Following the British army's surrender at Yorktown in October 1781, pro-British Native American tribes persisted in attacking American frontier settlements along the Ohio River. In response, a militia of nearly 500 mounted Pennsylvanians and Virginians, led by Colonel William Crawford, invaded Ohio in early 1782. Their mission was to demolish the villages of hostile tribes like the Delaware and Shawnee. Despite their familiarity with forest combat, the troops advanced westwards into the prairies of the Sandusky River Valley.
