Hunter has lived five lives, and this one is driven by revenge.
After years of searching, he finally finds a clue that leads him to the untamed west of the Feral Lands, a frontier crawling with monsters, vampires, and the iron rule of the Dominion. With the unexpected aid of a Witch, he rides into Goldenvale, a city steeped in mystery and danger.
But the trail to vengeance runs cold…until it burns anew. With the Marshal's star blazing in his heart and powers unlike any before, Hunter is ready to claim his justice and uncover the truth about himself and this savage world.
This book was pretty good, but not great. I liked the overarching plot, but some of the execution of it left a bit to be desired.
The MC is a guy that apparently is reborn (as an infant) after each time he dies. He was originally from Earth, but now is on some variation that has magic and beings of lore. He's a bounty hunter, but the bounty he's hunting at the beginning of the story is personal: the man who killed his parents for his previous life. In his current life, he's somewhere in his 40's. He has a few meaningless encounters early, then meets a woman that happens to be hunting the same exact man he is, so they sort of join forces. From there, he reaches a major settlement and tries to find out where his quarry has gone to. He kills a vampire, and ends up as one of the "Marked", in his case, as a Marshal.
The LIs in the book are pretty blah. The only one that becomes his lover is the first he meets, a witch. She's just ok. While powerful, she is young and somewhat reckless. There are two others that are queued as potentials, and neither of them does much for me, either. This whole story could have been told without the harem elements, and it wouldn't have suffered at all. The lone sex scene was forgettable.
The penultimate battle against the true antagonist was anticlimactic at best, while one of the previous battles actually felt more like the final one. The MC's powers are a bit cheesy, and lend themselves to being more plot armor devices than something profound. Which is why some of his battles were so average to me.
This is a good introduction to a new series. Apparently this world was in the midst of a apocalyptic civil war. So the God of this world, known as Maker broke the world. This caused a river of mana to flow from the broken mountains separating the land in half. Storms started raining mana as well. When someone is caught in the rain, they either turn into a monster or a marked individual with powers. To protect the people the Maker created Marshals along with witches to bring justice to the land. However the Dominion rose in the east side of the world and they got rid of all of the marked there. The west side of the divide the Marshals with their witch companions kept the peace. The Dominion was not content and they did away with all of the Marshals. Hunter Vance or Deadman Vance has no interest in politics. He's trailing a killer, when he comes into Goldenvale. This case is personal and one of vengeance for him. The last thing he wants in to get involved with a witch. Even worse after killing a vampire, he becomes marked. He becomes the first Marshal to be seen in two of hundred of years.
A couple continuity issues, like starting out in the day and switching to night without any explanation, overall nice slow build up of a world, character development with the heroes and villains having flaws and egos and self righteous.
While there is a semblance of a story deep down, there is just too much nonsense and contradictions to be enjoyable. Almost nothing is explained, and what is doesn’t make any sense. I read way too far in the hopes it got better.
