Avery Hart is prepared for the massive storm about to batter her Louisiana village, or so she thinks. But her best laid plans are shattered when a mysterious man appears out of the chaos, soaked through and shaken. He talks strangely. He acts strangely. And it seems like he has a secret he is desperate to hide. A secret Avery needs to know before she can trust him, or even trust herself.
With the town all but destroyed, Avery will find herself at a difficult crossroads. And she’ll need every ounce of grace and resilience to find her way, and to fix what has been broken.
Evocative of the deep, noir-ish mysteries of Gillian Flynn and Tana French, this novel is fast paced and filled with twists and turns. Perfect for those who love a nuanced, atmospheric tale that explores the many facets of belief, and what happens when faith is tested in a crisis.
It's thrilling to discover an author who can pull you in with characters and a story like this one. Heartbreaking, truthful, insightful. I hated for it to end.
This is a dark and gritty story. The editing seemed to be well done, not perfect but not distracting. The story line twisted and turned enough to keep you guessing. I did not enjoy that it was so dark and gritty which was understandable because they had just been through a devastating hurricane. However, even before the hurricane everything seemed to be in the process of decay.
It was second in a series and is NOT stand alone so there were a lot of gaps. I would not consider this a Christian book in any way, but I think a few things were tossed in after the fact to try to pretend. People mentioned the rapture a few times but as for praying or reading the Bible or asking God's guidance, never mentioned. With all that was going on, I would certainly be praying. The whole thing with the rapture is that it is only a recent "pop" theology, never mentioned until the 1830s. If the author wanted to make it Christian, he should have made it part of their lives when facing such dire circumstances.
I gave a 3 because even though I was not thrilled with the book and probably put it at 1, other people probably would like it.
MR. PEVEY, YOU REFER TO YOUR WRITING AS JUST MORE WORDS. THEY ARE SO MUCH MORE TO ME. I ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR BOOKS FOR THEIR SOUTHERN FLAIR AND QURIKYNESS. THIS ONE WAS NO DIFFERENT. I LOVED THIS ONE IT ENDED THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND I'LL KEEP READING AND ENJOYING YOUR WONDERFUL BOOKS. ;D
Anyone who has been through a devastating hurricane like Katrina will relate to much of this story. The mystery aspect was different and interesting. Lots of twists and turns. The main characters were very likeable.
Abe comes out during a hurricane. Avery ends up helping him and finds out he’s an escaped convict who has come back home to try to get justice. I wasn’t a fan of the storyline or writing style, was a chore for me to finish for my book club.
This was a slow start for me. Unaware it was book 2 of a series I felt it jumped around a bit. The characters were difficult to believe in. The story picked up about half way in so I kept reading. Once the plot twist began it was a fast read. Not much of a thriller. Some suspense.
I read it till my eyes closed for sleep & couldn't wait for night to read some more. Quite an interesting & unexpected ending. Be nice to yourself & give it a try...
