The story is a work of fiction but is inspired by the author's real life experiences within the Hash House Harriers Club.
The characters in the story use the skills from hash to build a community while also working to overcome their own grief and tragedy.

Hash House Harriers is a real club/organization with kennels in every major city in the world. Founded in 1938 in Malaysia by British Expats the Hash House Harriers has spent decades drinking beer and finding chalk marks in the streets, hills, and mountains.

Every regular hasher eventually earns a "Hash Name" that signifies their inclusion into the club. The names are often silly or vulgar but are meant to honor what makes each hasher unique while still giving others a laugh.
