When given the chance to know her, he realizes that the life he's been living for fifteen years has led him in the wrong direction. Demi had my heart fighting with my mind the entire time 😩. I understood him… but I also wanted to shake him. That internal tug-of-war made him feel real, flawed, and layered. And then there’s Charlie whew. She is his complete opposite in the best way. Their differences are exactly what make their connection so compelling.

What I loved most is how Charlie challenges Demi. She doesn’t fold, doesn’t soften herself to make him comfortable, and forces him to confront parts of himself he’d rather avoid. Watching that dynamic unfold kept me glued to the pages.

Emotional, thoughtful, and addictive this book sets the tone perfectly for the series, and I’m already ready for what’s next. 💔🖤

This story was toxic, yet I wanted to see where it went. It started off slow, then immediately picked up. Charlie who is only 24 with the world ahead of her, finds herself in love with Demi. She learns that Demi is a web of lies, lust, and deceit but they become soul tied pretty quickly, making poor decisions over and over. Both have gone through traumatic experiences when it comes to their childhood and although that’s no excuse for their poor decisions, it gives us insight. Nothing built on shaky grounds will turn out solid.

It reminds me of other Ashley Antoinette’s work, (Morgan and Messiah)

I was rooting for you—we were all rooting for you, Demi. Talk about too good to be true. I understand being hurt, but Lauren definitely did a little too much. And Stassi… what kind of stepsister are you? Overall, this was a great read. On to part two!

This book kept me engaged from beginning to end! The character development was superb! Both Demi and Charlie were so complex. Complete opposites, but still a seemingly perfect match. The way Demi was able to overcome some of his behavioral complexities to be in her space was powerful. Charlie was a damsel in distress that needed but didn’t want saving. Despite her pushback, she needed her opposite to ground her.

Charlie’s past trauma was addressed, but not drawn out in words. However, her actions proved that she was still working through everything. She was very emotional and acted on impulse, all while needing to feel accepted. I liked that Charlie was self-aware enough to know that she needed to work on herself, and there could be no future with Demi until he addresses his family issues.

Birds in the Sky by Ashley Antoinette took me on a ride I was not prepared for. This story is toxic from every angle — the kind of toxic where you’re shaking your head, talking to the book, and still flipping pages because you have to know what happens next.

Demi and Lauren… Charlie and Demi… every dynamic was its own storm. DJ? Completely innocent in the middle of all this mess. And Demi — the way he moved like he had total control over everyone and everything had me conflicted the entire time. He built a web so tangled that even he couldn’t escape it, and watching him navigate the chaos he created left me unsure how to even feel about him.

Charlie’s trauma was heavy, and I found myself wishing her backstory had been explored with more depth. There was so much pain there, and I wanted to understand her more fully.

Even with all the toxicity, the intensity of the love — or what they thought was love — kept me locked in. I finished the book feeling torn, entertained, and emotionally drained in the best way. It’s one of those stories where you close the book and just sit there like… what did I just experience?

"This love is taking all of my energy" Do you remember that song? It must be the theme song in this book. There are so many high highs and low lows. This love story is tumultuous. It was a love neither of them saw coming and one he couldn't live without, despite Demitrius having an entirely separate life outside of the relationship and I'm not talking about work. The irony is, I know someone who experienced this in real life so Ashley did her big one bringing the details of this story to life! The ending was a full circle moment and I'm proud of the growth of both of the characters. I've already started book #2. Let's see where all this extraordinary love goes.

I finished this book and asked “am I toxic”? Lol
Wow- I finished this book in less than 24 hours (which I usually wouldn’t even allow myself to take the time to do). I loved every part of this story. It was truly a page turner. I loved the aspect of mental health being acknowledged and how that impacted so much of Demi’s character. Ashley made the chapters in this book feel so real and believable, like I was watching a movie. The pages did get heavy, I found myself crying from my own old hurts when Demi was rough and rejected Charlie in some scenes. I could go on and on, but long story short- great book and I can’t wait to read the second one.
