Toni Cabell has crafted another addictive blend of adventure, suspense, and no-spice romance in a magical land. I greatly enjoyed the pirates and hidden identity elements of this story, as well as the supporting cast that made the world feel lived in. The pacing allowed for both action and calmer moments with banter/humor. Although I felt Prince Arrendale (MMC) was a tad too perfect, he complemented the feisty FMC well. I was rooting for them all the way about a third of the way in. A wonderful read for lovers of high-seas adventure, court intrigue, and swoony romantasy!

This book starts of beautiful and strong, so much intrigue. Truly showing the harsh realities of circumstances that cause certain decisions to be made that can result in something beautiful. The slow burn romance, wrestling with circumstances that are just trust upon you, and learning to embrace the path set out for you are just a couple of the experiences in this story.
The character development is charming and the setting is absolutely enthralling. Fans of all things pirates and sea faring will absolutely love Girl of Sea and Starlight.

This book follows a feisty captain as she discovers her true identity as the queen of her people and betrothed to a Selkie Prince. It's full of action and adventure while also taking the time to teach important, real life lessons. These are some notes I took during my read. There are spoilers!
The plot is immediately intriguing! The prologue had my hooked on the story and the world. I'm excited to see how the magic affects their relationship—it'll make both characters have less of a choice than they would've without it. I bet that will lead to a lot of frustration and maybe even resentment.
I like that Lainey is blind sided by this arrangement, but it also doesn't feel completely realistic, especially since she's still around the people who know her situation. Why was she kept in the dark about such an important matter? I'm sure that will be revealed, but it feels a bit off initially. I like Arrendale's outlook on the situation—to love her and be loyal to her no matter what—and I'm really glad he has a POV.
The writing style feels very fairytale to me. I picture turquoise seas and bright skies while reading this. It's to the point—a little simplistic but not in a bad way. It feels like a story I would want to grow up with. I would personally categorize this more as middle grades lit than YA lit. I really do enjoy it but it's a little too simple for me now. I can imagine myself reading this to a future child, though!
Because of the simple writing the pacing feels a little fast, but it works with the tone of the story for the most part. I will say I think Lainey grows too fond of Arrendale a little too soon. There is a small time jump that accounts for that, but that means the reader doesn't fully understand her change of heart. I wish there were more scenes with them showing their characters so we could understand that shift. Arrendale's thoughts about Lainey are adorable but also seem a bit unfounded. They don't really know each other but he's completely smitten. More focus on him noticing her actions and personality would've really helped grow their relationship.
I found Blandon to be the most interesting character, and I'm excited to know there will be more of him in the future. The truth of his past was heartbreaking to discovered and added a lot of depth to his character. I honestly found myself hoping that he would be a love interest. He is certainly the most complex character, which draws me to him more than the others.
The Christian allegory is very well done. The Morning Star is there to answer prayers when the characters need Him. He reminds them to put their trust in Him and gives them strength. The message is clear and concise, which is especially great for a younger audience.
Overall, I think this book has a great foundation. The characters are lovable and the plot is exciting. However, it's missing some meat—the pacing is too fast, making it feel like we're skipping over important character and plot moments. I think this would be great for a young audience (9-13), but might not hit the mark with older readers.

Toni has written a book which will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can to find out what happens next!
Lainey is getting ready to celebrate her 18th birthday unaware of the momentous changes this milestone is going to make in her life up to that time of being the captain of a sailing ship! She and her first mate spot something in the water and as they get closer realize it’s a seal tied down to a piece of wood floating in the ocean!
She dives in to cut the seal loose thinking it’s dead but finds it isn’t and brings it aboard only to find out it’s not a normal seal but one that can shape shift as it turns into a human and speaks! She finds out he is a selkie prince and what he tells her is unbelievable! They return to port where she confronts her aunt only to find all he told her is true because her aunt and her first mate were there!
Thus starts Lainey’s new life as she realizes she has a past kept hidden from her for 18 years and now must assume her role as the new queen of what remains of their country with this selkie prince as her husband!
An exciting tale of disbelief, treachery, deception, hidden knowledge to protect her and now becoming aware of who and what she is and the part this selkie prince will play in it all!
Being chased by first pirates, one in particular who has a relationship with her husband as well as trying to control powers she is just gaining by turning 18, Lainey is overwhelmed and unsure who to trust or believe since so much has been hidden from her for good reason but still hidden from her! Then as if that isn’t bad enough there are now goblins to contend with!
Follow their adventures and how what his mother did has caused the rift between his brother and him and also involved goblins in the mix!
It’s a story of action, adventure, friendship, forgiveness, understanding and redemption! It’s a story that will stay with you as you look towards the next book entitled Girl of Wings and Starlight which tells of how a girl was able to help a despised pirate find the courage to change his life after so long!
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend this book as one I know you’ll enjoy and love as much as I have! If you love stories of a person who refuses to give up on his mate, who initially despises him and slowly changes because of what feelings emerge as they are together then you need to read this book!

Having never heard of The Fisherman and Selkie, I am glad I experienced it through Toni Cabell’s reimagining. Girl of Sea and Starlight provided a fun time with characters who I loved getting to know. Toni balances the story with romance, fantasy, and humor and how a fated love doesn’t always mean it will happen easily. The FMC is strong, independent, and doesn’t fall at any man’s feet. The MMC is determined, patient, and allows the FMC to fall at her own pace. Climb aboard for this high seas adventure romance.
Lainey has worked hard for everything she earned in her life. About to turn 18, she is a captain of her own ship, yet isn’t ready for how her life is about to change. While sailing one day she comes across a seal tangled and trapped. She doesn’t even hesitate to jump in and try to save it, realizing that the seal is still alive, thus bringing it aboard her boat. She never expected for the seal to transform into a Selkie prince and she definitely did not see his declaration coming. She is his betrothed and future queen of his kingdom! Confronting her aunt she finds out many things have been kept from her and there is a whole part of her she knows nothing about. Stepping into her new role, her upbringing in the human world makes her a different queen than ever before. She doesn’t sit quietly, but expects to be part of the conversation.
Arrendale suspected his betrothed would be a little surprised at him finding her, but he never expected her to try to throw him overboard her ship. Realizing she has been kept in the dark about his kingdom, he patiently waits for her to come to terms and claim her seat next to him. He has had to wait 18 years for his love to join him and he isn’t going to do anything to scare her away. I love how he is not intimidated by the person Lainey is or expects her to change. She is his queen and the kingdom will adapt to her, not the other way around.
Having never read Toni before, I was intrigued by this book and the synopsis. I fully enjoyed reading the story she wrote and definitely will be reading more of her. There are quiet nods to her faith, however, it doesn’t feel in your face. I am all for authors making their beliefs known, but very much appreciate when they make their books enjoyable for everyone still. I couldn’t get enough of Lainey and Arrendale as they become closer and closer throughout this book. Definitely worth reading if you like romance, fantasy, and reimagining of fairytales.

This was such a fun and surprising book! There is so much story packed into the pages including fantastical creatures like the MMC who is a selkie (seal-shifter) Prince, star-based magic and faith system, pirates, hidden identities, battles, an arranged marriage, voyages through oceans, rivers, lands, and portals, the found-family type love of a ship’s crew and home community, a young but intelligent and feisty FMC, and the portrayal of a most loyal and steadfast romantic love that will warm your heart.
There is also an underlying message about the importance and power of prayer and trusting that God will give you exactly what you need when you need it if you reach out to Him in faith.
It has dual points of view between the MMC and the FMC which was written really well and with distinct voices distinguishing them. It was really fun to get to see inside their minds and know what they were truly thinking and watching their relationship develop over the course of the book. I honestly never knew what kind of characters we would meet or where the story was going to take me from one chapter to the next. This was truly an epic adventure that kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen!

I really enjoyed this no spice Christian YA fantasy. There is romance, portals, a Princess, a selkie shifter, an arranged marriage, magic, and more. This book was originally a novella in a collection and starts out similarly but then takes us into a world and adventure all its own.
In this gender flipped retelling of The Fisherman and the Selkie, Lainey, a human ship captain, rescues a seal, only to find out he’s actually a selkie shifter, and a prince, and her betrothed! She is thrust into a world of magic and fantasy and high stakes. While this forced proximity, only one bed, reverse grumpy/sunshine romance starts out strong on the romance portion, it gives way to elevated young adult fantasy tones - I can totally picture having this book on my shelves for my kiddos to read later on when they are teens. It does a great job with the world building.
I’m excited to continue with this series! We’ve been set up so well for it. After everything we’ve gone through, I can’t imagine what Cabell has in store for us next! The romance in this book is just kisses, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

I really enjoyed this no spice Christian YA fantasy. There is romance, portals, a Princess, a selkie shifter, an arranged marriage, magic, and more. This book was originally a novella in a collection and starts out similarly but then takes us into a world and adventure all its own.
In this gender flipped retelling of The Fisherman and the Selkie, Lainey, a human ship captain, rescues a seal, only to find out he’s actually a selkie shifter, and a prince, and her betrothed! She is thrust into a world of magic and fantasy and high stakes. While this forced proximity, only one bed, reverse grumpy/sunshine romance starts out strong on the romance portion, it gives way to elevated young adult fantasy tones - I can totally picture having this book on my shelves for my kiddos to read later on when they are teens. It does a great job with the world building.
I’m excited to continue with this series! We’ve been set up so well for it. After everything we’ve gone through, I can’t imagine what Cabell has in store for us next! The romance in this book is just kisses, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Now, that alone earns the book a solid four-star rating from me. Because a loyal and committed hero is everything to me, and any story carrying that trope already has earned big points from me. The remaining star to complete the coveted 5 stars was earned by this book by its engrossing plot, excellent storytelling, fantastic world-building, and a hodgepodge of adorable supernatural characters that I had fun imagining in my mind as I read about them. I wish someone could draw them up into visual art because it would be so nice to see what the dryads, trolls, elves, and pixies all look like!
When I got to the end of the book, I was immensely relieved to know the series is just beginning, because I haven't gotten enough of this world of the Four Corners!

Girl of Sea & Starlight by Toni Cabell is an exciting clean fantasy that begins with adventure and suspense never slowing down. The first book in The Starlight Chronicles Series has a type of role reversal in the beginning. Lainey is captain of the ship not knowing her true identity but already she has a take charge personality. I love that the grumpy captain is a woman when often it is a male. Arrendale has a dangerous sibling but that is not all trying to put an end to both, who were betrothed when Laney was a week old. I appreciated hat this even was shared in the prologue. Together they are definitely stronger than apart. Is that how marriage should be, even if it is arranged? What an adventurous story the book continued to be.

Lainey's life seemed very ordinary, sure she was a captain of her boat but she just lived in a small isolated village and was looking forward to her birthday. However, from the moment she rescued a seal - that someone had cruelly strapped to a raft and left to die - her life was never the same. She discovers that not only was the seal not a seal - rather he was a Selkie, and no ordinary Selkie, he was the crown prince AND her betrothed, tethered by magic that will kill them both if she refuses to honour the betrothal contract, but she has rare portal magic (that she can't control), that her fellow villagers aren't human, rather they are different Faerie folk that had been glamoured to look human, the loyal remnants of a destroyed kingdom. Add in that their hiding place is no longer hidden and they have to all flee for their lives from multiple enemies and it is no wonder Lainey is grumpy! This book is a great start to a new series and I look forward to the next book. I received an ARC but this review is my own.

This book was such a sweet read, and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. The pirate adventure paired with faith elements was such a fun combination and made the story stand out.
Lainey was an absolute firecracker—spunky, fierce, and full of personality. I loved watching her navigate the adventure and live up to who she didn’t even know she was. Arrendale was the ultimate green flag on the high seas. He was kind, patient, protective, and everything you could hope for in a hero. The two of them complemented each other so well and made such a great duo you couldn’t help but root for.
There were several moments I didn’t see coming, which kept me eagerly turning the pages. I always appreciate a story that can surprise me while still delivering heartfelt moments.
Overall, this was a clean, enjoyable read from beginning to end. If you’re looking for a sweet pirate romance with faith woven throughout, lovable characters, and an engaging adventure, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I know I can never go wrong with a book by Toni Cabbell. Her stories are always amazing the characters are always written so well.
I have always been interested in selkies, so it is so fun to see a story with a selkie prince. This is also a retelling of a lesser-known tale, and it is always nice to see unique retellings (not that we ever get sick of the popular ones, but I love seeing the creative takes on lesser-known stories).
This story also has one of my favorite tropes: arranged marriage. I also love seeing how the characters respond to the situation and the process of them growing to love each other.
Like all of Toni Cabell's fantasy stories, this story is full of adventure and complex characters. I also appreciated the faith elements in this story and how they can inspire the audience.

This book has a little bit of everything you love in fantasy. You have ship captains, and pirates. A heroine who prefers pants and swords to fancy dresses and jewelry. There’s a hidden paranormal world, and all sorts of different paranormal creatures, all showcased with amazing world building. Of course you have a couple villains and a hero to go along with the heroine. Let’s not forget a dash of romance and danger. And there’s an underlying theme of faith and overcoming life’s obstacles. This book reminds me a lot of CS Lewis‘s Narnia series. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

I am a big fan of All of Toni’s stories and this one doesn’t disappoint!
I consumed this story quickly as I fell in love with the strong and determined Lainey as she nears her 18th birthday, the MC Arrendale is as green a flag as a MMC can be, I loved him from the moment we met him.
The dual POV’s told the story perfectly between both of the MC’s POV’s, I love the back the forth where we as the reader were allowed to get into their minds as we watch Lainey’s outrage to the arranged marriage that she has no idea about nor any say in. Arrendale stays calm and collective through most of his dealings with Lainey and her hesitation towards him.
This book took me back to my childhood love of selkies.

This is what I like in books about strong women, they are most often terrified and overwhelmed but what makes them strong is the way they, inspite of that, do what needs doing and fight what needs fighting.
There’s shifters, magic, family drama, swoony kisses, banter, and tears. And there’s more to come. I’ll be looking forward to the next chapter in this story.

This was a good book. This is a Christian Fantasy story with pirates, royalty, elves, trolls, powerful enemies, and unpredictable magic. It weaves themes of faith and prayer into a simple tale of a selkie prince and a captain turned princess who fight the evil trying to destroy their kingdoms.
This book didn't draw me in and capture my attention that much (except for a part with a big deception), but it was still a good Christian Fantasy story.

Oh the adventure! I loved this story! The characters felt authentic and like they were friends. I love Lainey's sass and fiery temper, but her adorable vulnerable side too. And Arrendale? Oh my goodness, so sweet and good and caring! What a sweeping romantasy adventure! All the feels! I definitely recommend!

This was an interesting tale about a selkie prince and a human princess. The adventure included action, romance, and some unusual actions/occurrences that were similar to those in Princess Bride. While I enjoyed the overall story and the various characters, I didn’t like the none to sudden romance, because I felt as if the relationship progressed far too rapidly without the necessary character development. Granted, that is difficult to write, but that is my personal opinion. However, I would recommend this book for anybody that enjoys a pirate adventure or a Princess Bride type of story.

Arrendale is so swoony and romantic, and Lainey is a bit of a grouch but their chemistry is perfectly written.
I absolutely enjoyed the mix between high stakes, fantasy adventure, and light romance.

I was able to read the short story of this when Toni published it in the Anthology and I fell in love with it then. And this book just satisfies everything!!! It was great to read the familiar part again and everything that was new! Great pacing, lots of emotions, and mystery because you’re trying to figure out why Lainey is needed and what Blandon is up to. Just like before I could not stop reading. And there was one prediction I made about 1 character about halfway through the book and I am soooo right!!! Also this ends on a cliff. Sooo I definitely can’t wait for book 2.

This was a lovely romantasy with likeable main characters and a host of mythical creatures. The story moves at at a good pace with some interesting twists along the way. The budding romance between Lainey and Arrendale was nicely done and the star cat is an adorable addition to the story.

I am so in love with this unique spin on an arranged marriage fairytale. The reluctant ship captain who doesn’t know she’s a princess is sassy, determined, adventurous, and so much fun to read. The Selkie prince who shows up with a proposal he’s waited his whole life to present is a total sunshine and doesn’t give up easily. The plight of their world and the dangerous pirate who is after them draws them into a reluctant allies situation. I really enjoyed how the forced proximity allowed opportunities for the Selkie Prince to win her over. This is a sweet romance with a growing bond filled with caretaking and protective love.

I had so much fun with this selkie romance. It was unpredictable in the most delightful way that kept me glued to the pages, on the edge of my seat.
Arrendale was wonderfully swoony, and I couldn’t help smiling every time he was on the page. Whether in seal or man form, he was adorable. He was the perfect man for our cranky & impatient but lovable captain Lainey. They balanced each other perfectly. His gentle, calm, & steadfast nature complemented her fierce & fiery temperament, making them stronger together than either could have been alone. His patience, grace, and unconditional love gave her the space to grow into the woman she was meant to be.
Every good story needs a good villain and I REALLY loved the author’s take on the villain in this book. It was one of my favorite parts of the story.
The cast of side characters was a ton of fun and added a good dose of humor. As a cat lover, I especially loved Willa the cat, one of the best cat side-kicks ever. Seriously, her character was genius. I am so excited there will be more books in the series because I’m not ready to say goodbye to all these lovable characters.
I especially appreciated the beautiful Christian symbolism woven throughout the story. It added so much heart and hope to an already unforgettable adventure.
