AHHHH I GOT THE e-ARC FOR THIS!! thank you so much to netgalley, the author and victory editing for giving me the e-ARC of Ruin Me in exchange for an honest review!
First off, a massive thank you to Hanna for letting me be part of her AR team 🤗
I really enjoyed this read. I got completely immersed and finished it in one sitting. The pacing is fast-ish, with the tension building at just the right speed. I appreciated that the author gave us time to actually get to know the characters instead of dropping us into chaos from page one. Squad K (aka the kiddos squad) totally stole my heart. Their friendly banter was funny and so real. The friendships and trust that built up within the group felt authentic and just added so much to the story. And our MCs? I loved their bickering, the push and pull, all the chemistry. Malakai could definitely Ruin Us all. 😜☺️
Thank you to the amazing Hanna for making me part of her street team and giving me the opportunity to read the ARC of this book.
From the first page I was hooked by her writing style, world building and characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and would probably have devoured it in one sitting if I had not needed to sleep, take care of my little ones and work!
Ruin Me follows the story of Ethalyn and her journey to self acceptance, love, friendship and finding her inner power. Alongside her life long friend Lionel (the boy next door vibes mixed with Jacob Black & Dain Aetos), Ethalyn is determined to make her life better. Along the way she meets Malakai, the guy you should hate but who winds their way into your affection. I loved the banter and the constant tease of what will happen next.
For me, what made this book stand out, and why I gave it 5 stars, was the time Hanna Scaalez has spent in actually building her characters personalities and giving the reader the time to feel attached to them before the drama truly unfolds. I rarely feel properly invested in my characters so really enjoyed being drawn into Ruin Me!
I NEED the next book desperately and shall be impatiently awaiting more!
If you enjoy fast-paced writing and rollercoaster rides, then this read is for you. I was super lucky to receive an arc from the Author, and I’m so glad I signed up for it. Though it became pretty clear the more I read this that I did not entirely know what I was signing up for because this was so much more than I thought it was going to be.
This at its core, is a story about War between different factions, mages, demons, Demons and the humans, all hating one another for simply being different, a hatred that becomes more and more obvious is learned, rather than warranted. Entire groups of people hated for the actions of a handful of people, and the true enemy is something far worse.
It’s more than that, though, because woven throughout is growth, not just for our main character, but for all of the characters throughout; it’s about learning, it’s about coming to terms with who you are at your very heart, and accepting yourself. It’s about letting go of your fear, and doubt and learning to love yourself, for who and what you are. Honestly, something we could all take note of.
The relationships that grow between all of our character’s is well done, and they feel real. These are a group of strangers (outside of Ethalyn and Lionel) who are thrown together in war, and it’s kind of a sink-or-swim kind of thing. You need to trust one another, you need to have each other’s back, and each of the characters just vibe together, mostly because all of their personalities are so different, and yet, they are strangely so compatible together. What makes it work is all of the characters are flawed, in one way or another, save, perhaps for Mey. They aren’t perfect; they are all in some way a little broken, a little raw, trying to survive in a world that isn’t meant for survival. They find a home in each other.
I have also never gone through so many emotions when it comes to a group of characters before, Ashley had me laughing at inappropriate moments, Nate had been swooning, he’s sweet, and so protective over his sister, Mae, the strength she has, at the face of everything she has going on in her life, im a little envious of. Lionel, I have never been angrier, and wanted to shake someone as badly as I did him. He had me ready to grab the pitchforks for a bit there.
I, however, still dislike Eve. The small bit towards the end will never redeem her. Ever. I have never hated someone so much as I do her. I started this book wondering why both Ethalyn and Ashley hated her. I ended the book going oh, that’s why. Their hatred for her, wasn’t enough if i’m being honest.
The relationship between our two mains, though, is a beautiful, tension-filled slow burn, and honestly i have to hand it to Ethalyn, because I’d have folded so hard, way sooner than she did. I love a mmc who can wax poetically and he says such pretty things, and I swear if anything happens to him in the next book, im going to riot because Malakai deserves the world, he really does.
The book is fast-paced, and it works, because that’s what war is, it’s fast and brutal, and we do not get many chances at breathing, and sitting in the good, but it makes you savour them all the more. There are twists, and while I saw one of them coming the others blindsided me, one so much. So I was like, how did I miss this, given what we’ve just learned? I was on the edge of my seat, constantly. I laughed, and I cried, and I contemplated what the hell could possibly happen now.
“Maybe you should try looking away, then.” He huffed a quiet laugh, the sound low and rough, like it had been pulled from somewhere deep. “Oh, no,” he smiled, voice dropping as he spun me back into his chest. “I think I’d rather let myself burn.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ARC review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you very much for Hanna and NetGalley for sending me an arc copy of Ruin Me. I was over the moon when I got accepted and hoped for a good time reading this book but oh boy what I got once something utterly, ridiculously, beautifully, jawdroppingly amazing.
The story is so good and its full of so many twists and turns what will keep your eyes peeled on the pages for endless hours.
It caused me physical pain to actually put the book down time to time. I wanted to be consumed by it.
The characters are absolute gem. The FMC is strong, witty and has her heart in the right place. I loved everything about her. She is a force to be reckoned with. The MMC I could write about for ages. He is exactly the type of main male character who will grab your heart, twist it and melt it at the same time. Both of their development as individuals and as a couple was amazing to see. And now on the side characters. This bunch will make you laugh and make your heart melt. The banters were hilarious, their dynamic is perfection. It was very difficult trying to mask my giggles while reading on the train. I loved them all!
What can I say after all this? If you haven’t read Ruin Me I am not sure what are you waiting for. You will love this but be prepared for an ending which will leave you say WHAT THE F*CK out loud, so make sure you are not in a public space when reach the end of the book.
Thank you very much once again for Hannah for sending me the ARC and to also ruin all my future book experiences! Because what can top this up?!
First off all thank you to @Hanna K Scaalez for the opportunity to read you books before the release!! This will be an ARC-review
This books had me in a chokehold from the first page!! The characters are do lovable and omgosh I think I found a new shadow daddy🤭 The cliffhanger was insane and I can not wait for the rest of this story

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with an ARC of Ruin Me in exchange for an honest review.
Ruin Me was a fast-paced, intense read that pulled me in right from the start. Set in a world where the “ungifted” have been locked in a brutal war against mages and demons for decades, the stakes feel immediately high—and they never really let up.
Our FMC, Ethalyn, is ungifted and left with little choice but to enlist in the military alongside her childhood best friend Lionel (who gives major protective Dain Aetos vibes). They’re quickly thrown into active combat with their new squad (go K Squad!), and the danger feels real and constant as they fight to survive against mages and demons alike.
One of the standout strengths of this book is the characters—not just the main ones, but the side characters too. Hanna K. Scaalez clearly puts care into making the entire cast feel alive. Bomb girl Ashley deserves a special mention: hilarious, unhinged, fiercely protective, and an absolute scene-stealer every time she appears.
Despite the heavy themes and constant threat of war, the book strikes a great balance by weaving in humor and lighter moments, which helps offset what could otherwise be an intense story. Loyalties are tested, truths are questioned, and Ethalyn is forced to rethink everything she thought she knew about her world.
Add in plenty of yearning and a touch of spice, and this was a really enjoyable read. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where it goes next.
This book crept up on me. It didn’t rush, didn’t explain itself too much — it just settled in and let the tension build until I realised I was holding my breath while reading.
The atmosphere is where Ruin Me really shines.
“The stillness was suffocating, heavy as a held breath, as if the forest itself was waiting.”
That silence stays with you.
“Gone was the sound of birdsong—nature had fallen unnervingly silent.”
There’s this constant feeling that something isn’t right, even before anything actually happens.
“A haze shimmered between the trees, blurring reality and making my skin prickle with unease.”
The fear feels instinctive rather than dramatic — the kind where your body reacts before your brain does.
“‘Do you feel that?’ I asked, tightening my grip, my instincts screaming before my mind could catch up.”
And when things finally escalate, it’s intense without being overdone.
“The ground beneath our boots trembled, subtle but undeniable, like a warning we were meant to heed.” “Its eyes burned like furnaces in the dark, filled with hunger and something far worse—intent.”
Overall, Ruin Me is dark, immersive, and quietly unsettling. If you enjoy slow-building tension, eerie settings, and stories that let the atmosphere do the heavy lifting, this one is worth picking up.
I give this 4.5⭐️ Oh how I loved this story♥️. 🤛I absolutely and totally immersed myself into all these incredible characters.
From a world of ungifted, mages and demons, comes this amazing story about a brutal war, many secrets, trust issues, family, friendship and love.
Our FMC When Ethalyn meets the Lieutenant, animosity and vigilance is instant and absolute for both parties. She holds somewhat innocent ideologies and yet she is strong and determined to win her ways. I love how she can be such a badass but also loving and fragile.
Our MMC He is ruled by pain and emptiness. He could almost kill with his tyrant ways and arrogant attitude. He is brutal and unapologetic. With a chip on his horns and guilt on his heart, he will never care for anyone, not even a little bit-e "pun intended". He will bend but only on his terms. And trust me, he is also full of himself in so many good ways.
All the side characters have a place in this story and in my heart. They are gripping, intriguing, loving and amusing. The chitchat is so entertaining. Nothing keeps you grounded and calm such as some good banter! I'm still laughing as I write this and remembering some of the comebacks🤪
The world building is awesome and well illustrated. It is just enough to keep you implicated without being overwhelmed. When engaged in battles, details of the exchanges such as magic castings and weapon crashes, are easy to perceive and imagine.
In the end... Well "color me freaking mind-blown!!"🤯🤯🤯
Hanna K Scaalez gave us a brilliant story and I can't wait to read book 2!❣️
If you love to read books such as fantasies, military, enemies to lovers and action...you must read this book.
Received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I absolutely loved everything about this book. It's a story of war between factions and a elemental magic system, laced with lies and mistrust. It's filled with healing, accepting who you are and found family. It's a slow burn, with forbidden love and forced proximity, and it was perfect.
The banter and the energy between the main characters was incredible, I really love their relationship. But my fave characters? Nate & Ashley, all the way. From their first appearance I was in love. Nate with his constant flirting and his never-dying love for his sister, and Ashley's bad-ass bitch vibes. God-tier. This book put me through all of my emotions, just like a good book should. Nate had me laughing throughout and Malakai made me jump between all my feelings, constantly, while someone just made me whish they would just get eaten by demons. All (except someone) grew so much and just made me love them more and more. It was fast paced, but not in a way that felt rushed anywhere, it was very well written.
"Boys, boys, careful. If you keep puffing up your chests like that, someone might think you're in love."
"So we just put a leash on a demon and tell it that it's a good boy?"
"You, miss girl-on-fire, are officially a war crime."
"You mean the part where I told you I'd wait for you until the stars burn out?"
I read this book in less than 24 hours, and honestly, I think that says everything. I went to sleep around 2am with absolutely ZERO regrets 😌 Lack of sleep aside, I really loved this book. The FMC, Ethalyn, is a total badass, strong, capable, and not afraid to stand for herself while still being vulnerable and seeing the good in people. She felt real. The story takes place in a world where there’s an ongoing war between Humans, Mages (magic wielders), and Demons. All fighting for survival. Ethalyn comes from a starving village, and the only way to earn money and have a better life is by joining the human (ungifted) army whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill mages. The plot is fast-paced. The characters are an absolute delight, Ashley is 100% my ride-or-die kind of girl; and Malakai… don’t even get me started. He can absolutely “ruin me” anytime 😏🔥 This book is packed with forbidden love, so much banter, tension you could cut with a knife, found friendships, and just the right amount of spice (and wow, was it good 🌶️). I genuinely could not put it down, and that ending had me immediately needing book two. Ruin Me reminded me exactly why I love the fantasy romance genre so much. I definitely recommend this one.
A Spellbinding Journey Through War, Mystery, and Magic
OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I’m not usually drawn to “military‑style” settings, and I admit it took a few chapters for me to really get into it. But once their first mission started, the story seized me and I devoured the book in 2 days.
The characters have a depth I was not expecting, and I loved them so much for it. I don’t want to give too much away, there are so many layers and character building, the author did a fantastic job of making me care for them.
From the outset, there’s a sense that the human‑mage‑demon war is just the surface of something far more intricate. Revelations drop fast and furious, especially during the second half of the book. The author did not stop. Each twist propels you forward, making it impossible to put the book down.
I’m grateful to NetGalley for delivering this ARC. It gave me a chance to discover a hidden gem before its official release.
If you love a good mystery wrapped in a sprawling war‑torn world, this book is a must‑read. Its richly drawn characters, relentless pacing, and the promise of deeper secrets lurking behind the human‑mage‑demon conflict will keep you hooked from the first clash to the final, unforgettable revelation.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the eARC of Ruin Me in exchange for my honest review. This book had a lot going for it. The magic system felt original; the dynamic between magic wielders, the ungifted, and demons allowed classic romantasy elements to be woven in while still feeling fresh. The found family aspect was particularly strong, with the characters growing closer as secrets are revealed and trust is built under high-stakes circumstances. The banter flowed well, the tension was effective, and the enemies-to-lovers arc delivered, with even a hint of a love triangle and trial-style challenges adding to the plot. However, while I enjoyed many aspects of the story, it didn’t fully hook me. At times the pacing felt rushed, particularly as the narrative moved quickly between major plot points, from military training and forest settings to trials and high-society events, which made some transitions feel abrupt. I also found that some of the dialogue felt slightly forced, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. Overall, this was a fun read with strong genre appeal, and I think fans of romantasy who enjoy found family dynamics, enemies-to-lovers tension, and action-driven plots will get more out of this than I did personally.
Thank you so much to the author Hanna K Scaalez and PA Nick for sending me the e-ARC of this novel I really really enjoyed it!
Ruin Me is set in a world where humans, demons and magically gifted humans (“mages”) exist. At war with each other, protagonist Ethalyn becomes a soldier of the Ashen Corps, and together with her squad they discover secrets, where rivalry and forbidden attraction clashes.
I really enjoyed this novel- so much that I finished it in one day! For lovers of Fourth Wing and Divergent I would highly recommend this book. The banter and relationship between the characters was entertaining and lighthearted. The romance was also an appropriate slow burn, making it irresistible to put down the book.
My only criticism of this book was that it was too short! I was a bit confused at the start and struggled to follow along with the world, particularly in the military ‘school’ aspect, so more development into the world and the fantasy system would have been helpful. But other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
Everyone you should ABSOLUTELY put this book on your TBR when it releases on Feb 23- you will not be disappointed.
This novel was tremendously built and so riveting! Such an intriguing fantasy story with so many twists that I had to go back and double check that my eyes weren't lying along with a major side of adrenaline at some parts that I was screaming at!
Malakai is a broody, dark and malicious entity that has been a thorn in Ethalyn side since she was successful in joining the Ashen Corps to escape her own torturous life and it seems that she traded it in for the cruelty of the Lieutenant himself. You are quickly given whiplash as they banter and bite at each other's mere existence until the tides change and their inner secrets are revealed to each other and thus binding them to each other as worlds collide on the brink of a war they both want to stop. Working to unite the separated, unaware of the deception burrowed closely within ranks until it is too late. The team can't escape the brutality of being blindsided; the blood, death and betrayal as they fight for not only themselves but each other. But the fight has simply just begun!
Thank you Hanna for giving me another Malakai to swoon over!
Lectura ARC.

ARC read. I loved having the opportunity to read this book before it gets published..
What can I say, I loved the story, from page one I was hooked on the plot, it has a bit of everything, it never felt repetitive or slow.
The slow burn in this book is magnificent, one of my favorites.
It shows characters that develop and grow throughout the story.
And personally, some characters will stay as my favorites.
Ethalyn is recruited into the Ashen Corps, a force of “ungifted” humans whose goal is to defeat the mages and the demons the mages have allowed into their world.
Ethalyn quickly becomes the target of the Lieutenant, Malakai, a surly soldier with a bad temper. He makes her life hell, and she can’t help but push his buttons even further.
There are twists and turns at every corner in this book, secrets revealed, and identities hidden. There were quite a few I didn’t see coming—some of which had my jaw dropping! There is found family within this story for those that adore that trope. My favorite side character is probably Ashley 🖤, who loves blowing things up—literally! By the end of the book I was flying through, unable to put the book down. The spice was delicious! Ethalyn and Malakai’s enemies to lovers journey is written so well! Overall, a solid 4 ⭐️ read and I can’t wait for the next book!
2.75-3⭐️ Ruin Me follows Ethalyn, a soldier navigating a war-torn world, forced to face brutal battles, shifting loyalties, and difficult choices about who to trust, with plenty of secrets to unravel. Overall, this was an easy, fun read. I think the story has potential, but I didn’t fully feel pulled in. I enjoyed the mix of mages, demons, and humans, but you’re kind of thrown straight into the action. That said, the limited world building made it harder to really get hooked on the characters and the story as a whole.
At times, the pacing felt rushed and a bit jumpy, which took me out of it here and there. I can see this being really enjoyable for some readers; it just didn’t fully work for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What an incredible read! Ruin me had me laughing, swooning, crying, and yelling wanting to yeet my kindle across the room!
Hanna did a phenomenal job with the character building. I formed a love hate relationship with some of these characters throughout the book!
This book had me biting my nails pretty much the entire time with anticipation! It’s action packed and full of twists that I didn’t see coming. The build up to that ending 😳 I was definitely not expecting! I need more now 🙏 Thank you Hanna Scaalez for choosing me to read and review an ARC copy of this fantastic story🫶
This story has: ✨Mages ✨Demons ✨Ungifted ✨Tension ✨Betrayal. ✨Rivalry ✨Forbidden enemies to lovers ✨Found family
I loved that Ruin Me started off with a bang right away and got right into the action. I loved Malakai from the beginning even though he was jerk at first. He accepted Ethalyn right from the start even when she didn’t accept herself. The characters were all very distinct and likeable (except maybe 2 people 😆). A few of the twists I was able to predict early on, but this was still very entertaining. A few things I didn’t like were the nicknames Malakai had for Ethalyn. I usually like a nickname in a book but for some reason, I didn’t like it here. I also didn’t think parts of the plot and story were fully developed, but again, I was very entertained and am intrigued for book 2 after that cliffhanger.
I absolutely ate this look up. It was a quick Romantasy that had a good slow burn slow burn where you don’t quite know which way the FMC gonna go. The plot has a lot of opportunity for depth and world building. I’m hoping this ends up being a series with a couple books in it because I feel like the plot line in the characters really has what it takes to create that.
There’s a lot of elements of found family, dystopian war between elemental factions, and enemies to lovers. If any of these things interest you then I definitely recommend taking a look. I would love to see a little bit more character, development, and storyline development in the next book and that’s the only reason I can’t give it a full five stars. Otherwise I really enjoyed it.
Ruin Me is the first book in the Cindara Chronicles series by Hanna K. Scaalez. The story follows Ethalyn, who in a world brought to the brink of starvation in a war between "ungifted", mages and demons, is fighting for her own survival Military, demons, elemental magic and forbidden love. Perfect for lovers of the Dragon Age games, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Divergent. The FMC Ethalyn is just an amazing, fiery character who invades your mind constantly and the MMC Malokai OMG you need him in your life The way @hannakscaalez builds up all the other characters in the storyline is just unbelievable! You will fall in love with them all and maybe "not like" some others but they find a place in your heart! I seriously cannot wait for Book 2 !!!
You're sucked in immediately as hopefuls try out for the Ashen Corps. Already getting to know the characters quirks from the outset.
As the story unfolds you learn more about each of the main characters. I have to say my favourite was Ashley throughout, little and feisty. The build up to the ending was brilliant, still had me guessing which way it would go and left me pondering on that final twist.
You will switch between loving and loathing some of the group, it's been very cleverly written.
Congratulations Hanna K. Scaalez, now I can't wait for book two!
This is one of my new favourite romantasy books! 6 stars. The plot, the main characters, the side characters, everything was just perfection. I truly could not put it down and I am so ready for the next book!
Malakai, the MMC is just 👌🏻 the banter between him and the FMC, Ethalyn, is top tier. Ashley, one of the side characters is just an absolute badass with a heart of gold and I love her.
This book is dark, brutal and emotionally gripping. The world feels harsh and unforgiving, where it journeys Ethelyn's life as a soldier in the Ashen Corps. This book contains found family, rivalry and tension, with a forbidden romance that simmers beneath the surface. The magic system contains danger and is unpredictable, with terrifying demons, and constant uncertainty about who to trust. Nothing in this book is as simple as it seems where betrayals hit hard and this book also contains a lot of twists.
This. Was. Incredible. I couldn’t stop reading it. It truly sucks you in from the very first page. It’s action packed, funny and exciting… then there the romance 🥹❤️❤️❤️❤️ Malakai is cocky, sarcastic and just amazing in every sense. I literally ate all every line that came out of his mouth. This is enemies to lovers and a slow burn. But oh my…. It has a wonderful payoff 💜💜 That ending though, I need more!!! I couldn’t easily read another 900 pages of this story and never get bored. Hanna, your book is truly amazing and I can’t thank you enough for letting me read this early!!!
I received this as an eArc from the author. Thank you for allowing me to review Ruin Me. This was a non-stop read and I could not put it down. It was a perfect combination of forbidden romance and forced proximity. I absolutely loved Malakai's character. The tension between him and Ethalyn was perfect. The side characters were equally as likeable and you get to know the whole team really well and feel for them. The last couple chapters had me on the edge of my seat and I will eagerly await Book 2!
This was a solid 3.5 stars. The start of the book felt a bit chaotic to me but it quickly found its legs and fell into a better rhythm. It was fast-paced, with something always going on. If you enjoy mages/demons, for example the Legendborn series, you’ll probably like this as well. I enjoyed the found family aspect and the characters in the squad. There’s a bit of a romance that I’m looking forward to diving deeper into in future books and even a pinch of spice to top it off. Overall, a fun read!
The tension, chemistry and slow burn between Malakai and Ethalyn was so good! I really enjoyed this book! The storyline was intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat, with a cliffhanger ending that I can’t wait to find out what happens next! There were a few parts that were confusing and it jumped around a bit, but it was easy enough to figure out soon after and continue on with the story.
Thank you to Victory Editing through NetGalley for an ARC copy of this book!
This was an easy, fun read. I’ve only really read fantasy the past couple years and this was a different concept with mages, demons and humans versus most of the other books I’ve read, so I enjoyed that. Great found-family aspect and lots of witty banter. I will say, I felt like it jumped around a bit sometimes, but not too hard to follow. Ended with a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! Thank you, Victory Editing for providing this ARC through NetGalley.
