He owns the gym where champions are made. She's the investigative journalist who destroyed his career fifteen years ago. Now she's back in Dark River to investigate his latest fighter, and the hatred between them burns almost as hot as the chemistry they can't ignore.

Brooke Bennett left Dark River years ago and never looked back. She's built a reputation in New York as one of the best sports journalists in the business, but when her editor sends her back to investigate Dominic's rising MMA star, she's forced to face the man she never got over.

Dominic Midnight has spent the last fifteen years rebuilding after Brooke's exposé destroyed his dreams of breaking into the big leagues. Now he's finally got another shot. But Brooke is back, and Dominic is certain she's come to finish what she started—destroying his career for good.

What started as an explosive hookup in high school became a feud that's lasted decades.

But proximity breeds something more dangerous than anger. The chemistry that ignited them at seventeen is still there, hotter and more volatile than ever. As Brooke's investigation reveals truths neither of them expected, they're forced to confront what really happened all those years ago, and whether two people who've spent their lives fighting can finally let their guard down.

Until Sparks Fly is the fourth installment in The Midnight Men series, perfect for readers who love enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance, and the kind of chemistry that's worth fighting for.

Wow—this series just keeps getting better. Until the Sparks Fly finally gives us the long-awaited backstory of the eldest and most mysterious Midnight brother, Dominic. As the owner of a gym in Dark River, he’s been at odds with Brooke Bennett since high school, and their unresolved tension has been simmering for years.

We’ve seen glimpses of Dominic and Brooke in earlier books, but here their history really comes into focus. Their conflict stretches back to when they were teenagers, followed by another major fallout when Brooke, now a professional sports journalist, published an article that ultimately ended Dominic’s career as a MMA coach. One thing that did throw me off a bit was the timeline—I found myself flipping back to figure out their current ages. One pet mentions they are in their 40s, which I actually loved, but I wish that detail had been made a little clearer as they mention being at odds for 15 years multiple times.

One of my favorite aspects of this author’s writing is the attention to detail. The worlds he creates feel immersive and authentic, especially when it comes to his characters’ professions. This time, I really enjoyed the deep dive into boxing/MMA. Across the series, he’s explored everything from running a high-end restaurant to Formula One racing to life as an author and bar owner, and his knowledge always feels impressively real.

In this installment, we also learn that Dominic and Brooke had a secret relationship in high school—and the chemistry between them hasn’t faded one bit. When Brooke is assigned to cover Dominic’s comeback as a coach for a promising young boxer, they’re forced back into close proximity. The tension? Still very much alive. Brooke, in particular, was easy to root for—she’s smart, fair, driven, and clearly passionate about her work. As a native Philadelphian, I loved the underdog boxing/MMA story line and was routing for Dominic and his protege the entire time.

What stood out most to me was how they finally confronted their past. Watching them open up, take accountability, and realize how deeply they had misunderstood each other was incredibly satisfying. And if you enjoy a steamy romance, this one definitely delivers—this is very much open-door, and their chemistry and sexy times go well beyond just “sparks.” More like an inferno!

That said, I have to mention the third-act breakup (which, at this point, feels like a series staple). It was frustrating to see them fall apart and decide to go NO CONTACT after everything they’d been through—especially after they’d already declared their love. But Dominic comes through with a grand gesture, the payoff is worth it, and their happily ever after feels earned.

In the end, I loved how they chose each other and found a way to make it work. This author consistently shows that love is messy and complicated—but absolutely worth fighting for. I also really love how the brothers and their spouses were an important part of the storyline too and how they supported Dominic and Brooke.

Bring on Chef Alex next!

I’m glad that worked the way it did!

This was my favorite of the whole series! I’ve loved all the brothers’ stories, but this one just felt good. It was exiting to see the layers peeled away to reveal the outcome. I was cheering for them the entire time!
Also, I enjoyed the fact that all the women in this series have had their own power, matched equally to the men. Oftentimes, in romance, it seems there’s a damsel in distress rescued by a big, strong, successful man. While that is commonplace and I still read it, it felt great to read about women who had their own hopes and dreams and made them work with their partner.
Nice work, Mr. Wilder!

I was disappointed in this book. At the start of the series, Dominick is portrayed as the villain - the one who practically sells the family home to a developer without communicating with everyone involved. I think I was looking forward to a character with a darker side having a redemption story, but it's like all of that was forgotten and he suddenly became a victim. They're both holding onto some silly thing about a scholarship in high school when they're supposed to be 25 years older now and seem relatively successful? It's hard to feel anything for either of them except that they're pathetic and whining too much. The book might have worked better if it had started when they were in high school and the reader had gone through all of it with them. I generally like books with a good story and although Dominick had more of one, it wasn't what it could have been.

I suppose it was bound to happen. This is a Nate Wilder book I loathe.

Dominic is the eldest Midnight brother and runs a very successful gym in Dark River. Enter Brooke, the one we could call a heroine but for me that’s not what she was. She’s a total Bitch with a capital B. She and Dominic went to high school together. They had hot sex with each other, lots of it. They didn’t have any kind of relationship with each other apart from that, until they became rivals for the same scholarship offer. Then they were viscous with each other. Brooke was going through to be a sports reporter and I don’t know what Dominic had planned. I didn’t care. I didn’t really care for him based on the first book. Their relationship culminated when Brooke wrote a hit piece, a very sloppily researched hit piece, on him as revenge for Dominic winning the scholarship. At the time of the article, Dominic was training a young fighter to be a MMA fighter. The fighter was accused of using illegal drugs and Dominic knew about it. He didn’t know but the article ruined his chances of training fighters and Brooke went on her way to become a sports journalist, living the high life in NYC, with nary a thought about what sex did to her former high school sex partner. This all happened in the past and now we are in the present.

Dominic has found and is training another young fighter with a great future. Brooke comes back to town to write a story about said young fighter and surprisingly enough, Dominic allows it. Their hate and loathing for each other is still strong but so is their attraction to each other so they get down to some dirty hate sex. Nothing says romance more than pages and pages is somewhat nasty sex. I’m not even going to bother getting into more of the story. For me, it was bad.

I hated Brooke. I would NEVER want to go for a cup of coffee with her. I don’t like books where fighting or boxing is the theme. Although I’ve read some and even enjoyed them, an occupation where your main goal is to be the other person into unconsciousness is the point escapes me. There was very little of what I found so enjoyable and that is the other brothers. They are rarely mentioned. Dominic was an OK hero I suppose - note my enthusiasm for him. The whole book was a complete bomb and everything I loved so much about the first three books is missing.

I’m aware that when reading, we readers bring our own likes and dislikes into the reading and what one readers keeper is another readers “throw it across the room” book so as you read this review, keep this in mind. The next person to read this book may have a completely different reaction and that’s more than fine with me. And one bomb against the three I love isn’t going to deter me in reading more Nat Wilder books. There are at least 2 more in this series I’m looking forward to.

Brooke and Dominic have been competitive enemies since high school when they were vying for the same scholarship. They sabotaged each other so, neither one. Fast forward 15 years and Brooke, a sports journay writes an expose about a boxer he is training. The article insinuates Dominic knew about the boxers PED use and the career of Dominic and the boxer ended. Fast forward another 10 years and Brooke returns to write an article about the first boxer Dominic has agreed to coach. They continue to be hostile to each other and things are heated and revengeful.
What happens to their hate-love relationship on the way to the fight in Mexico City? Will they walk away from each other? How will they resolve their issues?
A true enemy to lovers saga!

Ok I loved this Midnight Man story

I love that you get both perspectives, and this one was so good. It was addictive seeing these two combust together and to see Dom outside his normal stoic behavior, which now makes sense. The fights were epic and I could just visualize it all unfolding.

Favorite of the series so far

I’ve become a fan of Nate Wilder recently and have enjoyed his work. This one is my favorite so far. The tension and chemistry between Brooke and Dominic is amazing. Never read a book with hate sex before but was surprised how into it I became. No favorites between the two characters but enjoyed the struggle they were experiencing

unexpected

This story about boxing is an area i knew nothing about. Matched with journalism which i knew a little.
Combined these themes with a delayed HEA was unexpected but captivating!
Thoroughly enjoyed it.

wow!

I loved this story. I laughed out loud when Brooke held her own and beat Dominique at the fund raiser. Then I cried so much when they both finally came together. Wow what a wonderful story

Audiobook review-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This series keeps getting better and somehow every book is my new favourite despite me loving the previous book. Just love Nate’s writing style, storylines and characters. The narration is yet again spot on for the characters.

Can’t wait for the next audiobook to arrive
