I thought the simmer here was quite exquisite as Liam and Aurora's story unfolds and the relationship evolves. There is truly so much bubbling and brewing underneath the surface of this engaging tale. Intensity, drama, twists, emotions, action and slow burning steam are a potent and powerful combo that sucked me in and had me anxiously keeping those pages turning.

Ever since he lost his entire family when he was young, Liam has spent the last twelve years plotting his vengeance. The plan goes off without a hitch, sending his enemy's home up in flames with him inside. Marrying Donovan Blackwell's only daughter to take over his empire is the ultimate revenge. But from the start, Aurora is nothing like he expected, not the pampered princess from his years of surveillance, but a prisoner in her own home. And as much as he thinks he's better than his enemy, Liam has only created a new cage for the woman he's starting to fall for...
This is my favorite of this author's writing yet! The character development of each of the MCs was fascinating to watch. Aurora from a sheltered prisoner forced to hide her true self, to a strong woman who goes after what she wants. And Liam from cold and controlling to loving and protective. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in this exciting series!

I dont give many 5⭐️ ratings but I couldnt give it anything else.
-Its such a great, easy pace, heart warming, perfect amount of spice, the right amount of mafia, not too dark, easy to love the characters book.
-I was really hoping that after the "video chat" that they could meet in person. (Im leaving that very vague as I dont want to give away anything!)
-I cant not wait for Nick's book. Im hoping Nick and Laura fall in love but thats just me.

To Say Im hooked is an understatement. :)

The Knight's Queen is about Liam and Aurora and is told from both of their points of view.

Liam has wanted revenge for what happened to his family, and now is the time to seek it. After disposing of his enemy he takes his one and only daughter Aurora as collateral. He thinks she's been a pampered princess her whole life. However, Aurora is not as easy to handle as he originally thought.

Aurora has just went from one prison to another, and won't take this laying down. She will fight for her freedom. The more Liam and Aurora are around each other, real feelings start to develop between the two.

Can the two of them get through everything that is thrown at them? Will they get their happy ending? I enjoyed getting to know these characters, and see how they grew from the beginning of the book to the end. I'm excited to continue on with these side characters!

The Knight’s Queen is the 1st book in the Eternal Checkmates Series A Dark Enemies-to-Lovers Romance by C. Hallman.

This book wrapped me up and enthralled me and I just ate it up. From the moment that opened The Knight’s Queen, C. Hallman pulled me into this dark shadowy world, simply enthralling me and in typical C. Hallman fashion, this book refused to let me go and it’s still living rent free in my head.

Aurora’s journey is one that hit me harder than I thought an FMC’s journey could ever hit me. I simply loved watching her go from this pawn that’s used for other people’s uses to stepping into her own power as the queen she was always meant to be was absolutely stunning. Aurora is strong, quiet, resilient, intelligent that continues to build over time and I absolutely loved watching her reclaim all the pieces of her life piece by piece. There was something so gratifying about an FMC who not only learns how to survive but learns how to turn that survival into strength and courage.

Liam completely wrecked me in all the best ways. He started off as this cold, calculating MMC who is completely driven by revenge, but slowly as the story progresses, we see the real layers of his characters begin unfolding. Then there’s the tension between who Liam is and who Aurora makes Liam desire long to be creates this constant push and pull that keeps you enthralled, longing to read more and more, wanting to know what happens next. The relationship between Liam and Aurora is intense, messy, and it’s filled with this delicious kind of deep dark obsession that forces you to feel everything that Liam and Aurora are feeling.

And then there’s the chemistry between Liam and Aurora. And let me tell you, the chemistry is out of this world. The way that C. Hallman used the forced proximity and forced marriage tropes so perfectly and you can tell that every interaction between these two carries weight. You can tell that they start off with hatred brewing between them and slowly it shifts, and slowly it begins to shift into something so much deeper, turning into something so much more dangerous, and it turns into something ultimately more consuming. This isn’t a soft or easy love, but you can tell that it is powerful and it is a love that is hard won.

Then there’s the backdrop of the organized crime that adds so much depth and tension. Every step that Liam takes is one that you can tell is strategic, feels like a game of chess where a single wrong move could bring the everything tumbling down destroying all his plans. And through everything, the found family element brings just the right amount of warmth to balance all the darkness.

I found The Knight’s Queen to be this gritty, emotional, and completely addictive story. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll love a great story with enemies-to-lovers, high stakes, morally grey characters, and a slow-burn romance that will burn you over and over again before it explodes, then this is the book you’re searching for and trust me, this book is going to own you.

This book pulled me in right from the start with it's dark world setting and it immediately grabbed me and threw me into this world of organized crime and dark romance. I liked the FMC's (Aurora) journey and background. She is so strong and quiet, yet resilent for all that she has been through. It was so beautiful to see her grown from a "pawn" and basically nothing, to the absolute queen she became while she reclaimed her life. I loved her strength and determination, even after everything.

Liam (MMC) is a dark, brooding character. He is cold and calculating and is hell bent on revenge. He doesn't care about anyone, until Aurora. Slowly, he starts to unravel from the darkness, and their relationship becomes very intense. Their chemistry is really unmatched, and the way that the author uses forced proximity and forced marriage in this book are really perfect. They start off hating each other, and slowly it shifts to something deeper and very dangerous and powerful. Their love is very much earned!

I have always had a soft spot for mafia romance - not sure why. I love the tension and the strategies these types of books have. It feels like with one wrong move, everything can come tumbling down and destroy everything. The world-building here is wonderful!

I found this book to be emotional and raw, and also totally addictive! Forced proximity is one of my favorite tropes, and C. Hallman does it tremendously in The Knight's Queen! You should read it today!

✨️ARC REVIEW 5/5⭐️

“It’s just the beginning, Aurora.”

The Knight's Queen, book one of the Eternal Checkmates series, was absolutely fantastic! The characters, the plot, the suspense, the twists and turns, the well-placed spice! I could not stop reading! I was so immersed in this story, completely consumed with finding out what would happen next!

This was a story about power and control, lies and betrayal, guilt and resentment, what it really means to have freedom. There was a sense of loneliness and a yearning to belong, doubts and fears developing into a foundation of trust.

The character development was so on point. I loved Aurora, sassy and defiant and always observant, never giving up even after being locked away and stripped of her power and the ability to choose her own life. I loved how she was the variable Liam never expected in his quest for vengeance and how she broke through the walls around his heart, allowing him to show pieces of himself with open honesty. Their story was about learning to believe in someone who truly has your best interests at heart and maybe, more importantly, believing in yourself.

I loved how possessive and protective Liam was when it came to Aurora and how hard he worked to regain her trust, to prove his intentions to her, to build something real between them despite everything they went through. Broken promises and the illusion of control beautifully transformed into hope and possibility for the future. I loved watching them both fall for the one person they never should have wanted.

This book was suspenseful and pulse-pounding, leaving me at the edge of my seat and I couldn't get enough! The side characters added just the right level of complexity to the plot and the unanswered questions leave me with no doubt in my mind that I'm going to need book two! ASAP!! There wasn't a cliffhanger per se, but trust me when I say you are going to want the next book!

"I plan on loving you for the rest of my life."

"You're kinda cute when you're mad."

Liam Knight has spent over a decade plotting his revenge against Donovan Blackwell. He ends up perfectly executing his grand plan and walking away with Donovan’s daughter as his stunning, yet unwilling, bride. Aurora Blackwell has been locked away her entire life. After being pulled from the clutches of her tyrant father, she ends up in another cage. While she spends her captivity plotting her escape, she starts to realize she enjoys her captor’s company and lines start to blur. However, when she learns of Liam’s deceit, can their connection be repaired?

This was my first book by the author, and I will certainly be picking up more of their work. I am still quite new to darker romances, but this one was quite palatable for me. Surprisingly, I kind of expected a bit more darkness considering the content warnings - or maybe that says something about me being so amenable to Liam. This was a very quick read and had a nice amount of conflict - I just wish there was a bit more high stakes with the conflicts or that they were not resolved as quickly. The spice in this book was my favorite aspect of the story. I really liked to see Liam and Aurora’s blossoming connection but felt that it could have been focused on a bit more to solidify their relationship (especially that crossover moment from enemies to lovers). The pair gave me whiplash the way they were so hot and cold with each other, but their ending was worth it. While I am all for Liam’s tough side, I loved to see the sweetest shine when it came to Aurora.

I was instantly sucked into this book and couldn’t put it down until I was finished. Dark romance. Organized crime. Enemies to lovers. Forced marriage!! Ahhh. All the things that make my dark romance loving heart happy.

We have our FMC Aurora, who was basically treated as a prisoner her whole life by her Father. Kept in her room until he had some use for her.

Our MMC, Liam has been working toward his revenge on Auroras father ever since the day he lost everyone he loves.

The character growth of these two was everything. (Although I felt like punching Liam on more than one occasion) Liam comes out of his hate fueled shell … eventually. And Aurora tries to find out what her new normal looks like out of the hands of her Father.

The chemistry between these two was off the charts. From hating one another, to a level of tolerance, to growing a real connection and having feelings develop. It was a slow moving train. But was perfect for these two. Especially given the background.

Angst, emotional, and addictive. An amazing read with side characters that I fell in love with as well! I can not wait to see what C. Hallman has coming out next!

Shout out to Quirky Heart PR and C. Hallman for the ARC!

I am absolutely hooked! The whole story felt very balanced and was easy to follow the plot.

If you are looking for a dark romance that delivers revenge, power, obsession, and a romance that burns just as fiercely as it destroys. Then this is one that should be added to your TBR immediately!

Liam is ruthless and completely committed to his endgame, but Aurora? She’s was a surprise. Watching her evolve from a sheltered pawn into a woman who understands her power and isn’t afraid to use it was everything.

Aurora’s journey stole the show for me. She starts as a pawn for two men, trapped and underestimated, but her transformation into a true queen is powerful, captivating, and so satisfying to witness. She doesn’t just survive Liam’s world she reshapes it.

Their relationship is messy, intense, and full of tension that kept me up all night because I HAD to finish reading! The push and pull between them, the blurred lines between control and desire, it’s dark enemies to lovers romance perfection.

This story tested my emotions especially towards the end and I can't wait for the next one!

This was a fabulous read and I love Cassy’s dark romances. She does such a great job pulling you in and keeping you hooked until the end. I am always left wanting more. Aurora and Liam’s story in an enemies to lovers/revenge story. Liam has been waiting for years for getting vengeance for his family’s death. Liam gets it by having his enemy give him his daughter. That daughter is, Aurora, and she is the pawn is his game. He uses her to get all of her father’s money and businesses. Aurora hates what has happened and doesn’t want Liam around her. While their relationship starts as hate, read to watch their story evolve into something else. If you love morally gray antiheroes, with a heroine who fights him at every turn, this book is for you. It is a dark, revenge book that has dub-con, forced marriage, captive, drama, and some twists I didn’t see coming. I loved almost all the characters. There were some that I just wanted to whop upside the head and more. This was a really good book and I can’t wait for Nick’s story. Buckle-up buttercups, you’re in for a dark, fun, and wild ride. 😈

If you’re walking into The Knight’s Queen expecting a soft romance, this isn’t that story. It’s sharp, morally gray, and built on power, control, and survival. The book leans fully into dark romance territory and it doesn’t apologize for it.

Aurora Blackwell’s life begins as a gilded prison, but the moment Liam Knight enters, that cage doesn’t disappear it simply changes hands. The premise is intense from the start: she is taken as leverage in a calculated takedown of her father’s empire.

That setup alone tells you what kind of story this is. Consent, autonomy, and control are constantly in flux, and the narrative doesn’t soften those edges. If anything, it uses them to build tension.

The Knight’s Queen is unapologetically dark. It deals with heavy themes forced proximity, power imbalance, trauma and doesn’t attempt to make them comfortable.

That said, it succeeds in delivering a character-driven story where resilience and transformation take center stage. Aurora’s evolution, in particular, carries the narrative and gives it purpose beyond shock value.

From hatred to love. From captivity to choice. From pawn to queen.

The Knight's Queen is the first book in the Eternal Checkmate series that follows Liam Knight and Aurora Blackwell.

Their story is an enemies-to-lovers, forced marriage, mafia romance that's dark, edgy, possessive, messy, dangerous, intense, emotional roller-coaster ride.
I loved the stark contrast between her innocence and his ruthlessness and how they interact, grow and evolve as the storyline unfolds. She had a quiet resilience and determination as she fought for survival and in that she turned that fight into strength. She evolved from a pawn to a queen.
He was cold calculating and driven by vengeance. Then everything starts changing the more he interacts with Aurora he begins to question the deal he made and the people closest to him. It's a captivating read that has twist, turns, betrayals and a surprising cliffhanger that will lead to the next book in the series.

The Knight’s Queen follows Liam Knight and Aurora Blackwell. It is listed as a dark romance, but it didn’t really feel like a dark romance, although it did have a few things that might trigger people so check the list first.
Liam has spent most of his life planning his revenge against Donovan Blackwell, carefully setting plans into motion, and when everything falls into place he takes his chance.. getting rid of Donovan, while also gaining a bride in Aurora in order to take over her father’s businesses. Aurora has lived her entire life under her father’s control. A pawn for him to use when he needs her, and a victim to abuse when she does something to displease him. When Liam basically kidnaps her, she only hopes for a little freedom, but discovers a whole new prison, only slightly less abusive. But when Liam begins to care for her, all his plans begin to crumble, and he finds himself wanting to know more about Aurora, wanting to keep her safe and by his side.

The Knight’s Queen by C. Hallman is one of my favorite mafia reads so far. Easily a 4.5⭐️
This is a gritty, emotionally charged dark mafia romance that pulls you in from the very first page and refuses to let go. Aurora’s transformation from a controlled pawn into a powerful, self possessed queen is deeply compelling, while Liam’s slow unraveling from a cold, revenge driven man to someone capable of feeling adds layers of tension and depth to their dynamic. Their chemistry is intense and consuming, with a perfectly executed slow burn enemies to lovers that makes every moment feel earned.

The organized crime backdrop and high stakes revenge plot give the story a constant edge, while the found family elements add just enough warmth to balance the darkness. Though some scenes may be heavy for sensitive readers, the emotional payoff and character growth make it a standout in the dark romance genre. Be sure to read the trigger warnings for this!

The Knight’s Queen was my first read by C. Hallman, and I was honestly so impressed with the writing. It felt incredibly descriptive and emotional in a way that really pulled me into the story.

Aurora and Liam are both characters shaped by difficult pasts, and the author does a beautiful job of bringing those emotions to life. You can feel their pain, their growth, and the weight of everything they’ve been through — which made their journey together that much more impactful.

I will say the pacing felt a bit slow for me at times. However, I also think that slower buildup was necessary, especially considering Aurora’s background and the depth of her story. It allowed everything to unfold in a way that felt authentic rather than rushed.

Overall, this was a strong read for me, and I’m definitely invested in where this series is going next. I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book!

What a fantastic read! It hit some of my favorite tropes, especially enemies to lovers and forced proximity, and I was hooked the whole time. The tension between the main characters kept me fully invested in their story. Aurora is in a difficult situation and is dealing with a lot emotionally, but she remains determined to be more than others expect of her. I really enjoyed seeing her growth develop as the story went on. Liam Knight-I was not happy with him at first-men not catching signals, especially with the way he handled certain situations, but the dynamic between them kept getting better as the story progressed. I liked seeing Aurora turn the tables at times. Overall, I really enjoyed the characters, the pacing, and everything else mixed in throughout the story.

This book was full of painful pasts, being caged up, and learning to grow. The author does a beautiful job of growing the characters from their painful pasts to the character growth beyond imagination.

Aurora goes from one cage to another. First being held prisoner by her father to now her captor who wants revenge on her father. She is tough, sassy, brilliant, stubborn, and out to fight for her life. Liam wanted revenge and taking Aurora was a way for him to get it. He is dark, possessive, obsessive, and dangerous. But what he doesn’t expect, his feeling for her to develop.

These two were at odds from the beginning. They hated one another, but you could start to see that slowly fade. The character growth for both of them was amazing and I really enjoyed watching them develop. They had to learn how to trust one another and believe that someone may just care enough.

The Knight's Queen is a suspenseful and well-written story. I loved it and couldn't put it down.

Aurora has been kept prisoner by her father for many years. He has arranged for her to be married to a man who is older than her for business reasons. Liam has vowed revenge against Aurora's father since he lost everyone. He gets the chance to invade Aurora's family's home and takes Aurora as his captive. She is stronger than he thinks she is and doesn't back down from Liam.

I loved how Aurora was such a strong character. She didn't want to be another captive in a cage. I loved how she stood up for herself. I loved the chemistry between her and Liam. There are so many twists to the story that it will keep you guessing. It was a great way to begin a series. I look forward to more from this talented author.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This is the first book in the Eternal Checkmates series. Each book in series can be read as a standalone.
Liam has been patiently waiting and planning his revenge on Donovan for killing his entire family. He is going to take everything from him, including his daughter. Once he gets what he wants he will ship Donovan's precious daughter to Gabriel the italian mafia leader.
Aurora describes herself has a doll. Fun to play with but then put back on the shelf when not needed. Or in her case back in her cell of a room. Just when she thinks she is finally getting freedom she is shoved into another cage. Only this time she isn't alone at night.
I really enjoyed this new series and can't wait for more. I definitely didn't see the twist coming in the end.

I am not even surprised that C. Hallman wrote another masterpiece, anything she writes I will read it! She is just that good. 👌🏻
I devoured this book in a matter of hours, I couldn’t put it down!

Liam & Aurora's story is filled with tension, banter, hate, and an undeniable attraction.
This book will keep you hooked from the beginning, from the thirst for revenge to lust and love.

Aurora is not a doormat FMC, she is strong and she fights back with all she has. Seeing her coming out of her shell was amazing.

Liam fighting his feelings and his loyalties was a roller coaster of emotions, his character development was so well executed, gradually and naturally.

The plot, the characters, and the spice were top-notch! What an amazing read.

This story drew me in with its blend of revenge, power, and emotional depth. Liam's ruthless plan to destroy Aurora's father and claim her as part of his victory was intense, and I loved how the story gradually shifted from cold manipulation to something much more complex. Aurora's journey stood out the most to me; watching her transform from a controlled, caged woman into someone strong and defiant was incredibly satisfying. The tension between them, especially the enemies-to-lovers dynamic, felt genuine and believable. There were plenty of twists, betrayals, and dangers that kept me hooked. I found this story to have an emotional, suspenseful plot with strong character growth and a romance that developed in a compelling and dark way.

"The Knight's Queen," the first book in the Eternal Checkmates series, was fantastic! The captivating characters and suspense kept me reading nonstop.

The story delves into themes of power, betrayal, and the true meaning of freedom, while also touching on loneliness and the journey to trust. Aurora is a remarkable character—sassy and resilient. Even when imprisoned and powerless, she influences Liam’s quest for vengeance, helping him embrace trust and self-belief.

Their evolving relationship, marked by Liam's protectiveness and determination, adds depth to the story. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and the complexity of the side characters made it even better. I can't wait for book two! Coming out August 28, 2026.

Wow, just wow… I loved this book so much that I read it almost in "one breathe".

The Knight's Queen is a fast paced story. It kept my attention from the beginning until the very end… and still I wanted more. This book is about Aurora and Liam love story, and it is very complicated enemies to lovers story. This darkish romance starts explosively fast with the forced marriage and captivity of the h. I kept turning pages wanted to know what will happened next. The book ends with the happily ever after for this couple, but there are some loose ends and side part of the story which is not finished.

I can't wait for the next book in this series and Nick's story.

Highly recommend!

A truly captivating and slow burn love story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Liam has had revenge on his mind for years, so when he gets the chance to rid the one who destroyed his family he does so, also bags himself a wife in the process in order to acquire everything. What he didn’t expect was Aurora to be just as much of a victim in the hands of her own father as himself. She was basically a pawn and a prisoner in her own home. Slowly their relationship grows stronger as they get to know each other, she becomes stronger with his help and Liam becomes protective and a loving husband. Loved following their journey together and how well the author describes their development into a loving couple.

Aurora is that girl! Despite the abuse and trauma from her father, she retains a quiet resilience that carries throughout the story. Liam is hellbent on revenge and willing to do everything it takes to get it.

The tension and slow burn between Liam and Aurora was palpable; each turn of the page was delicious torment as they bickered and eventually fell for each other. Even when the intrigue and betrayals occur, they can't fight the feelings that shouldn't have been stirred up and worry about the other person. Oh and the spice was steamy! All of the characters were written well and made you feel an array of emotions (I'm still not over my annoyance with Selina). I can't wait for the next book!

*Huge thanks to C. Hallman and Quirky Heart PR for the copy!

The Knights Queen is a good beginning to what I hope to be an even better series. My only complaint is leaving some topics hanging. I don’t like making assumptions, but I am guessing it will be resolved in the next book, since it requires more details than what an epilogue would provide- side note, there wants an epilogue. Having said all of that, I enjoyed the main characters, Liam and Aurora. I thought they were fleshed out well, providing us with a variety of details to anchor us to them. The supporting cast, sans dear old dad, could have used more history and details, but were presented enough to evoke the appropriate emotions. I am excited to read the next installment.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What started off as revenge for Liam soon turned into something deeper. He thought he knew Aurora, but he realized she’s not the princess he assumed she was.

For Aurora, her life was spent sheltered, living in a gilded cage with her abusive and domineering father. All that changes when Liam burns it all down…literally. Aurora is determined not to go from one cage to another. Slowly, she grows into the force she was always meant to be. The road isn’t an easy one, but when she finds her inner strength and grit that was buried so deep it’s a beautiful sight to see.

This has all the things I love in a book. There’s suspense, scheming, betrayal, a compelling plot and just the right amount of spice. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
