The contents of this book are filled with various calibers of horror and include a lengthy TW list; readers beware!
This is a really depraved, and savage collection of extra violent stories. Usually, when I read a collection of stories, I break down every single story, however, this one has quite a few, so, I am going to go into depth with some of my absolute favorites! Some really stand out stories to me were: 1."Final Thrill"- Three men, whom worked together, all end up with the same terminal disease, as they were all exposed to the same materials. Not wanting to waste their lives doing treatments, they want to have one last blast before they go, doing what they love. Unfortunately, what they love to do is sexually deviant, and vile. Unbeknownst to them, they chose the wrong group of girls, because, in this group is a total badass, who has no fear, and the brains, and brutality to do anything she needs to do to save, both herself, and her friends from these violent deviants. This was a really intense one, so, definitely read with caution. The bloody revenge is so, so good! 2."Small Noises"- Vincent and Jesse are really good friends. The best. In fact, Jesse doesn't know this, but, Vincent loves Jesse. He loves Jesse so much, that he got him the ultimate gift. Vincent surprises Jesse with a grand opportunity to face someone who has done him incredibly wrong, his old bully, Hansen, who had forced himself, sexually, upon Jesse, violently, in front of all of his peers. Having kidnapped, and bound Hansen, Vincent presents him to Jesse. Will Jesse have what it takes to exact his bloody revenge, or will Jesse feel bad, forgive, and let him go? This was a great story of revenge, friendship, and love. 3."The Good Samaritan"- Traveling the road from Jerusalem to Bethany at dusk, wealthy Israelite Natan ben Moshe rides his donkey. Locals dare not travel this road after dark, however, Natan is unphased, believing himself to be safe. However, along the way, he encounters a stranger, who, robs him for all of his belongings, including his close, and leaves him for dead, in the desert, naked. But, not before physically attacking, biting his neck, and drinking his blood. Lying, helpless, nude, and bleeding, Natan is discover by a Samaritan by the name of Amram ben Elazar. Amram seems to know who attacked Natan, or rather, what. Will Amram help Natan? And, if he does, how will he, or how can he? I really loved this! It was a great, biblical take on a vampire tale! 4."Sharp White Light"- Jeb Holcombe, a man in his fifties, is on a long ride to go see his younger girlfriend, behind his wife's back, by the way. Jeb is an abuser, cheater, and all around horrible person. Along the way, there is a weird change in the weather, and, also, a piercing white light, in the sky. Before he knows it, he is being raised up in the air. Waking up on a metal slab, with a tray full of medical tools next to him, Jeb struggles to figure out what is happening, but, it soon becomes very clear that he is about to become a sick experiment for creature that are not of this earth. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi horror, but, this story was very detailed, imaginative, and really makes you feel like the character deserves to be in the position that they are found in! 5."Sound Of The Shadow"- Sailor, and lover of the ocean, Sven Roladsson, is on a voyage through treacherous waters with a crew of men with him. While standing on the deck, right before a storm hits, Sven is admiring the beautiful sights of the cast sea. He, soon, sees an islet in the water, and a shadowy figure that he can't quite make out, but, he can her a beautiful, and enchanting song. As if in a trance, or, under a spell, Sven is soon overtaken by his most intrusive, and violent thoughts. What will he do while under this spell? Is anyone safe? I loved this so, so much! This was my favorite story of the entire collection, as I have an affinity for mythical horror stories! 6."He Sees You When You're Sleeping"- Santa Claus, now going by his name, Kris Kringle, has lost everything. Kids no longer ask him for what they want, relying on their parents. This has caused a massive decrease in holiday spirit, causing Mrs. Claus to grow ill, and pass on. After this, Kringle falls heavily into drug, and alcohol use, going on benders. Kris really has no plans for Christmas, anymore, but, Don DeBello, mob boss, certainly does. There are many people who think they can owe the Don money, and not pay back. These people are on the Don's naughty list, which means, they are, also, on Kris Kringle's, and he must be the one to deliver them some coal, this year, and for the next 3 years, unless Kris wants the kids who still believe him to be Santa to find out how much of a drug addict, and alcoholic he had become, tarnishing his image. Santa Claus is back, and he is going to make an example out of those who crossed the Don, and their families on Christmas Eve. This was a really gory, and bloody take on the naughty list trope of a Christmas horror. One of my favorite holiday reads, this year! 7."Filming Frightmare!"- Simon and Jen are paired up as partners for a film project. While Jen had her own ideas of what to shoot, Simon believe he has the best idea for their film. Simon drags Jen to what is said to be a haunted cabin by Clear Lake. It is Simon's plan to create his own "haunted" shoot based around the lore of the cabin. However, while exploring the cabin, and setting up the equipment to begin their shoot, they encounter a gruesome figure, who emerged from the cellar, full of body parts, and armed with an ice pick, and he is all too real. Can they survive? Will they escape? Will they get the A grade that Simon almost guaranteed, and at what cost? I loved this! It was a brutal Slasher story, and I love me a good Slasher. 8."Bong Fetus"- The main character, and his friend Chaz, are heading to a rave. However, they want to be really high, even before they arrive, and are surrounded by people. In an attempt to start the party off right, the two friends duck into a public bathroom, to partake in some devil's lettuce. Realizing that their bong is bone dry, our main character tries to fill it from the sink, only to discover that the spout is out of order. Desperate, they fill the bong with water from a disgusting, shit and blood stained toilet, only to discover that they scooped up more than just water, period blood, and feces. This was foul! Absolutely disgusting, and I loved it! It is the shortest story in the whole collection, but, it definitely delivers on the gross out scale. 9. "Mirage"- Don Creighton, a man who is full of himself, a self proclaimed player, and all around douche is a lover of fast cars, and fast women. He is quite the narcissist. Don has a plan. He wants to have sex with the president of the country club's wife, and what better time to try than a Halloween party? Dressed as Las Vegas Elvis, Don wants to show off, and show our, so, he chooses to take one of his prized vehicles, his Mirage. Along the way, careless as Don is, he runs out of gas, so, he stops and fills up his tank. Afterwards, back on the way to the party, Don hears a thumping from the undercarriage of his expensive car. Had he hit something? Was he dragging it? And, for how long? Stopping to investigate, Don ends up with much more than her had bargained for. I had first read this story in an anthology, and, loved it just as much then! It is a great reimagining of a classic urban legend. It was hard for me to choose a handful of stories from this collection, because, everyone of these tales were amazing, and just so full of gore, and absolutely, beautifully violent, and gnarly. As a whole, this is an awesome collection, and I highly recommend it, and would reread, undoubtedly! 5⭐/5
It’s an absolute no brainer that this is a must read. If you’re an existing fan of reading Mr. Blaze’s work then you’ve likely already read several of these but even if you aren’t familiar there is literally something for everyone within these pages. I mean, provided you like extreme horror and the like. As the previous review mentions, trigger warnings for pretty much everything possible.
Torture porn, splatterporn, splatternoir, splatterpunk, extreme horror - this one has it all! Jerry Blaze excels in brutal, vile, depraved tales, slam-bang eye-openers figuring both supernatural and plain human monsters! Twenty-two shorts filled with gnarly, messed up, sadistic scenes, from revenge stories to revolting snapshots of the lengths psychos will go to find satisfaction. Written with that special Jerry Blaze touch, always clear and to the point, ultra violent and cruelly imagined, they range from scary home invasions (check the opening story, the titular "Final Thrill") and vampires cropping up in the Bible ("The Good Samaritan") to shocking Christmas horror ("He Sees You When You're Sleeping" - Santa working for the mob?!) and bleak sci-fi ("Beyond the Veil")! I devoured them all like they were candy!
The variety is stunning, most stories revolting to the core. Some of them I'd read before, and I was glad to find they've lost none of their luster! If you're after a collection that wastes no time and goes straight to the action taking no prisoners, this will definitely scratch that itch!
