The Omega Clause

Rate this book
An omegaverse holiday romantic comedy.

On my wedding day, I didn’t say I do... I ran.

My pack was cheating, their awful sister was hunting me down before I caused a scene, and the only way out was wearing a stolen Santa suit and disappearing into the night.

Smooth, right?

When I’m almost caught, I dive into the venue’s bar and straight into the lap of the first single alpha I see.

Oh, and the alpha I kiss to save myself?

Yeah. That’s my boss.

And he kisses me back.

In a twist I never saw coming, he tells his mother I’m his fiancée. One tiny lie later and suddenly, I’m spending Christmas with my boss… and his family.

Which would be fine, except his brother and their best friend turn out to be my scent-matches, too.

Now I’m tangled in holiday traditions, unexpected bonding, and the kind of pack I never believed I deserved.

Not horrible, I just got bored. I DNFd at 98%, right in the middle of the epilogue, because I just didn't care. I held out hoping the conclusion with the guys' fathers would be better than it was. All that happened was pretty much "yeah we basically abandoned you boys and our omega for 30+ years to live in the city (no notes on if we were faithful) but we're here now and she can travel with us since we're leaving you the house, plus she still wants us, so...."

The dialogue kept forgetting who was speaking (characters answering themselves), or whose chapter it was (saying "I" when it wasn't their chapter). And I swear some of the things and events they mentioned twice didn't align the second time, but I didn't care to go back and check them.

It was cute seeing them create their pack though. Mad respect to the alphas for knowing immediately that they didn't want the kind of relationship their parents had, and taking steps to prevent that.

The story kept trying to sell us on the fact that their abandoned omega mother was happy and actually preferred that lifestyle. Her alphas hardly came home for a few DAYS a year, in favor of living in the city to manage their company, left her to have her heats alone, missed holidays, left their alpha sons to be raised their whole lives by her alone and sporadic nannies, and hadn't seen one of their sons in 10 years by the time the story starts. That's pretty unforgivable, even for side characters, and it's all just swept under the rug by saying the mom finally had a stern talking to them? No.

I also got bored with the story of the MCs because honestly they were boring lol. I've read better from this author. This one just wasn't for me.

The story was a perfect holiday read, but suddenly have a mid-30's Beta turn Omega just threw the entire plot for me. Noteworthy its a AAOO story with 1 Alpha feeling half left put bc he's not attracted to the male Omega. I just didnt vibe with this change in dynamic.

I guess I just wasn't in the mood for a double omega pack and I wasn't expecting it to happen. Especially after Aspen was treated like shit and cheated on. Why did North have to become an Omega? The alpha Jack was basically only with North romantically throughout the entire book, even during what we saw of Aspen's heat. He didn't fuck her til 95% after we saw him with North 5? times including twice during Aspen's heat. Jack and Aspen didn't have any chemistry and I didn't buy that he was even all that into her. Felt more like a book about North, his designation change, and his pack.

I think this was just generally lacking substance. Like, everything felt contrived or glossed over or something. “The Omega Clause” about the estate was just like… huh? Really?

The story got boring. There’s also a lot of unexplained drama that seems frivolous without any backstory.

It started off really intriguing. And then just…fell flat. I’m also tired of the “male beta turns out to be late blooming male omega” trope, it’s way overdone at this point. I feel like Cole got shafted with relationship development because of said male omega who got more air time.

I also feel confused why the cheating pack even wanted to be with the FMC? There was no explanation as to why they’d hunt her down to try and get her back. Without a reason it makes me think “why aren’t they just with the omega they’re fucking on the side?” There also wasn’t enough of them in the book for me to feel any angst or worry about the FMC. It was like the author forgot about them until literally the last 5% of the book and went “whoops forgot to tie that loose end”.

Then there’s the weird ass drama with the MMCs fathers. Like why were they gone so much? Their first “explanation” as to why was “because of the omega clause” which literally didn’t make sense as an explanation to their disappearance. That was absolutely thrown in just to make the book title make sense. But it really wasn’t a major plot point so…it was unnecessary. The fathers being MIA was unnecessary. There was no reason provided.

A very underwhelming book.

Now, no shade but I didn't start reading this thinking it was going to be a literary masterpiece. I wanted a simple read with some humor and sexy stuff. Yeah know wanted to dissociate from my real life while reading about Omegas falling in love. And it started off that way, but quickly just devolved into me wanting to skip section and felt out of the story.

I think it started when we started to hint North was an omega, then all the relationship dynamics that followed. Now let me be clear I genuinely do not care if a book has MM, I get annoyed with this "secret super hidden omega" trope everyone seems obsessed with. I also think North becoming an Omega ruined parts of this story that I was looking forward to in order to enjoy the read. The story becomes about his dynamic and his relationship which yeah they are pack I just don't care as much.

I also think that her being not really an omega role because of caring for North and his stuff just didn't give the oomph these books usually have.

I also found the plot twists and complications to fall flat. Why did her pack come threaten her? They don't actually care, and it doesn't make a ton of sense aside from causing drama.

That goes for the dads too. Why do we have so much drama about these guys?

but anyway. funny parts, but fell flat in almost every other aspect for me. Even for this genre

Abandoned at 40%, sorry. I think my biggest complaint is that really tough trauma that’s lasted years is solved with one conversation with our plucky omega. Ok, yes, it’s lovely that she’s insightful, but after the third time this happened it sucked all of the tension out of the story. Plus the s.x scenes are just meh.

I had high hopes for this book

H: Alphas: Cole & Jack, Beta- North
h: Omega: Aspen
Aspen ran away after finding out her alphas were cheating on her. In the midst of all this she ran into Cole at the bar and in an attempt to not be seen she kissed Cole, who was happy to do so. Fast forward to the next day and they were on their way to his hometown to spend Christmas together. There they found out they are all "scent-match". I like the story so far till we get to this point where the other 2 characters come into play. North is in love with Jack and never told him. I immediately feel this is going to be a conflict of interest since Omega is supposed to be the center of their world but being that North is a beta and in love with Jack I don't think that's going to happen. I lost interest after that. Pg 81 (25%)

Elite antagonist resolution but the rest is a bit slapdash

Approximately the first and last quarters of this book are excellent but the middle half is lacking.

We meet Aspen and get a little taste of her world, small insular and demeaning as it is. The first meet-cute with Cole works well and is pretty perfect for their portion of the relationship to come. This initial world building is pretty vital, gives us hints of what is and is not allowed or common in this book world, and gives us the vital foundation of Aspen and Cole's relationship building. It works very well.

Then we meet North and Jack and things go downhill. From his first words to his last, Jack bugs me. He is a terrible character especially for an MMC position. Self-centered, self-important and disrespectful most of the time, he continually refers to North and Aspen only by their genders, never by name, and is only cheerful or joking when he's trying to manipulate the situation. North is ok but dishearteningly weak. I usually say this about the FMCs but it applies here just as strongly - your main character (even in a poly setting) should never be a weak doormat. Or they at least should find themselves and stop being a doormat. Unfortunately North just feels as strong as tissue paper the entire way through.

The base storyline is decent and the antagonist resolution works well. I've never fallen in love with a side character in a single line but Sheriff Scott had me with little more than a menacing twinkle in his eye.

The worst thing about this book is the absurdly forced storyline regarding Cole and Jack's fathers. Specifically the title "problem" - the omega clause - is a complete non-issue. It does not work for the scenario the author created and has no effect on the plot at all.

The author has some problems with fiddly details and her own timeline. Little ridiculous things like Aspen waxing poetic because "they've shown me every single day that I deserve more" when it's her second day in the house. Even I can keep my house clean and tidy for 2 days. That isn't some endurance feat. Later their mother exclaims about "having all my boys home at last" when there was only one boy that wasn't home. It was a bunch of weird little things that just didn't match up and added up to bugging me.

That said, it's not a bad book. It's not the best but it is an ok read.

i've seen a couple reviews that all list the things i like about this book as their problems and the things i dislike as their positives, which is interesting and strange.

i think the strongest part of this book is the middle section, with north's reveal and the drive for all four of them to become a pack in order to please both of their omegas. people said they felt bad for cole because he's in a pack with people he's not romantically involved with, but like...even if all three of the mmcs were alphas and were not romantically linked, that would still be true. he would still only have a romantic connection with our female omega, so i don't really understand what the problem is.

i think the beginning of this book is actually where it's weakest. i don't care at all about her old pack and her wedding that no one seems to want. it's just a framing device that honestly makes aspen seem like a weak and feckless character. especially because it makes the rest of the narrative less believable. i almost dnf'ed the book in the beginning when aspen sleeps with cole after knowing him for what seems to be 3 days and spending what seems to be less than 12 whole hours in his company.

and then later in the book her old pack comes back to get her for...no particular reason? there's no explanation about why this pack who doesn't like her would want her back so badly?? they cheated on her, they're actively interested in someone else, aspen isn't a character with money or anything specific that would lead them to specifically want to lead her on and manipulate her into being with them. it doesn't seem like they have any actual reason to want to marry her in the first place, so it doesn't make sense that they want to track her down for any particular reason. it feels like manufactured drama, similar to the whole deal with cole and jack's dads. they're a huge source of anxiety and contention for these characters for ??? no reason?? they've left their omega home all the time to raise their children...but they love her and they love their family and they didn't mean to? i just don't really understand the outside sources of conflict and tension because they're so disconnected from any sort of logic.

the part where they're all learning how to be a pack and how to support and care for each other is really nice and sweet, but the actual plot of this book is lacking in support and structure.

A Runaway Bride Finds Her True Match’s

I just adore Jarica James, her books completely captivate me every single time.

Aspen is on the brink of getting married when, just before the “I do’s,” she overhears her pack being unfaithful. Devastated, she flees her own wedding and ends up at a Christmas soirée… wearing a Santa suit. Aspen is an omega who doesn’t mince words and always says exactly what she means, which made her such a refreshing and enjoyable character. At the party, she literally runs into a man named Cole, who turns out to be her boss and, suddenly, her fake fiancé.

Cole and Aspen head to Pine Ridge, where Cole grew up, to spend Christmas with his family. What starts as a pretend engagement quickly turns real when they discover they’re scent matches. And not just with Cole, Aspen also matches with Jack and North.

Cole is the classic workaholic alpha who left home years ago and never looked back, carrying the weight of being the older brother to Jack. Jack is the fun-loving alpha who struggles with jealousy at first but eventually finds his balance. And then there’s North, the former beta turned omega, who is caring, gentle, and incredibly sweet. I loved him so much. Jack and North dance around their connection and attraction until Aspen comes into their lives.

This story had everything I wanted in an omegaverse romance, including things I didn’t even realize I needed. As for Karina, my heart ached for her. I don’t think I could ever live that far apart from my loved ones, she is such a unique character, and I just wanted to give her the biggest hug.

This was the perfect blend of Christmas magic, found family, and omegaverse romance, and I adored every moment of it.

⭐️ 3.5/5 rounded up
🌶️ 2.5/5

Some SPOILERS ahead.

The story was a cute, cozy read to indulge in before Christmas. I loved Cole fiercely, he was such a good Alpha.🥹🫶🏼

Now the reasons for the rating:
- Lots of spelling, grammar, and dialogue errors. Which is not a common thing with Jarica’s books so I was surprised to see them. There was a moment where Cole and Jack were talking and their dialogue was so mixed up I had to read it a few times to understand what was going on: while it said one said something it was actually the other speaking. Noel and then Noelle on a page apart. There’s more but I didn’t take note of them.
- Jack and Aspen literally had sex once at the very end of the book. Jack always had sex with North while North attended to Aspen. But Jack never penetrated Aspen during those times. Did I miss them together earlier than 95% somehow? I don’t think I did. 🤷🏻‍♀️
- To piggyback off of that, this seemed more like Jack was with only North, North was with Jack + Aspen, and Cole was only with Aspen. Sure Jack took care of her and kissed her and touched her, but nothing really more than that until the book was basically ending. This “pack” lacked a lot imo. Jack didn’t even claim her until the end and I just feel like their relationship was completely on the back burner and overshadowed. What’s the point in having them together?

This was a quick read and I love Jarica’s work, this one just wasn’t my absolute favorite. I did enjoy it though. 😊 The epilogue was my favorite from the entire book. 🥰

This was a cute little holiday story. The characters were fun, the plot as expected.

There were only two things that stuck out at me as odd or didn't make sense:

(1) How did the exs find her? Did her new alpha spell out where she was when he told them to stay away from her? Did they track her phone? Are they secretly skilled spies who can hunt people down but don't know when they are being spied upon? I don't get it. It makes no sense. Nothing supports this other than the fact that it is a common theme in these types of stories so "of course it is in this one too."

(2) The whole parent thing at the end. What?

Well. It had potential but it didn’t really hit the way it should have.
Author could benefit from a more thorough editing. Not just typos, but contradictory sentences literally one right after another, and spice scenes that could use a rewrite (especially Jack, North and Aspens first time together) due to inconsistency with what was currently happening.

The resolution between the guys and their dads was anticlimactic. The complete designation switch for North came out of left field. The interaction between Aspen and her first pack towards the end of the book was random AF. All the sudden, ppl are beating the crap out of each other and no one other than the pack/dads step in? The cops blatantly ignoring what’s going on? Not buying it. Plus, how did they even find her in a small town over an hour away. A random restraining order that isn’t mentioned until the end of the book?
The mom immediately knowing they weren’t together but just pretending she bought it?
Also, Cole biting North because North asked was totally fine, and not making it sexual made sense. However it was written so abruptly. Bite him, lick it, and then go back to his own omega. It was impersonal for ppl who had known each other since childhood.

It seemed like the author had a nice idea for a book but then threw in so much random crap that she had to figure it out last minute and it was rushed. I didn’t feel any connection to the chars really. I think a re-editing with removal of some of the more random stuff and fixing of errors would benefit it greatly.

I had to skim a lot to be able to get through this book. The main character is being cheated on by her Alphas and leaves on her wedding day but it’s never really explained why they even wanted to marry her and not the OW or why the Alphas sister seemed to want it to happen while also wanting them to be with the OW.

I think my biggest issue with this book was the beta becoming an omega. It made the pack feel really unbalanced. He was only mated to one of the Alphas(Jack) and the other Alpha(Cole) felt really left out of things. He literally waited outside the nest at one point for the other 3 to be done being together during a heat. And a night he and Jack had a lot of emotional stuff he was left out of getting support because the 3 of them were already together.

The other issue I had with the beta turned omega(North) was that he and Jack had been in unspoken love for something like 10 plus years and it seemed like they had a relationship and also kinda Jack had a relationship with Aspen as an after thought. He was clearly way more interested in North to the point he was barely with Aspen one on one during her heat. The relationship dynamics just didn’t work.

A whole subplot with the guys parents was pointless since it was resolved with no pay off and not realistic. From a technical standpoint things were off as well. Mistakes on which person was actually talking, things changing from 2 years ago to 3 in the same paragraph etc.

The book's dialog started off stilted an awkward, but it improved as the book went on. The main characters and their relationship developments were decent, but the secondary characters and their behavior made no sense whatsoever.

There were many plot choices that were clumsily done, heavy handed or entirely too much. Simplifying the story would have made for a more enjoyable read. As written, it felt like the author had a grab bag of omegaverse tropes, rolled the dice to see how many she would use, then blindly grabbed from the bag.

I hope her next book is more focused.

They might be the most boring MC's I've ever read. I guess it could be classed as a cute read but for me the middle was just dull, it started out well, went boring and then was anticlimactic. I was hanging on to see the fallout with the old pack and the MMC's fathers. I shouldn't have bothered as apparently one conversation fixes all with the dad's. The old pack, it's not even explained why they came to try and get her back other than "she's ours".... what about the sisters best friend, they didn't seem bothered by the FMC at the beginning so why now?

Also not every male beta needs to late transition into an omega! I felt like it made the pack disjointed. Why do authors all write them as dormant omegas now. It makes it seem like betas aren't important by them making them transition but I actually think this would have worked so much better had he stayed a beta. I love a beta scent matching an omega and I think this omega would have been just as obsessed with her beta as she was her alphas.

Aspen is just about to be married when she finds out that the men she’s about to marry are sleeping with their sister’s best friend. So, what does Aspen do? She runs, puts on a Santa suit, sits on a stranger's lap and kisses him to hide from her bridesmaids.

Only, it backfires. The stranger introduces Aspen as his fiancé to his mom, and she ends up going to his hometown with him. Where she finds out that not only is he her scent match, but also his brother and best friend’s.

I enjoyed Aspen’s relationship with Cole, Jack and North separately, but also as a group. All three guys bring something different to their relationship and I loved that. I loved that Aspen finally had a parent in Karina, Cole and Jack’s mom, that she never had in her own.

This is such a perfect holiday omegaverse! I couldn’t put it down! There’s a lot of fun Christmas and winter activities that the characters do. There’s a little bit of drama with Aspen’s ex’s, and Cole and Jack’s dads. I enjoyed the banter between the characters and the spice was absolute perfection!

not what I was expecting

SPOILERS AHEAD

So I LOVE Cole and Aspen and I honestly could’ve read a book with just them as the couple. I loved North and Jack and could’ve done the same for them. However the 4 of them as a pack just didn’t work out. I reads lots of OV but I am not a big fan of surprise omegas in the pack so when I went into this book thinking it was an ABOA but instead turns out it is an AOOA, needless to say it felt unnecessary. North could’ve stayed a Beta and his relationship with Jack would’ve still had value. It felt like making North into an Omega all of a sudden gave “justification” for his relationship with Jack and then North going into heat and that whole situation kind of refocused everything. Even during bond stuff it was Cole/Aspen and Jack/North. I’ve read lots of Male Omega and double Omegas in a pack books and I’ve loved them…however they made SENSE. This made no sense and honestly made the relationships less interesting and cohesive.

“The Omega Clause” fits perfectly with this author’s usual omegaverse writing style. It’s cute, lighthearted, quite low on drama (especially once you’re through the first quarter of the book) and on the spicier side. I really enjoyed the meet-cute between Cole and Aspen; It was absolutely my favorite part of the entire story. As usual, the relationship building goes quickly, so you have to be okay with a courtship that lasts only a few days before starting an eternity as bonded mates. But if you’re used to the concept of scent matches this shouldn’t be a surprise anymore.

Overall, this is the kind of book I like to read around the Christmas holidays: not too complicated, with all the Christmas romance and the very predictable but also satisfying ending surrounded by Christmas lights and snow.

Aspen is a runaway bride after catching her grooms cheating minutes before the ceremony starts. When she tries to flee, she falls right into the arms of her alpha boss (unbeknownst to her) and entangles herself in a fake fiancé for the holidays’ agreement. This deal finds the pair heading to Pine Ridge and Cole’s family home to reunite with family, including the men everyone assumed would make up his pack. The surprise happens when Aspen discovers she is scent matched to all three. More surprises await this group though, and it wouldn’t be a family holiday without a little drama. The men need to work out the dynamic and years they’ve been apart as much as they need to work through their new relationship status with Aspen. I loved it for the holiday vibes and bonding between the Karina (Jack and Cole’s mom) and Aspen as well.

*SPOILERS*

I liked this book don’t get me wrong but I have some serious issues with the dynamics of the pack. One of the biggest arguments in the book is that Jack feels like Cole is better than him and they butt heads only for them to finally talk it through and move forward but then you give Jack TWO omegas and only give Cole one? AND Cole is the one who has to move his entire company and leave the life he’s built to appease the entire pack.

It was so frustrating to see the lopsided dynamics there especially when it felt like Jack threw a tantrum about wanting to be equals only for him to end up getting more. In a pack with only two alphas why in the world would you give one of those alphas both omegas and not the other???

This book had me in all my feels!
This author immediately drops you into this heart breaking situation. I’m not sure if I was more sad or angry for what this Omega had endured.
Then I was rooting for this new pack to find their footing.
I enjoyed these characters and how they each had some history together.
It was fun watching them all find their new dynamic as a pack.
And friendships flourish into so much more.
And even despite their scent matching they had this undeniable chemistry,
And lawd have mercy when these alphas worked together to take care of their omegas it will have you fanning yourself and swooning!
I loved this little town and this little found family!
And that epilogue… oh my heart!

This book was absolutely a delightful read during this holiday season. It was beautiful and a wonderful story of an omega who lost something on the day of her wedding. Her pack. And it was a great story of finding love unexpectedly, finding a family, finding a home.

It’s a typical Jarica James read; light-hearted, fun, an amazing and funny read with great characters, spicy scenes and some MM goodness. And centered around my favorite holiday!

I really hope there’s more stories in Pine Ridge.

good quick read

This was a nice winter omegaverse. I really enjoyed the book it just felt rushed at times. I felt like things were missing, such as descriptions of characters. The plot of the story was amazing I loved this omega who was strong and vulnerable at the same time. She accidentally falls into her bosses lap and then it all spirals from there. It was a wild ride from page one or as Cole would say “chaos”. It was funny, sweet, spicy, dramatic, and some tense moments.

This is not the best work but I still enjoyed reading it. It is about a girl on the run from her betrothed pack and runs minutes before the wedding. After she runs she finds her scent matches. Cole is her fake fiancé and helps her on her way. Cole is a workaholic. Now meeting his family he announces the engagement and she meets Jack. He's the younger brother of Cole and is sweet but struggles. Then there is North. Also an omega. I love how it turned out but some characters irked me just a bit. Still a good solid read.

The Omega Clause is a sweet, spicy, contemporary, why choose, omegaverse, holiday romance with an awesome story and characters. I loved the pack dynamics and how each relationship grows. I adored the family aspect of the story as well. It was an all around awesome read.

The writing, flow, pace, plot, characters, storytelling, storyline, character development, and world building were all terrific. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to any fan of omegaverse romance.

This was one that I absolutely loved reading! I love how Aspen and Cole came together, tragic and beautiful. I enjoyed how they all came together and how fast but easy they fit as a pack. I also loved how Aspen doesn’t take no crap and helped her Alphas dads realize their mistakes. North definitely took me by surprise but it was definitely worth it, he’s one of my favs! This was such a cute cozy read that I’ll definitely read it again! 🫶🏻

The Omega Clause is an small town Omegaverse Holiday romance story by Jarica James. If you've read Jarica's Omegaverse stories before than you already know this story is Amazing! Our FMC is set to marry but she has apack not worthy of her (IYRYK LOL) and thus plays a part in her finding her pack. With all of Jarica's stories this one will give you all the feels while you dive deeper into the story. I devoured this story and need more. I'm excited to see what Jarica gives us next.

a great holiday read

I love a Jarica James read!! This book did not disappoint. I was worried towards the end but it didn’t feel rushed. I wish there was more closure with the exes and those crummy omegas. It was odd to only see North’s family that one time when we know they live in town but other than that, it was solid.

I liked the characters. I liked the Hallmark holiday feel. It was great!
