Fang-favorite characters Spelldon Cauldronello and Kieran Valentine are starring in their scary first a multiverse adventure that includes glimpses into monstrous steampunk, pirate, and Wild West worlds, featuring alternate versions of popular Monster High characters. Spelldon is eek-vited to a once-in-an-unlifetime summer internship with the all-powerful guardian of the Boomuda Triangle, the place where all worlds are kept in balance. His boyfriend, Valentine, is defrighted for him, but he can’t help worrying about what the weeks apart will do to their relationship. What if Spelldon forgets him? What if the guardian is scary hot?! What if he falls into a wormhole?!?! So Valentine secretly follows Spelldon to the Boomuda Triangle to make sure no shenanigans happen and accidentally kind of unintentionally causes all the universes to rip apart and converge...oops! Spelldon and Valentine will have to overcome their insecurities, mend the rips, and find each other in every universe. Easy queasy!
I’ve never met Spelldon nor Val prior to this, so this is my first impression of them 😭🤍
Spelldon is v in his head, by the book type of Manster (not sure if that was the term I read) that suffers from miscommunication. I was more so interested in seeing Casta Fierce and Circe… 💅🏽 I’m just a girl 💅🏽
Val, on the other hand is insane. I feel like it would be easier if they just understood each other’s love language a bit more ‘cause Val obvi needs tons of words of affirmation and quality time… And physical touch lmfao.
I loved all the alt universes, and was so excited to see characters that I know and love. The reveal was not really a surprise, but I just loved the ending 🫶🏽
*2.5* I think this was a rocky start. I want to begin by saying that I’m so excited that Spelldon seems to be the focus of this story! I like Val too but we’ve definitely been seeing much of their story from his perspective, and as noted in the author interview at the back, Spelldon was a pretty undeveloped character until he started appearing in the comics. I do like where we start out with him here, and I was glad to see the conversation he has with his sister. I have been looking forward to getting a sense for how his sister’s stardom and success affects him. Val is the part of this that I really didn’t like. He’s whiny, he’s annoying, and his insecurities and irrationality feel a little out of place considering what’s already been established about their relationship? He came off kind of dumb and definitely overdramatic, more so than he has seemed in previous comic appearances. I also just wasn’t a fan of the art. I’m still trying to figure out what I don’t like about it. Maybe it’s too static? It could benefit from a better sense of movement. I wasn’t totally clear on much of the action that was supposed to be happening. I know I had my critiques, but I am looking forward to seeing how this story takes shape in future issues, and learning more about Spelldon.
I love these chaotic gays so much, and I'm so glad they got their own series! I like the story thus far and the ending is keeping me hooked. The artstyle is less my cup of tea (I like shading). But the cover art is gorgeous!
My son loves the Monster High series, and I really wanted to share that experience with him by reading this graphic novel together. There is something so special about being able to enjoy a book with your teenager especially when it involves a world and characters they already love. And honestly, I had just as much fun reading this one as he did!
The story follows Spelldon Cauldronello, who gets an incredible summer internship with the Guardian of the Boomuda Triangle, a magical place that keeps all the universes in balance. His boyfriend, Kieran Valentine, worries about being apart and what it could mean for their relationship, so he secretly follows Spelldon. Things quickly go off the rails when their actions cause the universes to collide! Suddenly, they must navigate alternate realities filled with monstrous steampunk adventures, pirates, Wild West versions of familiar characters, and plenty of chaos. Along the way, they have to work through their insecurities, repair the damage, and find their way back to each other.
One of my favorite things about this graphic novel was how inclusive it was. I loved seeing a story that embraces different identities and relationships while still delivering the fun, humor, and spooky charm that make Monster High so beloved. It also explores insecurities and relationships in a way that adds heart to all the supernatural chaos.
And the artwork was BEAUTIFUL! The illustrations were vibrant, expressive, and just as colorful as the show and movies. Every page felt like it belonged in the Monster High universe, and the visual storytelling made the whole adventure even more enjoyable.
The plot felt completely on brand, with its quirky humor, supernatural adventures, familiar characters, and wonderfully weird twists. I was entertained throughout, and sharing this story with my son made the experience even more meaningful.
Overall, this was such a fun read, both as a longtime fan of the brand's appeal and as a mom getting to share something special with her son. I would absolutely recommend Monster High: Boomuda Triangle to Monster High fans, graphic novel lovers, and anyone looking for a colorful, inclusive adventure with heart!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel! 🖤💜
i would say "putting the whitewashing aside" but honestly the impact on the entire story was fucked for me 😔 i just wont include my whole rant in this lmao
anyway apart from that, i didnt really like the style of the comic? it was fine and im not saying i could do better: im saying i expect better from a professional comic artist. some panels looked really expressionless and i couldnt tell what characters were feeling in certain moments.
but yayy casta appeared for two pages 🙏🙏 i wish she and spelldon had a more vulnerable setting to talk though, maybe at home over a home cooked meal? maybe with circe (i mean im not saying i just wanna see monster highs take on circe lmao but...)
the subtle character showcase of casta caring so deeply about her fans (not only with a friendly tone, but concern about the lighting of their pictures) was a really great touch and a shining example of what you can do nicely in 32 pages
anyway the story was good. rubs me the wrong way that a comic that does THAT is the one spelldon gets charcaterisation in, but im happy about it all the same.
i like that the map tearing was both their faults. that we're seeing pressured, unsure spelldon and i-dont-know-what-a-healthly-relationship-is valentine. i like that they will argue and be imperfect, and be honest and love. the prose read a little bit young for the topics to me, and i am young, but it was awesome anyway. the set up was nice, and the last panel the funniest thing ive ever seen lmao.
im am going to be honest, if they kept a the pride 2024's artist for this it would be a way better book in my mind. i feel a bit bad for hating so heavily but its on a moral level too. what the fuck monster high. who approved this?
regradless, i am SO so excited to see the next volumes. will spelldon meet an evil valentine? what will he do about it? will robecca (<3) show up in this steampunk universe? circe with other gods? will valentine have to confront the girls he hurt in the past?
Welcome to Monster High: Boomuda Triangle where the ghouls must save the universe from collapsing. Spelldon and Valentine would have to remain apart during the summer due to Spell's internship programme. However, Val does not want Spell to stay away for long. So he travels secretly to Boomuda with Spell where due to an argument they split and cause the universes to split and overlap. Now it's upto them to make amends before its too late.
The author has done a wonderful job at portraying the two protagonists. The execution of the story from the start till the end was smooth. I loved how the author portrayed their fears and anxieties with them being resolved by the end of the comic. Both the characters learned to overcome their fears and grew together. The story tells the reader that love is strong across the universe and dimensions and that one must believe in their abilities to become a better version of themselves.
The artists have done a wonderful job with the illustrations bringing them to un-life. The colours chosen looked scary flawsome and I felt the book really was a gift to the Monster High fans.
I would recommend this book to people aged 14 years old and above and also to the people who love Monster High, fantasy, and all the things creeperific.
Spelldon is the by the book type, so heavily in his own head that miscommunication keeps tripping him up, and when he landed a once in an unlifetime internship with the guardian of the Boomuda Triangle, I felt his excitement and his nerves. Valentine, his boofriend, is wonderfully unhinged, and his secret trip to follow Spelldon, accidentally ripping every universe apart, had me grinning. He clearly needs words of affirmation and quality time, and I wished they understood each other’s love languages sooner. The alternate universes were my favorite part, with steampunk, pirate, and Wild West versions of familiar Monster High faces, and I especially wanted more of Casta Fierce and Circe. The big reveal didn’t surprise me, but the ending won me over completely, and finding each other across every world made my heart swell.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
thank you to net galley for the arc! i haven't seen Kieran valentine since his 2010? movie with draculara. definitely, his character has shifted over the years. he used to be a lot more conniving. here, he was reduced to an overly attacked boyfriend. anyhow, i still read this in one setting and enjoyed seeing the fashion styles of the multiverses. i think it's great to have such outwardly gay characters in monster high and for it to be so accessible! i thought the art style was fine, if a little simplistic. very anime-esque.
