Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe: Misbeliefs that Keep Us From Experiencing God's Grace

Rate this book
Gary Kinnaman contends that many Christians are blinded by what he calls "popular and nonbiblical notions" of God. Applying personal anecdotes, stories from the lives of others, and a large dose of humor, the author challenges ten beliefs that are obstacles to the experience of God's love and providence. With a lighthearted touch, the author rescues readers from stubborn religious lies, such as God grades on a curve; the better you are, the bigger the blessing. And whoppers, such as if God leads you to something, everything will work out just great. Witty and engaging, Kinnaman may offend Christians of all traditions as he provokes them to think more deeply about their faith and their behavior.

I definitely enjoyed this book. It clocks in at just a little over 200 pages (including end notes) so it won't take you long to read. The book will challenge you and it might even make you mad. It will definitely make you think and reconsider some of your beliefs and thoughts/ideas. The author does a very good job of relating his ideas and he says his goal is to make you think and he definitely accomplishes that. I would definitely recommend all Christians reading this and letting it challenge your thinking.

Very insightful and worthy to be read. I didn't like how the author felt that if we didn't feel bothered about the misbelief's that he mentioned; he didn't do his job. After reading the book, I felt more affirmed than disappointed in myself. I did see how some of my friends and family have fallen into these misbeliefs. I think as a writer, it's not about proving someone right or wrong but at least starting a discussion on why you feel or act a certain way and find resources (Bible) to speak truth to it. Overall great read!

Are you a good Christian?

This book is very instrumental in the life of every Christian that follows religion rather than Christ. We have learned to believe what others have taught us since we were children. We need to read the bible from scratch to know what is right or wrong. The Holy Spirit always convicts you, the nudge in the right direction. Read & become hungry for Jesus & discover that He Is enough!
This book is straight forward & teaches how to be a "real" Christian.

I've been a preacher for 65 years now. I learned early on that I could deliver a sermon in 10 minutes
that the people would sit and enjoy, or I could say the same thing in 30 minutes and watch a lot of squirming, at the end of which they might not even remember the first points. Rev Kinnaman might want to think of that in his writing. Never-the-less, I really agreed with the points he was making. I would encourage others to read it.

Addressing beliefs about the nature of God, sin, forgiveness and living a Christian life, Kinnaman uses biblical scripture to backup his assertions and dispel commonly held beliefs. While many of the "misbeliefs" are never actually discussed in the church, they become apparent in the things some Christians say and how they live their lives. Kinnaman backs up his interpretations and explains them well in this book that is highly readable even for someone who has a limited biblical background.

Eye-opening. I made a promise to myself to read this in Jan., after buying it last year. God used this book to answer several questions and mistaken ideas for others and for me. Never doubt God's timing!!! Thank you for a wonderfully written book.

Obviously, smart people do think a lot of dumb things when it comes to the Bible. That’s why we need the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to lead us and teach us the Truth. I found this book to be very informative and at times humorous… It’s well written and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Part of my unread bookshelf series, this book was so patient and waited over 12 years! Nothing sticked out really, but good whatsoever.
