will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.
If the plot is what reels you in, the characters are what make you stay. The dichotomy between Kalie and Duchissa Kalista—who she wants to be VS who she needs to be—is so beautifully written. I love how this book doesn’t shy away from the “monster” you must become in order to rule. Her relationship with Ariah is so heartbreaking yet it portrays this so well. This book also made me love Zane even more. It truly shows how far he’s willing to go to save his friends. His character is just written so well. And then there’s Mira. I love how this book really dives into her character. I don’t want to spoil too much but I will say that the poor woman needs a break.
If I had enough free time, I would’ve finished this book in one sitting. I can’t wait to see where Mallory takes these characters next!

Legacy of Flame is such a satisfying sequel. Mallory does an amazing job continuing the story from book one while also expanding the world, raising the stakes, and giving one of the secondary characters a much more more emotionally layered role.
I especially loved the way this book shifts into a more epic fantasy feeling (you know I love an epic fantasy). There are flame powers, portals, dangerous secrets, surprising reveals, and a sense of destiny unfolding. Mira’s storyline surprised me in all the best ways... I thought I knew where things were going, and then the story took turns I didn’t expect at all!
The romance between Kalie and Zane is also really sweet, and a separation between the main characters added tension to the story without taking away from the emotional connection between them. The whole book has a strong blend of adventure, magic, danger, and heart.
And that ending? Rude... I definitely need the next book now! 🤣 🔥🔥🔥

I started this book and literally couldn't put it down because the plot was so good and the action never stopped. In addition to Kalie and Zane, we also get Mira's POV and her story adds a really interesting layer to the overall plot. Honestly, this book made me feel all my feelings. Every single characters actions, motivations, and inner monologues were so complex which made the stakes even higher. I think everyone went through something traumatic and I feel for all of them so much.
The action scenes were well written and full of plot twists and betrayals that had me as shocked as the characters were. I am seriously going to need book 3 asap because that cliff hanger was crazy and left me needing more immediately.

Mallory Moss 100% outdid herself with sequel to her NA science-fantasy. The stakes are higher, the secrets run deeper, and the characters are faced with new and impossible challenges that will have you wanting to throw the book (or your kindle) across the room... in a good way! Definitely check out Mallory's website for content guidelines, as this book is more intense than the first (though still closed-door). I'm continually blown away by this author and cannot wait to read what comes next. Book 3 can't come soon enough!

Closed door, though maybe a level three from the writing gals, lots of language and violence so not industry clean. Moss has content advisory on her website for those who are on the fence. It helped me a ton!
Such a fast paced story, I did not know which way to turn! So much was happening and wow!! It was all so exciting 😍 Kalie faced so many hard things and it was amazing to see her character respond. My heart at the end 😭

An incredible sequel to The First Spark! It continues the story of Kalie, Zane and Mira as they navigate the dangerous world post-book one. For a long book, it is fast-paced and action-packed, and very hard to put down. My heart broke too many times for the characters—Mallory Moss pulls no punches where her characters are concerned. The ending is very much a cliffhanger, so be prepared for heartache for now while you wait for the next one! I await the next book impatiently!!

4.5 ⭐ It took me a little bit to remember some of the characters but after that this was a true rollercoaster ride. I am honestly in awe of Mallory and her ability to get a 157,000 word book out with everything else she is doing and I can't wait for more. Definitely a must read.
