From his morally superior perch, life is great for Cal Dormer.

Cal is a model employee with Fenix Corporation. From his office on Eridia-4, the central space station of Fenix’s operations, he works to convince new Coalition planets to accept the corporation’s assistance.

But when he meets a non-human with a strange motivation to bring Fenix down, he’s thrown into a chaotic sequence of events that begin to unravel his beliefs bit by bit. From the sparkling spires of Eridia-4 to the lush gardens of Eden, Cal and his companion uncover a secret so shocking that inaction would doom entire worlds.

DNF. Well, I did finish, just not in a linear manner. It's ponderous. It rambles. It's utterly derivative. The entire first two or three chapters could be cut because the book literally starts over, with exposition, like we didn't just read it.

I jumped to the middle and you know what? I wasn't lost. The reason I wasn't lost is because with very little effort, you can predict everything. I jumped back to see if I was right about what made the main character change. I was. I jumped ahead. Yup, that's about where we should be in a book following a template while padding it's word count. Jump to the end? You betcha. Surprise! Still not lost, because we've seen this movie before.

Moreover, this is a book in desperate need of an editor. That won't fix the author's over-reliance on manufactured jargon and language. which, by the way, is clunky and awkward at best. It's like Treknobabble but an AI translated it through 13 languages first.

There are far better space opera, space marine-turned-rebel, hero's journey books to read. Find any one of them and read that instead.

This story has a lot of actions and events happening.

The story is creative and unique.

To me personally, it has potential but I think there needs to be more editing done. For example it’s too repetitive.

Eden Vertex was a really interesting read and definitely kept me turning the pages. The world Ty Carlson created feels big and layered, and it is clear a lot of thought went into the setting and the larger story behind everything that is happening. The concept itself is strong and unique enough to stand out from a lot of other books in the same genre. I especially enjoyed the darker tone and the sense that there is always something bigger going on beneath the surface.

One of the stronger parts of the book is the atmosphere. The author does a good job building tension and making certain moments feel intense or uneasy in a way that pulls you deeper into the story. Some of the characters are also very compelling and have personalities that make them feel distinct. There were several scenes that felt very cinematic and easy to picture.

That said, there are a few areas where the book could be even stronger. At times the pacing feels a little uneven. Some sections move very quickly while others slow down quite a bit with information or dialogue. A little tightening in those slower spots might help the story flow more smoothly. There were also moments where I wished certain characters had a bit more development or time to breathe so their motivations felt clearer.

Another small thing is that a bit more clarity in a few transitions or explanations could help readers stay fully grounded in what is happening. The ideas are strong, but occasionally they come at the reader quickly.

Overall though, Eden Vertex is a solid and creative story with a lot of potential and some very memorable moments. If you enjoy darker sci fi with layered worldbuilding and a sense of mystery, this book is definitely worth checking out. I would easily read more from this author in the future.

Ty Carlson knocks it out of the park with this first installment in his new sci-fi trilogy. I was lucky enough to come across Ty's other series right before the final installment released and I can easily say Ty Carlson has been only 1 of 3 authors to keep me coming back to read sci-fi novels. Eden Vertex delivers classic sci-fi vibes with modern storytelling with strong undertones of symbolism that the reader can relate to that goes on in every day societal life. The fight between what's legal and what's morally and ethically correct. Defending the less privileged when they are discriminated against, hunted, bullied, etc. Understanding other species, their way of life, their culture and perspectives, showing compassion and empathy, and finding the most unlikely of friends in the weirdest of places. Different alien species, intense action sequences, awesome space ships, tech, gadgets, etc. My girlfriend and I were/are Alpha Readers for this trilogy and we have had nothing but an amazing and fun time seeing where everything goes. Especially when you, the reader, gets to book 2.

Eden Vertex delivers a compelling entry into a universe that feels both expansive and unsettlingly familiar. At its core, the novel wrestles with power, control, and the quiet unraveling of belief. Following a protagonist (Cal) whose journey from loyal insider to questioning observer mirrors the reader’s own growing unease.

What stands out most is the thematic weight: corporate dominance cloaked in unity and order for the broader ‘good’, the emotional cost of truth and ignorance (blind or not), and the fragile line between progress and exploitation. These ideas aren’t just background they drive the story forward with purpose.

As the foundation of a larger series, EV succeeds in planting seeds and creating through lines, hinting at a much broader conflict that could unravel the galaxy and its foundational promise. The worlds feel lived-in, characters are layered, and the plot expands in bold directions.

This is a universe worth keeping an eye on.

Eden Vertex is a fun ride. Carlson built an exciting world and filled it with characters I care about. This one feels like "The Expanse" series in its space opera scope, but also gave me strong Harry Potter vibes with the character development. There's also a strong social justice theme that can be a little heavy handed at times, but still valid and appreciated. I'm certainly looking forward to the next one.

I was so fortunate to read this as an ARC and even though this isn’t typically a genre I’d read, I’m glad I took the chance and read it! It is a little disorganized at times, but I was able to follow it for the most part! Overall, it was a good book.

I have to say at the beginning of the book I was sceptical. After all I've never read a sci-fi novel and quiet frankly, I didn't think I'd enjoy it.
HOWEVER, after a few pages I got sucked right into it and didn't expect the twists and turns this story took.
The character development is world class and the story is intricate and gripping.
What a great experience.

I can't decide how to begin reviewing this. I went into this with excitement and was instantly given a headache. The story info dumps, draws out everything in unneeded or wanted detail that feels like artifical writing or a story that received no feedback beforehand. It was all repetitive, boring and I ended up skimming with annoyance to find it never stopped. I'm thrilled to get this out of my life... the opposite of what a good book is entirely.

The characters... I hated them all too. Flat, toxic and the kind of people I'd wrinkle my nose at and walk away from. So there was zero connection on any level. I want to say it's just me, not my cup of tea, but I don't think that's the case. If you want some good sci-fi look else where.
