A decision made by one can change the fate of all.
The aftermath of the Royal Forum has torn the continent of Fyriane apart. To avoid a coup in the Kingdom of Arlom, a line must be drawn, and a delicate balance struck.
With that balance comes a reluctant truce with the Queendom of Nyarelle and Kingdom of Marlyst. For without them, I may never survive the coming months, never discover the truths of Fyriane, and where my duties lie.
But the time for seeking answers, I found, has long past. The war I sought to avoid, has already begun.
While the monarchs struggle to navigate the growing conflict, a deeper threat lurks amongst us. Hiding in the shadows. Just beyond our shores. Waiting to strike.
Hannah has been obsessed with fantasy and romance books for as long as she can remember. In her early twenties, Hannah was camping on the sunshine coast in beautiful British Columbia when she turned to her friend and said, ‘I would love to write a book, I feel there is so much going on in my head and there are stories that need to be told.’ Fast forward a handful of years, Hannah resides in her hometown of Perth, WA, with her husband, and fur babies Walter, Loki and Ridley. She finally watered the seed she planted all those years ago, and her imagination bloomed.
This book made me realize I’m not hating men to my full potential. Turns out I can hate them even more. Some of the antagonists in this book are *too good.
I genuinely did not see the ending coming and my jaw dropped but I can’t say why!!!
I am obsessed with the prophecy and I’m glad we got more of that in this book. I go back and forth on my favorite characters but I find myself returning to the goddess Wystia and god Merlot. I love a tragic mythology.
FYI there are some fight scenes similar to Elise Kova’s Air Awakens! So if you’re an Elise Kova fan you’ll love this one.
Lastly make sure you’re paying attention because this is truly a game of chess. Not a single page is wasted.
Wow, the anticipation of this second book did not disappoint. The way POS left me hanging at the end, I couldn’t wait for this to come. It started with a bang and kept me hooked the whole way through. Learning more about the characters and their back stories. I can’t believe how many times I said ‘no way’ and then picking up POS to go, oooh sneaky to know we had some Easter eggs already. Great read, can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I thought Pawns of Salistya had me in a choke hold, YEA RIGHT!! Decoys of Arlom picks up right where we left off and then left me questioning everything! It also confirmed my suspicions that I refuse to go into details about! But MF betrayal is a bitch especially by those closest to you! It had me doubting all of my fave characters!
Both books contain a lot of female characters being treated like absolute dog shit at the hands of men. But the story proves that women are powerful, intelligent and capable of anything! HJ Bogue described each women’s strengths and weaknesses so beautifully. I saw myself in each one of them. Although our stories aren’t the same we all can relate in one way or other.
Thank you HJ Bogue! I can’t wait to read more of your work!!
Pawns of Salistya ended on a cliffhanger. I had a theory regarding one of the major final scenes, and I was eager to find out if I was right about it. Although I had to wait until the end of Decoys for the revelation, the journey was totally worth it.
Apart from the theory, what excited me about the book was the hidden agenda trope, which is my favourite. Throughout the book, everyone's loyalties kept changing to the point where I was constantly questioning every character's motives. Some of the characters were unpredictable, there were double-agents, and not everyone was who they said they were, so I was constantly on edge waiting for someone to get betrayed.
The story was told through multiple POVs, and while Valare's POV showed her mental transition from a reluctant heroine to someone who bravely accepted her destiny, Dwyla's POV was all about creating a facade to have others underestimate her before striking at the right time. Both characters had their fair share of doubts and anxiety, but they worked on it. I wanted Slaviya's POV because I'm sure there's a lot of hidden trauma there that she has masked with her stoic nature. Hopefully, the sequel will have more of her story.
There was more development in terms of magic and the book also explored the history with Wystia and Merlot and its impact on the current times.
In terms of the romance, I'm glad that although Valare and Xylan are fated to be together, they took it slow in this book. It was more about having an emotional bond and being with each other as equals than just being physical; that came much later.
The supporting characters in terms of Valare's Sol, the royals, Varquel and the others were well written and helped in moving the story forward. The villains were truly horrible, and I couldn't hate them enough. I'm also curious about the Tidal Beasts and where they fit into the conflict.
From the way things ended, it is very clear that more trouble is brewing, and it won't be long before war strikes. I can't wait for the sequel because there are some major secrets yet to be revealed.
I recommend it to readers who enjoy fantasy books with strong heroines fighting against patriarchy, magical abilities, found-family, fated-mates, secrets and betrayals, and some spice.
Overall, Decoys of Arlom is a strong continuation of the series, written in multiple POV. The tension, the politics and the constant sense that no one can be fully trusted made this such an addictive read.
What I really enjoyed was how much deeper the story goes into deception and strategy. Nothing is straightforward, every alliance feels and most of the times is fragile (don’t get too attached to any of the characters...ok maybe just to Valare and Xylan 😁😂...I really liked a few other characters but I am sooo afraid of book 3 🫣), every interaction feels like it has a second meaning, and it keeps you constantly questioning who is actually in control. The title fits perfectly because so much of this book revolves around manipulation, hidden motives, and characters being forced to play roles they may not fully choose.
Valare continues to heal and grow, but not in an easy or clean way. Her choices feel messy, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately very real given the past trauma, betrayals and the pressure she’s under. I liked that the story doesn’t shy away from showing the cost of power and the emotional toll of constantly having to outmanoeuvre everyone around her.
The romance continues to build in the background with that same tension and push-pull dynamic. It’s not the central focus, but it adds just enough emotional weight to balance out the political intrigue and high-stakes plot.
This book definitely feels like a bridge deeper into the series, more complex, more intense, and setting up even bigger consequences for what’s coming next. And once again… that ending leaves you needing the next book. I can’t recommend enough H.J. Bogue’s books 💙💙💙
Thank you to the author for letting me be a ARC reader!
WOW okay, if you thought Pawns of Salistya (book 1) had a major cliffhanger be prepared for this one! Left me with my jaw DROPPED!
Bringing in multi POV to book two was such a good touch, I loved being able to see a few other characters thoughts directly.
Valare goes through so much and somehow keeps it together just enough to the outside views. Between losing her husband, being betrayed by her lover and somehow figuring out this whole True Infinite thing, she makes it work. Her relationship with Xylan slowly grows and they start to work together more and more. Our fav sassy mage Meredith is always there to help her and makes sure she isn’t alone in her decisions. From the betrayal we had in Pawn’s we don’t really know who to trust but things all turn out for the best.
I disliked Slaviya in Pawn’s, but Decoys of Arlom really shows me more to her and made me see she is just as traumatized as Valare. I really hope we see more of her POV in future books.
Little Dwyla is in training, and trying to find herself as the baby of the three, seeing her POV throughout her trainings and her spy work is so fun. I hope her and Tarn are able to stay together 🥹
Don’t get me started on Bastra or Orzuk 🤬
This definitely left me with some theories I can’t wait to see if they are true!
A decision made by one can change the fate of all.... that is how the blurb for this book starts and it couldn't be more accurate.
I was given a copy of this book by the author. All opinions are my own.
The consequences of the events that occured during the Royal Forum has torn the Continent apart. Decisions need to be made about the threat of a coup, treason, and an unkown danger. The war has begun, will they discover in time what or who is the threat hiding in the shadows?
I am just going to say... WHAAAAAT? I don't think I can just write a review about what I liked or disliked about this book. First, what is there to dislike?! Nothing! Second, I can only say how this made me feel while I was reading. If you want a more specific review about what I think about characters, plot, world building... go to the review of Pawns of Salisya... because right now I only know that this book had me questioning absolutely everything. Every chapter brings a new conflict, new relations, new characters, new races, new everything! Every time I though I had it figured it out, it just made another torn and put my brain upside down. I don't know how can someone come up with a story so complex and easy to follow at the same time, but hey HJ Bogue just did it again! I can't wait to read next book because I definitely need to know more about The Ring and what is beyond the seas.
If you love a read so full of twists and turns that you mutter on repeat, “I didn’t see that coming,” THIS IS IT!
I thought “Decoys” alluded to a single plot element, but NO! Decoys were everywhere except where I fully expected to find them! The surprises just kept coming from the first chapter to the last page.
This second book in the series picks up the thread first woven in Pawns of Salistya, hurtling the readers deeper into the fantasy world of Fyriane in a fast-paced, rollercoaster ride of a storyline.
H J Bogue weaves an intricate tale, introducing multi-faceted monsters and darker villains. The action is intense, and the magic cauldron bubbles with tangled layers of intrigue, questionable motives, ancient prophecies and enough spice to make the brew tasty.
New players are on the board, the stakes are higher than ever, and every relationship is tested.
The traps have been baited and set.
Who can be trusted, and who are the Decoys of Arlom?
Grab your copy now and come along for the ride! You’ll need to strap in for this one!
Arc review. I absolutely inhaled both of these books, and am so grateful I got both arcs because I immediately had to pick up book 2 following the ending of book one. Although, I am still picking my jaw up off the floor from the ending of this one!
Book 2 immediately picks up from where we left off at the end of book 1. Although this time with a multi POV. Delving further into the magic system, character and relationship developments and high stakes brought on by the shift in the political dynamics. Hiding in the shadows lurks a danger they don’t see coming.
I was immediately pulled into this world and found myself instantly connecting to the characters, with a lot of enjoyable dynamics across different character relationships. I really enjoyed the plot line and character development, along with the slow burn and relationship dynamics between Valere and Xylon.
I absolutely ate these books up and loved every minute. I cannot wait for book 3!
Decoys of Arlom is a multi POV espionage-laced political fantasy. The pacing is strong right out the gate and never loses momentum.
Dwy was an absolute standout for me. Watching her take matters into her own hands was deeply satisfying, the antagonists(of which we also get a POV) are excellent foils for her. H.J. Bogue truly excels at writing vixens and villains alike.
Valare faces so many battles physically and mentally(seriously is my girl ever going to get a break?) and her growing arsenal of powers is getting more iconic by the book. I also really love her dynamic with Xy. Their romance is so organic after what feels like the slowest of burns between these two powerhouses.
When the twists hit, oh do they hit. I genuinely didn’t see many of them coming, especially the biggest of reveals at the end. The payoff was excellent and left me more than ready for what comes next.
This book was just as full of, if not more, twists and turns as the first one in this series. I was shocked. And the story did not disappoint either. There were red herrings and confusion everywhere. Once I thought I knew what was happening…bam! I knew nothing. It was amazing. I was so invested in this story and it kept me interested until the last line. And just like in book one, the spice was on point. There was just the right amount so that it didn’t overpower and it wasn’t overshadowed. I loved the push and the pull of everything, and I lost count of how many times I gasped while clutching my chest. Each and every character pulled me further into the story and I was simply along for the ride. But of course the ride couldn’t last and I was thrown from the tracks and left wondering where do I go from here by the ending?! My mind is broken. I need a moment to recover.
Intense, political, and filled with looming danger. Decoys of Arlom feels like the kind of fantasy where every choice carries consequences—and peace is only an illusion.
After the fallout of the Royal Forum, alliances become fragile, kingdoms stand on the edge of war, and trust feels more dangerous than betrayal.
✨ What makes it stand out: 👑 royal politics & shifting alliances ⚔️ looming war and hidden threats 🌑 tension-filled atmosphere 🖤 morally difficult decisions
The story builds a strong sense of uncertainty, where rulers are forced to navigate both external enemies and secrets hidden within their own lands.
There’s a constant feeling that something darker is waiting beneath the surface—and that no one is truly safe.
It’s dramatic, high-stakes fantasy with a strong political edge and a growing sense of inevitable conflict.
Continuing the story of the Queendom, as with book 1 there were a lot of twists and turns in the story, at times it felt too much, I do think that is a me issue though. We did get a satisfying conclusion to some of the threads here in book 2.
I still love Valare, seeing her stand her ground was a punch the air moment. however I absolutely fell in love with her sister Dwyla, and I can't pinpoint why but she was fascinating to read about. We also got a lot more from the side characters which I was really happy about.
I still struggled with the writing style. I would absolutely recommend these books for readers who love a contemporary feeling to fantasy fantasy.
Thank you to the author for a complimentary issue of this book. My review is my honest opinion
At almost twice the length of POS, it didnt feel long enough 😭😭 the betrayal had me in tears and questioning my very own observation skills. This book was harsh. The way Valare and the other women were treated made me so angry. I almost put the book down for good. However, I owed it to these characters to push through. It paid off in the best of ways! The author did an amazing job showing the resilience of these women and how intelligent women truly are. I applaud how it all turned out. Now, the plot and the other world building improved greatly in this one and it has me salivating for what is next for Valare, Meredith, and the others.
After the ending from book 1 I couldn't wait to start this. I was not at all disappointed with what this author gave us. We got a multi-person pov book with espionage, unraveling of secrets, and so much more. I loved how we got to learn so much more about some of the characters and the back stories to how they got to where they are now. The twists and turns keep you hooked and wanting more. I can't wait to get more of this series and see where we are going next. This author has me waiting impatiently for more books. This series is a must read.
Decoys of Arlom is a multi POV, slow burn fantasy. It starts right after the end of the previous book, and it has some really amazing twists that I didn't see coming.
Dwyla was a really interesting character. She didn't back down on anything. She's a strong young woman. Valare and Xylan. I loved their relationship. The dynamic between them and the slow burn of their romance was… chef's kiss.
Also, the ending. Excuse me, how am I supposed to wait until the next book after this ending?
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. This had so many plot twists, none of which I saw coming. It genuinely shocked me. It had quite a bit more world building and expanded the world a lot in this book compared to the first. At times, I was confused because there was so much going on but it all made sense in the end. The betrayals, the twists, the revelations - wow! This one kept me on my toes.
Book 2 brings in all the answers but then layers even more questions on our brains! This steamy political fantasy is everything you didn’t know you needed! The character development is *chefs kiss! If you’re a fan of books such as ACOTAR and Crescent City this is definitely a series for you to pick up!
After quite the cliff hanger you are thrown into the preparations for a war. This book has you questioning everyone, not understanding where allegiances lie or if you understand all the magic there is. So many questions throughout until you get to the ending...which does leave you on another cliff hanger, but not as drastic as the first book. Great banter.
All I can say is wow. The sequel to Pawns of Salistya is incredible. The twists, turns and surprises had me captive from the first page. Loved the character development, epic fight scenes and the politics amongst the characters and kingdoms. Can't wait for the rest of the series to be published !!
Decoys of Arlom is easily one of my best reads of the year.
The characters we came to love and hate in book one are beautifully developed in the second installment of the queendom series. Each one (old and new) has their own rich history and unique motivation, and I really enjoyed getting to know them better.
The plot is HEAVY and full of twists I didn’t see coming. At no point did I have any idea who I could and couldn’t trust….and in the end? I was STILL shocked. My feminine rage at the end 😭 I need book three.
Perfect for fans of books with fantasy and magic themes, and political intrigue, where romance that ISNT the core focus. 10/10, eagerly awaiting book 3
