I kept seeing everyone on my feed calling this a must-read, so I finally caved—and absolute zero regrets. I never expected a story packed with ghosts, black magic, and shaman rituals to become one of my favorite comfort books, but here we are! I am officially in my Khom Khlang brain rot era.
First off, the author wasn't lying when they said we’d never forget Mae Kru Bulan. She is an icon. As a super famous shaman in her province, she has everyone from locals and celebrities to devoted students looking up to her. But despite it all, she’s basically been waiting her whole life for her karmic partner—the ultimate yearner.
Peem is a ridiculously stubborn, hot-headed police lieutenant whose goal is to throw dark-magic criminals behind bars. She carries heavy family angst and grief, and standard police work isn't cutting it when the law fails to keep dark occultists off the streets. Out of pure desperation (and zero actual belief in the spiritual), Peem ends up at Bulan’s doorstep asking for help.
*The Caretaker vs. The Fortress: Literally everything Bulan does or orders is out of genuine concern for Peem's safety, but Peem is so guarded and traumatized that she questions and doubts every single move. *Bulan’s Amusement: Bulan is fully aware of how challenging Peem’s stubbornness is, but she’s secretly so amused and smitten that she fell for all of Peem anyway. *The Mutual Obsession: Even after Bulan confesses and they hook up, Peem’s brain refuses to accept why someone like Bulan would be so completely dedicated to her as a karmic partner. She constantly doubts if she's even "the one." *Softening the Walls: The more Peem gets to know Bulan, the more she sees Bulan just being authentic, mature, and true to herself—and Peem falls hard.
Watching Peem slow-burn her way into realizing how genuinely dedicated Bulan is to her literally melts my heart. It’s not just romance; the plot goes deep into Asian culture, spiritual beliefs, and past-life karma. As they hit massive obstacles in their relationships, I started noticing subtle hints that Bulan’s father (a late shaman) actually foresaw certain events before they happened. The story drops so many intriguing breadcrumbs that clearly set the stage for an explosive Book 2—and hopefully a deep dive into their past life, too.
At its core, Bulan is such a refreshing main character—a mature, confident woman who knows exactly what she wants and isn't afraid to say it directly—while Peem learning to exist in Bulan’s world is top-tier character development.
