Northern Bite

In a small northern town, stories travel faster than facts.

When Kevin returns home, he finds the place unchanged on the surface — the same roads, the same diners, the same faces — but something beneath it has shifted. A robbery at the local convenience store has everyone talking, and his brother’s name sits uncomfortably at the center of it.

As the town closes ranks and rumors harden into certainty, Kevin moves through a landscape of half-truths, conflicting accounts, and quiet judgments. Witnesses remember different details. Conversations change depending on who’s listening. Even within his own family, loyalty and denial blur together until no version of events feels stable.

Northern Bite is a tense, atmospheric literary crime story about small-town pressure, fractured truth, and the cost of silence. It explores what happens when a community decides who you are — and how far one man can carry a story before it breaks him.

Sometimes the most dangerous thing isn’t the truth — it’s how many versions of it exist.

Northern Bite by Todd Morgan is a sharp, quietly unsettling reminder that in small towns, stories don’t just spread…they mutate.
The story dives deep into the way gossip takes on a life of its own. In a place where everyone “knows” everyone, truth feels almost irrelevant, because perception is what really sticks. Morgan captures this brilliantly, showing how half-truths, assumptions, and whispered conversations can shape reputations long before facts ever get a chance.
The atmosphere is where this book really shines. There’s a claustrophobic edge to the tight-knit community, where secrets don’t stay buried, they just get retold differently depending on who’s speaking. The highlight of this is how the same gossip can be used to one’s own advantage!
If anything, the book’s strength is also its frustration, in the best way. Watching characters be judged and defined by rumour alone is both compelling and slightly infuriating, which feels entirely intentional.
A compelling, thought-provoking read that proves the most dangerous thing in a small town isn’t what actually happened… it’s what people believe happened. Add on top how you can manipulate those beliefs and you have a good solid read.

Northern Bite by Todd Morgan

This is a psychological crime mystery short story (66 pages) and my first ever read in this genre. The story centers around a small northern town where a robbery has taken place at the local convenience store. Rumors quickly begin to circulate that the suspect is one of its own young residents. He’s arrested and stands trial….. but which ‘truth’ will be believed?
Mr. Morgan uses solid descriptive imagery, providing the reader with an experience of becoming a member of the town. One can feel the mist in the air and touch the peeling paint on the basement apartment. The storyline is intriguing and not just gained, but held my attention throughout. The author doesn’t rush the timeline. It unfolds slowly giving the reader time to think about what has happened and what might happen next.
This story creates an opportunity to think about how one person can twist their narrative multiple ways to work in their own favor. Curiosity fuels gossip and rumors become truth, though none are fully accurate. In the end, whose retelling will you believe?

Great short crime story! It was interesting to get the brother’s POV of the crime his brother committed and the subsequent actions. I will say I feel like I may be too immune to the crime that happens today and not sure I feel like armed robbery would get the town’s attention the way this one did. If there had been an actual murder, yes probably so. Definitely felt like the brother of the main character was a sociopath and narcissistic. He carefully planned a crime to try and get away with it. I couldn’t really see any point in what he did expect to just prove that he could do it. And their mother was just in denial. Overall a great read and the author did a great job of putting you in that dread-inducing state!

This 66 page short story packs a punch. I read this after the author reached out to me on TikTok and I’m glad he did! It is difficult to pull the reader in when the narrative is so short but Todd Morgan had no such issues. I was so intrigued to find out what was going to happen. I really felt sorry for Kevin and this book shows the small town mentality, how rumours can spread and that the truth doesn’t matter. After a local store is robbed, the town has conflicting accounts of what occurred and Kevin has to navigate the quiet whispers, stares and judgement. If you want a quick impactful thriller you need to read this!

Northern Bite by Todd Morgan is a quietly unsettling story about how quickly truth can twist in a small town. When suspicion, gossip and assumptions take over, shaping reputations before facts can surface.
The atmosphere is the highlight, with a claustrophobic sense of a tight-knit community where stories change depending on who’s telling them. It’s both compelling and slightly frustrating—in a good way—as characters are judged based on rumor alone.
Overall, this was a strong 4-star read. Thought-provoking and engaging, it shows that sometimes what people believe matters more than what actually happened.

Northern Bite is a masterfully written crime mystery that centers on a high-stakes game of influence. Instead of a typical "whodunnit," the story explores the psychological fallout of a crime and the clever ways a person can navigate the system by controlling the information others receive. I was gripped by the atmospheric tension and the way the author challenges the reader to find the truth hidden beneath layers of conflicting perspectives. It’s a sophisticated, intellectual thriller that stays with you long after you finish it—I highly recommend picking this up immediately.

????

So this book felt personal to another level. I think everyone in their families has that one person or maybe that has traveled a wrong path and just "knows" how to make things different or change someone's perspective enough to rise doubt. This was a quick read and I couldn't help but get upset because as I said this hit personal with my own family that this scenario happened. Not robbery but wrong action and made sure to try to change stories and keeps doing it ... what did I do? Leave ...

I read this book after the author reached out on Tiktok and asked if I'd be willing to read one of his books and provide a review. I was pleasantly surprised. This was a short read, but it managed to draw the reader in. The author is very descriptive and his writing flows well. I found the story intriguing especially coming from a small town myself. I was kind of waiting for a bigger moment to happen and that never really came. With that being said, it was a great short read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for such a read.

“Northern Bite” by Todd Morgan is a tense, slow-burn literary crime story set in a small town where rumors spread faster than facts. When Kevin returns home and his brother becomes the center of a robbery investigation, he’s pulled into a web of conflicting stories, family loyalty, and quiet judgment. The atmosphere is heavy, the characters feel real, and the shifting truths keep you questioning everything. Perfect for readers who love emotional, character-driven suspense with a haunting small-town vibe.

I just finished Northern Bite, and what stood out to me most was the atmosphere. While I was reading, the story honestly felt like an indie film playing in my head ...dark skies, a quiet small town, and this constant feeling that something isn’t quite right beneath the surface.
The story follows Kevin and his younger brother Liam after a robbery at a local convenience store, and the tension really builds around the different stories Liam tells everyone.
The writing was very descriptive, which made the scenes easy to picture.

Couldn't put it down!

This was such a quick and engaging read. I love the descriptive way that Todd Morgan writes. He really has a gift for painting a picture with his words. At times, I could almost smell the scene he was describing, feel the mist on my skin. This town felt like it could have been the small town I grew up in. I really enjoyed this book. This was my first experience with Todd Morgan's work and it definitely won't be my last.

Northern Bite grabbed my attention immediately! Todd is a master at painting a scene; the sound of the cars, the smell of the mist or snow in the air, the murmur of voices as they cast their judgements.
A story of manipulation born out of small town boredom, or the need to be seen, the power struggle of right and wrong, a family slowly unraveling by their own surroundings.
I could not put this book down! A quick but fun,-keep you on the edge of your seat-read!

This short read packs a massive punch, perfectly capturing the suffocating "rumor mill" of a sleepy town where gossip travels faster than the truth. It’s a slow-burn crime story that explores the heavy layers of guilt and the complex realization that you can’t always save the people you love. Vivid and cinematic, it’s a gritty reminder that sometimes, the only person you can truly save is yourself.

This psychological thriller short story ( 66 pages ) really intrigued me. The way the story was written just pulled me in , the amount of detail about the small town Kevin moved back to was just perfect .

This short story really does show the nature of how small towns work, and the amount of pressure it can leave .

Definitely recommend if you’re a fan of this genre or you just want to have a change without commitment .

Thank you for reaching out Todd ! Can’t wait to read more from you.

Wow!! The authors use of description in this was incredible! This follows the male main character Kevin whose brother commits a crime. Considering the book was only 66 pages it definitely pulled me in. If I was going to critique it would be to make the story longer and maybe add in some plot twists to really grip and shock the reader. But other than that I really enjoyed and would definitely recommend for a quick read!

Rough childhood. Small town. Then a robbery happens upon Kevin’s return. Everyone is shaken about it. We have one suspect, but too many narratives, too many versions. So many whispers and rumors. Small town gossip. What happens when they apprehend the suspect? Which events are true and which ones are false? “No one wins when the truth dies.”

I pick books by the title and cover art and I really thought this was going to be a great story based on those 2 things.

Unfortunately, this story fell extremely flat for me. It is a quick read, and I kept waiting for the mystery and psychological aspect of the story to kick in and for me it never did.

I’d rate this book a 3 out of 5. The story was interesting and it was a quick, enjoyable read, but I was hoping for more suspense throughout. It just didn’t keep me on the edge of my seat as much as I expected.

What a great short story - it had me hooked from the beginning.

Written from the brothers point of view about what is happening around his family - how attitudes change, the truth of the events get twisted and changed, feelings towards family members change and your role within the family.

This psychological mystery is the perfect length - not all books need to be 250+ pages to make a point and leave a mark

This was a great read. Great characters that are easy to follow. Short stories typically leave you with too many questions but this book had a great start, middle and finish. The characters were developed just enough to understand each individually and how they fit together. Amazing read!!!!

This is a short psychological thriller where you see the brother's point of view to the crimes his brother committed. You see the layers of guilt, emotions and complexity of not being able to save someone. Sometimes you can only save yourself. It is gritty and real with characters you can identify with.

Northern Bite pulled me in with its eerie atmosphere and steady tension.

What really stood out to me was how the story played with truth and perception—watching everything unravel and seeing how easily things can get twisted was honestly frustrating in the best way. There were moments that had me shocked and a little mad, especially toward the end.

This was a solid 4⭐ read for me. If you like psychological crime mysteries that mess with your head and leave you thinking about it after, this one is worth picking up.”
