LA Vipers #5

Risking the Pucking Defense

Rate this book
RTPD is the fifth steamy instalment for the LA Vipers Ice Hockey Series.

An all-new, steamy, and angsty reverse-age-gap forbidden ice hockey romance from USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author Tracy Lorraine.

Hayden Monroe.
Hockey god.
Far too innocent for me.

When I secured my job with the LA Vipers franchise, I was running—running from my past and a pain that never stopped chasing me.

LA was supposed to be a fresh start, but the nightmares still haunt me. And the second I look into Hayden’s eyes, I see the same pain staring back.

He’s too young, too good, too sweet to carry grief like that. But it’s too late. The damage has been done, and there’s nothing I can do to change it. I should stay away. He needs to focus on the new season.

But I can’t.
I know that kind of loss.
What it is to survive it alone.

So I tell myself I’m only helping him through the worst of it. But somewhere along the way, that line blurs. Now, I don’t just want to keep him afloat— I want to be the thing he holds onto.

While I fight with every reason we can’t be together, Hayden doesn’t care about any of them.

He just wants me. But can I give him that?

Grief can change one’s path. To stay focused Hayden has been avoiding life. To overcome the tragedy Hayden is going to need a little help from his friends, his team mates. Hailee works with the team and doesn’t like to overstep boundaries, but when it comes to Hayden it’s hard to say no.

I don’t really do sad books but this is a Tracy Lorraine book so I gave it a shot. The LA viper series is full of different troupes just like her other series, however some of the ones in this series aren’t my favourite. I liked Hayden and glad he got his happy ever after with Hailee.

Risking the Pucking Defense just climbed up to the top of my favorites of this year. This was beyond amazing and I honestly couldn’t put this one down. So many emotions right from the beginning.

Hayden Monroe, I’ve been intrigued of him from the start of this series. The rookie making a name for himself. But inside he has a lot going on. He’s dealing with the grief of losing his twin sister. Who basically was his best friend, now he has to do everything without her. With the help of some great teammates and their support he will do everything to fulfill his dream and getting the cup. Not only from his teammates but the fiercely talented Hailee. She lends her support and show him that he is not alone.

Hailee Caldwell is one of the best PR director for the LA Vipers. She is good at what she does. She doesn’t take anything from the players. She has a past she is still dealing with. When she shows her support to Hayden they share a bond no one saw coming. You’ll see everything she had to endure in the past and understand why she is the way she is.

When friendship turns into something more powerful you’ll be rooting for these two. She older. He younger. This combination was everything, the chemistry was so perfect. I just enjoyed them so much. So much chemistry, feelings and emotions. This was such an incredible read. I can’t wait to come back to this incredible series.

Risking the Pucking Defense is the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and emotional.

Hailee Caldwell and Hayden Monroe are the storybook perfect couple.😍 It took their rollercoaster journey for them to realize it, but they are couple goals. ❤️

Hayden Monroe is hurting after losing his sister, Rylee. And not just his sister, but his twin sister and best friend. Hayden is the best and sweetest brother. His grief hits him at various moments throughout the book because of how close they were, which is where Hailee first steps in. She is familiar with his kind of pain and even if he hadn't had a huge crush on her, they bond over a similar shared grief.

Aside from this bond, Hayden has had a crush on Hailee from the moment he met her, so what started as a sort of comfort moment, turned into something that burns hot and because Hailee also had a bit of a crush on Hayden as well, these two are pure fire🔥. Hailee does everything in the beginning to tame it, because she's a professional first and foremost, and Hayden adores that about her even more, but that will to hold back doesn't last forever,  thank the powers that be.😂 Seriously, the power dynamic of Hailee being in charge, Hayden loves it BTW, is pure🔥 🥵 fire!

There is a lot on the line, especially for Hailee, in regards to her job, her past leaking out, and facing all the doors she's closed from walking away from her past being opened again. While she's facing her deeper feelings for Hayden she's also wondering what that could mean for her life imploding and what would that mean for the young rookie. Would he actually stay? Could he be traded? There were so many unknowns and as much as Hailee liked cleaning up other PR fiascos, she wasn't sure about her own life.

Aside from that, this little, ball-busting woman who terrifys everyone else around the Viper facility is the perfect woman for the sweet rookie who reads romance and will crawl on his knees to please her. 😉❤️‍🔥 He’s the sweetest kind of book boyfriend. I'm talking gray sweatpants, slutty reading glasses, who is all wrapped up in a hot bod too.🥵 I mean who can deny Hayden's golden retriever personality anything...am I right 😂.

The two of them were special for so many reasons; finding out who they were together as a couple, feeling even more confident within the organization, and solidifying their bonds within their friend group was so beautiful. Everything and everyone was well rounded, plotted out perfectly, and this book was one of my favorite in the series so far.

I have LOVED every book in this series, but I was really waiting for this one and it did not disappoint! Risking The Pucking Defense by Tracy Lorraine is book five in the LA Vipers series. Hayden and Hailee’s story!! These two were everything! Hot young hockey player, sassy and fierce fmc, reverse age gap, juicy hockey romance with so much angst, heat and yearning and the BEST found family! You need this book and series!

Hayden Monroe is drowning in grief after losing his twin sister Rylee. She was truly his best friend. And the grief has absolutely devastated his soul in every way. This man, this man’s heart is pure gold. Sweet, kind, so caring and loving, so so selfless. Only his second year on the team and truly carving a space in this NHL world. AND since day one on the Viper’s team, he has had the biggest crush on Hailee. The older woman, the woman he thinks will never truly see him.

Hailee Caldwell, this women is goals! Fierce, sassy, strong, independent and so successful in the PR world. But through hurt and the past, she has learned to do it all alone. She truly understands sadly Hayden’s pain all too well and connects deeply with him through their shared heartbreak and loss. And this beautiful friendship and bond begins. And the connection burns between them. She tries so hard to keep things professional because her career and responsibilities come first. But that tension, holy hell, the angst and yearning, the push and pull? I LOVED the dynamic of she’s older, he’s very inexperienced, SHE teaches him and for once SHE dominates! And when these two finally give in, it is everything. These two together are pure fire!

The found family in this book, you will absolutely fall in love with these characters, PURE GOLD! They are there for each other unconditionally and it's so fun to see them all growing💚

This story was everything I wanted and more for Hayden! It hits you down deep, every emotion, so raw and real. This book and series is a MUST. Can’t wait for what’s next💚

I was worried about this as i really didnt like Rett and Beas book but TL pulled it back with this.

I really enjoyed Hailee and Haydens story. Hes an absolute sweetheart and he knew the second he saw Hailee she was it for him. He is not your typical bad boy hockey player. Hes a sweet gentle boy and I really wanted to mother him more than adding him to my book boyfriend list.

Things I liked-
*the way it handled grief, it showed how you can be fine and then bang it hits you out of nowhere. The importance of having a good support system around you to help.

*the hotel scene was hot as hell! "Crawl to me" !?!?!? Damn... we love a good boy.

* catching up with all the other couples, their friendship and bonds they all share and encourage Hailee to accept their friendship even though shes terrified to. LA Vipers is a beautiful world I love being in.

* The writing flowed well and kept me engaged throughout (which is why the ending dissapointed me so much)

Things I didnt like-
* the age gap. This is a me problem. im not a huge age gap fan when they very young. I dont mind an age gap when the younger is at least 24. however, Hayden is 21!! Its not even a small age gap its 9 years. Maybe if he was a bit more worldly it wouldn't have been so bad, but hes not. Hes an innocent, naive boy. Luckily, I wasnt constantly reminded that he was only 21 so I could pretend he was 24 instead.

* the ending was abrupt asf! I dont understand the point of her ex being portrayed as this cruel spiteful character if he was just going to sign the divorce papers without any drama. I think it would have made more sense if he caused a bit of angst between them. But it just ended out of nowhere. When I turned the page and saw "epilogue" I had to double check i hadn't skipped a couple of chapters.

This book is a lovely read, so if you're looking for angst and drama this is not for you. Its a nice romance with a sweet mmc and a happy ending without a 3rd act breakup or problem.

Bring on Killer!

I'm in love with the LA Vipers series and Tracy Lorraine is excellent at her job because I love every single book in it. And every time I try to pick favorites I find it difficult to choose. So far Hayden and Hailey are taking a major part of my heart because those two are everything. Both of them went through so much in their lives and never gave up. I loved Hailey for her strength and resilience, strong will and steel backbone, her brains and loving heart. Because when Hayden needed someone to lean on she was there for him. She was compassionate and understanding and gave such a great advice. Hayden getting the support from his teammates and friends helped him get through his grief. Hailey helping him manage it in the first place starting a healing process in herself. Him having a crush on her was so sweet. And I loved it that they helped each other heal and recover and be brave enough to follow their dreams and fight for their happily ever after. Let's just say that the tension and the slow burn were bitter sweet and oh so steamy. Hailey was a boss lady through and through. And Hayden was confident enough to give her the space where she can be herself and learn to trust again. And Hailey had found such a good friends with the other girls. But Bea was the one who truly understand and knows what she went through. Loved it when both Hayden and Hailey managed to rise above all the bad things that happened to them and still remain good people. Totally in love with the epilogue but the bonus one was chef's kiss. Now I can't wait for Killer's story.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.

Risking The Pucking Defense: L.A Vipers Series Book 5 ) What to expect 🏒Ice Hockey Romance 💚Sports Romance 🏒Reverse Age Gap 💚PR Manager x Hockey Player 🏒Forbidden/ hurt / comfort 💚inexperienced Hero / She’s in charge and all the feels!! I laughed, I cried, I yelled , I swooned and I cheered so freaking hard from beginning to end. Hayden and Hailee’s story really was everything, just absolutely everything!! Fun , steamy , beautiful, heartbreaking, heartwarming and Uttely addictive. Words cannot even start to describe how much I genuinely adored these two together. The way they were so different yet complimented one another so perfectly. The progression of their relationship and how the friendship between them turned into so much more . I also loved that both had emotional struggles and obstacles to overcome , that neither was perfect because that simple fact made them so much more likable and relatable for me . Both have things they are trying to overcome . For Hayden it is the loss of his sister and the emotional toll that has taken on his life . Because not only was she his sister , but his best friend, the person who was his biggest supporter. Hailee has some things from her past she is dealing with also .sometimes you meet someone when you least expect it and they just so happen to be exactly what and who you need . It truly was so beautiful watching these two fall , the way they helped one another heal and the love and friendship they found . The way they became one another’s safe place . Tracy just wrecked me once again in all the best ways possible 💚💚💚💚💚

Risking The Pucking Defense
La Vipers Book 5
Written by Tracy Lorraine

I knew since book four that this book was going to wreck me in the best way. I was not wrong. My heart breaks for Hayden. I absolutely love that Haliee wants to be there for Hayden during the hardest time in his life.

They build a strong friendship before anything more happens and they are my favorite. I love the chemistry and understanding between them. They both have experienced loss and trauma, but that aside they found each other and I love that for them. I love how gone he is for her when he always asks if he is dreaming when they're together. Swooning over Hayden over here. Hailee doesn't let a lot of people in and I just love that she let Hayden be an important person to her.

👏 they both read romance books! As usual I fell in love with Tracy's characters and her writing. I will never get enough of her books.

I have loved every single book in this series, but this one is the standout! It’s the one that leaves no question how much a group of hockey players care about each other, it’s the one that wrecks you enough there are tears, it’s the one that reminds you to live and never take a second for granted, and it’s the one with an innocence to it that makes you keenly aware of how stripped and raw grief makes you and how much awe there can be in every single simple moment when the right person is by your side. Does it have banter? Oh yes! Is there heat? Um, hello crawl to me! Do you kind of get your rocks off on how scared a tiny woman can make a group of hockey players twice her size? Absolutely. And there’s definitely laughter between the heart break and lightness that counter acts the pain but more than that it’s a reverse age gap where Hailee sees Hayden and all the ways his loss is wrecking him all day every day and Hayden sees through every crack in Hailee’s armor to the woman who wants to risk it all but is terrified because for the first time ever she has something to lose that is completely her own and it’s incredible. Five absolutely outstanding stars!

💚So much more than a hockey story! 💚

I love when I get a chance to read a book by Tracy, whether it’s dark and twisty or emotional and heartbreaking she leaves no stone unturned and writes completely addictive stories that I can’t put down.

This is the fifth book in her LA Vipers series, and it’s a good one, it’s refreshing to get a hockey romance where hockey is merely a side character to an epic love story, and that’s exactly what this is.

Hayden is broken, barely surviving the loss of his sister when Hailee steps in to support him however she can. And that’s how it all begins, with roadblocks that would make even the strongest question if it’s worth it, these two decide that it most definitely is.

This is a beautiful addition to this series, it’s over 500 pages, which can be daunting but it’s worth each and every page. Do you need to start at the beginning? I’m going to say yes, because it will also be worth every single page.

Tracy has done it again. This series is so freaking good and I was so excited to read Hayden and Hailee’s story. I was not let down one bit. I will tell you this, you better have some tissues nearby. This one pulled at my heartstrings a lot. These two have losses in their past. One more recent than the other. Hailee sees the same look in Hayden’s eyes that she had years ago. Hayden has wanted Hailee since he first saw her. There is a nine year age difference and Hailee is the older woman, but age is just a number. She thinks he deserves someone more his age and someone with not as much baggage as she does. He doesn’t care about anything, but her and he’s willing to do anything to prove this. I loved their story. I was hooked from the beginning to the very end. There is drama, angst, secrets, loss, revelations, and hot and spicy scenes. These two were fantastic and Tracy did an excellent job telling their story and kept me hooked. I can’t wait for Killer’s story.

Back in the world of the LA Vipers! This book is a rollercoaster of emotions - the grief hits hard right from the beginning with Hayden trying to come to terms with the loss of his sister. Haylee is like a rock for him and his feelings towards her only deepen when she comes to his aid. Hayden and Haylee's relationship even though it is fast off the mark the passion and love is instant.
I absolutely love a reverse age gap & when Haylee takes the reins it is so hot!!! The spice level is off the charts & Hayden is only too willing to do anything she asks. I love the whole Viper family and they all lean on each other and have each others back. The banter between the hockey players is hilarious!
Looking forward to more ice hockey action & Viper family in the next book. Also the bomb thay was dropped in the bonus epilogue!!!!!

Every book in this series just keeps getting better. I say everytime that this one is my new favourite but I think Hayden just stole the top spot out from under everyone else.

These two are absolutely perfect for one another, they are both trying to heal from events in their life. Hayden from the loss of his twin and Hailee from a past she’d rather forget.

Watching these two find their way to one another and Hailee helping Hayden through some of the moments his grief pops up is truely beautiful to watch.

I loved both of these characters when they were just side characters Hayden the happy ridiculous rookie and Hailee the scary pr manager who had all the big hockey players running scared if they did something wrong. Seeing a different side to these two was amazing. I mean who doesn’t want a hockey player who reads romance!

Hayden and Hailee are the perfect age-gap couple. Hayden definitely has an old soul, he's also extremely in touch with his emotions something not many guys his age are.
He's also not in a great place he's grieving and it's that emotion that first draws Hailee closer.
Once Hailee has entered Hayden's space, his crush morphs and keeping himself in check is harder than you would think. Especially when his fun banter and flirting causes Hailee to clam up and panic a bit.
Not one to give up Hayden watches and learns what he thinks and hopes Hailee needs. The next time he wants to make a move he hands her all the control.
You want to miss this one Hayden is boyfriend goals and Hailee is so fierce and brave. Together they are spectacular and so much fun.

My Review
Tracy Lorraine
Risking the Pucking Defense (LA Vipers Book 5)

This story was absolutely fantastic! Tracy Lorraine delivered an emotional and captivating hockey romance that had me hooked from the very first chapter. Hayden and Hailee’s journey was beautifully written, with incredible character development and heartfelt storytelling.

The emotional depth of this book hit all the right notes for me. I laughed, I teared up, and I found myself completely invested in their story and eager to see what would happen next. The chemistry, the angst, the healing, and the romance were perfectly balanced.

This book exceeded my expectations in every way. No spoilers, but if you love reverse age-gap romances, emotional character growth, heartfelt moments, and a well-earned HEA, then this is definitely a book you need to add to your TBR.

Highly recommend!

Great hockey romance from Tracy Lorraine! I love reading anything by Tracy, I have read to find something of hers I don’t like. She is a wonderful writer who fully tells her stories while developing strong characters for you to love. This one was a forbidden romance that had some added complications. I was thrilled with how the story was told and went through many emotions while reading it. That is not always the case with hockey stories. This one has some awesome highs of happiness, but also some extreme lows of sadness. This is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. It just helps to have read the other books in order to know the secondary characters that pop in and out.

This book is an angsty reverse-age-gap forbidden ice hockey romance. The reverse-age-gap usually is one of my less favorite especially if a MMC is a golden retriever type. But I couldn't say Hayden is a golden retriever type in his own book though. He is bloodier in this book and I think that is why Hailee gives him a chance to get closer to her. And if I had to compare both of them, in my opinion, it is reverse-grumpy-sunshine as well.

The story is angsty but not as much as all the previous books of the LA Vipers series which I was appreciate but it's still too long though. But at the end, I think I like this book the most in the series even if I was frustrated with Hayden sometimes and also curious about Hailee's past most of the time while I was reading through their story, LOL.

Hayden and Hailee

This is the fifth instalment in this series and now it follows Rookie Hayden and PR director Hailee.
Both are dealing with tragic and sad pasts. Hayden has great support from his teammates who want to help him to make his dream come true and get the cup.
He lost his twin sister who also was his best friend, and now doing everything alone is of course very hard for him.
Hailee also has some things in her past and she also understands Hayden’s feelings and cares for him.
That leads to a bond nobody saw coming. And slowly one gets to learn what the story is about Hailee.
Their story is truly sad and beautiful at the same time. An inexperienced male character who is also younger than his opposite attract is rare and sigh worthy in here.

Tracy Lorraine did it again with another amazing book! It’s impossible not to enjoy this series!

Risking The Pucking Defense is forbidden, reverse age gap, hockey romance that delivers the hurt/comfort vibes so strongly. I absolutely love an emotional book and this is that. Hayden and Hailee captured my heart immediately. The feelings and the actions throughout truly prove this to be one book that is strengthened by grief. I really enjoyed this book and loved reading each page.

I enjoyed this one a lot and can’t wait for more of this series. I love Tracy’s books and all the characters she writes. I definitely recommend this book for others to read.

I'm glad Hayden finally got his book. I was always rooting for him. Always felt bad he was always friend zone. Not surprised he was paired with Hailee. He definitely needed a mature woman in his life.

I honestly would of like more of a story with Hailee's past, the divorce I feel all that build up for nothing.

Now we have Killer coming in next can't wait for that book.

There were a few typos in this book I wish would of been fixed prior to release such as a chapter that was supposed to be labeled Hailee said Hayden instead. There was another where she said she was alive for 4 decades meanwhile she's 30 not 40.

Healing reverse age gap...

These two were so cute together. Hayden really helped Hailee come out of her shell and grow more confident in her relationships with those around her. Hayden also helped her move on from her past and opened her eyes to the new found family that she had been putting walls up against. Hailee was able to be there for Hayden and comfort him through his grief based on her own past experiences and past loss. She really helped him work through all of that.

I love a good age gap story and this was such a sweet and cute reverse age gap. This was such a great addition to the LA Vipers world. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

Hayden Monroe is the definition of a golden retriever

After loving reading about Bea and Everett in the previous book I was super excited to read Hayden and hallies story! I loved how flirty Hayden was with Hallie and as much as she fought it she eventually broke down and their love story began! Plus it was great to read about how she helped him overcome his grief as well as how the guys on the team helped as well.. another great part of the book was Haydens friendship with Everett and Bea! This book was so enjoyable and I can't wait for killers book!

I love everyone one of these books. They are more than a Hockey series. The friendship and romance make it so much better. The characters you feel like you know personally. I usually don’t like the reverse age gap but it worked for this book. Hayden and Hailee are soo cute together. My heart broke for Hayden going through so much with his sister. Seeing all of the guys on the team pull together and show support, it will melt your heart.
Absolutely great book!

Risking The Pucking Defense is the 5th book in the LA Vipers series. This book is about Hayden and Hailee and is told from both of their points of view.

This book starts off with something happening in Hayden's life that he struggles with. Hailee is there to help him through it. After that night she is always there when he needs her.

Real feelings start to develop between the two, but with Hailee working for the same hockey team Hayden is a part of, it could put one of their careers on the line.

Can these two get through everything that is thrown at them? Will they get their happy ending?

These two went through so much! I loved seeing their bond grow, and seeing both of their pasts. I also loved seeing other characters from this series. I'm excited to continue on and see what happens next in the series!

i was so excited to read hayden’s story, but honestly after a few chapters it just dragged on. her last few have done this also which is sad because she is a talented writer and the first book in this series was good too. i’m praying she keeps the next book more interesting. i’d rather it be shorter if that’s what makes it so. fingers crossed.

So much emotion

This book has pretty much every emotion possible and it feels like a rollercoaster ride.
Hayden is mourning the loss of his twin. Hailee has so many secrets and her hard shell hides a woman with a few big messes. Together they heal each other as they find love.
I enjoyed the book and the ending was perfect.

I skimmed through most of this book and stopped to actually read some scenes/pages/chapters. After book three (the only one I have read start to finish in this series), I knew I could not get through more in the same fashion. However, I love Hayden. He is adorable, a mix of unsure and confident. And I appreciate Hailee's confidence in him.

This freaking book…

In every other book, Hayden has always just stood out. He was the sweet little puppy dog side character that I just loved. And this book mad me love him so much more. I loved there chemistry. I loved how protective Hailee was over Hayden. I love the friend group. This is such a good series.
