This isnt the sort of book id normally read, but quickly ended up loving.
Evelyn is widowed, and life is carrying on around her, so she decides, on an impulse, so move to Northumberland. She'd seen the area in a book as a child, that was the only reason.
Evelyn remained impetuous and impulsive throughout this book. Making decisions on a whim and hoping they'd work out.
This was a lovely story, where Evelyn befriends Jane, a shy, closeted woman who is diagnosed with cancer. They form a lovely relationship and you see their friendship develop. One of the worst characters, spoiled and selfish Henrietta, Jane's daughter, even has her own awakening and undergoes something of a journey.
I loved the tiny village, the relationship with Zak, showing teenage boys aren't necessarily bad. They just need opportunity. The same for young mums.
There is a focus on the church being the centre of a community, and the need for a focal point where everyone can come together. It also shows that older women are still worth something and not invisible, to men or the community.
I guess this would be classed as womens fiction but its such a lovely read. I was completely taken in by Evelyn and the rest of the small village and read to the end quickly.
