The word "phenomenology" often triggers PTSD and fits of erratic and often explosive rants about the "futility" and overly-complex nature of such a field. To those people I would say; You are right....but cry me a river when you can overcome your trauma by reading this book. Yes...ladies and gentlemen..phenomenology is ACTUALLY accessible by reading this book. You heard it right...so come on along and have a look at it ( I sound like a circus pimp....never said I had marketing skills).

Jokes aside, this book is methodologically sane and to the point kind of read: exactly what we need when dealing with such obscure concepts. It is divided into 5 main chapters; the first 4 deal with the main theorists of phenomenology in acute detail: Husserl, Heidegger (actually fathomable here, no joke), Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty. The last chapter comprises a critique of phenomenology. Ergo, the book is methodologically solid and rich content-wise.

It would be foolish from my part to try and enunciate the findings of this book, for it would take me a long time to synthesize and synthesize some more what I learned which is to be synthesized as well ad nauseam. My advice is to read this book, delve into it, have an existential crisis, then note down what you learned and carry on with your life knowing things that will help you become more of an active being in this world till Death says otherwise.

Fantastic series!

Cerbone was able to explain profound philosophy using simple metaphors and analogies for non-philosophy readers. The title of the book is so apt because at the end of it you can really say that you have understood phenomenology.

It is written so lightly and so interestingly that I even considered it as a bed book. :)

A "comprehensive" introduction to a subject I know precious little about. I was concerned when I began reading it because I thought there was alot this book could do wrong. Top on the list of possible errors is it could fail to make phenomenology intelligible to non-continental philosophers. Were it to do that, it might be a fine discussion of phenomenology but still be a poor introduction to it. I am overjoyed to say that this is quite far from the case. Cerbone is well versed in analytic philosophy of mind, and so is able to relate many of the points made by famous phenomenological philosophers to various problems and positions within analytic phil mind debates. It is to his further credit that he does this in a way that does not seem to cramp his more basic straightforward presentation of the material itself. Analytic readers are kept up to speed, but the book isn't a pure work of translation from one philosophical tradition to another; its substance is not to be underestimated. Highly recommended for analytics getting into continental work for the first time, as well as philosophers of mind interested in seeing to what extent phenomenology might be able to serve as a foil to contemporary debates in the analytic world. Also highly recommended for advanced undergrads.

I wanted a reminder of the tradition & to see if there was anything I was missing. A charming, succinct text but I'm on the other side of its project.

This book was a compelling introduction to the ideas put forth by the movement of phenomenology and those philosophers tied to its development. It offers an overview of phenomenology through the concepts born from Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. Critiques and agreements from each are discussed, which allows the reader to choose their preferred definition of phenomenology. For me this involved taking bits of the practice from each that rang true within me most. I found it fascinating how the description of ‘the reduction’, ‘pre-judgmental’, ‘first hand consciousness/experience’ discussed in phenomenology closely related to a meditative state of consciousness.

The ideas proposed in Existentialism were also made much clearer to me within this book; the phrase ‘ existence precedes essence’ best sums up this way of thinking to me and urges us beings to take responsibility for our own direction and meanings in life.

A good book that needed better editing. Distracting typos. But a good readable overview that does not obscure the author’s appreciation of phenomenology.

I wouldn't say I totally understand phenomenology now, but I definitely have a much much better grasp of what it is.
