In a world of high-class magic and gangster grit, a star-crossed couple must decide where their loyalties lie in the sizzling romantasy follow-up to BookTok star Stacey McEwan's New York Times bestseller A Forbidden Alchemy.
In Belavere Trench, the Artisans and the Craftsmen are at war. Patrick, the last Alchemist, and Nina, the world’s only known earth Charmer, have been captured by the Artisans, putting Patrick’s rebel union in a precarious position.
Though he hasn’t forgiven Nina her betrayals, Patrick has other things to worry about. He is finally reunited with his father, a prisoner of the Artisans, and the group lands a narrow escape only with the help of Nina’s first love, Theo. Decoding an ancient prophecy, they set off in search of an infinite supply of idium that will determine the course of the war, should it prove more than a myth. Fleeing across Craftsman towns on the brink, they will encounter old friends – and enemies – in search of answers.
Oh, you thought book 1 buried you with plot twists? Book 2 literally tears a seam down the middle of the world and pushes you in so you can’t climb back up.
“How could I tell him that I was every bit as terrible as he feared and still have him love me in the end?”
After the deepest level of betrayal, Nina and Patrick navigate a path (or should I say tunnel?) covered in glass. The pain is real, the cuts are deep. Two shattered hearts trying to figure out if they can piece themselves back together again. The growth, THE TENSION and the longing had me on the edge of my seat. PLUS we have Theo stirring the pot!
“I think you and I . . .we’re meant to carry on as we are. Broken parts and all.”
I will die on the hill that Patrick is Tommy Shelby. Can we please bring suspenders back? The loyalty this man has for his family, his town, the ones he loves - it’s unmatched!
Book 2 also expands the world, that crazy network of underground tunnels all lead to towns that get to to be explored! As the characters get pulled to different locations we also get to learn more about the history & origin of magic. Be prepared, there are so many insane twists! Theo, Polly, John, Rose.. arrghh I can’t!
I honestly can’t wait for book 3! I’m not ready to leave this world so I’m diving into a re-read of book 1 🙌🏼
—-
“If I was a knife, then I could rip and slash and gouge until the aching ebbed. It wasn’t idium I wanted. It was revenge.”
“Patrick’s eyes had always been a danger to me. One glance, and I was swallowed”
Literally need this in my hands yesterday. It's been two months and I'm still thinking about book one. I miss Patty.
Ngl, while I am not surprised bc AFA is phenomenal and deserves a million NG requests for AFP, the NetGalley denial stung a little bit for this one BUT Saga is a real one for sending that sampler. I am SO stoked and I cannot wait for Summer to get my hands on this book!!!

Me after seeing the cover reveal and reading that cosmo exclusive chapter sneak today
HUGE thanks to NetGalley & Simon & Schuster Canada for a chance to review this arc!!
A Forsaken Prophecy was a much better reading experience for me than its predecessor. The writing had a perfect flow and I didn’t want to put this down for at least 80%. The characters were more believable and consistent in their actions. I found myself warming up to Theo, which wasn’t something I expected after reading the first instalment. In terms of character development, I’d give this sequel 4.5/5 ; new lights & layers were added to the characters that made them more human and easier to sympathize for. The only thing I struggled with has to do with the plot… because I wondered why was it that they walked into every possible trap along the way. Patrick lost a bit of his wits in this one ; but one could argue that he had a lot on his plate and I would agree. I saw every twist coming but I do have an over analytic brain so it might be on me ; it didn’t hinder my reading experience.
This series doesn’t shy away from its darkness and that’s something I can also appreciate. I grew in extreme poverty and I find it’s not always a topic every author can grasp but Stacey McEwan can definitely grasp a lot of its complexity. I appreciated that she went more into depth with that topic in this sequel.
Now the strong suit of this novel is definitely the romance. He loves her so much that despite all she put him through, her safety still comes first and that is something I burn for. The slow burn and longing were just right. I read this author’s previous trilogy and I find she writes the best romances.
This was a good reading experience for me ; I liked this sequel and I’m excited for what’s to come in the last one.
This book gave me life during the worst reading slump of my life...I cannot get enough.
It picks up right where we left off, in the worst way possible :) mommy I am scared, the angst is aching my chest. Will they ever be happy and free again?
I was not only on the edge of my seat with every (absolute shitshow) these characters had to experience, but the YEARNING was impeccable. I would live, breathe, and die for Nina and Patrick's story. If you ask me for any book recommendation ever, this series will be my immediate go-to.
Final note for Miss Stacey herself, that ending was diabolical and I have not felt sane since I finished it! Therapy bills are being sent over.
This starts off so strong — literally picking up right where the last book left us, which I always love in a sequel. It immediately pulled me back into the story and the world.
One of the big changes in this book is that we get quite a few new POVs. The first book was just Patrick and Nina, so it was interesting to see the story open up to other characters. I’m not totally convinced the extra perspectives added a huge amount overall, but they were still a welcome addition and helped flesh out the wider world.
Around the 40–60% mark the pacing dipped a little and things slowed down. Personally I didn’t mind too much because there were some really lovely moments tucked into that section — little bits of absolute gold. Miss Trunk, the old woman who can only communicate through piano in her antiques shop, was such a standout character. And Polly discovering all the letters Otto had sent her after she betrayed everyone? That moment hit so well. There were some real gems in this book — I just wanted even more of them.
Patrick and Nina still completely have my heart. I adore them and I’m desperately hoping we get even more of them in book three. And Donny’s wit was such a welcome reprieve during some of the heavier parts of the story — I loved every time he showed up.
The prophecy about the three daughters was such an interesting concept, but I do think it could have been a bit clearer. I kept expecting some big reveal — like Nina being an ancestor or somehow holding the powers of all three sisters — something that tied it all together in a bigger way. Because of that, parts of the book did feel a little bit like a bridge or filler book in the series.
That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and the yearning was absolutely on point.
I will 100% be picking up book three — honestly I cannot wait!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
“You seein’ this shithole?” “I’m blind, cockhead.”
Donny strikes again! Possibly my fav side character ever! He gives Carrion a run for his money.
This book picked right up where it left off, and that was in a gut wrenching scene, the emotions were high reading through this story with the hurt, anger, betrayal, the heartbreak, the quests and the friendships!
“War was a gentlemen’s game. Women were just the currency”
The blue balls the slow burn gave me were big! Stacey, you’ve ruined me for all other men. No one will ever compare to Patrick!!!!!
“When you look up at me like that, darlin’,” he said in warning, “it’s like darin’ me to ruin you.
I was nervous for this book, not gonna lie. So many books suffer from that sophomore book curse where the heroine goes on her hero journey and finds self discovery or whatever. This book did not feel that way at all.
I'm so distraught now, having been in a book slump for WEEKS. Stacey revived me but also I NEED BOOK 3 ALREADY. Back to Slumpville I go.
This book gave everything that I hoped it would. We got to see more lore, more heart, more Patrick 🫦, just more.
Thank you so much to the author, Saga Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this title. I attest that I am leaving my review voluntarily and honestly.
This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2026, and I’m honestly so glad I got the ARC because it completely lived up to the hype. The entire time I was reading, I kept thinking, this is so good. And what’s even crazier is that feeling never dropped—not once. If the book had ended at any point, it still would’ve been a 5-star read for me. And when I got to the actual ending? Same feeling.
It never lagged. It’s fast-paced, super engaging, and I was locked in from start to finish.
What really stood out to me is that this book delivers on everything. So many romantasy books lean heavily on romance and let the plot fall to the side—but not this one. The plot, the world, the storyline—all of it is incredibly well done. And then on top of that, the banter is phenomenal. Not just between Nina and Patrick (which is amazing), but between all the characters. The dynamic between the men had me laughing out loud—I could literally hear their Irish accents the entire time.
And the tension between Nina and Patrick? Painful in the best way. The yearning is so well done and just keeps building the entire book.
I also loved the additional storylines—Theo, John—there’s just so much here to sink into, and it all works together.
I could honestly go on and on, but bottom line: I loved this book. I’m fully obsessed, and I cannot wait for the next one. This series is already shaping up to be one of my all-time favorites.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.
pros of being an ARC reader: reading the sequel early. cons of being an ARC reader: finishing the sequel early and realizing you now have to wait forever for book three
This was one of my top anticipated reads of 2026 and it did not disappoint!! The world in the series is by far one of my favorites! And the relationship of Patrick and Nina is just the best! You thought the twists were amazing in book 1! Buckle up for the roller coaster of book two! The yearning, the mystery, the anticipation that is in this book is phenomenal! I am beyond thankful I was chosen to receive an arc copy of this book! If you do not have it preordered… you need to add it to your cart immediately!!
This is book two in The Artisan Trilogy, where Patrick the last alchemist and Nina the only earth-charmer are caught in the middle of a full-on war between magic factions and end up chasing an ancient prophecy that could decide the entire conflict. It’s basically rebels, betrayals, exes showing up, and a road-trip quest for a mythical resource while everyone is fighting for power.
I feel like this is peak romantasy chaos with politics, tension, and messy feelings layered on top of worldbuilding. It reads like dramatic fantasy TV in book form, and I’d be here for the emotional disasters.
While there was a lot to enjoy about this second instalment, it didn’t have the addictive quality of the first book which was disappointing.
I have tried to keep this review free from direct spoilers, but it may reveal some details from book one.
This book picks up right where book one ended and had a strong start—I loved the forced proximity between Nina, Theo, and Patrick—but overall, the pacing felt a little slow. My interest dipped in the middle, with a lot of repetition (travelling, fleeing, planning their next move) and not much action—a lot happened, but at the same time, nothing happened. However, the final 30% definitely piqued my interest again, and that epilogue has me eager for the final instalment because what are they going to do now?! The story ends on a strong hook rather than a major cliffhanger.
We got several new POVs, which I enjoyed because they gave me more insight into the side characters. The downside of switching between multiple POVs across different locations is that it can sometimes halt a story’s momentum.
While there are plot developments in this book, I felt it was almost a 50/50 split between plot and character development, which is perhaps another reason the pacing dragged for me at times. I also wish the story surrounding the three sisters had been a little clearer, but perhaps that will come in the final instalment.
Patrick was absolutely delivering on the longing, restraint, and yearning, but having him and Nina emotionally separated for so much of the book unfortunately added to my dip in interest around the middle of the book. The spice scene towards the end also felt a little out of place in terms of both the dialogue and the actions, and the “fuck it” moment didn’t quite land for me.
I did enjoy seeing some character growth towards the end, especially from Theo. Don’t get me wrong—he is far from perfect, and I did feel like his feelings for Nina were brought back solely for the drama and to get more reactions from Patrick, BUT I am glad Stacey didn’t make him the generic jaded ex-lover character. I liked seeing his internal conflict and watching him finally take a stand against his father. I’m just a little disappointed that it was mentioned he could control water within the human body, yet he never used those supposed abilities. I don’t know if this was a plot hole, but it was disappointing.
Nina’s character let me down in this book. I wanted more from her. She seemed so reliant on Patrick, which would have been understandable on occasion, but throughout much of the story her personality felt flimsy.
Overall, I enjoyed the expansion of the world, and the stakes have definitely been raised with that reveal in the epilogue, but it didn’t charm me quite as much as the first book. I am, however, hopeful for book three, as I suspect many of the issues I had with this instalment—the repetitive scramble plot and disrupted character dynamics—won’t carry over into the final book.
💭📖 It’s not often a book leaves me completely speechless but this one did. The moment I closed it, I just sat there, trying to process everything.
Absolutely magnificent. I devoured every page.
Stacey has such a talent for pulling you into her world and making you feel everything. Every emotion hits, this story is a full emotional rollercoaster, and I was completely along for the ride.
We pick up right where A Forbidden Alchemy left off, and from the very beginning I was on the edge of my seat. The plot is so well thought out, the storytelling is incredible, and those twists! Some genuinely had my jaw on the floor. The way the world building expands from book one is fantastic and makes the story that more interesting.
Patrick and Nina, I love so them. Their chemistry is electric, intense, and completely addictive. You can feel every moment between them. Also their growth and character development was spot on!
And when an author makes you care just as much about the secondary characters, you know the story is something special. I was just as invested in them, sometimes even raging at them too 😂
If you’ve been thinking about picking up this series, do it. I can’t recommend it enough, you won’t regret it.
A Forsaken Prophecy was such an amazing book! While I personally didn’t love this one as much as I did book 1, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this book is still a wild ride!
The story picks up right where book 1 left off: right in the middle of all the action. We are introduced to several chapters with different character points of view (aside from just Nina and Patrick this time around). I usually love multi pov books, but I’m not sure if in this book it made it seem like so much was going on while at the same time almost nothing was happening. Maybe that’s just a me problem though?
The romance once again stood out for me. I absolutely adore Nina and Patrick but somehow Stacey had me rooting for Theo too?!?!?! Like ahhhh I know he’s hung up on Nina but like could we maybe find him another perfect love interest so Nina and Patrick can have their happy ending (which I’m hoping they do actually get)!
Anyways, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to read this book early! Unfortunately, that now means I have to wait even longer for book 3. 😭
Thank you so much to Saga Press for the advanced copy!
Phenomenal. Chef’s kiss. 5 stars. In fact, take all my stars.
Incredibly action packed, not a dull scene. It picked up right up from that godforsaken cliffhanger in Forbdiden Alchemy, one book ending I will never forget. My heart was constantly racing, I was at the edge of my seat, you could not pry this book from my hands when I was immersed into it, loved every second.
Patrick. Patty, my man. I LOVE HIM. He’s so perfect. No notes.
An absolutely perfect second book for a trilogy, which as they say is very hard to do. Stacey knows what she’s doing and she DELIVERS.
The world politics. The romance. The tension. The character dynamics. THE DIALOGUE. Loved it all!! Girl knows how to keep my interest, and keep my heart racing because omg the stakes.
Stacey I need book three. I can’t wait a year, PLEASE!
Okay, now that i’ve sat on this one for a couple days after finishing, I can say without a doubt that these are two of the most unique romantasy reads i’ve read.
➤ the plot? brilliant & original ➤ the romance? torturous & beautiful ➤ the ending? I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 3
I loveeee Nina & Patrick, & while the ending of AFA left my heart ripped out of my chest & angry at her, this one was a bit different. She’s trying her best to make amends & the love she & Patrick have can endure the tests of time, it was just so brutal & heartbreaking to see them in this one & what they’ve become. I don’t blame Patrick not one bit, but I’m so ready for more of their epic, out of this world together-ness again!
I even found myself loving Theo & Polly! That probably says a lot about me as a person that my empathy for their situations trumps their mistakes & actions, but I’m glad I’m that way tbh because I forgave them way too fast lol. But, I digress.
4.5⭐️ rated up!
🫶🏼 thank you Saga Press & Simon Audio for the gifted copies!
One of my most anticipated releases of 2026 and it was INCREDIBLE. Absolutely FLEW through this book and now I’m sad it’s over! Love the world and characters so much, I can’t get enough of them and could read 1000 more pages.
Full review to come! In the mean time I beg you all to pick up A Forbidden Alchemy ASAP.
Thank you heaps Simon & Schuster Australia for the eARC, I already want to reread it 🥹
I swear these books have crack in them bc they are soooooo good!!! I love the gloomy atmosphere and setting and the stakes of the story. I will forever love Patrick and he can do no wrong ever. These books inspired me to watch Peaky Blinders and I’m just as obsessed. I love how different these fantasy books feel and it’s a refreshing breath for the genre. I can’t believe how long I’m now going to have to wait for the next book 🥲
“A Forbidden Alchemy” was one of my favorite reads last year, and its sequel did not disappoint.
The story picks up right where we left off — and a fast-paced adventure ensues. There are a number of twists and turns throughout the book, and each shocking moment felt earned, even early on.
Nina and Patrick have my heart, it’s impossible not to root for them. You can feel the pain, love and tension. The yearning is on point!
Stacey McEwan does wonders with dialogue. I really appreciated the character growth, too. These themes are so poignant, especially right now. There’s a nuance to how this story is being told, I really can’t recommend it enough.
2.75 aaah, this book is so hard to review as I ADORED book one. I loved the peaky blinders vibes, the magic felt authentic and different but this book took me forever to get into and even then, my attention dipped in and out of it. The pacing was off and I felt the plot was going around in circles, particularly in the middle. A lot was happening but also not a lot? I was kinda thrown. however, the slow burn was BURNING and the tension was ❤️🔥❤️🔥 I feel like I need to sit with this one
Big thank you to Simon and Schuster and to netgalley for the e-arc!
This book picks up immediately after A Forbidden Alchemy and instantly hooks you back into the story. There’s action and high stakes straight from the beginning and I was invested in the story immediately. We begin with Nina and Patrick taken prisoner by the House whilst also dealing with the breakdown of their relationship after all the lies and betrayals.
The dynamic of their relationship has obviously changed a lot and the angst of it all hurt my heart. Patrick wants to hate her but also can’t take his eyes off of her, protects her at every turn, wants to give her the room to make her own decisions. Being in his perspective and reading the thoughts he had about Nina made me feel half giddy with excitement and half devastated because they weren’t actually together.
The slowburn was absolutely excruciating and had me on the edge of my seat. The longing from him in this book? The yearning? So good. He’s so underrated as a book boyfriend and I will gladly hype him up so everyone else can meet him and love him as much as I do.
Also, we all love a f**k it moment and this book did it PERFECTLY!!
I did rate book one highly too but any of the minor complaints I did have were completely gone in this book. The plot flowed a lot better, I felt like there wasn’t a point I ever thought it was slow or I was waiting for things to pick back up again. Of course the betrayals and twists didn’t end either, Stacey McEwen has a way of subtly dropping them in there and then continuing with the story while I’m over here just completely reeling and you know what? I love it.
The characters are also a high point for this series. They’re all so morally grey and complex with layers and different motivations and the constant turns of working together, betrayal and then redemption kept me so invested. There’s definitely a few I have a lot of complicated feelings for and honestly it makes me even more excited for the next book to see where they end up. There was a moment close to the end where it really hit me just how much I love both Nina and Patrick, they’re a book couple I will think about a lot and I really hope at the end of this they get some sort of HEA.
The ending? I feel like I should thank Stacey for not traumatising me because for a few minutes there I was so scared but it still ended in an absolutely insane way and I’m so invested. Now I impatiently await the third book and daydream about Patrick Colson🥹😭
I literally devoured A Forbidden Alchemy, so I was BEYOND excited when I got the approval for this eARC!!!!
First of all, the world and the prophecy element in this series just keeps getting more fascinating. The way the story peels back layers of the prophecy and what it actually means had me completely hooked. Every time I thought I understood what was going on… something else shifted and suddenly everything felt more dangerous and complicated. I LOVE when a fantasy series keeps expanding the lore in ways that make the story feel bigger and more intense.
I am so attached to Nina and Pat, honestly I love every single character in this book!!!! Minus a couple but I won’t spoil!!!! Everyone feels layered and human, making choices that aren’t always easy or perfect but that make sense for who they are. Watching their loyalties, fears, and relationships evolve under the pressure of everything happening was so compelling.
The plot is nonstop tension throughout. This book does such a good job balancing the political intrigue, the magical elements, and the character-driven moments so that everything feels important. I genuinely didn’t want to stop reading because I needed to know what would happen next.
Also can we talk about how Stacey McEwan writes emotional scenes??? Because WOW!!!!!!!! By the end I was equal parts thrilled and emotionally wrecked, which honestly is exactly what I want from a fantasy like this.
If you love character-driven fantasy with prophecy, high stakes, intense relationships, and a world that keeps getting deeper the more you learn about it, this series is SUCH a ride.
Five stars easily. And now I will be impatiently waiting to see what happens next because I am absolutely not done with this story yet!!!
Thank you so much to Stacey McEwan, Simon & Schuster, and NetGalley for this eARC!!!
Firstly, thank you to Net Galley, Simon & Schuster, and Stacey McEwan for the ARC. I wanted this book so badly I was literally harassing each of the aforementioned on social media at every opportunity.
That being said, I am going to be completely honest.
I started this book and thought the alchemy of the first was lost (word play). I was thinking the sexy magic of Patrick was gone, the chemistry between him and Nina had fizzled, and then as I was still awake at 2am sleep deprived and delirious but devouring pages like they were oxygen, I realized how truly incorrect I was.
If you’re a fiction reader, as I am, so much time is spent living in different fantastical worlds. Sometimes it takes an adjustment period to dive back into established territory. Especially, this world as it is so unique to the standard romantasy-esque fare.
However, once I was acclimated back into the (growing) world of Belavere Trench, I did not want to leave. The real world equivalent of Bluff is whatever Stacey puts into these books. They are so addicting.
Patrick really does remain **chef’s kiss**, although, he really takes “touch her and die” to the extreme, which can be a little much.
There are love triangle elements at play here, and truly I hope we are done with this now. I feel it served its purpose of representing the two sides of Nina and thinking about who she really is and what she wants.
My main complaint? That I read this as an ARC and now have to wait longer for the next instalment.
Also- I wouldn’t hate a little more spice, it’s so good, and I get it, leave us wanting more - but like, it’s working, more please.
A Forsaken Prophecy is a thrilling and tension filled adventure, and an excellent sequel to A Forbidden Alchemy.
In the wake of the events and betrayal at Kenton Hill, earth charmer Nina Clarke and Patrick Colson, the acting head of the miners union, are taken by the House and forced to confront Lord Tanner. But a tragic series of events, and the recovery of a mysterious book, lead Nina and Patrick back to the Brink, trying to stay one step ahead of the House and their infantry of magic wielding Artisans. Reluctant allies once more, can Nina and Patrick find their way back to each other in light of all the betrayals on both sides?
I LOVED this one! LOVED IT! A Forbidden Alchemy was a favorite book last year, and I am absolutely thrilled to have received an early copy of A Forsaken Prophecy. We see some familiar faces, have some new POV chapters, and learn more about the House and the Artisans. We also learn more about Idia and the history of Belavere Trench, and how much those in power seek to control the narrative. This book was full of twists, action, and so much romantic tension. It is a true slow-burn, as Nina and Patrick must deal with their past betrayals, and the cuts that go too deep, but the payoff is so worth it. I also really loved the historical arc with Idia, and the underlying thread of women fighting for their rights and freedom for centuries. This book keep me so engaged throughout - it is literally non-stop. I can not wait for Book 3!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Saga Press for the advanced copy of this incredible book. All opinions are my own.
I saw someone say something along the lines of “when men perform magic, it’s a miracle, but when women perform magic, they’re called witches and burned at the stake.” And I can’t help but feel like that overall sentiment has woven its way throughout this story. Women- take heed, this one is for us.
What a strong second installment in this trilogy. It picked right up where we left off and we were in on the action from start to finish. Getting the backstory of the three daughters in pieces as we travel through Belavere was masterful and OF COURSE we ended in the location we did. It all makes perfect sense. I also think the varied POVs added so much more to the story and allowed us to really keep tabs on how the characters were affecting each other even when they’re not in the same places.
Nina and Patrick are so imperfectly perfect. Their story…I’m obsessed with it. Patrick is everything. The way he thinks, speaks, acts around Nina and even more importantly, when Nina isn’t in the room?? If we could all be so lucky. And the tension between the two of them? TAUT. I was begging right alongside Nina, tbh. 😮💨 Why are suspenders doing it for me?
Overall, this book only solidified my love for this series. The ending had my jaw on the ground and I will be (im)patiently waiting for book 3 to see how this epic story concludes.
