Clarence Manning is a working stiff and a borderline alcoholic, whose only solace is gazing out his window at mankind with a drink in his hand. When the gods of creation - Trujillo, Donatello, and Lenore - bestow him with love and success, he rebukes them with a vengeance. Clarence wants no part of divine intervention.
But he cannot ignore his provenance, which lies with the gods, and soon, a gambit is set. Trujillo, Donatello, and Lenore, challenge him individually, and when he accepts, Clarence discovers a secret within himself: the gods have bestowed him with their power, and what he chooses to do with it is beyond catastrophic.
Not for the faint of heart, All The Gods Against Me is a mature, dark, and gritty novel that mixes philosophy, theology, and its own mythos into a supernatural tale of fantasy and science fiction, a jarring piece of imagination that clearly stands in a class by itself.
Brandon Berntson grew up in various towns throughout Colorado, where most of his stories take place. His work spans from serious, adult horror to playful, young adult fantasy and everything in between. He is the author of Castle Juliet and When We Were Dragons, enchanting, magical reads for all ages. He is also the author of Body of Immorality, a cryptic collection of horror stories, and the raw, adult themed All The Gods Against Me.
He loves art, music, indie films, classic horror films, and hockey. He lives in Longmont, Colorado.
Beware those of a faint heart! This fantasy/horror will have you examing your own dark beast within (you KNOW you have one).
Clarence Manning is a damaged, jaded soul who is being tested. Is he able to recognize true goodness, or is it madness? Does he save the world, or even himself?
Brandon Berntson's novel is truly original. Take the plunge into this dark and gritty world and you won't regret it.
Awesome! This is the kind of book I like. Kind of a tragic, muckraking. I thought of 1984 and the Jungle, and though it doesn't have that extreme, it has its own kind of adult darkness and realness to it. The struggles of life and the frustration of living in today's modern world and how we deal with it. And that's just for starters. Be warned, though, there is some graphic content.
The worst book I have ever read in my entire life so far. No one acts like real people, no one talks like real people, the whole story is just stupid, and there's so many scenes and characters that could easily be cut with no effect to the plot.
Very weird, but good. It really was not what I expected, but it kept me captivated. It was interesting enough to make me want to read the next book, but it seems more like it was a story all by itself. It will be interesting to see if any of these characters make an appearance in the next 2 books.
The book starts off interestingly, and I was engaged for a while. But soliloquy after soliloquy made me tire of Clarence ' s whining about not being perfect. And I'm not into reading books about characters I dislike. Ultimately gave up about 33% done.
DNF: First chapter was disjointed and riddled with swearing. I did a search and the F-word appears 87 times. Nope, sorry. Between the clunky sentences and foul language I wasn't invested. Not worth my time.
Brandon created his own mythos in All The Gods Against Me. Part theology, philosophy, even Biblical, but every inch a touch of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Very unique.
