Romance Quickies: Encounter 3, by Monique DuBois introduces us to Malia. Malia is a probation officer who has a serious attraction to one of her former parolees. Jeremy was busted for underground fighting, something he only did because he wants to keep his younger brother off the streets and he doesn't have any real skills beyond fighting. He also doesn't trust women due to actions by his mother. So, while he acknowledges his attraction to Malia, he is not looking for a relationship, which makes him a perfect target for the bet Malia and her friends have.
I will start off by saying that if attempted rape or sexual violence is a trigger for you, do not read this. There is an attempted rape scene in this encounter, though not involving Jeremy.
As the main characters in the previous two encounters did, the book starts off with Malia musing on both the type of men she likes as well as what she would do with the money should she win and her chances of winning. While she knows she is endangering her employment by having sex with Jeremy, her attraction to him is such that she is willing to risk it, especially since she knows he doesn't want an actual relationship. Unfortunately, because she has spent time at his apartment as his probation officer, she doesn't want to stay there for the encounter. And thus, she entices him to the park.
Jeremy doesn't live in a safe neighborhood and the park near his apartment is a dangerous one. While I get the fantasy of hot outdoor sex, combined with the running theme in this series of public or near public sex, the sheer stupidity of this decision almost turned me off. I was willing to go with it though since this series of books are fantasy. Unfortunately, the attempted rape that occurs in the park turned me off of this book, mostly because it came out of nowhere, seemed highly avoidable by the characters, and resulted in a very unrealistic response by Malia to the attempted rapists.
As in the other books, the sex was good. Perhaps because Jeremy is a rough man and a fighter, the sex felt raw and animalistic, helped by Malia's willingness to submit to Jeremy. The ending left us with a bit of a cliffhanger, which I will keep quiet on in order to preserve it. It does leave one wondering how Malia will overcome it though.
Overall, my biggest problem with this encounter was the attempted rape and response to it, maybe especially because she is a probation officer. I like Malia as a character, even if Jeremy feels a bit too much like a good thing - the thug with a heart of gold, if you will. Taking out the sexual violence scenes make this my favorite of the books so far. However, since the encounter does include those scenes, the book instead becomes very hard to recommend, especially since it just feels as if those scenes were included to create drama.
Malia's a parole officer and has been interested in one of her charges for a while now. Finally, when he's off her docket, they agree to hook up.
And here's my issue: she has a lot to lose and yet she still agrees to go to a well known dangerous park with him to have sex.... and then there's an attempted rape and then there's a cliffhanger when they're caught.
Ugh -- the attempted rape scene really brought this down for me. It didn't heighten anything for me here.
Slightly alarming for a bit. Afterwards the author teases relentlessly it seems until the right moment, then as is the standard leaves the reader to wonder what happens next? Stay tuned.
