Resisting Blue: A Stalker. A Therapist. A Morally Gray Romance.

Rate this book
From International bestselling author Maggie Cole comes a morally gray psychological romance where boundaries are temptation, ethics are foreplay, and a dangerously perceptive woman sets her stalker sights on her therapist.

My parents made me see a therapist for stalking.

They thought Dr. Red Mercer would cure me. They assumed he would teach me restraint, discipline, and distance. What they didn’t count on was the way his gaze lingers too long, like he’s undressing the truth instead of treating it. Or how his voice tightens every time I say exactly what I’m thinking.

He says boundaries. I hear an invitation.

He says ethics. I see a man begging not to want me.

I’m not spiraling. I’m precise. I know where he draws the line and exactly how to leap over it.

Red calls my fixation a disorder.

I call it fate already in motion.

This is my version of the sessions.

And no matter how hard he fights it, I’ll strip away his control until Dr. Red Mercer admits what we both know.

He was never meant to resist me.

Resisting Blue is book one of the Beautiful Delusions Duet. This book contains self-harm. See Authors Note inside the book for trigger warnings.

Loved this story. Literally couldn’t put it down. This story follows Blu Ivanov, a side character in Maggie’s The Underworld trilogy. The tension in this book was top notch. I can’t wait to read Chasing Red.

Now this was a book that left me with my jaw permanently on the floor with the twists and turns it takes.

Our FMC Blue Ivanov is the daughter of Skylar and Adrian Ivanov (Mafia Wars - you do not need to read their book to understand their daughter’s story). I read Maggies Underworld series prior to this and in the final book we caught a glimpse of Blue and her obsessive behaviour towards Brax. From that moment my interest was piqued with this character and I wanted her to be explored further.

In the beginning of this book we are met with the same scene from the underworld series in which Blue’s must attend a therapist. Our FMC is feisty, cunning and is very lenient to manipulation to get her way. Personally I don’t think Dr Mercer was ready for the women who walked through his doors. Initially he understands her behaviour and deep down beneath the surface he hears his own call to her but he desperately tries to maintain that professional boundary.

It’s no surprise that Blues attention and obsession deviates from Brax to Dr Mercer. She is a FMC that definitely leaves an impression on characters and readers a like and I am desperate to find out where Blue and Red’s story goes in part two.

Please note that the author does set out her TWs for this book in the beginning and these are not to be taken lightly.

Thank you to the author who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭

I am fully invested in this duet's storyline. The FMC, Blue Ivanov, is just a cunning as her father's character from Vicious Protector that was Adrian Ivanov and Skylar's story from Mafia Wars. (You do not need to read their story, the storylines are completely different, and genre is not the same, there is no overlapping connection besides it's her family)

It's not often that the FMC character overshadows an MMC when I read. Usually, I want more from the MMC POV but with this one I feel like Blue is a character that is leaving a long last impression and I had realized this quickly into book one of this duet.

I love that you get to see how Blue's mind works with her knowingly stalking, manipulating situations and still able to be feisty and still bring forth a strong sense of herself awareness.

Dr. Red Mercer has a grasp of the situation but is in no way prepared for what walks through his door on their first meeting. He sees all her internal battles, manipulation, boundary crossing and continues to bring her in for more sessions while fighting internally if he can give her to another therapist knowing she crosses every boundary, line and professional and personal line he sets in place.

I will say this is a slower burn with buildup to show the evolving relationship twist and turn from the professional to personal levels. Blue has no care for his steadfast boundaries she wants the man behind the desk, in the chair while he tries to help her.

Beware the author lists a content warning for a reason if you have issues with reading certain material please review the list. A reader's mental health is more important. This book has Age Gap (MMC 40, FFM 25) Therapist/Patient, Mental Disorder, Morally Grey, Stalker

Okay but WHY did this book sneak up on me like that?? 👀

I went in expecting to like it (because hi, it’s Maggie Cole 💁🏻‍♀️), but came out fully invested, slightly unhinged, and needing answers immediately. Blue and Red?? Toxic… but also not?? Like excuse me while I try to process the emotional whiplash because I could NOT predict what was coming next.

The character development? Chef’s kiss. The tension? Delicious. My patience waiting for the next book? Nonexistent.

Respectfully… I need the next one ASAP because I am not okay 😌📚

honestly I’ve read a lot of dark and depraved books, but this one… truly comes out on top for all the therapist x patient books I’ve read. I love the switching of gender roles as usually it’s the fmc who’s the therapist and the mmc who’s the obsessed psychopath. But I just loved watching Red struggle and go through internal panic every time Blue manages to surprise him with another chaotic trick. The plot was immaculate, very well paced and so intense from start to finish. Every page was packed with emotion, intensity and a whole lot of crazy. Blue’s point of view was just soo interesting to read because of the constant jumps in thoughts, her crazy delusions, and just the overall unorganised chaos of it. And Red was adorable, he’s a guy who likes being in control and doesn’t know what to do when Blue storms in and messes up his entire life. Their chemistry is just amazing, and their bond is taboo and just SLIGHTLY toxic but I loved it so much. The book ended on a diabolical cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next one, I give this a 5/5

Great first chapter of Blue and Red’s story. Blue pushes Red’s boundaries professionally and personally which ultimately leads to a major cliff hanger leading to book 2.

Does have self harm triggers, obsession and manipulation are key topics addressed throughout the story.

I do wish there was more action involved but loved it from the very start.

Ok so this book was a bit different from others that Maggie has written. But I absolutely loved it. I know in Bride by Ritual, when he first meet Blue I knew I needed to know her story. And this one dove into her perfectly. I loved getting such a different FMC. And Red. He tried so hard but was no match.. definitely ready for the next book..

⏳Age Gap
🖤Psychological Slow Burn
⏳Straight-Laced MMC → Morally Gray
🖤She Falls First • He Falls Harder
⏳Unhinged Stalker FMC (Sympathetic)

Maggie Cole does it again!!🖤⏳

Having already read her Underworld series, and freaking loved it by the way, I got a small taste of Blue towards the end of the last book Bride by Ritual and her intense, obsessive fixation on Brax…WOW!…and I’ve been waiting for her story ever since. So getting a full duet centered on her? Absolutely worth it and I had the hardest time setting this book down!!

What starts as therapy quickly spirals into something far more consuming… something neither of them should want but can’t stay away from.it’s completely unhealthy fixation on both their parts but I’m completely here for it! Bring on all the red flags please!

Blue’s obsession is completely unhinged in the best way.and that fine line of manipulation and love is definitely tested. And Red? Also know as Dr. Mercer…He tries to resist, honestly he really does but something pulls him in even when he knows he’s being manipulated.

The tension? The push and pull? Completely addictive.
This story is dark, messy, and packed with raw passion wanting…the kind that keeps you turning pages even when you know you probably shouldn’t.

And that ending?!
Dr. Mercer trying to do the “right thing” while knowing neither of them is truly walking away? I’m unwell and
I cannot wait to dive into Chasing Red!

***Definitely check those trigger warnings, because this is not a light read. ***

Huge thank you to Maggie Cole!

Holy moly! I don’t think I’ve ever read, errr listened to, a book with a more unhinged FMC. It truly shows how quickly someone with delusions can change their fixations. If you’ve read Bride by Ritual, you had a glimpse of Blue Ivanov (Adrian and Skylar’s daughter). She’s been fixated on Brax since she was 16.

Her parents were completely unaware of how deep her fixation ran. It wasn’t just a schoolgirl crush. It also lead to moments of self harm. They had no idea until a joint counseling session with their daughter and her therapist. After Blue’s first visit with Dr. Mercer, her fixation shifted to him. Not only is her therapist, he’s 15 years older than she is (5 years older than Brax, which Adrian also felt was too old for her, especially at 16!).

During the family session, Adrian behaves as one would suspect: he felt attacked as a “bad” parent, suspicious as to why his daughter needed therapy, “no way does MY child need medication”, and even looks at the interactions between Red and Blue with practiced eye of a father who is in the Russian mob.

Blue continues to push boundaries and Red continues to state they need them. They both know he won’t be able to uphold them.

The audiobook was perfection! Book 2 of the duet is coming out in a few days. Man, do I ever appreciate an author releasing books with a cliffhanger within a week of each other.

4.5

This follows right after the underworld series, and even though Blue is definitely not involved in anything that happens in that series, for a better understanding of the character is better to read those books first.

She is obsessed with Brax, but is completely one-sided, Brax has never give her any sort of hint that he is interested in her, he is actually in love with someone else and has never given into Blue's affection, he is actually scared of her and concerned of her behavior, so he talks to her parents, who send her to therapy, where she meets Dr. Red Mercer, and a new obsession begins.

Red tries to be professional, but he can't resist Blue, he is immediately captivated by her, and pretty soon ends up caught in her web and her games. He is attracted to her, and he crosses every line with her, there's a lot of push and pull, because he knows that giving into her is wrong, but he really can't help himself. Red is as into Blue, as she is into him, he just can't be with her because of the age gap and the professional repercussions.

I really loved this story, Blue is unhinged and morally gray, I love how she managed to caught Red, and their relationship is full of tension. I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm always a sucker for a forbidden age gap relationship, and this one hits all the marks.

Resisting Blue is a stalker, therapist romance where she is the stalker. I flew through this.
I love Blue. She is so calculating and manipulative. Blue's obsession started with Brax, but when he confronted her and her parents about her behavior and indicated that she needed help, they realize that he may be right and find her a therapist. Dr. Mercer meets her and realizes what she is and how she intends to play the game right from the beginning. He sees right through her and tries to set boundaries with her. But if there's one thing about Blue, it's that she will break down all boundaries. Her obsession and fixation switches from Brax to Dr. Mercer. And while he tries to hang in as long as he can and fight temptation, Blue does not let up. He knows that ethically, what they are doing is wrong. The question is, does he go against everything he promises Blue and put an end to things, or, does he keep doing what they're doing and risk everything? Either way, he loses. And once her family finds out, will her father have him killed?
I loved the tension and suspense. But more than that, I love how unhinged Blue is! Honestly, that scene with her under his desk while he was with a patient had me on edge... I thought for sure they were caught and they'd have to explain.
This one ended on a cliffhanger and I am sat for book 2.

First, I want to say: WHAT?!! Holy cliffhanger, Batman!!! I am 100% invested in BOTH Blue and Red. Maggie does a phenomenal job of making you want to shake some sense into Blue at every turn, yet in the very next minute, you want to hug her and tell her everything will be ok. Blue is most definitely delulu, and the trigger ones are legit, so if you have triggers, please read Maggie's TWs.

Blue's character development throughout this book is phenomenal. You are about to experience the most roller coaster of emotions you can imagine!! That being said, you'll never find yourself rooting for someone as much as you're rooting for Blue.

Now, my dear Red... he really tries so hard to maintain his boundaries in a professional way, but he has met his match in every way possible with Blue. Boundaries are obliterated, and you will wonder how it will possibly work out! Red's struggle with his own feelings is equally as captivating as watching Blue's chaos.

There are so many crossovers with characters from the Underworld and Mafia Wars, you won't be disappointed. Blue is all the complex and chaotic parts of both Skylar and Adrian in one delicious character! I can't wait for the conclusion of this duet!!!

Utterly captivating, dark, intense and completely addictive.

Blue is completely unhinged in the best way; matter-of-fact and casual about the most inappropriate things, even in her own inner monologue, which makes her hilarious while also keeping the tension sky high. Her therapy sessions exploring attachment trauma add real psychological depth and her dynamic with Dr. Red Mercer is absolutely electric, full of power, restraint and temptation. The push and pull between them is constant and addictive.

The audiobook is brilliantly done, with dual narration, male voices for the male characters and female for the female characters. The female narrator in particular captures Blue perfectly; her breathy delivery really brings her character to life and makes the experience even more immersive.

What really sets this apart is how it blends dark romance with psychological insight. You’re not just watching the story unfold, you’re inside it, understanding the motivations, the trauma, and the tension driving every interaction.

I was completely hooked from start to finish, laughing at Blue’s brazen inner thoughts one minute and fully invested in the intensity the next. The ending left me on a cliffhanger and I immediately need the next book.

Completely addictive!

Resisting Blue by Maggie Cole delivers a compelling mix of tension, emotion, and undeniable chemistry that keeps you hooked from the very first chapter. Blue is the kind of character you want to resist—but absolutely can’t. The push-and-pull dynamic is written so well, with just the right balance of angst and vulnerability. The emotional depth really stood out to me, especially as the characters navigated their pasts and tried to protect their hearts.

The chemistry? Off the charts. 🔥 Maggie Cole knows how to build slow-burning tension and then deliver when it matters. I found myself completely invested in their journey, rooting for them even when things felt messy and complicated.

What I appreciated most was how real the characters felt. Their struggles, decisions, and growth didn’t feel forced—they felt authentic and relatable. The pacing kept me engaged, and I had a hard time putting it down. If you love...emotionally charged romance, strong, complex characters, tension-filled relationships with satisfying payoff… this one is definitely worth picking up. There is a cliff-hanger and I cannot WAIT for Chasing Red now!! I NEED to know what happens!!!

Resisting Blue is book one in the Beautiful Delusions duet and is the story of Red and Blue. This is a forbidden, age gap, patient/therapist, morally grey, stalker romance. There are some sensitive topics addressed in this duet so please check your content warnings prior to starting these books.

Blue is a calculating, manipulative stalker who is sent to see Red for therapy and treatment by her parents. Previously she had been fixated on Brax but after meeting Red, her fixation and obsession move to him. Even though Red attempts to keep professional and steadfast boundaries, Blue wants him and will do anything to have him. As much as Red attempts to stand his ground and hold his boundaries with Blue, he knows he will ultimately fail and while they know what they are doing is forbidden, it will not stop them from pursing one another.

Blue is completely unhinged and will go to any length for her obsession. This is a slow burn but when it ignites…damn! The cliffhanger will leave you wanting but luckily the second book is not far behind. I received an advanced copy of this book and am leaving an honest review as a show of my appreciation.

WOW, just WOW!!! Maggie Cole is amazing and consistently and constantly bringing us these amazing stories and characters that we have no choice but to love.

This is the story of Blue Ivanov and Dr. Red Mercer. Now if you read the Underworld series you’ve already met Blue and her obsession she had with Brax. Said obsession has lead her parents to get her help with a therapist Dr. Mercer.

This is where the fun begins, Blue is a little unhinged and turns her obsession to Dr. Mercer, who does everything in his power to resist the temptation of Blue. Boundaries are built, then slowly those boundaries fall. The chemistry between Blue and Red is undeniable, and ethics are destroyed.

If you love a dark obsession romance, a good age gap, psychological stalker(Blue), forbidden therapist then this duet is for you. Now keep in mind that this might not be for everyone as it touches some sensitive topics like mental illness, self harm and stalking. Can’t wait to read what happens next between Blue and Red in the next book Chasing Red.

PSYCHOLOGICAL POWERPLAYS

'It's a psychological mess wrapped in polite conversation and clinical language.' - Blue Ivanov.

I read the author's note at the beginning of this book and felt the intrigue grow. This was an absolute head spin for a five star read. I've read other brain melt type books but Maggie Cole has surged to the head of the class with this story. I was completely engrossed in the powerplays from Blue, watching Red slowly unravel in her grasp and just waiting for the inevitable train wreck that would come from such an unethical and taboo encounter. Reading all the ticks and nuances for each of the characters was written with an air of doom and as the reader I couldn't help but fall with them. The writing was engaging, specifically enthralling and immersive in the dialogue and interactions. I don't feel my review has done this book justice, all I know is I thoroughly enjoyed and could not resist Blue if I wanted to and will be Chasing Red as soon as its released.

Note: This is book 1 of a duet so consider this your CLIFFHANGER warning!!!
Listen... Blue is unstable. That's a fact. And her behavior is, truthfully, scary, at times.
And I am so here for it!!
As an avid reader of Maggie Cole's books, I loved seeing Blue in Brax's story, but didn't realize how much more to her there is until she got her own duet. Personally, I love a forbidden relationship so this therapist x patient story is everything I want. And Blue's stalker tendencies? Yes please!!
Dr. Red Mercer is a great MMC - smart, compassionate, hot - attempting to do the right thing while fighting temptation... oh, but he's absolutely failing at resisting!!
Oh gurrl, throw your ethics out the window for this ride and enjoy the journey because everything about this story was unexpected; every twist, I didn't see any of it coming.

Thank you for gifting me an advanced reader copy. Review reflective of my personal opinions

This is the first part of this new duet, and what a complex and thought-provoking journey this is!
Blue is a force of nature, and she is chaotic, dark, obsessed, and unforgettable, and her parents send her to see therapist Dr Red Mercer for her stalking tendencies. Together boundaries are tested and lines become blurred.
This story ends with a jaw dropping cliffhanger, and I cannot wait to read the conclusion.
Be aware of the trigger warnings due to sensitive content!
This is a well written action packed, dark, raw, gritty, and powerful, slow burn, which has family, emotions, tension, addiction, complex characters, obsession, challenges, morally gray, boundaries, an age gap, and intense chemistry, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, haunting, twisted, and unpredictable, thrilling dark romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

This is a difficult read. Perhaps more so because I am a therapist, I just found myself disgusted by Red's inability to hold boundaries. Its so easy to see how badly Blue needs that in her life. And i do acknowledge that this was the point of the book, the toxic and ethically grey therapeutic treatment of Blue by Red was the moral to the story, and yet I dont know if i could say i liked it or not. I cringed so many times at Red's caving, and so many times at Blue's destructive behaviour and manipulation. Her behaviour speaks to such big things going on for her but it was all just messy and hard to read, he was causing her harm.
All that to say, this was not my favourite. We all have things that give us the ick and this boundary crossing was an ick for me. I can't say there werent parts of this book I didn't enjoy. And ill read the conclusion. I do enjoy Maggie's writing and I am keen to finish this series.

Holy WOW! Like my mind is blown at how scary and good this writing was for getting into the mind of Blue. It was downright terrifying at times to see how this character worked!! I absolutely love the patient/ psych doc trope and the way this story developed was disturbing in all the best ways. Please read your triggers as Maggie does tell all and prepares you as best she can but I can promise if those don’t bother you then buckle up and be ready to absolutely devour this book!

I felt like I was the one being manipulated at times 😂 I will say it would be very beneficial to read The Underworld series before this, especially the third book, however you can absolutely read this as a stand alone, just know the beginning stems from Blue’s connection to another character from that series.

I absolutely loved everything about this and am really excited for the next book!

Read TWs so that you can read at your comfort level.

If the only thing I mention is that Blue Ivanov is delulu, that would sum up the entirety of this first half of a duet. She is stalking a married man that became so out of control, that her parents set up appointments for her to see Dr. Red Mercer. The minute she walks into his office, he knows he is so out of his depth and he is in trouble of losing his licensure if he doesn't keep his professional boundaries in place.

I enjoyed the dual POV; however, I had to stop so many times to shake my head because I didn't want Blue's perverted thoughts, manipulation tactics, and unreal grasp of reality to take root in my brain.

The cliffhanger just whets your appetite for the rest of the story. I'm (im)patiently but that just gives me time to re-read Resisting Blue.

Blue needs to claim power in whichever way that she can and that includes her one-sided obsession with another man. It is for this reason that she finds herself a patient of Dr. Mercer’s who is tasked with trying to help her mitigate the compulsive sides of her personality only for her to change direction to him.

Red is a therapist who believes he knows what to expect when it comes to his new patient, but he couldn’t have been more wrong. She is tempting in ways he never expected and the solid division that should be between them begin to get blurred that is rocking both their worlds.

The depth of these characters is captivating and the resolve of Blue at odds with the struggle that Red is feelings between his personal feelings and his professional responsibilities that leaves us wanting more.

I thought Bride by Initiation was my favorite book by Maggie Cole, but we have a new favorite!
Blue was introduced in Bride by Ritual and I just wanted to know more about her, she is so crazy and obsessive and at times I shook my head going "Blue!!". Then we have her psychologist, Dr. Red Mercer who I also shook my head at saying "Red!". Their relationship/non-relationship was so nutty but yet addictive, both of the MCs strive for control and some kind of lead role but they let the other think they have the upper hand.

I absolutely loved how he was able to talk her down when she was clearly suffering from an issue and the fact she called him to help out.
Immediately starting book 2

The first of the duet and holy moly was this amazing!!! Ok, let's start off with this is still in that little world that Maggie Cole created. Blue is the daughter of Adrian and Skylar from the Mafia Wars series, now more recent we saw a bit of Blue in the third of The Underworld series, Brax and Valentina's story. The events from that book are why Blue has to seek help, Adrian and Skylar's idea. It's a bit of a web, but if you are caught up with all the stories then you won't be lost. I will say, that this was a freaking great story, pulls the reader right in and has them hanging to see just how more messed up things can become.... and do they ever. Not spoiling anything but I am diving right into the second part of this duet as soon as I finish typing this. So, I give this 5 huge stars.

This book has TW and I urge you to read these. It is taboo, it is dark, it does cross boundaries. And it's amazing! Blue is obsessive. Once she latches on to something she goes at it full bore. But she also has trouble regulating her emotions and uses harmful methods to feel as if she has control. Which leads her to seeing Dr. Red Mercer. He knows immediately she's manipulative. Nevertheless he's attracted to her, but knows it crosses ethical boundaries. The character develop in this book is outstanding and even if my jaw was on the floor, I was still rooting for them both. This book does end on a cliffhanger, but the second book is out and you can just jump right to it. There is so much in this story I totally understand why the story needs to be divided into two books. So go, read and be shocked, titillated and enjoy.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Blue and Red. Blue is a girl who loves to have her way and does it with manipulation. She is also cunning and feisty. She also had the tendency to fixate on someone and then she turns into a stalker. So off to therapy she has to go. Here she meets Dr. Mercer. He is the therapist and a man who was probably not prepared for Blue to walk through his door. Try as he many though, he does understand why she behaves the way she does, but his soul calls to her and soon the table turns into her fixating on him and he on her. There are so many twists and turns in this book that it really keeps you on your toes. I loved every second of it and can't wait to have the next book in my hands.

I literally stayed up all night reading this. I could not put it down. It was completely addictive.

Blue had my mind spinning the entire time, and her dynamic with Red is…intriguing? Compelling? I don’t even know the exact word, but it pulls you in and keeps you there. The push and pull between them is intense, messy, and so charged.

I love how Maggie writes emotions. You’re not just watching it happen, you’re in both of their heads, feeling everything as it unfolds. It never feels one-sided either, which I really liked because you understand both of them, even when they’re making questionable decisions.

And that teaser at the end… yeah, I’m already impatient for Chasing Red. I know I’m going to fly through that one too.
