This was the text book for a Humanities class. This book has altered the direction and focus of how I look at the potential to enjoy life. It stresses the importance of an holistic education in a culture of "education generalists", the importance of cultural literacy that is represented, "not by a prescriptive list of books but rather by a descriptive list of the information actually possessed by literate Americans", and the greater take away from life made possible through exploring culture. I found the first unit about the humanities incredibly insightful. The inclusion of "My Graduation Speech" by Neil Postman was almost worth the price of the book!
For a textbook, this managed to be fun and interesting, which is saying a lot. It has great illustrations, stories, and examples, but I feel the actual explanation of the principles behind the book was sometimes lacking. Still, for a fun look at the humanities, it was a good book.
this book gives you so many tools for understanding the arts--visual arts, poetry, theatre, operas, architecture, etce--it is eye-opening and very fun to read.
