The earth as we know it is changing. Each day, unknown forces are taking over the human race. Evil is growing stronger, and innocence is the victim. If not stopped, the future of humankind is bleak.
With current protection angels being stretched past their limits, a new wave of protection is being developed. A new breed of angel is being trained to fight.
Fledgling is one of them. She did not ask for this life. After living three short lives as a human, she was chosen. With a mind of an eighteen-year-old, she struggles to adapt to her new life surrounded by angelic rules.
All contact with her past life is ruled prohibited, and romance outlawed. Yet she still finds herself torn between her kind-hearted trainee friend, who has gorgeous blue wings with matching eyes, and the love of her human lives. Her human love is on the verge of either joining the angels or becoming lost to her forever. She is forbidden to intervene.
Despite her qualms, she is passionate about saving the innocent. Will she be able to place aside her struggles in order to fulfil her passion and new life, or will she become exiled from succumbing to her temptations?
Katrina is an author of several books in epic fantasy, young-adult fantasy, and a middle-grade sci-fi thriller series.
Her series include:
Dragoria: The Lost Dragon Realm - Epic fantasy
Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance - YA High fantasy
Thor's Dragon Rider - YA High fantasy (Spin-off of Valkyrie Academy Dragon Alliance but can be read separately)
The Afterlife - YA fantasy (contemporary)
The Sanctum Series - Middle-grade Sci-fi thriller
She often talks to creatures of all kinds and has a passion for animals, nature, and travel. She lives in Queensland, Australia, with her husband and has survived teaching her three children how to drive.
With the increasing population and growing evils of the world, the guardian angels are struggling to keep up and have started to recruit human souls to be angels. Those that meet the criteria are then trained to fight evil - quite literally.
The heroine of the story (unnamed for very nearly half the book) is one such recruit, She is sent on missions to protect innocent souls from evil people and to insert a conscience into their attackers so they will change their ways. But the new angel is worried about the side effects of the new conscience and this causes her to break the rules and to question if what the archangels have taught is correct.
Despite the premise, this book is neither religious nor do the angels behave exactly as guardian angels are traditionally supposed to. They are more like an angelic version of Thunderbirds as they are despatched from their secret island base around the planet to protect those in trouble. And they don't fight evil with a kind word and good deeds, these angels are trained in martial arts and are very much not afraid to use it.
This book reminded me most of a computer game where each mission granted new powers, but also the end of level opponent gets tougher. Every chapter raises the thrill another notch and the fight scenes are very impressively written and choreographed. It is like The Matrix with angels.
The characters are well written. The angels - both the new recruits and the archangels - are well formed and each has their strengths and weaknesses and are certainly not in any way perfect. The heroine in particular is someone the reader can empathise with as she struggles with the dilemmas of her new life (and her old human one). Some pages I didn't want to turn as it was clear that something unpleasant was going to happen to her. But with the help of her friends and their combined strengths they win through.
Given that the main character is female angel and that there is a romantic sub plot this might not appeal to teenage males but that would be overlooking a terrific book for a very superficial reason. The tale of a feisty angel who always does what she believes is right is ultimately a good read for anybody.
Recommended and thoroughly deserves the five stars.
I really loved the change of theme. Fledgling has a theme of action, romance and fantasy. Fledgling wasn't like the spy themed that the Sanctum series presented. It made it feel like a complete different theme which was nice to experience. I loved this one much better than the Sanctum series because it was more of my liking and age group. I adored the fight scenes that happened through out the book. It made me feel like I was there watching them. I also loved the fact that they had died and come back as kick-butt angels that fought crime. They are just like Guardian Angels. I rated this a 5 star because it was outstanding also like the Sanctum series and a very good read.
I received this book from the author with the understanding that I would write an honest review.
If I could imagine a world where angels reside, this would be it!
Fledgling (Afterlife, #1) took me to a place where probability lives and it was so exciting! I only got up when I was forced to. I loved the vivid descriptions that placed me right on the edge of the fight scenes or free falling with my wings folded as I rush dangerously close to slam into the earth.
It was well worth the read. Katrina skillfully put me right in the story and I enjoyed every breathtaking moment.
T'was a great way to spend mother's day! Looking forward to other books in the series.
This book was a fantastic read! It has a quite literally colourful cast of characters, and a plot that moves at a nice pace, while keeping you guessing about what will happen next. I recommend it to fantasy lovers who enjoy angels vs demons stories with a bit of romance thrown in.
*Note: I was given a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but this in no way influenced the contents of my review, nor did it affect the rating I decided to give the book.
Yet again another incomplete book segment. It doesn't stand alone. It does have one redeeming feature. It is set in an interesting universe. The characters are a tiny bit cardboard-ish. To the point that I am uninterested in following them further.
Fledgling brings the reader a classic confrontation of good versus evil. Fledgling and her peer angels in training have just completed the equivalent of Angel Boot Camp under the expert eyes and critical discernment of archangels. They faced tough challenges in training and did well. The protagonist, Fledgling left life as a human at age 18. She has a somewhat idealist view of the world and is inclined to find the best in others. Fledgling’s first assignment is to protect an Innocent, and intercept a guilty party who is attempting to harm the innocent. Details instructions are giving by the Archangel Michael. Each of the new angels is instructed to thwart an attack, physically subdue and then insert a conscience into the evil one. By design, this will be the role for each mission.
Problem is, Fledgling who has the ability to read minds, attempts to find some good in the evil ones she confronts. Inserting a conscience is intended to mentally maim the evildoer, making the world a safer place. Each training is given explicit instructions. Each fledgling is expected to follow instructions or be sent to the abyss. Expect a romantic interlude here and there. This is one example of Fledgling taking personal license in lieu of adhering to angelic policy.
Fledgling and her friends, complete mission after mission, each mission more difficult than the previous one in this fast paced, rapid page turner of an action-adventure fantasy novel. Fledgling has some misadventures along the way in part because she chooses to do some things her way. If It weren’t for some special gifts, she may not have been given some leniency that helps propel her angelic career forward. Expect an epic confrontation somewhere in the story.
This is the first book by Author Katrina Cope that I’ve read, but I’m pleased to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I encourage anyone who enjoys a good action-adventure novel to read, Fledgling.
I received an advance copy in exchange for this review.
A completely unique story and super thrilling read.
The longer review:
Fledgling is very captivating and hooked me from the beginning. The plot instantly stood out as unique and is different remind me of anything I have read before. Quick spoil free plot- Murdered girl turned archangel in training on quests to save innocents by mind dumping conscious(es) into evil doers. Cool, right? Author Katrina Copes spin on angels was a real refresher on you typical archetype.
Its all about angels, but I would call it christian fiction. This is definitely a 13 and up read due to gruesome fight scenes.Cope really paints each scene very vividly in your brain, and that includes very detailed fight scenes. You can definitely feel the action jump off the page. The bone crunching and cartilage ripping pushed my (relatively low) limits for that kind of action sequence, some will like the realness of it, the faint of heart might, well… faint.
The main angel (no name dropping, kind of a mini spoiler. You’ll understand when you read it) is likable in that annoying kind of way. Her haste and haphazard choices really turn the pages. I can tell if I loved not liking her, or hated liking her. Either way she kept the story going.
Bottom Line:
Great scenes, excellent action. Highly entertaining, very engaging page turner. Could be the start to a a very worth-reading series.
Where the book lost a half star:
Main angel was the most real feeling character, but she became a bit one tracked, especially in her decision making. One male angel had some decent enough depth. The rest of the small character cast were ambiguous (some by design) or felt very one dimensional.
The gruesomeness pushed the limits a bit. Like I said above, some will love it.
I enjoyed this great ebook of good versus evil and how these fledglings had become a team in one point of this story and helped protect those that St. Michael the fighter and defender of what's good against the evil imps of Satan who has used once innocent citizens on earth become evil. A. very good and interesting and yet very clean and wholesome type of ebook that I would gladly recommend to anyone young or older according to what a parent feels their child may be ready to read it as yet though. A great Christian novel! For these reasons I have shared I believe it needs a five star rating. I received this ebook for free and have now given it an honest review. Great work Katrina! By Angela
Received from Katrina for review as I have read all the Sanctum series so far.
This was a big change into the realms of Fantasy for Katrina and I found it a good direction to go in,and I feel that this has been written very well and all the characters are really well thought out and I have a good feeling that there a lot more ways to go with this series and I hope that this is the case.
All in this was very good and I am looking forward to reading the next one.
Fun book. In Fledgling we find the common tropes of coming of age novels combined with action and a strong female protagonist--and angels. I liked the first person point of view; I felt as if I were pulled into the world of an angel in training.
In spite of the angels, I felt that the plot held together. Cope does a wonderful job manipulating suspense without revealing too much.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal).
This was an interesting read. I loved the action and the concept of this story. I noticed a few grammar and spelling errors, but no big deal. The romance and descriptions of blue's bulging muscles were a bit cheesy, but some people are into that. The fight between good and evil was definitely intriguing and the ending made me want to continue on to the next book.
Amazing, Outstanding this book is just wonderful everyone should read it, it is full of action and has a side of romance it is a book unlike any others. The action just keeps on going and going it just never stops! What I am asking is when will the next one come out because I really just want it now.
I love this book, it is about the eternal fight between good and evil-angels and demons, an excellent twist and new frontier for the author. The plot is stark, real with many twists and turns. This is an action book like no other and the characters are real. I hope this book is a start to a new series and if so, I look forward to reading the next in line. Well done Katrina!
The idea has promise, but the execution is sorely lacking. The characters are one-dimensional and the story is full of coming-of-age tropes: -Female lead that can't seem to follow rules? Check. -The female lead is inexplicably more powerful than her compatriots? Check. -Budding love triangle? Check. -Authority figures with unbending, unexplained, and seemingly arbitrary rules? Check.
Ms. Cope needs a solid editor. Plenty of punctuation and word use problems. In one chapter the word "keen" is used like 9-10 times. For the first half of the book the narrative is jerky and reads more like a series of loosely connected short stories. The repetition of the idea of "inserting a conscience is helping the Archangels fight a war" gets old real quick.
In short, it's predictable and lacking any real excitement.
What an amazing story. It has Angels and Demons. Fighting and drama. It was so jammed packed that it kept me glued to it. I love the characters and their personalities. You can feel their personalities throughout the entire story. The fledgling and her two friends are learning as they go. The mix well together and it is great to see their friendship develop more. The descriptions are vivid as they allow you to see so much more easily the events that are occurring in the story. This is an absolute must read and it doesn’t disappoint. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
“Fledgling” is a well-developed tale that gives the reader the best of both worlds, angels and demons, good vs. evil. Add the spice of a fledgling angel just learning the ropes and expected to live by code that you may not believe in. Now you have an exciting tale that is an entertaining read. I loved this tale and looking forward to the next book. . I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily
This was an excellent reader! I enjoyed that the angels had a conscience even with bad guys?(demons,as it turned out) If the whole series is like the first book, then sign me up as a follower! I can’t wait to read the next book! Do yourself a favor and take a chance-read this book!! You won’t be disappointed.
I liked the story and the characters. It has an interesting premise in that these young men and women were innocents who were murdered over several lives and now get to serve as angels to protect others. There is a good mix of action and romance.
These angels are kick-butt bad asses with hearts of gold. They have tendency to follow their hearts rather than the rules. Great imagination Katrina! Thanks and keep writing! (Avoid if you can't handle some blood and guts.)
Angels, demons, protecting the innocent. It has all the components of a good series. For me this book has a lot of set up and there are parts about the leaders that bother me. I need to read the second before deciding if I like it or not.
When I started this book, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. But as the story progresses, I got hooked. There's a lot of action scenes and I feared it would end in a cliffhanger. But It did not. I recommend this book.
Interesting take on what an "angel" is expected to do when entering the world of humans. Follow along as one of the angels has concern for the evildoers when she notices they once had good within them. Fast-paced and fascinating little vignettes, including demons and zombies.
