Cute, cheesy book but a bit boring... if you just to see a cute love story, this is the book for you but seriously nothing happened. Love the characters but I feel the story could have been more

A great start to a new series from Samantha Christy. A single parent, small town, and found family romance. Calloway Creek and the Cruz family set the backdrop.

We follow single parents Carter and Kenna, who do everything they can for their kids, putting themselves on the back burner. They meet due to an accident and bad weather. There is a spark, but also walls, Kenna’s are high and thick. But she cannot deny the kids, as they too have formed a bond. I think fate had a hand in these two meeting and keeping them together.
But Kenna has a past and it is about to catch up with her.
I loved the slow burn, the protector in Carter, and the suspense. I enjoyed this story, and am waiting for the next one.

When you are on a job, bringing in a wrecked car, but the single mom has no where to go, you have to help her. This story is full of drama, attraction, unexpected events and feelings involved. Also, dealing with their own business problems, with another business opening, which takes away from theirs. This story is about family, support, true chemistry between these two and can he convince her to trust him. Beautiful story ❤️.

Ugh this one was a miss for me. I struggled with it because I mostly felt bored 😭 it had all the makings of being a fav of mine (dual single parents, single mom on the run, disability rep, etc.) But I put this down and picked it up more times than I want to admit. And the big reveal of her secret towards the end just ended up losing me. It was a cute read, but just didn't have that spark for me.

Single father/white knight and secret lottery winner single mother/damsel in distress, age gap, M/F romance. Bonus epilogue available from author. Content warnings: FMC was 14 when her mom died of an aneurysm; FMC paid her college loans by being a non-sexual escort; Amelia's paternal grandparents paid FMC $50,000 to forget their son; FMC's much older ex-husband is an indebted, gambling addict who ended up incarcerated after he shot a collector 4 times; FMC won $50 million in the lottery and doesn't know how to use it to protect herself and her daughter; MMC's parents are both deceased (MMC was 25 when his mom died of an aneurysm. MMC's father died "years" before his mother.); MMC was a teenager when his teenaged girlfriend abandoned their son to him after he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and never appeared in the book; MMC and his siblings are facing the possibility of losing their business because of a balloon loan payment; and major other man drama (FMC's ex-husband, Cyrus Kelly).

Carter Cruz (32) is the oldest of four children, a never-married/single father of a disabled son (Christian is his 15-year-old son coping with cerebral palsy), a partner with his siblings in their mechanic shop/towing service, and lives in a small fictional town in New York. Kenna Bennett (24; aka Kenna Roberts/Kenna Kelly) is an estranged preacher's daughter, divorcee, single mother (4-year-old daughter named Amelia), and recent $50 million lottery winner. Kenna was running away from NYC when she wrecked her new car in Calloway Creek. Carter towed her car and instantly fell in love with her. He offered her his finished basement while her car was being repaired. They were mattress dancing within a week and married within three months of meeting.
What didn't make sense to me was Kenna's ignorance of how to protect herself and her daughter with her winnings. I also don't understand how she's only been estranged from her father for 7 years, but his church receptionist/congregation didn't know her. There was no mention that her father had moved around.
Overall, suspending reality for this book was difficult, but I liked Amelia and Allie. Most of the Calloway Creek residents who already have books were mentioned. There was also a predictable guest appearance by Ethan Stone. While I like interconnected standalones within a series, this author's books are increasing in number and because they all interconnect, it is difficult to remember who is who. I don't recommend her work anymore because they all connect and there are quite a few duds. While she used to be one of my favorite go-to authors, her work now makes me feel like an exhausted detective trying to keep facts straight. Also, as a reader, I wish she would let me in on the secret long before the final chapters. It's exhausting. Her work now makes me long for true standalones.

Carter and Kenna are the kind of characters you fall for instantly, not just individually but as a unit, especially with their kids woven so naturally into the fabric of the story. And when the shadows of Kenna’s past begin to surface, the suspense folds seamlessly into the romance.
Kenna is such a force. She’s endured more than most, yet she remains fiercely protective, grounded, and determined to carve out a safe world for her daughter. Her strength isn’t loud—it’s steady, resilient, and deeply felt. And then there’s Carter…sigh. He’s swoony in that quietly powerful way: protective, tender, and so deeply good. I was so excited when Samantha Christy announced that the Cruz family would be getting a spinoff series within the Calloway Creek world. After getting to know Carter as a supporting character in some of the previous books in this universe, I couldn't wait to meet the woman who would complete Carter and Christian's family. She came in the form of fiesty, stronger than she thinks Kenna.... a single parent herself with an adorable little girl who just captured everyone's hearts.
Kenna gets stranded in Cal Creek when she crashes her car during a snowstorm. Carter steps up and offers to let her and her daughter stay in her basement apartment while he fixes up her car. Kenna has been burned by several men in her life — especially the ex-husband she is running from — so she's hesitant to rely on Carter for anything. Or even trust him, for that matter.
But with his quiet, steady presence, Carter wears her down and Kenna learns that he really is one of the good guys. But when Kenna's past catches up with her just as she's ready to stop running, will it destroy everything?
Broken Fortune was a beautiful story. I really enjoyed the development of Carter and Kenna's relationship, which was set against the mystery of the secret she was keeping. I also really loved the continuation of Christian and Bug's friendship (from Tiny Precious Secrets), and was *thrilled* by the development between the two that we got in the bonus epilogue!

Kenna has many secrets that she’s keeping close to her chest. When Carter offers to help her, she feels like she has no choice but she’ll leave as soon as she can, she’s determined not to bring danger to his door. But as the pair spend time together they grow close and Carter is determined to keep this enigmatic woman and her daughter safe.

This is a lovely, sweet, small town romance with all the feels.
Carter is a cinnamon roll hero and the perfect dad to his disabled son.
It may be that this story resonated with me so deeply because I have CP, and I thought Samantha dealt with Christians physical restrictions perfectly.
Kenna is instantly attracted to Carter but knows that she can’t fall for him or the quaint little town he lives in. She is dedicated to her young daughter and determined to keep her safe.
Samantha really writes beautifully, emotional, sweet stories, with relatable characters. There are some tasteful tasteful open door scenes in keeping with the storyline.
I read a paperback version of this book with around 430 pages, an interesting cover and excellent editing.

Broken Fortune was a breath of fresh air! There is never a doubt in my mind that I'm going to be hooked with every word while reading a Samantha Christy book and this one did not disappoint! There is so much to love from Dr. Seuss quotes to chemistry that burn the pages.
We start with Kenna wrecking her car while on the run. She just happens to meet Carter when he tows her car afterwards. All she wants to do is leave but the fact that her wrecked car needs at least a week to get repaired makes that impossible. That leaves her and her young daughter stuck in Calloway Creek.
I love that we don't know why she is running and how she mysteriously has an expensive car and plenty of cash but can't use a credit card to stay at a hotel. That little bit of suspense keeps us on our toes. What I truly loved was the normalcy of building snowman, playing card games, and building tents. Sometimes those small moments turn into monumental moments that turn strangers into a family.
The love between Carter and Kenna felt like the fairy tale kind of love. As you read you know that there is no choice but to make it work. The question is what will be sacrificed to get their HEA? Ever since I started reading Samantha Christy books, I’ve learned that she is able to write these heartbreaking touching stories. And ‘Broken Fortune’ is no exception! From the moment I started reading I knew this book would be an emotional one. And it sure was.
In ‘Broken Fortune’ we read the story of single dad Carter, and single mom Kenna. Carter and Kenna meet when Kenna’s car has to be towed to the garage after a small accident. The last thing Kenna needs is to meet a guy. Because every guy in her life has disappointed her. But Carter and Kenna meeting seems like fate. Right from the start they can’t deny the chemistry between each other. But Kenna is on the run from her past, and she can’t lose her focus and has to keep on moving. Even if Carter seems the one guy who Kenna can trust.
‘Broken Fortune’ was a very fun and romantic read. Carter is definitely a ‘perfect’ guy. And yes, that sounds a bit too good to be true.. but in this story it worked. Kenna is a young mom to her four year old girl, and she has been disappointed so many times in her life. The chemistry between Carter and Kenna was amazing. And Carter definitely made me swoon.
Sure, things move pretty fast in this book. And although I don’t often enjoy that kind of thing, in this story it totally worked. I loved being back in this small town and I can’t wait to read more. This book definitely makes me curious about the other Cruz siblings.

Carter is a single dad to his son, Christopher. He works hard to give his son everything he needs in life, including putting his own life on hold at times. Kenna is a single mom to her daughter, Amelia, and she is doing everything she can for her daughter. If it weren’t for some bad weather and an accident their paths would have never crossed and both of them would have missed out on a perfect connection.
From the moment Carter and Kenna meet there is chemistry, but Kenna also has her walls up a mile high for very good reason. Carter is kind, caring, sweet, and really almost too good to be true. I love these two though. I love their connection. I love the connection their children formed. I love the connection that Carter has with Amelia and Kenna with Christian.
There are so many sweet moments mixed with some emotional moments and I loved them all. I love the little moments these characters share, especially with their kids. Of course, Kenna has a past that is bound to come back and find her and I love how protective Carter is when it comes to that.
I love getting to know more about another Calloway Creek family and I can’t wait to return and get more of the Cruz family.

Oh boy! Where do I begin?
Carter Cruz owns an auto repair shop, Cruz-in. He's out on towing duty when he gets a call about an accident, here enters Kenna, she has skidded off the road in the snow and smashed up her car. She has her young daughter Amelia with her and all her life's belongings in her car. Kenna has left New York and is in her way to florida. The accident has delayed the trip as Carter informs her that her car can be mended but it will take at least a week! Jenna is frantic, she's never been to this town before, she knows no one and she has nowhere to go.
Carter takes pity on her and offers his basement to her, he's been doing it up for his son Christian who is 15 but suffer CP, it's his way of giving him his independence without him moving away.
Kenna intends to continue in her way as soon as Carter repairs her car.
Things don't go to plan, a new firm opens up, threatening the Cruz business and Kenna is hiding a lot of baggage!
Will these two get over the hurdles that life is throwing at them or will it all blow up around them. Will Kenna's ex finally destroy her and take Carter and Christian down with her?
This is a page turner, the characters are amazing, it certainly has all the feels and more.

We have met Carter Cruz in previous stories along with his son Christian. A single Dad not only raising a son with health problems he is desperately trying to keep the family business afloat.
Kenna has had a troubled life, a single Mum making her way to a new start until she and her daughter Amelia find themselves being towed to a small town by Carter. Needing time to have her car fixed, Carter offers to put Kenna and Amelia up for the week. As the time for her to leave draws closer both Kenna and Carter find the situation has become more tangled than either expected and they have to find a way to keep Kenna and Amelia safe while exploring the feelings that have crept up on them.
A beautiful story of unexpected friendships, second chances, and love that might just save them both. This is one of those stories that once you start it will keep you prisoner to the last page. This can be read as a standalone but you will love the people of Calloway Creek in their own stories if you go back and explore the series.

As the time for her to leave draws closer both Kenna and Carter find the situation has become more tangled than either expected and they have to find a way to keep Kenna and Amelia safe while exploring the feelings that have crept up on them.
A beautiful story of unexpected friendships, second chances, and love that might just save them both. This is one of those stories that once you start it will keep you prisoner to the last page. This can be read as a standalone but you will love the people of Calloway Creek in their own stories if you go back and explore the series.

That Carter Cruz
So, I went off the Samantha Christy train for a bit until I picked up The Brothers of Calloway Creek last year and The Way Back To Us earlier this year. Carter Cruz has been a secondary character in a lot of the books that take place in Calloway Creek. How can you not love a single dad to a special needs child? So, I have been looking forward to reading about Carter. What a great story. He gets called to tow someone who had an accident. There he meets single mom, Kenna, and her four year old daughter, Amelia. Kenna has every reason to be a bit nervous around any stranger especially men. What she doesn’t know is that Carter is just the most ooey gooey cinnamon roll guy. Their story was just so heart warming. Little miss Amelia would always throw in some sass that had you chuckling. Their story to happily ever after has a touch, like very mild, of tension in the form of Kenna’s ex. That plot line lingers in the background just simmering away until the end. Overall, such a great story and I love that the at least another Cruz sibling will be getting their story told.

Carter Cruz & Kenna Bennett’s story packs quite the emotional rollercoaster punch. Both single parents with Carter’s son being special needs, they find quite the kindred spirit in each other. But both have sworn off dating for various reasons. But seeing someone else treat your flesh & blood with love & respect when they don’t have to…it breaks down walls. Due to vehicle issues, Kenna find herself stranded in the small town of Calloway Creek while on the run. But she l quickly finds herself never wanting to leave. But when the past comes knocking, she will do what she has to do to save those she cares about.
Everything about this story had me on edge & swooning all at the same time. Christian, Carter’s son, & Amelia, Kenna’s daughter, quickly stole the show. And their sweet little relationship trumped that of siblings. I also loved the addition of Bug (Christian’s “best friend”) to their dynamic. Thelma way that Carter & Kenna just completed each other to become the family both of them always needed…absolute kismet.

Cruz is the mechanic/tow truck driver who comes to the accident and helps them out. He has a lot going on in his life and no plans to date, even with his family wanting to set him up.
They each have so much going on in their own lives, and a relationship is the last thing either is looking for. However unexpected their connection and chemistry are, though, they can't help but fall for one another.
This was a fantastic start to another series set in Calloway Creek. It was fun seeing characters and references to other books/series in the town. If you have read some of those books, it's really cool to pick up on those references. However, you don't have to have read all of them in order to jump in with this one.

Truly inspiring beautiful story
I love Samantha’s books and had been waiting in anticipation for this book. I certainly wasn’t disappointed, I didn’t want to put it down!
Samantha has a way of writing such great stories, you get all the emotions and ups and downs that you would expect, but no unnecessary angst, something I am not a fan of.
I feel as if I am there watching the story play out. I have read all the books featuring Calloway Creek, Samantha has a great way of describing everything. I love that she includes some of the characters from previous books.
This book features Carter single Dad to Christian and co owner with his 2 brothers and 1 sister in an automobile business, and Kenna with her adorable daughter Amelia who is running away from a troubled past.
I am definitely not going to give the plot away, just to say there were one or two things I didn’t see coming! I loved the special HEA. And I loved the bonus episode.
I can’t wait for Lincoln’s story.

Samantha Christy starts off a new series with Broken Fortune. I love that we are staying within the same little town and see some familiar faces. But it can be read as a standalone if you are new.

Christy returns to the small town of Calloway Creek to tell the story of Carter Cruz, a very appealing blue collar hero and single dad to a special needs teen. (Carter was featured as the kind and straight talking best friend in Christy's previous book, The Way Back to Us.) It's a story of found family when he meets and helps single mom Kenna and her adorable 4 year old Amelia.
This is a very slow burn - my rating is prime based on the pacing. From the very beginning, it's apparent that Kenna is on the run. While she's living with and has developed a very close relationship with Carter, Kenna doesn't trust him with the full story of what she's escaping until the last quarter of the book. This heroine has been disappointed and deceived in the past and has mile high walls. Carter is a genuinely warm and giving person with the patience to give Kenna time to realize that what you see is what you get.

Samantha Christy definitely can write a book that will make your heart fill with love. I knew Carter Cruz would be something special. The single dad has a heart of gold. I loved him from the start.
Kenna and Carter have that unexplainable chemistry and it is amazing. This love at first sight story is one that will make you swoon. I loved both of these characters and enjoyed the story. Carter is a mechanic and a single dad with so much love for the ones he hold close. Kenna and her daughter get stuck and meet a white knight that saves them. I felt like you could feel the tension between both characters immediately. Kenna wanted to move on as fast as she could. But fate had other plans.

Carter and Kenna had chemistry from the beginning. Both single parents, with only their kids being the most important part of their lives and the love of their lives, until they found each other.
Kenna is determined to keep her daughter safe and knows she can’t stay in one place long but when Carter opens his home up to them while her car is being fixed, they both find themselves falling more and more for each other but Kenna is afraid to trust anyone and has to keep a clear mind so that she can keep not only her daughter but Carter and his son safe from her past.

I adore Samantha Christy’s writing. And all the series set in and around Calloway Creek. She’s done the rich families. This new blue collar series, the Cruz siblings will be great, if Carter’s story is any indication.
I think we e met Carter and his sone Christian in prior series.

He meets Kenna and her adorable Amelia, when her SUV crashes on black ice.
She’s lost and scared and ready to run. Very distrustful of other people. We come to find out why. The entire slow burn romance. Carter’s protective instincts. He falls first. Not just for Kenna, but equally as much for Amelia.
There are few authors who write with such sensitivity and grace.

Calloway Creek and Carter. Freaking Cruz. I think that's enough said! Phew this man was so dreamy; how could he not be? Samantha Christy knows how to write a swoony man! I feel like I have been waiting for this story for so long and I knew that I would fall so hard for Carter's love. I had such hearts in my eyes for the way he immediately fell for Kenna and Amelia. I am usually not one to go for an insta-love situation but this story went so much deeper than that. There was a perfect blend of mutual protection from both of our MCs and even though we did not initially see what Kenna was running from, I was connecting with her and wanting the protection that she never got from another man. Can not wait for more form this crew!

God idk where to start. Reading Samantha’s other books you got glimpses of Carter and his siblings. Reading his book it’s like wow. Carter and Kenna were made for each other. It’s like fate brought them together. God really does work in mysterious ways. Kenna needed to leave NYC to go to Calloway creek and find Carter. Carter needed that person who he could give his attention too as well as be their for his son. I loved how Kenna loved her daughter. Amelia was the cutest thing ever. I loved the way Carter never gave up on Kenna. Her ex husband was a trash bucket and deserved everything he got. In all I was so happy for Kenna and Carter. I can’t wait for the next book. Another great one
I've looked forward to Carter & Christian's story for a while now. It was worth the wait! Amazing story of a single dad (my favorite troupe) and a single mother. Best of both troupes. But throw in a physical disability and it just brought everything to a new level of perfection. The interaction between father and son was endearing and the quotes from Dr Seuss books simply the best.
I love how the characters from her earlier books are weaved into the storyline.
I cannot wait to read all the Cruz family stories as I am certain they will be as amazing as all S Christy books. Highly recommended
