Karter:The more I fight it, the harder I succumb to it — to him. I would do anything for him. He’s my best friend. Yet, I’m denying myself. Why? Because he doesn’t exist anymore. Never mine from the start. A dead man. That was last month’s news, but now he’s back. Collecting. Fixing. Demanding. He’s given me a choice: follow him into his madness … or lose him forever.
Casey:Struggling to pay bills was the least of my problems. When I failed a job interview at a rich teaching hospital, things spiraled. I owe this rich doctor money, but I can’t pay him. So I sell him the next best thing–my body. Never did I expect to end up as his latest fixation...
Lucas:My Fair Lady. She arrived just when I needed her most. Fragile. Provocative. Perfect. And Karter? He notices her too. The way he falters, the way he’s drawn to her–it’s intoxicating. I will claim her, shape her, fix her … and watch us all unravel. She will be mine, ours, everything I crave, everything I cannot let go. Nothing less is acceptable.
Two men. One woman. Desire devours. Obsession twist. Fixing her will leave them all forever changed…
Author note: Fixing Her is a pitch black steamy MMF Horror Tragedy, with detailed graphic content that may be disturbing for some read. Fixing Her is a Standalone.
First off, I want to preface this by explaining that this book is pitch black DARK. The FMC is graped multiple times in this book after she is essentially coerced into becoming a prisoner of our two MMCs. There are a lot of triggers in this story so if you have any, be sure to check them before you pick this one up. Dark books and triggers dont bother me, but this book could be triggering for people if they go into it blind.
This was quite a ride! The first 40% of the book is really setting up the story and our characters. I was wondering when all the dark stuff was going to happen and thought maybe this wasn't as dark as I was lead to believe that it would be... well let me tell you, just be patient - It definitely gets dark!
I absolutely devoured this! This was different from any other books that I have read in quite a while. It's got a bit of a human trafficking feel, with some dark medical procedures, deranged MMCs, and an FMC that has been caught up in a web that she cannot escape. And though there is a connection between some of the characters, I sure wouldn't call this a dark romance. There is no HEA. This is a pitch black horror novel full of depravity, evil and triggers that most authors would be too scared to put in their stories
If you like pitch black horror stories with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, well then buckle-up buttercup, check your triggers and pick up Fixing Her by F. King Hayes. It won't disappoint! It's a dark horror tragedy story that will keep you engaged and turning the page trying to figure out how it's all going to play out and wondering what is going to happen to the FMC next.
Thank you to F. King Hayes for an ARC of this book.
IMPORTANT CONTEXT & WARNING FOR ROMANCE READERS ⚠️ Please be aware that the blurb and the marketing here on GR and other places, for Fixing Her under the "Dark Romance" and "Erotica" tags is highly misleading! This book definitely crosses the line into Extreme Horror/Splatterpunk Tragedy. Before you download, know these major spoilers and content: No HEA: The female main character (FMC) does not survive; she is brutalized, broken down, mutilated and killed by the end. Abusers Walk Away Free !!! Both male main characters (MMCs) face zero legal and narrative consequences, surviving the book completely unscathed - they are her tormentors and executioners !!! Severe Misogynistic Body Horror: Includes graphic medical violation, non-consensual surgeries and permanent physical destruction of the female lead! Pure Torture Fiction: This is a tragedy meant to evoke shock and horror, entirely lacking any romantic protection or redemption found in traditional dark romance If you are looking for a dark romance with a safe ending for the heroine, please avoid this book. It is a splatterpunk tragedy masked as a throuple romance!

Um I need a day or two to mentally recover 🥴 It is dark depraved and f*cked up. I just … I am at a loss for words!!! Poor Casey was expecting pretty woman and ended up in smutty saw. This book is on the shorter side it is under 300 pages(depending on your font size) . F. King Hayes I hate to see your search history. Read this with caution I have little to no triggers and this book had me walking away multiple times
Let me be clear from the start, this is not dark romance. This is a MMF pitch-black horror tragedy with no happy ending.
From the opening pages, the FMC, Casey, is coerced into her own captivity, and what follows is an escalating descent into psychological, physiological, and emotional annihilation. The violence does not soften. The abuse does not resolve. It only grows more extreme, more isolating, more devastating.
Casey is subjected to repeated sexual assault, invasive medical procedures, and prolonged torture, both physical and psychological. What makes this book so disturbing isn’t just what happens to her, but how honestly it’s written. There is no glamor, no absolution, no rescue fantasy waiting in the wings.
And yet this is where the book becomes extraordinary. F. King Hayes writes this tragedy with such precision, care, and immersion that it feels terrifyingly real. Not distant. Not exaggerated. But possible. Like something you could read about in the news. Like something that could be adapted into a film and haunt you long after the credits rolled.
I felt Casey’s pain. Her sadness. Her determination to survive moment to moment even as her fate sealed tighter around her. The writing is so lived-in and cinematic that you don’t just observe her suffering, you inhabit it.
This book doesn’t comfort the reader. It confronts them. It asks you to witness horror without turning away. I have a very high tolerance for dark content, and this still forced me to pause. Read only if you are prepared. This is horror in its purest, most uncompromising form.
Strong Content Warning

F. King Hayes...more like F*cking Hayes...holy wow... I didn't want to like it, really. It made me question myself-giving it a 5-Star.(I mean this in the best way possible)🤣 But the emotional roller coaster I just went through reading this book...? lol Yeah, I might need a day to daze over this one.
Yea so, just when you think you’ve read it all… This was DARK. I will say it didn’t really get to pitch black territory until a little over the 40% mark. But from then on it really picked up. F King Hayes has a way of making you feel like you are actually in the room as things are happening on page. So well done. The only reason I didn’t rate this one higher is because so much was unclear and so many questions are left unanswered. I know that was intentional but I want to scream! I need clarity! Hopefully we’ll get some answers in the future. Can’t wait to continue with any of these characters!
What the hell even was this book? Nope. Not for me. Not even a little bit.
This was honestly such a struggle to get through. The plot felt nonexistent, the characters constantly confused me, and I couldn’t tell who was who half the time. The way their personalities were written and how the story was structured made it really difficult for me to understand what I was reading.
To be honest, I just didn’t like it. It wasn’t worth the amount of time I spent trying to push through, and at one point I finally said, “Enough,” and started speed-reading just to finish.
Could have been a good book if the writing wasn't so damn annoying The writing gives me a headache, and it doesn't feel like there are any proper stops. ruined my reading experience
The only reason it is not higher is because there was confusion. And the writing made me frustrated at times.
But besides that this book definitely delivers on this TW and that horror erotic front. It takes a while for anything to truly happen that makes your jaw drop. But once it starts it doesn’t let up. Each chapter brings a new handful of TW. I felt for the FMC and there were times this gave me May vibes. Which if you’ve ever seen that movie 🎥 go watch it! Other times it reminded me of the way Hostel made me feel. Stuck. Claustrophobic. Sick. Terrified. And that was the point. You are living in that horror movie right along with the FMC.
The two MMC were complex and I would have liked more. Maybe a prequel at some point with the two of them.
The author was also able to weave the story together with the long list of TW without creating shock value or parts that just didn’t make sense. I appreciate that.
Fixing Her is a dark, unsettling descent into obsession, grief, and control that fully earns its “pitch black” warning. Told through multiple POVs, the story pulls you into a twisted MMF dynamic where desire blurs with possession and love curdles into something dangerous. Karter’s emotional torment, Casey’s desperation, and Lucas’s chilling fixation create a volatile triangle that’s equal parts mesmerizing and horrifying. The atmosphere is heavy, the themes are intense, and the characters are deeply flawed in ways that feel intentional and effective. While the brutality and tragedy won’t be for everyone—and at times felt emotionally exhausting—that discomfort is clearly the point. This is not a feel-good romance, but if you’re a reader who appreciates dark horror romance that lingers long after the last page, Fixing Her delivers an unforgettable, disturbing experience.
I thought that I knew where this was going when I started this. Even at 35% through, I was so sure that I knew. I was wrong. So very VERY wrong. I finished that and still have questions. I am both floored by the events that occurred and content not asking any more questions.
The way this started with Casey falling into the laps of Lucas and Karter, I was relieved that she was getting help. Then they became something entirely different. I know it's horror but the author actually succeeded in making me cringe and read this through my fingers so many times. This was DARK, brutal, terrifying, and so heartbreaking. No HEA in sight.
I have to know more about Karter and Lucas after this though. I. HAVE. TO. KNOW!!!!
Also, all the medical terminology must've been crazy to have to look up. I guarantee the authors search history was worrisome 😅
I don’t usually give books bad ratings. I’m a “give them 5 stars” girly. But this was a HARD read and not because of the content. Yes, the content was gut-wrenching and disturbing. But the grammar was absolutely horrendous. I am honestly shocked at how many good reviews this book has. No hate to the author, but at one point, I had to ask myself if the author had even reread the book before publishing, or if there was ever an editor for this book before publishing. If you enjoy reading books with proper grammar and sentence structure, this book is 100% not for you. I can handle small grammatical errors or misspellings here and there because mistakes happen and no one is perfect. But good lord, this was BAD. The only reason I did not DNF was out of morbid curiosity for the ending and because I’m not a quitter lol.
I absolutely loved every second of this book. Even the deranged parts making me think WTF.
As always, please check your triggers. This tests ones you wouldn't think you had.
This does not have a HEA. It's far from one to be exact.
I can't imagine what all Casey endures. From her thinking she's in her own Pretty Woman movie, to being made into a doll for someone else to play with, to the point she cuts out her own tongue. Lucas and Karter are so deranged. I can't tell if they're bisexual or only gay for each other. Would love to know how they met each other.
Can't wait to see what else in store for these characters.

Hooked. Need more. Now?? Wow. 40% in is it. The 100% pitch black has entered the chat and doesn’t go anywhere. Some people see that and they’re like 40%??? The first half of this book is set up so perfect. Learning the characters and placements. I will say while I had an inkling of how this would go the depths and the descriptions were SPOT ON and had me mouth wide open sitting here like give me more?? Am I okay?? Yeah I’m where I should be😂 anyways This is a pitch black horror novel. There is no redeemable MMCs. There is NO HEA. It is worth every single second. I need more. Check your triggers and buckle up for the most gore-ified ride of your life.
This was one of the top recommendations in the dark romance group’s over on facey B, which meant I obviously bought it at lightening speed!
And once I finished slaughtered firefly, I had a chat with Hayes who told me about the interlink with this & the doctor so I knew I had to start it ASAP!
😮💨 And OMFG…what a story!!! I just LOVE how Hayes writes, it’s an instant chokehold to my heart. (I think I’m a little obsessed with her) & that’s ok because I’ve step one admitted it 😌😂
This book was DARK, ugh the things they did to Casey 😮💨 “fixing” her to be the perfect little compliant doll 😭
Lucas was deranged, sociopathic & written so well, you hate him but can’t help but be fascinated with him at the same time!
Same goes for Karter, but I absolutely love him, he’s my fav little psychopath 🤣 I couldn’t help but giggle at his nonchalance & indifference to everything. His sarcasm matches my own 🤭
This was most definitely another 5⭐️ read for me, Hayes is 100% on my auto buy author list! If you like it extreme, dark, spicy & toe curling then it’s defo one you need to pick up!! But check the triggers first of course!! 🤎
ARC Review **** Read the TW and please understand that this is not a HEA and per the author this is not a romance. Now on to my review.
To begin with ...I would not describe this book as a romance of any kind. Although other outlets may describe as an erotic horror, I would describe this more of an unhinged horror with sub plot that includes MM relations. This book is very gory and has a high amount of focus and detail on D/SV. SO reader be warned, and know these characters have NO redeeming qualities and are pitch dark black in their behaviors and tendencies.
While reading....the beginning drew me in slightly, but I found myself reading paragraphs and chapters over again because it just didn't flow to me. Certain chapter were difficult to know who was actually speaking and the plot was somewhat all over the place for me as well. This is the first book from this author I have read and I appreciate the author allowing me to be an ARC reader. I see potential in this ...but I don't think it pulled my interest in like I had hoped.
I am def not a reader that has to have a HEA, or even a full romance....but this just felt more like "shock value" to me. I am sure others will disagree and I am ok with that. I gave this 3 stars, because I do think it had an original concept...but just too many questions for me and just didn't draw me in.
Again, thank you FKH for the ARC and I do appreciate your passion and creativity.
Happy Reading all!

I am having a hard time finding words, let alone trying to put them into sentences. This book was soo deliciously dark, depraved, and just f♤€kd up I loved it!! You know when you are so sucked into a book and as soon as you finish it you know once you wrap your head around it, you'll have to read it again just to make sure you didnt miss anything? That is me right now.
This was very disturbing but I couldn't put it down. This is not meant for anyone who has not read pitch black books before. If you choose to read this please check the trigger warnings.
Fixing Her is a DARK HORROR TRAGEDY!! There is no Happy Ever After!! Please read the Trigger warnings ⚠️
ARC Review
Now that I've warned everyone, I devoured this book!! It had me hooked from the first chapter. The MMC's are definitely on another level of unhinged and i loved their dynamic!! Casey (FMC) is strong. Shes a fighter. What this woman goes through in this book is horrific. Shes held captive, raped, drugged, and the list goes on.
I still dont know how to write this review. im still processing. :) oh, the M/M sex was 🫦🔥
thank you F.King Hayes for letting me be a part of your ARC team.
Wow, so let me take a moment to gather my thoughts. I finished reading this book late last night, and as I sit here watching the gentle snowfall, I'm inspired to share my thoughts. The story was intense and unhinged, filled with depravity in all the right ways that kept me captivated. Before I started, I already knew there would be no hea, but I found myself rooting for Casey nonetheless. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. I feel truly honored to have been part of this dark and twisted journey, and I look forward to delving into more stories of this nature, full of raw, unsettling depravity. I don't know what that says about me?!.
The more Karter fights it, the harder he succumbs to it — to her. Karter would do anything for her. He’s her best friend. Yet, she’s denying herself. Why? Because he doesn’t exist anymore. Never hers from the start. A dead man. That was last month’s news, but now he’s back. Collecting. Fixing. Demanding. He’s given her a choice: follow him into his madness … or lose him forever.
Struggling to pay bills was the least of Caseys problems. When she failed a job interview at a rich teaching hospital, things spiraled. Casey owes this rich doctor money, but she can’t pay him. So, she sells him the next best thing–her body. Never did she expect to end up as his latest fixation...
My Fair Lady. She arrived just when Lucas needed her most. Fragile. Provocative. Perfect. And Karter? He notices her too. The way he falters, the way he’s drawn to her–it’s intoxicating. He will claim her, shape her, fix her … and watch us all unravel. She will be his, theirs, everything he craves, everything he cannot let go. Nothing less is acceptable.

Dedication:
For the ones who said I want it but never realized what it meant. Let’s do this properly. Turn the page for me, baby. Nice and slow.
Compliance doesn’t mean consent. Do you understand this little reader? Good, now grab a cozy seat, strap in, and watch the language.
Man is that dedication one for the ages and it really sets this book up. And I am going to set this book up for you by saying that this book is blacker than pitch black, it is so DARK that you can’t see you’re hand in front of your face. Our FMC Casey was compelled into becoming a prisoner of Karter and Lucas our MMCs who proceed to grape her several times after that.
Please I can’t warn you enough, this book has A LOT of triggers, if you have any triggers, please ensure that you read the entire trigger list at the end of this book before you start reading this book. Personally Dark Romances, dark horrors don’t bother me but I know that other people have triggers and some books could be damaging to their mental health if they don’t go into a book prepared.
I found that the first 40% of this book was really all a set up for the storyline and our characters. This part of the book really isn’t all that dark. Please, be patient, it gets dark as you get deeper into the book.
I really did devour this book, it felt as though once I got started reading, I just couldn’t put it down. This was such a different book from anything else that I have read recently. I got the feeling that there was an under current of human trafficking, some dark medical procedures, of course we have our deranged MMCs Lucas and Karter, and our poor FMC Casey who’s gotten herself caught up in Lucas and Karter’s web and no matter what she does she can’t get herself out of it.
Casey is someone who has already been living her life on the edge when she finds herself suddenly pulled into Lucas and Karter’s trajectory. Lucas and Karter – two men who are bound together by their shared history, their cruelty, and their warped sense of ownership.
Fixing Her is told the multiple POVs, we get to see through Casey’s eyes and what happens to her and what she goes through. And yet, at the same time, we get to see things through the eyes of Lucas and Karter and how each of them justifies, desires, and reshapes Casey’s suffering.
We get to learn that Lucas is this cold, methodical, and a terrifying detachment. We realize that he doesn’t rage and yet he observes, dissects, and even tries to rationalizes. He has this obsession and pure fixation on “fixing” Casey by stripping her of her own autonomy one piece at a time. Sadly, we see Lucas turning Casey into a project rather than seeing her as a person. And for me what made Lucas truly horrifying wasn’t just what he does – it’s just how calmly he believes he’s right and refuses to see any other point of view.
I found Karter to be chaos wrapped up in charm. He was volatile, sadism, and he was emotionally fractured, and he seems to be constantly craving a reaction and pain – he both give’s pain and receives it though. I found his dynamic with Casey to be not only violent and destabilizing but at the same time it was also disturbingly intimate. Karter was the perfect embodiment of both temptation and destruction and when he disappears later in the story you feel like there’s this emotional void – not only for Casey but you feel the emotional void as well.
It’s Casey’s POVs were Fixing Her truly cuts you the deepest. Casey’s internal struggle – one between resistance, numbness, survival, and then the moments of unwanted attachment – and F. King has written this story in such a way that’s raw and honestly exhausting in only the best and worst ways possible.
One of the things that F. King did right in this story is that she didn’t try to romanticize Casey’s trauma, and she didn’t try and offer Casey at the same time. She made Casey live with it, she forced the reader to sit in the reality of the ceaseless abuse, the fear and control and made us the readers face what that can do to a person’s sense of self.
Yes, there is a form of spice, a bit of chemistry between Karter, Lucas, and Casey, I can’t say that this is a romance or even a dark romance and there’s no such thing as a HEA in this book. This book is truly the definition of a pitch-black horror novel, it’s full of depravity, evil, and so many triggers that a lot of authors that most authors would be far to scared to even consider putting in their own stories.
I can promise you though, if you enjoy pitch black horror stories that have twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then buckle-up buttercup, you’ll want to pick up Fixing Her by F. King Hayes, as long as you check your trigger warnings first.
I promise you that Fixing Her is not going to disappoint. While it’s a dark horror tragedy that will keep you enthralled, keep you turning the pages, and it’s going to keep you guessing on what’s going to happen next and how everything is going to play out and what is going to happen to Casey next.
I do recommend this book. BUT, I also have to reiterate that you HAVE TO read the trigger warnings and I also understand that this book is not going to be for everyone, it is extremely dark, it’s psychologically intense, and it’s emotionally draining and yet it’s such a compelling book that is enthralling.
If you are looking for a Pitch-Black book, one about control, obsession, moral decay, and trying to survive under the most impossible circumstance then I can promise you that Fixing Her is going to be the fix you’re looking for and yet at the same time, I promise you, it’s going to be a book that’s going to challenge you.
And before you even ask, yes, this book deficiently needs a sequel and book 2 is needed and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Some of my favorite quotes are:
“Now are you ready to talk ot do I need to f*ck that attitude out of you?”
“Listen, I will not sugarcoat who I am to you, and I will pretend that I love you. You can either join me or you can f*ck off.”
“Duct tape?” Questioned as he turned around to face me. Excitement rose in my chest like a kid presented with their favorite toy.
I was the toy in this situation, eager to see what my Doctor had planned tonight.
“Duct tape. On the floor. On your back. Now.”
“Tell me, did you tie me up just to deny yourself? I thought Doctor’s didn’t get cold feet.”
“Don’t confuse permission with ownership,” “And don’t mistake restraint for weakness.”
“She is hardly broken, we should make this a new project, whoever makes her pass out the most wins…how does that sound?”
“No. That is too easy. Besides you are already up twice, so there’s no real challenge is there?”
“At least you were a good girl and swallowed all of it. Doc here would have loved to force feed you, he’s very through.”
This book was so much. never have I hated a character as much as I hate Lucas. Yet I loved the disturbing ride he took me on. I could not put this book down. I would give this book 4.75 stars!!! Loved it.
Fixing Her is not a dark romance you ease into — it throws you headfirst into violence, obsession, and psychological control and never lets up. This is a book that lives in the uncomfortable space where survival, trauma bonding, and moral collapse blur together. The story follows Casey, a woman already living on the edge, who is pulled into the orbit of Lucas and Karter — two men bound by shared history, cruelty, and a deeply warped sense of ownership. Told through multiple POVs, the narrative exposes not just what happens to Casey, but how each man justifies, desires, and reshapes her suffering. Lucas is cold, methodical, and terrifying in his detachment. He doesn’t rage — he observes, dissects, and rationalizes. His fixation on “fixing” Casey strips her of autonomy piece by piece, turning her into a project rather than a person. What makes him horrifying isn’t just what he does — it’s how calmly he believes he’s right. Karter is chaos wrapped in charm. Volatile, sadistic, and emotionally fractured, he craves reaction and pain — both giving and receiving it. His dynamic with Casey is violent and destabilizing, yet disturbingly intimate. He is the embodiment of temptation and destruction, and his absence later in the story leaves a noticeable emotional void — for Casey and the reader alike. Casey’s POV is where the book truly cuts deepest. Her internal struggle — between resistance, numbness, survival, and moments of unwanted attachment — is written in a way that’s raw and exhausting in the best (and worst) ways. The story does not romanticize her trauma, but it also doesn’t offer comfort. Instead, it forces the reader to sit in the reality of what prolonged abuse, fear, and control can do to a person’s sense of self. As the story progresses, the power dynamics shift from overt violence to psychological domination, conditioning, and enforced dependency. Casey’s intelligence and resilience keep her alive, but survival comes at a cost — one that becomes harder to measure as time passes. The later chapters deepen the horror by stripping away any illusion of rescue or safety. Trust becomes a weapon. Compassion is manipulated. Even moments of quiet or domestic normalcy feel sinister, like the calm before another fracture. The ending delivers no clean resolution — instead, it leaves you unsettled, questioning, and very aware that Casey’s story is far from over. The cliffhanger isn’t explosive; it’s quietly devastating, the kind that lingers long after you close the book. Final Thoughts This book is: ❌ Not for everyone ✔️ Extremely dark ✔️ Psychologically intense ✔️ Emotionally draining but compelling If you’re looking for a story about control, obsession, moral decay, and survival under impossible circumstances, Fixing Her will hook you — but it will also challenge you. And yes… Book two is absolutely necessary.
This is the darkest book I’ve ever read, by FAR. I genuinely don’t know how to describe how I feel about this book. I feel like it’s incorrect to say I liked this book. Both legally and morally I don’t think I can say I enjoy this book. It does not capture how this book made me feel or how I feel about it. Do you ever just witness something and have to sit with yourself for a bit to process it? That’s how I feel right now.
This is hands down the most absolutely depraved book I’ve ever read. Truly, if you want to witness evil, it is between these pages. I’ve read disturbing content in books before, but this one really did have me wondering if maybe I shouldn’t be witnessing those events. Please check your TW before reading this. Mind your mental health and read carefully. There is NO HEA. Not even remotely. Not even one that will make you feel “well at least it’s over”.
For those reasons, it is a great horror novel. There is no shred of romance. Lucas and Karter both are genuinely vile individuals. There is absolutely no redemption even remotely possible for either of these two, and there rightfully shouldn’t be. Both characters know what they are, and the reader has no choice but to bear witness to it.
I appreciate that F. King Hayes knew exactly what this book was. The horror that is between these pages leaves absolutely no room for mistaking it. No gray area, no uncertainty. Just pure, unapologetic depravity. There was no shred of trying to romanticize the darkness in this and no room for anyone else to either, which I highly, highly respect. There was zero attempt to humanize the villains. It was just pure terror.
The 4 out of 5 stars is primarily because there was some of the beginning that was difficult to follow for me, primarily the intertangling of the three main characters. How and why Casey came about or ended up in their paths was a bit bumpy at times and had me going back to re-read who knew who from where. But honestly, as I read farther it didn’t even matter. The questions left my head entirely, which almost feels like it could have been intentional. My grasp on Casey’s origin slipped as Casey herself did. Beyond that, I almost wish there were more answers as to why, how, when, etc. I do also wish there was more insight into the breakdown in relationships overall that I’m left questioning.
However, I’m thoroughly horrified and don’t quite know what to do with what I just forced my brain to witness (in a good way. This is how horror is supposed to make you feel).
I had to take a minute after finishing Fixing Her before I could even attempt to write this review. This isn't a book you simply close and move on from, it lingers. It gets under your skin, leaves your emotions in chaos, and forces you to process everything you just experienced. This is, without question, the most twisted book I've read to date. But somehow, I was completely captivated from beginning to end. Every chapter pulled me deeper into the darkness, and I couldn't stop reading. I needed to know how it would end, even when I wasn't sure I was emotionally prepared for where it was taking me. The trauma these characters endure is heartbreaking, and the emotional weight of their journeys is almost suffocating at times. Their pain, grief, obsession, desperation, and fractured realities are written in such a raw, haunting way that I found myself feeling everything right alongside them. This isn't darkness for the sake of shock value; it's carefully woven into the story, making every moment feel meaningful, no matter how unsettling. There is no comfort here. No fairy tale. No happily-ever-after waiting around the corner. This is a tragedy in every sense of the word, and the author never pretends otherwise. Yet somehow, within all of the heartbreak and horror, they've crafted something incredibly compelling and beautifully written. The characters are deeply flawed, morally gray, and impossible to forget. Their relationships are toxic, obsessive, and all-consuming, creating a psychological spiral that kept me glued to every page. If you're looking for a feel-good romance, keep scrolling. But if you love pitch-black romance, psychological horror, morally corrupt characters, emotional devastation, and stories that leave you sitting in silence after the final page... Fixing Her absolutely delivers. This book wrecked me. It made me uncomfortable. It made me feel everything. And somehow... it left me wanting so much more. I don't know how else to explain it other than this: it's not a book I loved because it made me happy, it's a book I loved because it made me feel. That's the kind of story that stays with you.
Dr. Karter Reed is a surgeon who teaches medicine at a university. He was born with a rare genetic defect that leaves him unable to feel pain. Dr. Lucas Avery conducts pharmaceutical research, but his true passion lies in creating his "doll people." And yes, it’s exactly as fucked up as your depraved mind is imagining. Casey Jordan is simply the unfortunate woman who happens to capture the attention of both these monsters.
Lucas and Karter share a complicated relationship that's toxic AF, but honestly? It’s kind of hot (I said what I said). When Casey enters the equation, Lucas becomes disturbingly obsessed. Lucas and Karter’s brand of psychological warfare may be different but its cruelty knows no bounds. I found Karter's behavior the most unsettling. It’s like he has a switch that flips turning him into a maniacal sociopath who revels in the discord his games create. His manic insanity, evil laughs, and chilling smiles gave me the creeps. Lucas, by contrast, is much more methodical, which has its own brand of terrifying.
Poor Casey just can’t catch a break, and what these two doctors put her through is horrifying. They offer her a semblance of safety, only to rip it away before turning around and acting as if nothing happened. Casey quickly realizes she should have run the first chance she got, because what Lucas has planned for her is fucked up on so many levels.
The core concept of "doll making" is utterly terrifying. Imagine waking up strapped to a hospital bed, being drugged regularly to stay "compliant," while a mad scientist abuses your body in ways too depraved to comprehend. Between the narcotics and the physical and psychological torture, it would be a miracle to walk away with any piece of your psyche intact. It’s a waking nightmare that turns into something worse.
The book ends unresolved, and I can’t wait for book two. Lucas is such a unique character, and I am dying to learn why he is the way he is. I’m also curious about what happened in the fire he survived. I suspect Karter played a role in the event (I seriously don’t like or trust him).
If you like your books pitch-black and packed with complete and utter fuckery, this is a must read. Honestly, anything by F. King Hayes is always worth it.
