I may look dainty, but I’m just as tough as every other firefighter. That might all go up in flames when my ex walks into the fire hall....
As the only woman in the fire hall, I’ve worked hard to earn my crew’s respect. But my plan to pass probation without drama goes up in smoke the moment my ex-boyfriend Brodie–the hottest reporter in town with serious Clark Kent energy–makes me the star of his latest feature.
The fire hall is in trouble, and the only way to save it? Prove the city needs telling my story in the process. As Brodie and I are forced to work together, I can’t help but notice his attempts to impress me. But it won’t work. I’ll never forget how he broke my heart when he dumped me three years ago.
When I take a risk at a call out and recklessly enter a burning room to rescue a young mother, the first person to come to my rescue is Brodie and I feel the heat between us as he manhandles me back to safety. I can’t start things up again with him…can I?
The captain’s "no-dating" rule means my job is as much on the line as my heart. I’m the one keeping the city safe from danger, but Brodie makes me feel protected in a way I’ve never known before.
Can I say no to my smoking hot ex to save my career or will playing with fire mean I’m going to get burned again?
An addictively spicy second-chance, forced-proximity romance perfect for fans of Hannah Grace, Stephanie Archer, and Amy Daws.
This story has a FMC who is secretly hiding that she's a firefighter (and has dropped out of business school) who comes face to face with her ex, a reporter set to do a feature piece on her roll at the station. He hurt her badly when they broke up under strained circumstances, but the heat is still there. How do they work together on the piece? How can he win her over and get her back into his life? How can he deal with his jackass brother who is also a firefighter?
The narration was good, including the steamy bits. I enjoyed the interaction between the MC's, but their interaction would be bland without the amazing side characters. They allowed the MC's to have depth and to really show the deliberation between forgiveness and pain. They also helped both MC's come to terms with their secrets, allowing openness between the characters at the end. HEA.
3.75/5 stars Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an eArc of this book in return for an honest and willing review!
This book was so cute! I loved our main characters from the very start and only continued to love them, and even the side characters, even more throughout. I especially loved the found family that you could feel build up during this book and I really hope that the hints of a potential sequel couple is correct cause I already wanna root for them SOOO hard!!
Our MC's both come from vastly different families but both carry the same heavy weight of expectations that they can't bare to deliver on, instead choosing to follow their own heart in their careers much to the disappointment of their families. I have to say I absolutely loved that this book didn't shy away from not accepting familial expectations as a lot of people deal with this and may not be confident enough to step away from the wants of their family.
If there's one thing that's a MUST in second chance romances, its the tension in the will-they wont-they situations and I can say that this book delivered with that amazingly! Knowing they still want each other so bad but not knowing if they could bare to go through their heartbreak a second time if anything ever went wrong again. I loved seeing our MCs work past this together despite the difficulties and insecurities they faced both together and as individuals!!
I ended up binging this is one day so it was definitely keeping my attention! The plot flowed really well and at the perfect speed - there are no parts that I felt dragged to long or were too rushed. My only complaint is that I do wish we got to know a little bit more about Savannah and Brodie personally that wasnt entirely relevant to the plot, just to allow me to get even more attached to them as characters.
The narrators delivered the story perfectly! I genuinely couldnt have asked for anything more from them. A lot of dual narrated audiobooks can feel a little bit awkward when the male is completing female lines in their POVs etc. but I can say that in this instance that wasnt the case! They both expressed emotion clearly and it was easy to understand and tell how the characters were feeling throughout.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a fun second chance romance that has the perfect amount of plot and romance!
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette UK - Bookouture for providing me with this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
First, I was really drawn into this book and start to a series. I have not read a lot of firefighter books and the cover, graphics, cheeky title all interested me.
The premise is also well thought out. A woman firefighter main character is unique on its own. Plus a past love interest covering interest stories at her fire station. Then added context of family drama, secret identity, lies (even if well-intentioned), danger, postering, and a whole cast of characters - makes this for a really intriguing read.
What worked well was the world-building and tension. The fire station is in distress and needs good publicity. Savannah is a newer fire fighter and still looking to prove herself, and a background no one really knows. Brodie is a hard-working journalist, up for a promotion, dealing with a family that will never approve of his choices. Savannah and Brodie have history. Brodie's brother also works at the same fire station and has secrets of his own. There is tension and converging story-lines and I really like that this book wasn't just a meet-cute kind of story. There are potential consequences to all of their choices and more of Savannah and Brodie's history is revealed over time as this becomes a bit of a second-chance love story.
What did not work well was Savannah and Brodie's connection or reconnection. Without giving too much away, Savannah and Brodie have history and the amount of pain and hurt there was not fully addressed to my satisfaction. Mistakes were made that had lasting affects and I don't think that was explored enough. Maybe I was looking for more angst or more conflict but it seemed almost like insta-love but it's not. I also think the breach of trust with Savannah's dad needed more attention. In an effort to have a HEA, some prominent conflicts were glanced over.
As for the audiobook - it was really well done. The narrators Katie Beudert & Davis Brooks did an excellent job, playing the main characters as well as all of the side characters, and doing a nice job with dual POV. The production quality was great and how I prefer audiobooks - no extraneous noises or sound effects. Just quality acting/reading, good chapter transitions, and clear articulated speech.

Quick Summary: A writing things right, second chance romance
My Review: Play with Fire by by Sophie L. Henderson is book #1 in the Vancity Fire series. It is an "addictively flirty and spicy second-chance romance." It is scheduled for release on 2/24/26.
About the Book: "As the only woman in the fire hall, I’ve worked hard to earn my crew’s respect. But my plan to pass probation without drama goes up in smoke the moment my ex-boyfriend...makes me the star of his latest feature."
In My Own Words: A female firefighter with something to prove to herself unexpectedly reunites with her ex who has a story to write and a story to tell, concerning the one that got away.
About the Characters: What a fantastic introduction to what promises to be a fluffy, emotionally charged series. I loved the setup, the characters, and the stories that were unfolding right in front of me. In terms of the featured couple - Savannah and Brodie - my heart felt for them. In spite of all that happened to them, they still could not/would not quit each other the second time around.
About the Conflict: The puppet master was cruel and manipulative. I did not see what he did coming. Not even a little. The other conflict elements were par for the course and expected. Still, they made for an interesting listening experience. Everything was well placed and tied together in a way that made sense.
About the Audiobook: Play with Fire was narrated by Katie Beudert and Davis Brooks. This duo injected just the right amount of tension, angst, and heart into the story. Their tones, timing, and rhythm were suited well to what was going on.
My Final Say: I adored this story. It came at the right time for the mood I was in. It was light, flirty, fun, and sweet with a touch of spice. I liked the main characters and the backstory of both. I also liked the supporting cast of characters (well, most of them). The antagonist did what he was supposed to do. (I could say more, but I'd better not.) All in all, it was a good read.
Other: Readers who enjoy the following tropes will like this story.
Appreciation is extended to the author, to the publisher (Bookouture Audio), and to NetGalley. Thank you so very much for providing access to an ALC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. It was a pleasure to review. I look forward to reading more books in this series, in addition to becoming better acquainted with this writer's work.
This book was fun and easy to listen to, even though the book covered a couple serious topics as well. It was definitely also spicier than I was anticipating. I enjoyed the main characters, and was amused by some of the side characters. There were a couple characters that were jerks to such a comical degree that they seemed kind of one-dimensional though. However, their presence was used sparingly, so it didn't really detract from the story. Similarly, there were a number of coincidences in this book that had the potential to feel contrived, but it was still easy to go with the flow and just enjoy the story.
I thought the narration was really well done. Katie in particular did a great job as the female lead - there were multiple spots where I felt like the emoting really highlighted the character's energy and enthusiasm.
As an aside, I think this might be the only rom com I've seen that has mentioned a woman's triceps when describing the characters, so it was nice to see at least a small departure from some of the normal tropes from characters' appearances.
The one quibble I had is that there were some spots where the tension between characters was resolved in a way that felt a little rushed to me. Particularly at the end, I wanted to see a little more of a journey to solving things, and characters that take a little time to change positions, rather than turning on a dime. The ending wasn't bad, and there were elements of it that I enjoyed, but it fell a little flat to me, and I thought it could have been developed a bit more.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the ARC.
There’s something special about firefighters. What a career, such bravery and fearlessness and Savanna was quite the inspiration, a real powerhouse of a woman! I love Savanna and respect her determination to follow her dream. This book kept me entertained throughout, I had a really good time and it gave me plenty of chuckles, there were quite a few witty moments.
Then Brodie comes along, a hot ex, who she has never got over. Listening to the two of them thrown together in an awkward situation and guessing how they are going to navigate it kept me interested and wanting to know more. I really liked both of the characters and was confused as to why they’d parted ways, but it all unfolds in perfect fluidity through the book.
I saw both Savanna and Brodie as loyal, determined and kind and was willing them a happy ending and that the forced proximity would not break them. They have great chemistry and I loved how the story provided enough information to understand their history but didn’t focus on the past. That is a big tick from me. There are some spicy scenes portraying their attraction to one another, which was enough to give a reflection of their feelings and compatibility.
The book shares generational constraints and expectations. It has a nice balance of characters and typical banter that you’d expect. I would be more than happy to read the next in the series, if there is one.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publishers who allowed me an ARC copy of this book. Much appreciated.
Second Chance Romance? Check Firefighter Romance? Check Humor and Spice? Check, check, CHECK!
About the book: Savannah (Sav) and Brody have history. When Brody is tasks to write an article about the fire department Savannah just so happens to be the subject for the article. Ever since he broke her heart 3 years ago she has made so changes and has some secrets from her family. Brody is also holding onto a secret.
My Review: I absolutely loved "Play With Fire"! This was my first time reading a book by Sophie L. Henderson, and listening to a book narrated by Katie Beudert & Davis Brooks. I found their voices to be perfect for their characters, and loved the dual narration. The pacing of the story was quick, perfect for a road trip (I struggled to turn it off when I got to my destination). This is such a well written book! There is plenty of humor, and the spice was so good. I really loved the relationships between the main characters and their families. I highly recommend this one!
This title is scheduled for release on 02/24/2026

Rating 3.5 stars, I was very excited to get a story with a Female firefighter as the main character. I wanted to see the female character be the strong, courageous one for a change. Savannah is that character and we see that because she dropped out of grad school to become a firefighter. She also has an attitude, that she doesn’t care what other people think and doesn’t let other people control her. The main figure is her father thinking he can make decisions for her regarding her career and her future.
Then comes Brody. Brody’s and Savannah’s break-up in college feels to me like it could have been easily avoidable. Rooted by manipulations and insecurities, while it is a situation that doesn’t make sense to me at hand. The article Brody was sent to do on Savannah was practically like fate bringing them together again.
There are some parts to me that felt a bit long, mostly in the beginning but it came around and I really enjoyed the ending between Brody and his dad and learning why Savannah really wanted to become a firefighter. The narrators are both fantastic, great ones for this exact story. If you find these tropes to be something you’d enjoy then this audiobook might be a good one for you to listen to.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. It was a cute little story. I learned a lot of the types of fires and the importance of community fire departments compared to the metropolitan fire departments. I am a sucker for second chance romance and this book didn't disappoint. I enjoyed how the MMC was able to stand up for himself to his bully parent and brother and in the end everything was a misunderstanding that could have been solved if they had just taken the chance to talk it through. I liked how the FMC was able to work through her trauma with her mother's death and make something good out of it, even though she freezed during a fire because the fire resembled what she had gone through as a little girl and loosing her mom. It was great how the author tied the FMC story and the MMC story and somehow in this universe they were destined to be together. The MMC dad saved the FMC as a little girl in the fire but her mom was lost. The MMC looks like his dad and that is what the father of the FMC couldn't stand to look at him because he reminded him of his dad. Overall a cute book. In the spice level is was ok, it wasn't off the chart but it also didn't take away from the story.

Quick Summary Loved how the story throws you straight into secrets, tension, and that irresistible pull between the characters, with Savanna juggling the weight of what she’s hiding and Brodie showing a softer side that totally wins you over. It’s a chemistry filled read about the little moments and big truths that shape who we become.
Reading Thoughts 📔The book was engaging straight up as you are hit with secrets and forced proximity in the first chapters 📔Savanna is struggling with the accumulating secrets that she is keeping from her crew and family 📔Brodie has this real vulnerable side and loved how this was woven into the scenes 📔Loved how there was this underlying chemistry pull 📔Very cute story about events that shape who we are
Words that linger 🍷“Yeah I’m basically been cock blocked by our brothers fuck up” - Brodie 🍷“I want everyone to know that I LOVE YOUR BOOBIES” - Brodie 🤣 🍷She smiles, it’s small tentative, but it’s a smile just for me. - Brodie

Narrators Wow these narrators were great … voices were spot on
Thank you NetGalley and Sophie for the early copy.
Play with Fire: Vancity Fire by Sophie L. Henderson
I really enjoyed this one. From the start, I appreciated how it flipped the typical gender roles. Brodie works the office job while Savanna is the firefighter, stepping into a career that’s traditionally male-dominated and I loved that dynamic. It felt refreshing and intentional rather than forced.
There’s definitely plenty of spice (so if that’s your thing, you won’t be disappointed), but what stood out to me most was the heart of the story. At its core, this is about two people choosing to go against expectations and carving their own paths, pursuing careers and lives they truly love, even if it doesn’t look “traditional.” That theme really resonated with me.
I listened to the audiobook, and while overall I enjoyed the narration, there were a few moments where the female narrator, voiced the male portrayal and it pulled me out of the story a bit. That said, it didn’t take away from how much I liked the book as a whole.
If you enjoy steamy romance with strong, independent characters and a role-reversal twist, this one is worth picking up. 🔥
Thank you NetGalley and Hachette UK for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is a second chance romance and the last time Sav and Brodie seen one another, they were in college working towards a writing career, but Brodie soon learns that Sav has taken a different path as SHE is his next writing piece as the only female at the Fire Department. Sav is keeping her secrets close to her chest, but will Brodie be able to discover them and help her through?
I did find discovering the reasons behind the break-up to be a bit shocking especially for who was behind it and it turned out this wouldn’t be the only time it occurred; yikes! So can love really concur all the manipulations and insecurities?
Also, Brodie giving off Clark Kent vibes, yesssssss please! All muscle and glasses? 😮💨
If you enjoy these, you will enjoy this read / audio: 🤞 Second Chance Romance 🚒 Workplace Romance 🔥 Lots of Spice 🫂 Forced Proximity ❤️🔥 Tortured Hero’s 🌟 Star-Crossed Lovers
Thank you to the author, the publisher (Bookouture Audio), and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this book as the narration was on point and really brought the story to life. I loved the narrators for this audio: Katie Beudert and Davis Brooks.
What a debut novel for Sophie! I highly enjoyed this listen especially because it’s in my hometown of VanCity! It’s so awesome to actually be able to picture the literal places that’s being described!! So fun!
I am absolutely IN LOVE with Davis Brooks voice! Yas!! I was more of this tone and pace! It was amazing! And while I do think Katie did a good job portraying Savannah, I just didn’t connect to her voice to character as much…
BUT this story was FIRE! ( pun intended 😆) because YASSSS FEMALE FIGHTER KICKIN SOME BUTT! and gah! There were moments of lull, but this book still gave me a lot of emotions. And comfort. Especially yesterday when I needed to take a break from life and just colour and listen to a good book. And this one did it for me…. And for that thanks for a lovely and comforting storying ♥️

I received an advance listening copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a quick easy read with a firefighter FMC and journalist MMC. I loved that the FMC was the firefighter in this one, it was a pleasant surprise. Their romance was cute with some tension at the beginningm, which cleared too quickly in my opinion with a dash of insta-lust, but since in the second half of the book we dive deeper into their issues I still enjoyed it overall.
The conflict was my least favourite part of the book. Her father's issue with Broadie was strange (men have such wild takes sometimes, being upset that your daughter was saved from a house fire instead of your wife is crazy to me. You sould be thankful at least one of them made it out.). Also, the tension between Brodie and his dad was crazy to me, he had awful takes about women in male dominated fields and he hardly apologies for what he said.
I adored the side characters and was actually hoping to see more of Brodie's brothers and Sav's bff, we def get more scenes with them on the second half but I would have loved to have seen more of them throughout.
Overall it was a quick and easy read, the narrators was great bringing the characters to life.
Second chance Firefighter FMC Workplace environment Contemporary romance Dual POV - 1st person
Dual Narration - Katie Beudert & Davis Brooks new to me narrators and I found them to be good voices. I liked their performance.
Savannah and Brody have history. When Brody is tasks to write an article about the fire department Savannah just so happens to be the subject for the article. Ever since he broke her heart 3 years ago she has made so changes and has some secrets from her family. Brody is also holding onto a secret. Throughout the writing of the article things come to light and these two find their way back to each other.
This is a good book. I loved that the FMC was the firefighter and a strong female lead. Brody is very different than his family, opting for the journalist life, which his dad does not exactly approve of.
Overall, this is a easy listen. I think if it had been duet narration it would have given it just that extra something. However it was an enjoyable listen regardless.
This book was cute and unique. I’m a sucker for second chance romances. I loved that Savannah was a female firefighter. She’s tough and strong. The premise was fun. The pacing during the first half was a little bit slow at times. Their attraction to each other was a bit much at times. The writing kind of felt like a lust fueled teen wrote some of the scenes. I did like the characters, but I didn’t feel a strong connection to them. The spice was solid and fun. I loved the theme of the story. Both characters have expectations set for them by other people and they have to prove that they can carve their own path. Brodie’s lack of confidence kind of drove me crazy at times. Although the character growth for both Savannah and Brodie was decent. The cover is amazing. The narrators did a decent job bringing this story to life. The second half of the story was definitely better than the first half. All in all, I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I received this book from Bookouture Audio and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
4.5 stars This is a fun, entertaining, good read. I was enthralled with these characters and their story from start to finish. It’s one of those books that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go. I loved the found family and the DNA family aspect of the story – both playing important roles for the main characters and the overall story. I enjoyed the romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and get into. I cannot wait to read more from this author.
I enjoyed the audio version of this book and the narrators.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
3/5 ☆ I received this ALC from NetGalley in exchange for review. This was a dual narration by Katie Beudert, Davis Brooks. The narrators were fine. This wasn’t my favorite. It is a second chance romance and I was put off that she forgave him too easily. The steamy scenes were simultaneously too much and lackluster and added nothing, they could have been omitted/reduced frequency.. Not to mention… the toothbrush sharing… eww Other than those details and the book being too long, it was fine. I liked the side characters and the overall resolution was cute and convenient, I do love an HEA. Overall it was fine for what it was. I was just expecting more character development, more relationship development. This is great if you’re looking for spice second chance romance with an HEA.
I enjoyed this book so much! Second one in a row where the spice hit much more than I originally anticipated!
Savannah and Brody both have terrible fathers and the reason for their initial split made me so angry and broke my heart for them. I love how life brought them back together and after a little push and pull they were all in on making it work again. The 3rd act made my rage, ugh! Thankfully Savannah and Brody have great friends and family that helped them through it together!
Katie Beudert and Davis Brooks narrate this book and they did a fantastic job! This was my first time listening to them and I am excited to listen to them again in the future!
Thank you, Bookouture Audio for this advanced copy of this audiobook! I look forward to the rest of the series!
I listened to the audiobook version of this story and it was such a fun ride. The connection between Savannah and Brodie felt completely undeniable, like they were meant to circle back to each other no matter what. I loved the tension and buildup to their relationship and when the spice finally hit, it was like fireworks. The romance itself was sweet and the vulnerability shown by both main characters felt genuine. Both of them dealing with issues with their parents and how the past affected both relationships was perfectly portrayed. The narration by Katie Beudert and Davis Brooks was excellent. They brought the humor, the vulnerability and great chemistry.
I’m a sucker for a good second-chance romance and this one had a fun story, a little twist and a lot of heat. Savannah East (Sav) and Brodie Holt were college sweethearts both walking away with broken hearts. But three years later so much has changed. Both bring some serious family drama to the table and in the end they learn how to confront it all…together.
This new author and new-to-me narrators were all enjoyable and I look forward to adding them to my repertoire.
3.5/5 ⭐ 3/5 🌶️
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an ALC.
I received this as an audiobook ARC from NetGalley.
This was a cute second chance romance. It’s an easy comfort read. Perfect for a weekend binge session. I loved our FMC because she was pretty badass. In this story our FMC is working in the tough environment of Firefighting, surrounded by men but proving she can do the job. 💪🏻 This story focuses on overcoming your past, rebuilding relationships and letting yourself fall in love again.
I am definitely looking forward to the next book in this series. I can’t wait to find out which characters it will be based on!
I adored this story. A second chance romance. A chance for two people who had dated once and sadly ended in heartbreak.
Years later a chance meeting has them reaching out and finding out what happened. I love how the story had the characters lives intersect in a way I never imagined.
Love, forgiveness and an undeniable connection with some spice. I will be looking forward to the next book by this author. This was a debut. Thank you Bookouture and the author for the advanced copy. Look forward to being on tour for this fun book.
The good: I loved how the FMC was put in a job that is traditionally occupied by male leads and she rocked it. It was a refreshing take. I also appreciated her backstory.
The ok: The story was ok but there was a lot going on and much of it didn’t necessarily add substance, only bulk. It was well thought out concept, just felt a little long
The narration: I was treated to an ALC through NetGalley. While both narrators gave an ok performance, I did feel like it was a tad stiff and would have loved a little more emotion sprinkled in.
I felt that Sophie wrote not only an incredible story between the 2 of them but also between Sav and her Dad and Brody and his Dad and coping with past events and trauma.
I love a second chance romance trope and to through it in with forced proximity and forbidden love was something else!😍😍
The spice added to the book’s story and was not overwhelming so was the perfect amount for this kind of book 🔥 HIGHLY RECCOMEND! Release Date : 24th February 2026 ALC REVIEW || thank you Netgalley
I was gifted the ALC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The audiobook is 10 hours & 18 minutes, and is narrated by Katie Beudert & Davis Brooks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️ 🌶️
This story is a second chance romance with a forbidden love aspect that comes into play. There’s a lot of spicy scenes but they aren’t overly spicy. The FMC is a fire fighter which I enjoyed, most of the books I’ve read are MMC fire fighters, so it’s a role reversal and I’m here for it 👏
ARC reader - thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book! First off the audio was great and easy to follow. I really liked the story development. One thing I really liked about the book was that both the main characters relationships with their dads start to improve in the end. It gives you hope that both families will be closer for years to come. Hoping for a book two about Nix!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a nice easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I could not fault the narrators, they brought this story to life and it felt like I finished it in no time at all.
Play with fire is a second chance romance that is a little predictable and but still and enjoyable.
Second chance romance. Brodie is writing an article about her fire station focusing on her, the probie. Can they handle the forced proximity? Can they withstand the heat?
Enjoyed this book very much! Narrators are great!
Thank you NetGalley & Bookouture Audio a for giving me the opportunity to listen to this audiobook!
