Friendship never dies; it is eternal
A story of friendship and tragedy, ‘Heartbound’ is the debut novel from new author Daniel Burton. From start to finish, ‘Heartbound’ will take you on a roller-coaster of emotions.
This book is something which comes across as very personal to the author and full of emotion which for some may make this a challenging read but for me this stood out as something different and unique. Congrats to the author on a well delivered piece that he can be very proud of
Heartbound tells the story of Davey Bardon, a 17-year old Sixth Form student who constantly battles his own mind, but when a friend visits him in the most unexpected way, he must deal with his guilt and loss in order to move on.
Daniel Burton’s writing is incredible descriptive and his use of imagery works so well to keep the story vivid, gripping and to bring Davey to life. As I read on with this book, I found myself identifying with little moments of his thoughts and feelings.
What I like most about Heartbound is that it’s a novel that delves into the issues that can affect anyone that has anxiety and that has had to deal with loss, pain and grief.
The strongest bond in the whole novel is the friendship that Davey has with Monica and Jasmine, and how his friendships continued to help him through his struggles.
This is a story with many surprises. Towards the end, the plot of the story had built up so much that I was completely clung to the story and would not put it down. In fact, during one of the final chapters my eyes started to tear up, and felt victorious for Davey, Michelle and Monica but also felt upset for them, because of the anguish and pain they had to deal with.
Notable Quotes: “The bond of friendship will never break. It only gets stronger. Jasmine Juliet taught me that.”
“You did this,” the demonic voices start up again, even louder and more odious than before. No matter how vigorously I protest my innocence they are unrelenting, not even stopping for breath.”
Heartbound is a fantastic story about loss, friendship, guilt, acceptance, battling demons of the human mind, and finally facing them head on, in order to confront them.
Young adults will love this book, especially if you loved ‘Looking for Alaska’ by John Green or ‘Lovely, Dark and Deep’ by Amy McNamara, you will definitely enjoy reading this novel.
I absolutely loved this book. It took a happy, carefree 17 year-old with exam stress that I could relate to entirely, and turned his life upside down. What makes Heartbound truly remarkable, however, was that tragedy didn't make Davey any less real, or any harder to identify with. I have never gone through anything remotely like Davey had to cope with, but still found myself understanding how he was feeling because it had been written so eloquently and from such a human perspective. The book identifies that having depression or anxiety doesn't mean that everything in life is awful and there are never any moments of light. Davey finds himself having a lighthearted moment, which makes it even harder when the darkness descends, or even causes it to darken through his guilt at not feeling perpetually miserable. Through everything, Davey's friends are there for him, in whatever way they can be, but without expecting him to act a certain way or cope with things in the manner of their choosing. I particularly like the way the book jumps between past and present, as I think you get a better sense of Davey's feelings and the relationships he has with each of his friends. I would definitely recommend Heartbound to anyone who would listen.
