Lost and separated from his guardian angel, Nate’s succumbing to the dragging weight and drowning noise of his declining mental health once more. And now, a new, yet loveless, relationship threatens to rapidly destroy the happiness and progress Nate made with Raziel at his side.
When a Valentine’s Day celebration with his new partner Rael turns into an eye-opening disaster, Nate is reunited with Raziel–his guardian angel, his love.
But despite their joyful reunion, Nate is not the sole reason Raziel returned. A dark plan has been brewing in Heaven, and Raziel needs allies to thwart it. Navigating old and new relationships, Raziel and Nate have to rebuild their trust and forge unlikely alliances, while making up for all the time they spent forced apart.
Will they stop Judgment Day, or is the world doomed?
Jake Vanguard (they/them) is an indie author of queer dark fantasy, science fantasy, horror, and a slice of erotica. In their stories, they love exploring queerness and contradictions, love and connections, family and friendship. The first two books of the Deity Chronicles trilogy – FIRST SNOW and FIRST ROSE – are available now, as well as the paranormal novel, HIGANBANA (Angelverse 1), with more to come. REMNANTS OF RELICS is their first curated anthology, a product of love and community, about the struggles and joys one works with when losing or gaining a new part of themselves.
When not writing, they love gaming and cuddling their kitties.
This was the perfect sequel to Higanbana and such a fitting end for the duology.
While the first book allowed us to go on a journey of personal healing and falling in love with both Nate and Raziel, the second book gives us two characters who are still on their healing journey but who have more tools to work with, two people who are already in love and rebuilding things that were previously lost, all to the backdrop of world-ending chaos leading up to an epic close.
The lore, beautifully built up and introduced in Higanbana, continued to expand in Kintsugi and we got a really good look into Raziel's side of things. I really enjoyed getting to know even more supernatural beings and I absolutely *loved* Azazel.
Nate also had more agency in this book and I really enjoyed seeing him take charge, while Raziel was a loving partner but a responsible supernatural being, fulfilling both his roles wonderfully. It was nice to get a better look at his past too.
I really enjoyed the Jamie subplot and I hope we get to see more of these characters and this world in the future.
Truly a beautiful close to this duology and can't wait to devour everything else this author has to give.
"He was glowing, a perfect being made of the night sky and divinity."
Kintsugi is a wonderful continuation of Higanbana and while the first book is very much Nate's story, Kintsugi is Raziel's. This book explores our angel's story, it gives the reader a deeper look into the supernatural side of things and lets us watch Nate grow.
Among many things I am totally charmed by Raziel's true form and I love when author's include little details about characters like the angel's freckles...
Another detail I adore are both the book titles and covers. Like, look up the meanings of Higanbana and Kintsugi! Jake Vanguard wrote seemingly little books - on page count - while really giving us great books emotionally and in themes of mental health and healing.
This duology is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Wrap yourself in a blanket and read these books. They are worth it.
What a great sequel to Higanbana. I loved that we finally got to see a lot of the lore and history of Heaven, as well as Raziel’s backstory, in Kintsugi. This was an interesting take on Christian mythology and the way it was weaved into the story felt natural and set up the stakes and tension well. I felt like it was a bit of a slow start but around the quarter mark things amped up and I couldn’t put the book down. The epilogue was lovely and wrapped up the duology perfectly.
Also… Jamie my GOAT. Absolutely love this development for him, and I’m excited for the companion novel.
I received this book as a free Advanced Reader Copy for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
